Is it possible to insert ~ into text in the Calligra font? When I try I just get a regular looking ~

@IrregularUser \textasciitilde ?

@DavidCarlisle Doesn't seem to match the font though
MWE: \usepackage{calligra}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

\begin{document}
{\calligra Fin\tilde}
\end{document}
Replace \tilde with \textasciitilde sorry

:340393 well ....\T1/calligra/m/n/10 ~ that is it's the ~ in the font so the font designer thought it matched

Oh I see, I thought I had messed up - had tried to find the documentation myself but was unsuccessful

@IrregularUser the package doc is texdoc calligra but not much help here, I added \showoutput to your test file which shows every font of every character

@AlanMunn My answer is a bit long for here and I'd rather post it somewhere it will get corrected if it is wrong ;).
@AlanMunn Also, I apologise if I'm managed to post multiple links to the Forest room. I can never work out which I'm meant to use or what I'm meant to do. I've just discovered I can 'invite' you there because you're here ...
Or because you were here, which is even weirder ...

@cfr Thanks. That's helpful. I don't think you need to invite me, since it's a public chat. (I was able to follow the link without a problem.)

cfr
@AlanMunn I didn't think I needed to. I just wasn't sure I'd posted a usable link and figured it would give you one. (I thought that is what 'invite' did. Aren't all non-moderator rooms public?)

@cfr Yes, I think so.

cfr
@AlanMunn I'm confused by the ? argument processor. It doesn't seem logical :(.

@cfr I haven't even tried to use it. :)
@cfr Generally all my trees are unique in that they are for particular syntactic structures, and so automation is low on my list of things to learn. cf. xkcd.com/1205

@AlanMunn Indeed. But it is a more stimulating form of procrastination than doodling and a cheaper one than going out to get coffee.
@AlanMunn But really, it just appeals to my sense of logic ...

@cfr :) These days I don't even have time for procrastinating.

A: Questions which are bug reports, revisited

Joseph WrightIn general, questions due to bugs should be treated no differently from any others. Thus provided the question is clear and reproducible it should be kept open, and (ideally) answered. For issues which are acknowledged bugs which have been fixed, it may be that the most straight-forward answer i...

Q: Can't compile tex when using localized babel on Ubuntu 16.04

ReverieI installed texlive-full on Ubuntu 16.04 and TeXstudio. All packages work fine except the babel. When I put \usepackage[czech]{babel} the file won't compile. I still can set encoding to UTF8 and properly compile file wit all special characters, however I can't with babel. Simple example: \docum...

@daleif Looks like some odd local files are about: need a 'clean' Ubuntu to test
@daleif I guess I can set up a VM later on (would probably be generally useful)

@JosephWright my thought as well, looks strange with babel files in dot-texmf-var
I'll try a lubuntu 16.04

1 hour later…
1:02 PM
@JosephWright just tested it with a fresh install from Ubuntu (not upstream). As expected it worked just fine. No file generation under the home dir. I'm kinda guessing at one point the user have been using the Ubuntu tlmgr and that messed up things placing in the dome dir.

yo'
1:20 PM
@JosephWright @daleif needs a \listfiles (or a good guess, as you did ;-) )

1:31 PM
@egreg (and @Danu) -- oh ye of too much faith. i can't think of a single such article. it's not in tugboat, although one can search the tugboat archives ("typesetting concrete math" is a candidate) or the tug interview corner for possibilities. if you find it, let me know, and it will be added to the latter list.

@daleif OK, I won't do the same then: was my guess also

2 hours later…
3:25 PM
@JosephWright Reading the discussion, I guess I'm somewhat sympathetic to the idea that an answer that says "this is a bug that has been fixed, upgrade your system" is an answer. Do we gain much from closing these questions rather than answering them so?

@AlanMunn Likely not, hence my answer (which I'll accept unless there is a big change in votes from the current position: there's not a massive number in it)

@JosephWright Sorry I hadn't realized you'd added an answer. I think that looks fine. One worry about advising local updates is that (i) they can lead to future problems and (ii) depending on the package, there may be dependencies that can get messy very quickly.

@AlanMunn Yes, but for people who can't or don't want to update their entire TeX system but do want a specific bug fixing, I'm not sure I see an alternative

@JosephWright No, I understand. I guess if we have a kind of canned response, we might want to note that local updating should be treated as a last resort.

