I have a monocle too.

1 hour later…

@egreg but such a low grade hat

6 hours later…

@JosephWright By "locked the meta thread", I presume you're referring to the FAQ that I flagged on "Why can't we have maths rendering here?". Do you think I should edit it to make it clearer that that isn't the place for discussion, or do you think that your existing comment (together with the fact that it is locked) is sufficient?

7:50 AM
@LoopSpace Locking prevents discussion entirely: I think that should do the job :)

hi
does any one know how i can go to next line and the line doesn't stick to the beginning of the page?
like this :
_______
.. _________
.... __________

@JosephWright Just wondered whether to make it clearer in the text that this was a description of the decision made early on and that it isn't going to change.

@LoopSpace I can unlock if you ant, but to me it seems clear that it's a statement of policy

@JosephWright Fine, let's leave it for now. If loads of "Can we haz maffs plz" questions suddenly appear then we can rephrase it later. Incidentally, I don't see a notification that it is locked and I can still edit the question and answer (though maybe that's because I'm the original author of both).

8:10 AM
how can I use more than one space between the lines?

Q: How to use line breaking without loosing spacing

parvinDoes any one know how I can go to next line saving the spacing? the two back slash doesn't work. Like : xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx Here's an example code: \SkillsEntry{Programming}{C\texttt{++}} \SkillsEntry{}{Web Front End \\ (HTML CSS)} the part (HTML CSS) goes to next line, sticking t...

8:27 AM
@LoopSpace: YAY, YOU ARE HERE

@PauloCereda Hey Paulo, thought I'd check in to be sure that no-one's having duck for Christmas dinner.
2

@LoopSpace ooh that's a relief. :)
Although @DavidCarlisle is quite naughty. :)

@PauloCereda It's alright; he's local so I've gone round and spiked all the ducks in the shops in the vicinity. If he has duck for dinner, he'll regret it.

@LoopSpace ooh I like this plan. :) How are things, pal? We miss you!

@PauloCereda Good, but busy. Just recompiling all my lesson handouts for the past 12 months; bit tedious but needs doing.

8:37 AM
@LoopSpace Oh nice to hear!

@PauloCereda I still use LaTeX for everything. Tried writing an exam in MS Word a year or so ago and vowed never to do it again.
2

@LoopSpace Oh my! It always gives me the shivers when someone sends me a .doc/docx attachment... :)

9:18 AM
@LoopSpace You get a choice?
@LoopSpace All of our exam papers have to be in Word so our support can edit/format and so they can be reviewed ...

@JosephWright boo

9:35 AM
@JosephWright Not really. If I produce something that others use, I have to use a compatible format. So I do my best to avoid that if I can!

@LoopSpace But but … is there any format more compatible than LaTeX?
@LoopSpace He'll probably just go out and shoot one himself.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no
He is mean

@HaraldHanche-Olsen We have slightly stricter laws in the UK. I still remember a Norwegian student trying to get out of doing homework because he was going to hunt moose.
4

@LoopSpace ooh I heard the swans are royal property. I hope ducks are safe too. :)

@LoopSpace :)
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Good luck getting most of your colleagues to edit a LaTeX file, compared to a Word one
@PauloCereda Just swans I'm afraid

9:50 AM
@PauloCereda Ducks are more ... commoner. Probably more Harry and Meghan than Wills and Kate.

@JosephWright oh no

@JosephWright Ah, but @HaraldHanche-Olsen is in an enlightened department in an enlightened university. They even have a department class file for exams.
(Not that it'll be very light right now. 4hrs daylight? @HaraldHanche-Olsen)

@LoopSpace Exams are not departmental, though: they are a university-level thing (so edited, printed, etc. by the exam office)

@LoopSpace it all makes work for the working man to do! :)

@JosephWright That's what I mean by an enlightened university. At Harald's university, exams are set at the department level.

9:53 AM
@LoopSpace Not what I meant: the are owned by the university, and it's the latter which issues degrees and so owns them

@LoopSpace OH MY YES

@JosephWright If I remember right (it has been a few years), the exams office at NTNU just wanted the PDFs.

@LoopSpace To be honest I don't see that part of the process, but I do see our support staff editing the Word files to get them looking right

@LoopSpace … written by myself, in fact …

This is our song sheet for the Christmas mass, done in LaTeX. :)

9:57 AM
@LoopSpace Actually, four and a half hours. If you're willing to call it daylight when the sun is skimming the tree tops on the horizon at noon.
@LoopSpace And of course this was granted. I'd remember the ensuing national scandal otherwise.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Err ... no. I did my stranger in a strange land look and said that I'd accept late submissions if accompanied by sufficient moose meat.

