@PaulGessler It might be a system-wide issue. Same deal with termmenu at present.

4 hours later…
7:43 AM
@cfr Your call, of course

8:37 AM
@PaulGessler Yes, thanks for information. The previous version hat jumplinesdoc.pdf, but I renamed it with the _. The uploaded version didn't contain the older version any longer

9:09 AM
I love spurious spaces! Another green tick from them. :)
@ChristianHupfer I like the order in the list of acknowledgments. ;-)

@egreg Well, that's just coincidence :-P I should change to alphabetical order... Who would be place at the top then...? Oh my, it's @DavidCarlisle :D
@egreg: By the way: Do you want to provide the language support for Italian words such as article, continued article

9:44 AM
Good morning everyone!

@ChristianHupfer I'll look into the package

@egreg: Well, you will find some strange issues there, it's still some rudimentary package ;-)

@ChristianHupfer sounds right to me

2 hours later…
11:47 AM
Holiday!

12:16 PM
@PauloCereda Have you been well shaken?

12:56 PM
@egreg Like a milkshake. :)
@egreg: working today?
@ArthurReutenauer: Now that I'm at home, it's easier to type than a shaky bus. :) Duckland is awesome! Although I also like the real meaning, city of Ana; our patron saint is Saint Anne. :)

1:13 PM
@PauloCereda: I need some Portuguese translations for the jumplines package. Do you accidentally know somebody who has knowledge in Portuguese? ;-)

1:27 PM
@ChristianHupfer Quack! :) Poke me, I will be very happy to be of service. :)

@PauloCereda Poking you is my second name :D

@ChristianHupfer ooh
@Christian: you know that @DavidCarlisle is our language expert, right? :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I could imagine the real etymology was not directly related to ducks ;-)

@PauloCereda @David who? :D

@ChristianHupfer David Guetta Beckham Gilmour Copperfield Bowie Tennant Hasselhoff Luiz Carlisle.

:)
@ArthurReutenauer ooh

1:41 PM
@PauloCereda Never heard of that bloke ... Is he famous? Important somehow ? :D

@ChristianHupfer A TeX bloke. :)

@PauloCereda \BlokeTeX?

@ChristianHupfer :)
@ChristianHupfer: Remember that David has the primacy of being part of the Holy LaTeX Trinity. :)

@PauloCereda Praise the mighty Lord who gave us LaTeX ;-)

@ChristianHupfer linhas de salto

1:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle Wow!
@JosephWright's birthday is in this month, stay tuned! We might need a cake! :)

24 mins ago, by Paulo Cereda
@Christian: you know that @DavidCarlisle is our language expert, right? :)

@DavidCarlisle The amusing thing is, I would literally translate it as you did. :)

@PauloCereda some people have no faith:

@DavidCarlisle: :D :D I cite Fox Mulder: "I want to believe"
Could be from (my) students ;-)

A: LaTeX/Math jokes

Paulo CeredaI never played with tikz before, so that's my first attempt. I simply love the following joke: \documentclass{article} \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary{decorations.pathmorphing} \usepackage{frcursive} \begin{document} Find $x$. \begin{tikzpicture} \draw (0,0) -- (4,0) node[midway,below] {4 cm...

Q: footruleskip already defined error when remove header line - abntex

Italo PessoaI'm trying to remove the line of the header. Doing some searches, the best answer was \renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{0pt} but when I add the package fancyhdr I get an error saying that the footruleskip command is already defined. @PauloCereda Your favorite class, I assume? :D

@ChristianHupfer Always. :)

2:26 PM
@PaulGessler: I've reported that issue with the double documentation files. @SeanAllred: I think, you should report it about termmenu as well.

@ChristianHupfer Are you working on this?

@Johannes_B: Nope, I just answered a previous question of that guy. Feel free to answer it (or comment)

@ChristianHupfer Already commented.

@Johannes_B Upvoted :D
@Johannes_B: Well, any new templates hunted down recently? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Damn templates.
\documentclass{abntex2}
\begin{document}
\chapter{lambada leguan}
\end{document}

2:38 PM
@PauloCereda Yes, just finished my lecture.

@ChristianHupfer ^^^^ What do you get running this?

@ChristianHupfer I did about a week ago T_T

3:14 PM
@SeanAllred Was it solved?
@Johannes_B: What should I get?

@ChristianHupfer I get an error.

@Johannes_B: I'll try to compile, but I think it will be an error too.
WTF is this?

Q: when using latex lstlistoflistings how can i have sections and subsections

@Johannes_B: Nope, no compilation error

@ChristianHupfer Strange. :-/

@Johannes_B I don't
@PauloCereda:

@Johannes_B: I think, your code is the answer. The line is removed

@ChristianHupfer I've yet to hear back from them.

3:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle Is that... lego minecraft?