@AlanMunn I could put 'use a copy of the file for a specific project only or install locally' but then one gets into the issue that it might not be a single file, ...

3:40 PM
@JosephWright The dependency issue is really the most problematic. Especially for packages that use expl3 code, I think, but also e.g. TikZ if someone has a really old system. Also biblatex/biber.

@AlanMunn Better text welcome: I'm just trying to summarise the discussion into a 'referenencable' piece of advice
@AlanMunn expl3 is not so bad as the TDS stuff is on CTAN and can be dropped in parallel to (say) siunitx. TikZ more tricky, biblatex even more so.
@AlanMunn If we just put 'update your system' then people who can't don't get an answer, and we end up telling them to do a local install anyway ...

@JosephWright Yes, I agree. I guess it's more a matter of not treating the two options as equally valid, i.e. discourage local installs unless absolutely necessary (for most users this is the best advice, I think.)

In other news ... I decided to bite the bullet and get a smartphone, and just had it 'ring' on my laptop (I went for an iPhone as I wanted something not-too-big)

@JosephWright That was the reason for my getting an iPhone too. The newer good android phones are huge. But now having had one for 3 years, I'm really sold on it.
@JosephWright The integration of Messages on your laptop is one of the super nice features of iOS.
@JosephWright How about I add this to the boilerplate text: "This option should be considered a last resort, since for more complex packages there may be package dependencies that will make local installation more complicated and error-prone."

@AlanMunn Sure

3:58 PM
The results of my card-making with TikZ :)

@SeanAllred Nice. You might want to move the number+suit a little more to the outside edge.

@AlanMunn That's configurable with my build script. Unfortunately that's the necessary border for the printer – at least according to their sorry excuse for a card builder online. I'm trying to get them on the phone to verify that (and sort out some express shipping options)
@AlanMunn Or is the index too close to the actual suits on the card?

@SeanAllred Well on the face cards and the higher number cards the index does seem too close.
@SeanAllred It's particularly noticeable in the hearts. e.g. 10 or J of hearts (because the heart is larger at the top than the bottom compared to all the other suits.)

@SeanAllred Not a duck joker? ;-)

@egreg I doubt she would get the joke :) but @PauloCereda can certainly customize this deck to whim
@AlanMunn Yeah, I'll see what I can do about tightening it up. If I do though, I'll have to make the suits smaller – would you think that's ok?
I'll have to scrunch them closer together

4:06 PM
@SeanAllred If you can't move the index out to the edge, then yes, I would probably try that. It might not need to be by much.
@SeanAllred The 10 of hearts is by far the most noticeable, since you have the double whammy: a two digit number and the heart shape.

@AlanMunn Yep, I can absolutely see it

@SeanAllred But if you shrink the interior just a bit it will also make the face cards look nicer too, I think.

@SeanAllred awesome! :)
@SeanAllred <3

4:25 PM
@AlanMunn The face cards just look so funky now…

@SeanAllred So increase the size of the face cards differentially to the size of the numbered cards, this way you'll get the illusion that they are the same (because the 10 of H now does look a lot better.)

@AlanMunn How do you mean? Were the face cards just as well before? Or do you mean just change it a little differently?

@SeanAllred You've decreased the size of the rectangle containing the face cards to match the size of the (virtual) rectangle containing the numbered card pips, but this gives the appearance that the face cards are too small. So you can increase their rectangle slightly so that they will be numerically different sizes but look the same.

@AlanMunn GOTCHA
Oops, caps lock
@AlanMunn :)

@SeanAllred Looking at the classic Bicycle brand deck, its index is very close to the edge of the card. But they also seem to do some funky things with the font: the 10 looks condensed to my eye.
@SeanAllred Bingo! That looks great.

4:38 PM
@AlanMunn :)
@AlanMunn Aw, why'd you have to say that? Now I want to do it. \resizebox?

@SeanAllred Of course you are also using the bridge deck dimensions rather than a poker deck for the cards themselves. (I think?)
@SeanAllred No don't. The ones you've done look really nice now.