@LoopSpace No, not even the PDFs. They want paper. They don't trust this newfangled digital world.
In some ways, that is wise: One still runs into compatibility problems with PDFs from time to time. It is much rarer now than it was a few years ago, though. There is nothing like having your formulas come out like some sort of hieroglyphs.

Does anyone know a dup or a good reason to close this: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/407162/…?

@TeXnician Tempting to close as "too localized". If we had a "How do I find out which debian/fedora/mint packages contain which tex packages?" then I'd close as a dup of that, but I don't think that question exists. We could always ask it now, though, as that might be a useful question.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Ah, yes. Still, got to be careful with paper. I think moving away from carving the exams in stone was a bad idea. You know it'll last with stone.

10:14 AM
@LoopSpace Seems to be a good idea. We really seem to miss that one.
@LoopSpace Do you want to ask it?

10:35 AM
New Mac Mini set up in the living room at home

@JosephWright 'ooh
@JosephWright Is TL already installed? :)

@PauloCereda Not just yet ;)

@JosephWright Netflix and TeX. :)

@PauloCereda Updating macOS

@JosephWright Last update is long. :(

10:37 AM
@PauloCereda I know: had iMovie of 2.5 Gb, now doing about the same for the OS
@PauloCereda Works nicely

@JosephWright :)

@PauloCereda Restarting now: we don't yet have fibre-to-the-cabinet at home, but the ADSL is pretty good

@JosephWright cool

@PauloCereda We will get VSDL next time the contract gets renewed

@JosephWright Can I steal your signal, please? :)

Q: How do I find out which Linux package contains which (La)TeX package?

Loop SpaceI'm using (La)TeX as installed by my Linux/Unix distribution. I've come across a package that I don't have installed. How do I find out which Linux/Unix package contains that (La)TeX package? Notes: This is a public service question, please take that into account when answering. More than e...

@LoopSpace Great thanks.

@TeXnician Right, now you can answer it and get all the rep!

how can I "cross out" a quote like this? bpaste.net/show/79ac75d060fa . I want a large x to cross it out

11:08 AM
@LoopSpace I tried to got to unix.stackexchange.com because of this question and tried unix.se. Funny side!
@Lembik Using TikZ maybe? Also, you can post code lines like this in the chat as well. No need to use bpaste.net

@LoopSpace Installing Debian 9.3 on a VM just to see what happens with its tlmgr

@MartinScharrer Whoa!

@LoopSpace I will have to wait till I get back to my Linux machines, but if no one does it first I'll provide an answer for Arch.

11:23 AM
I am failing to find a nice solution with Fedora. :(
dnf provides helps, but not all the time.

12:16 PM
@LoopSpace: added a solution for Fedora.

1 hour later…
1:28 PM
@LoopSpace -- the clay tablets that cuneiform was written on have survived remarkably well, especially if they got caught in a house fire. probably a bit easier than carving stone, and certainly easier if you happen to make a mistake in the writing.

2:13 PM
@DavidCarlisle Look now! No pineapple!

A: A Moose, Some Silly Putty ... And A Desperate Plea For Help

Meta's MugRubberducked! I liked the idea behind the "Selfie" hat, however IMO a better theme would have built on the concept of "rubber duck debugging". Self-answered a +2 question with a +2 answer. Made with the help of a 5yo using rounded-tip scissors, construction paper, toilet paper roll remna...

As the resident duck of TeX.sx, I am here on behalf of our duck family to upvote your effort and wish you and your loved ones merry quacky holidays! Cheerio! :)Paulo Cereda 9 secs ago
2

@PauloCereda My suggestion would be to add a little hat to the duck

@samcarter ooh

2:55 PM
@samcarter: I have that duck!

@PauloCereda One answer there made a hat that "is good for stalking ducks". You should complain ;-) meta.stackexchange.com/a/304625/154439

@UlrikeFischer ooh would you like a very silly answer? :)

@PauloCereda I see it as something to look forward to :)

Dear sir, I wish to complain in the strongest possible terms about the hat which you have just posted as answer to this thread. It is clearly a threat to all ducks in existence, as it is being used to stalk poor species of the waterfowl family Anatidae. Many of my friends are ducks who wish to see that justice be done to correct this egregious breach of political correctness towards birds in general. Also, not enough people today wear hats. Yours etc., a wacky duck from the far land of TeX.sx. — Paulo Cereda 27 secs ago

@samcarter @UlrikeFischer ^^

@PauloCereda ;-)

3:25 PM
@MartinScharrer that's a nice idea although I am not sure I would know how to do that

@PauloCereda Code review has an official ducky!

@CarLaTeX ooh

3:40 PM
holla

@Maïeul Aloha!