@DavidCarlisle OMG

@SeanAllred it's lego wishing they'd invented minecraft:-)

@DavidCarlisle XD which reminds me, I still need to get that server going
perhaps I'll have the chance to upgrade to a VPS now that I'm up for renewal :)

@Johannes_B you have a missing number

@DavidCarlisle That is the error i get with the abntex2 MWE from above.

3:54 PM
@Johannes_B you know the drill, add \listfiles and report the generated list:-)

@Johannes_B but your main class file is older

@DavidCarlisle Yours is obviously newer. I ran the latest TL14, just as @christian.

3:57 PM
@Johannes_B that's tl2015

@DavidCarlisle Yeah, i know. Not enough hdd space right now to run two systems.

@Johannes_B well diff against @ChristianHupfer's list then

I'll return later on

@Johannes_B your filelist shows fixltx2e loaded before the class

3:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle Was to test if it fixes the error. but did not.
@DavidCarlisle @christian is loading abntex2cite which fixes the problem. -> tex.stackexchange.com/a/248589/37907

@Johannes_B was going to say the list was different. So three different \listfiles to compare, each using a different source docuement. fail :(

@DavidCarlisle Let's just assume the whole thing is fixed in the new release in TL 2015 :-)
Anybody seen that one?

Q: How to change content and format of messages in the console window

brunohI am using TeXshop, and I want to know if it is possible to change 1/ the content of the messages sent by the latex compiler (like toggle on or off the warnings, the information about loading some fonts etc.) 2/ the format of these messages (like line spacing, length of lines / line breaking et...

4:14 PM
@egreg -- we are resolutely not disagreeing about the problems of designing math symbol fonts. but you've not answered my basic question -- do you (or does anybody else here) know any recorded information on how to make decisions about what symbols are sufficiently related that their shapes and dimensions should be consistent? i am acquainted with a very few font designers who have relevant knowledge, but even they require guidance from persons with actual mathematical knowledge.

@barbarabeeton No, sorry: I'm basing my remarks just on personal taste.

@Johannes: it seems you already like ABNT too. :)

@egreg -- ah, well. someday i'll finish compiling my promised list of publications and other resources covering math composition. a font/symbol design/creation collection would be a really nice adjunct to that, i think, so if anyone has any information, please send it along!

4:33 PM
@PauloCereda What do you mean?

2 hours ago, by Paulo Cereda
ABNT! /shakes fist

4:49 PM
@Johannes_B At some point you said you didn't like this template. :)
@barbarabeeton Thanks. :)

@PauloCereda I don't like any template. Not even the one our university provides. :-)

@Johannes_B :)

1 hour later…
6:20 PM
@PauloCereda I usually run away as soon as I see ABNT mentioned.
My train is 41 minutes late. At least they still had some wine for me. :)

6:38 PM
@PauloCereda What time is the procession?

Perhaps this is a silly request, but does LaTeX3 have facilities to calculate infinite sums, or derivatives, and so on?
I'm pretty sure there's no package and LaTeX2e doesn't have it either.

@1010011010 Why should it? It's TeX, not Octave or Mathematica.

@egreg Just to show off that LaTeX can do anything. There's literally 0 reason otherwise to implement it, is there? :-)

@1010011010 no need for latex3 \count0=0 \loop\advance\count0 1 \iftrue\repeat see infinite sum...

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. And the derivatives?

6:51 PM
@1010011010 Feel free to try it. I believe it's a completely useless feature; interfacing with a math application is surely much more efficient. In any case, if you expect something that says that the sum of 1/n² is π²/6 you're on the wrong track.

Yep, same. I'd just code it as a "fun project" (if I ever would . .) .

@1010011010 \def\f{x}1 see derivative of f.

@DavidCarlisle wow!! amazing

@1010011010 glad to be of service, but you should thank Professor Knuth, not me.

@DavidCarlisle What's the TeX command for that?

7:01 PM
@1010011010 supposed to use latex of course:
 latex \\thanks
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159265-2.6-1.40.16 (TeX Live 2015) (preloaded format=latex)
 restricted \write18 enabled.

Runaway argument?
! Paragraph ended before \thanks was complete.

@DavidCarlisle Knuth would never approve of that kind of a stunt, you know that. ;-)

@DavidCarlisle -- amstex did define \thanks{...} to produce a first-page footnote. but it's still the case that some format/macro collection other than plain is required. the only thing i feel comfortable inserting after a bare tex ** is \relax.

@barbarabeeton Does LaTeX's \documentclass issue a \relax? Or the format?

@1010011010 neither, why?

@DavidCarlisle Because of what you said: I only feel comfortable inserting a \relax after a bare tex **.

7:10 PM
@1010011010 latex isn't designed to make @barbarabeeton comfortable.
4

@1010011010 -- i said that, not david. what (knuthian) tex is expecting there is the name of a format (@DavidCarlisle, please correct me if i'm wrong); what i use bare tex for is to check hyphenations, and \relax avoids some annoyance.

@barbarabeeton yes in general it expands macros while looking for the commandline and the first non expandable command terminates that, so \relax is good, but first token in the expansion of \documentclass is \let which is also safe enough.