@AlanMunn Okie dokie
@AlanMunn Nope, they should be poker size
The cards themselves are 816x1110 px

@SeanAllred Have I missed out on something here? This is a deck for a very special purpose right... :)
@SeanAllred Ok.

@AlanMunn Yes indeed :) My girlfriend and I play a lot of games together, so I'm making this desk to propose (hopefully this weekend if I can get it printed/shipped in time)

@AlanMunn Cards, not bingo. :)

4:42 PM
I plan to hold the three custom cards in reserve and swap out her hand when she gets up and leaves for something (tbd)

@SeanAllred Very neat idea. You could also do the classic 4 aces trick. :)

@AlanMunn ???

@AlanMunn He's going to to ask her girlfriend to be his macro system. <3

@AlanMunn Please enlighten me!
@PauloCereda You remind me of the two little quips you posted here years back… I'm trying to find them
Something about hearts being \fragile

You: Hey, are you defined as a robust command?
Girl: What?!
You: Because my heart is fragile for you. <3
Girl: WHAT?!
I tried this line once. :) No luck so far. :)

@SeanAllred <3 <3

@AlanMunn I'm liking the four aces trick :)

@SeanAllred It's a fairly simple trick: start with the four aces on the top of the deck. Divide the deck into two, and put the top half to the right. Now divide those two into two again, putting the top half on the right. Working from left to right, for each pile, put three cards from the top on the bottom of the pile, then put one card from the top onto the top of each remaining pile. Repeat for all the other piles and you'll end up with one ace on top of each pile.
@SeanAllred Of course as with all good tricks you need a nice spiel to go along with it.

@AlanMunn Got it :) Wondering what kind of spiel it should be though
I could make something up about secretly knowing a lot of magic tricks XD

@SeanAllred Yeah, I guess if you've never been so inclined before it might look a bit weird.

4:57 PM
@AlanMunn I'd say she's used to me being weird by this point :)

@SeanAllred ooh

@SeanAllred You could just say you just learned it online and though it was neat. And then end up with the A of D as the last card.

@PauloCereda oh goodness what have i said

We are a bunch of wacky people

@AlanMunn Hmm, I was thinking A/H, A/D, K/D, Q/D but the text on KQ/D could easily go unnoticed (good) until the A/D is revealed
I like it

5:01 PM
@SeanAllred I'm assuming you're sure those are the two valid responses...

@AlanMunn I like to think positively

@SeanAllred :)

@AlanMunn that's mean

@PauloCereda Not intended so. And different people would react differently to having only positive choices presented. But @SeanAllred I'm sure knows what he's doing.

@AlanMunn oh

5:06 PM
@SeanAllred Actually this is a much nicer version of the trick: books.google.com/…
@SeanAllred And the one I originally learned. (From that exact book.)

@AlanMunn This seems to require a bit more dexterity than that which I'm able to provide :)

@SeanAllred Yes, it's true that it requires a tiny bit of sleight of hand.
@SeanAllred The other version works by itself.

Anyone here? What was the expl3 function that analyzed a token list? I.e. saying the catcodes of each character, etc.

@Manuel \tl_show_analysis:N (requires l3tl-analysis)

8:26 PM
@egreg Thanks

9:24 PM
@egreg Another one we should move to the core I think

9:52 PM
@AlanMunn are you suggesting that deceit is a good way to start a relationship?
@JosephWright hopefully I'm done with tuenc:-)

10:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle :D Apparently so.

10:29 PM
@egreg I'm too tired to fix, you can post an answer:-)

10:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle Done.

@egreg bad way to end the day felt obliged to vote for you:-)

@DavidCarlisle Don't worry, I'm rep capped.

@egreg of course, I wouldn't have considered it otherwise.

@DavidCarlisle By the way, Palmeiras won also the last game in the championship.

@egreg sorry I don't follow Italian cricket, was that expected?

10:48 PM
@DavidCarlisle And Juventus won against Torino.

@egreg and India is about to win against England (barring miracles)

@DavidCarlisle Which was expected, of course

@egreg probably:-)
@egreg but maybe I should have faith in miracles

Hiiiiiiiiiiiii to all from Sicily.
I congratulate you all for your exceptional skill and speed. I humbly apologize for my large errors. I'm starting to learn and I like this site a lot especially for the help that is offered.
