@AlanMunn I started looking here because I was thinking it might be a good idea to poke the langsci folks about this and also be able to CC Kai on GitHub ... but things look really messy, and I'm not even sure what to start with. I have no idea why they're maintaining a fork of the S&P stuff, much less having symlinks to it with their name ... This seems bad.
@AlanMunn And thanks for saying that about the testing. Hopefully it won't take too long. It'd be nice to try to wrap this project up.

When one submits a package to CTAN, not all of the files have to go into the same directory in the TeX Directory Structure, correct?
I want to make sure I have this right before I say something that is wrong. :)

2:24 AM
@AlanMunn I ended up saying something here: github.com/langsci/latex/issues/50
@AlanMunn Feel free to weigh in if you have further thoughts or suggestions for them (or if you think anything I said is wrong :P).

Morning all
@AdamLiter No: CTAN prefer a 'flat' structure unless the package is very complex (for example, expl3 just goes in one directory for the upload)

@PauloCereda A Brazilian duck in Venice! ^^^

9:05 AM
@CarLaTeX I showed the football ducks on the Dante-Meeting this morning in my greeting ...

9:17 AM
@DavidCarlisle Had to check my SVN setup on new laptop ...

@UlrikeFischer Yay!!! :):):)

@CarLaTeX Yay!
@UlrikeFischer Yay
@JosephWright top of the morning, sir!
@DavidCarlisle oh

9:34 AM
@JosephWright I did a check in at work that took over an hour, I wonder if git would have been faster? (oh I just looked it was over 15 thousand files, but still:-)

@DavidCarlisle oh my :)
@DavidCarlisle: IIRC in git there's a way to get just the last commits, I believe SVN has something along those lines?

@PauloCereda I was committing the files not uodating. annoying thing was it was Friday evening and I wanted to go home but i wasn't sure svn would take kindly to having the laptop suspend and wake up at a different ip address mid-commit

@DavidCarlisle Ah. :)

10:39 AM
@PauloCereda Hi
@DavidCarlisle :)

@JosephWright David is mean

@JosephWright I'm toying with the idea of suggesting using etex

@DavidCarlisle :)

1 hour later…
11:55 AM
@JosephWright Interesting. Thanks for the reply. That's good to know! :)

@AdamLiter Alan is mean. :)

@PauloCereda lol. :) You seem to be in disagreement with yourself! :P

@AdamLiter They use out of context sentences to make me contradict myself. :)

@PauloCereda Sounds like politics ... lol. Anyway, how are things going for you? Is your thesis going well? :)

@AdamLiter Slow but steady. :) People prod me about it all the time. :)
@AdamLiter: also, version 4.0 of arara fixed a lot of bugs, including the ones with knitr and spacing. :)

@PauloCereda finished your thesis?
@JosephWright spot the difference...
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{expl3}
\begin{document}

\typeout{^^J[[öé]]^^J}

\makeatletter
\begingroup
\catcode`\~13
\catcode`\"12
\def\UTFviii@loop{%
  \uccode`\~\count@
  \uppercase\expandafter{\UTFviii@tmp}%
  \advance\count@\@ne
  \ifnum\count@<\@tempcnta
  \expandafter\UTFviii@loop
  \fi}
    \count@"C2
    \@tempcnta"E0
    \def\UTFviii@tmp{\protected\xdef~{\noexpand\UTFviii@two@octets\string~}}
\UTFviii@loop
    \count@"E0
    \@tempcnta"F0

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@DavidCarlisle Looks good to me

@JosephWright it basically means that the LICR for a utf8 character is its utf8 string which might be considered too much of a change but it's better I think (and what the original version of that utf8 loop, in xmltex, did:-)

@DavidCarlisle I'm all for it: we have to change some stuff somewhere

@JosephWright I'll try to make a more coherent email later

12:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Cool

12:41 PM
@PauloCereda Good luck with the thesis! I'm sure you'll get it finished. :)
@PauloCereda And yes! I've been following the development of it a bit, and I'm excited for it to be released. :)

@AdamLiter I hope too. :)
@AdamLiter Thanks, we will get there. :)

5:28 PM
Hello, please is there a commande to obtain \begin{equation}...\end{equation} in the center ?

5:39 PM
@Vrouvrou Hm? Displayed math is centered by default.

no i don't get the equation at the center

@Vrouvrou We'll need an example then

@Vrouvrou Of your input!

@Vrouvrou [fleqn] option?