I am still working on l3build
I try to understand how we can have different test setting for individual checkfile

4:03 PM
@JOs
@JosephWright is it possible?
I have running test which need makeglossaries, some of these need one run, other need three run etc

@Maïeul There are a couple of ways
@Maïeul Easiest would be to just have three runs all-round :)
@Maïeul I recently added the idea of separate sets of configs: at present that's easiest with one per directory but I'll probably generalise further this week

4:25 PM
Did you see that the search box became black? Well almost black.

@egreg yes, looks darker.

4:49 PM
@JosephWright thank (sorry I needed to by bread)

@Maïeul No problem
@Maïeul Depending on family commitments, I should get some work done on this soon

@JosephWright I would like something file by file, but maybe I could do it directory by directory
also a point which is not clear for me is the possibility to use latemkx, at least to produce handbooik
and example file
Typically, me process, actually, witj a makefile is
1. produce the two .sty from .dtx / .ins
2. check file
3. produce handbook for both reledmac and reledpar
4. produce example pdf
5. zip all these things

@Maïeul You can make file-by-file work by using different extensions (one extension for each config): I'll sort you out an example later
@Maïeul Much the same with texlua build.lua ctan
@Maïeul I have to head out soon, so it will probably be later this evening before I can put something together

with l3build I understand 1. and 2.
3. a little bit
4. not at all
5. not clear for me, but seem ok

4:59 PM
@Maïeul That's the doc target (based on typesetfiles)
@Maïeul Items listed in typesetdemofiles
@Maïeul Created automatically when you do the ctan target
@Maïeul Like I say, I'll sort out a demo but need a little while ... have to head out with nephew shortly

@JosephWright of course
I think I will release with my actual system now

@Maïeul Ah, I meant demofiles
@Maïeul Sure: I may have to add some new features to support your use case :)

and I will look to your system for next release
typically, what is the must interessting for me is the check system
but if I migrate, I would like to migrate all things ;-)

@Maïeul Indeed: that's the core around which the rest is set up

@JosephWright maybe you would like I write a "summary" of my need in a file?

5:33 PM
@Maïeul If possible (perhaps by mail)

@JosephWright I will do it

5:57 PM
All of a sudden, I realized the Carlisle/Mittelbach partnership is the TeX equivalent of Lennon/McCartney!
2

6:14 PM
@JosephWright which mail?

@Maïeul joseph.wright@morningstar2.co.uk
@PauloCereda Hmm, Rainer and Chris might not agree

@JosephWright Ringo and George? :)

@JosephWright done thank you

7:10 PM
Hi
I am using a table to visualize a few images in a grid (i.e. the table). But I have 5 images to show and I have two columns. I would like the last image to space both columns, i.e. to be (centered) between the first and second column. Do you know how to do that?

@nbro \multicolumn{2}{c}{\includegraphics{... ?
@PauloCereda that didn't end well :(

@DavidCarlisle Yes, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for this Christmas gift :D

yo'
One my friend asked me what shall she answer to her children wondering why were we so mad about Xmas and Jesus, who he had been and why they had killed him. I advised her to answer them like this: He came into this world to love all the people, so that every single person is being loved. And all the presents are not from Santa Claus or whatever; we give them to each other to remember little Jesus. And he was killed by people who were bothered by all the love. Peace be with you all!
@PauloCereda ^^

7:32 PM
@yo' Nice explanation, dude!

yo'
@nbro thanks. Feel free to get inspired!

8:12 PM
@CarLaTeX To come back to your suggestion about the more rectangular glasses:
What do you think?

8:30 PM
@samcarter Perfect LOL

@CarLaTeX Great! I modified the corner radius a bit and pushed it to github. Have fun with it!
\begin{tikzpicture}
	\duck[squareglasses=blue!50!black]
\end{tikzpicture}

@samcarter Yay!

8:58 PM
@samcarter My avatar is perfect now :)

@UlrikeFischer It is shocking indeed, but I think you and @PauloCereda got it backwards: Clearly, «stalking ducks» are ducks who stalk. I vigorously protest hats that make it easier for ducks to stalk me! Fortunately, though, at my present location the ducks need white hats, not green ones, to get any effective stalking done.

9:16 PM
@CarLaTeX :) and nice combination with the sun hat!

@samcarter :):):)

2 hours later…
11:43 PM
@egreg is carrying a Hawaiian pizza I see!

@DavidCarlisle No pineapple: just tomato and cheese

@egreg nice bit of revtex code:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, the class has several bits of interesting code
%% Original version by David Carlisle

@egreg see my comment under the question, it was right originally:-)

11:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle Excuses…