5:42 PM
\documentclass[11pt,oneside,fleqn]{book}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\hypersetup{colorlinks=true, linkcolor=blue, urlcolor=blue}
\hypersetup{citecolor=blue}
\usepackage{caption}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{amsfonts,amsmath,amssymb,amsthm,mathrsfs}
\usepackage{fancyhdr}
\usepackage[Bjornstrup]{fncychap}
\usepackage{yhmath}
\textwidth=16.5truecm \textheight=23truecm
\hoffset=-2cm \voffset=-1.8cm
\newtheorem{theorem}{Theoreme}[chapter]
\newtheorem{lemma}[theorem]{Lemma}

@Vrouvrou see on the first line fleqn = flush left equations

ohh ok
i must delete it
right?

@Vrouvrou Yes.

@Vrouvrou that is all the option does, why did you add it:-)

@DavidCarlisle please can you ameliorate the usepackage ?

5:46 PM
@Vrouvrou \usepackage{t1enc} is a very old markup, why not \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

i have a big space between each part how i can remove it ?
ok i will try it

@Vrouvrou ? for fleqn just delete it and \documentclass[11pt,oneside]{book}

@Vrouvrou Did you actually write this preamble or did you 'inherit' it?

@JosephWright my thought exactly:-)

i don't write it
i found it and i want to ameliorate it
@DavidCarlisle
@JosephWright

5:50 PM
@Vrouvrou It's horrible: start from what you need

i need to write a thesis

@Vrouvrou I would just start from \documentclass{book} then add things that you need, most of those lines come from last century

of mathematics

@Vrouvrou Sure: follow @DavidCarlisle's advice
@DavidCarlisle Yup: at least it's not \documentstyle ;)
@Vrouvrou book class plus amsmath package as a starter

@JosephWright i don't understand

5:54 PM
\documentclass{book}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}

Write your text here!
\begin{equation}
  y = mx + c
\end{equation}

\end{document}
@Vrouvrou ^^^

\documentclass[a4paper]{book}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}

\end{document}

@DavidCarlisle OK, a few more packages ;)

@Vrouvrou oh @JosephWright was doing the same:-) Just start from that and then add packages if you need them

@DavidCarlisle Sounds good to me (though definitely want fontenc and inputenc unless using fontspec)

What about
\textwidth=16.5truecm \textheight=23truecm
\hoffset=-2cm \voffset=-1.8cm

5:58 PM
@Vrouvrou Do Not Do This

i must delete them ?

@Vrouvrou Never ever touch \hoffset and \voffset. You'll soono regret doing it. Use geometry.

@Vrouvrou As @DavidCarlisle and I have said, start from what you need and add stuff

@egreg how geometry ? please

@Vrouvrou \usepackage[a4paper,textwidth=16.5cm,textheight=23cm,heightrounded]{geometry}

6:02 PM
i put a4paper in documentcalss as david told me
the writing is very fine and small how to do ?

@Vrouvrou It will be 10 pt, which is pretty normal for print. If you want it bigger, \documentclass[11pt]{book}

ok thank you
and what about this
\renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{1.5pt}
\rhead{}
\chead{}
\lhead{}
\renewcommand{\footrulewidth}{1.5pt}
\renewcommand{\baselinestretch}{1.5}

@Vrouvrou Do you want running headers? Rules at the top of the page? ... Really, add this stuff if you need it: at the start concentrate on getting your text sorted.

6:18 PM
i found in the and of each chapter a blank page what is the commande to remove this ?

@Vrouvrou The book class starts each chapter on an odd page: if you don't want that, use report

good thank you @JosephWright
please what is the use of \usepackage{caption}?

@Vrouvrou Allows easy customisation of float captions (figures, tables, ...)

ok so i don't need it
and
\usepackage{fancyhdr}
\usepackage[Bjornstrup]{fncychap}

@Vrouvrou fancyhdr is for doing running headers easily
@Vrouvrou I'd avoid fncychap
@Vrouvrou Really, don't start from a list of arbitrary packages, start from what you want/need for appearance, features, etc.

6:34 PM
@Vrouvrou don't start from a list of packages and guess if you need them, just wait until you need some formatting and then the answer may be to add a package.

@DavidCarlisle What I said ;)

@JosephWright I was having a meal:-)

@DavidCarlisle Good plan :)

thank you for your help
@DavidCarlisle
and
@JosephWright
how to obtain a line in the end of each page

7:04 PM
@Vrouvrou easiest is probably to use the fancyhdr package and set \footrulewidth see texdoc fancyhdr

7:42 PM
thank you very much

8:14 PM
@Vrouvrou -- you can learn a lot from this reference: "Using LaTeX to Write a PhD Thesis"

1 hour later…
9:41 PM
Wow, I got an upvote from @DavidCarlisle!

@egreg no you didn't! (I have now, but your comment was earlier:-)

9:54 PM
@DavidCarlisle And a bronze badge. :-P

@egreg yes well i was doing my own answer the unanswered pass so picking up a few old questions:-)