@DavidCarlisle -- but of course if you present \documentclass to knuthian tex at the ** you get "! Undefined control sequence.".

@barbarabeeton I'm sure he uses latex really.

@DavidCarlisle -- sorry, nope. (if he submits something to tugboat, he sends it in plain. and i've seen other examples of his input files. he'll use packages like manmac, but no latex.)

7:22 PM
@barbarabeeton nah he just translates back to plain before showing you, to maintain the illusion

@DavidCarlisle -- (sticks tongue out at david, who deserves it)
8

@barbarabeeton I get no respect in this place :(

yo'
@DavidCarlisle you get as much respect as you deserve :D

1 hour later…
8:34 PM
Maybe there's somebody in here that can elaborate a little on the .enc files used by otftotfm. What's the relation between the used base encoding file and the encodings like T1, OT1, etc.?
There's a default encoding file called ec.enc which has all 256 glyph slots occupied (I'm guessing it has the most general encoding scheme with most of the standard glyphs in the standard places). So does it matter at all which .enc file I used and what I'm supposed to declare in my font definition file? And inputenc I guess.

9:01 PM
Good maen

9:16 PM
@ChristianHupfer hey

@1010011010: Still savaging through glyphs and expl3 stuff? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Expl3? I refuse to make use of such sorcery!
2

@1010011010 The dark side (expl3) can be very convincing ... but sometimes I've the impression the codes are longer ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Yes, they are.

@ChristianHupfer If you want short code, just let arara obfuscate some plain tex code
xii.tex style

9:24 PM
@egreg Good plan. :)

@1010011010: You mentioned arara ... and the evil sorcerer @PauloCereda appears :D

@egreg I am so sorry, I was already in church when you poke me. :) The procession started at 17h.
@ChristianHupfer bwawawawawawa I mean, hello. :)

@ChristianHupfer What was the scheme again? Attach a rock to the witch's leg and see if he stays afloat... if he doesn't, then I guess we were wrong
If he's a witch, he will spawn an l3galley and sail off to some hot island resort

@1010011010 You opened Pandora's box :D @PauloCereda ... your turn...

@ChristianHupfer I will not buy this witch, it's scratched. :)

9:28 PM
@PauloCereda No, not those lines .... the stuff from the Holy Grail

@ChristianHupfer uh-oh... quack?

@PauloCereda: The witch scene .... where Sir Belvedere reasons about that girl whether she's a witch or not

@ChristianHupfer I fail to remember. I know there's a duck involved. :)

@PauloCereda I fear you see ducks everythere. I remember it to be a goose .... :D

9:53 PM
@ChristianHupfer ooh :)

@PauloCereda \let\goose\duck ... ok? :-)

@ChristianHupfer :)

@PauloCereda: If you provide the Portuguese translations do I have to make some considerations that it is Brazilian Portuguese or aren't there differences I have to concern?

@ChristianHupfer I believe it's highly dependant on your text. Maybe the sentence could be equal in both variants. :)

@PauloCereda I would assume that it's quite common for both 'styles'. I can't imagine, that something like list of articles or Continued on page ... is very different?

10:05 PM
@ChristianHupfer No, but as I said, I need to see the sentences. :)
For example, file in PT-PT is ficheiro and arquivo in PT-BR. :)

@PauloCereda: Well, anyway, I will poke you at the right time when I am about to prepare the next release

@ChristianHupfer sure :)

@PauloCereda: I think, it's not that complicated ... no sentences, rather 'terms' or single words

@ChristianHupfer Ah cool. :)

@PauloCereda: For all other languages I ask @DavidCarlisle :D

10:09 PM
@ChristianHupfer mpango mzuri

@TorbjørnT. You made much efforts to prettify that post: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/248590/…
@DavidCarlisle Suaheli?

@ChristianHupfer Was that ironic? I didn't do much at all.

@ChristianHupfer swaheli in English:-)

@TorbjørnT.: Nope, I meant it. I stopped after the 'code' ...
@DavidCarlisle: Suaheli in German ;-)

@ChristianHupfer not surprising really, since you pronounce w all wrong:-)

10:15 PM
@ChristianHupfer I only marked the ToC examples as code, so that they (hopefully) make sense.

@DavidCarlisle: Urong, as aluays :D
@TorbjørnT.: I doubt we will ever see/hear anything again from the OP

@ChristianHupfer Devemos conversar em Português , para evitar argumento.

@DavidCarlisle We'll see. I guess the weird stuff are placeholders that will be populated by some script or other. But I don't really think that part is relevant to the question, which seems to be just about numbering listings within sections, and reformatting the list of listings a bit.

@TorbjørnT. in reply to me? :-)

@DavidCarlisle: No comprendo, hablo espanol un poco solamento
@DavidCarlisle No, to me ;-)
@TorbjørnT. Feel free to answer it ;-)

10:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oopsy, I clicked the wrong arrow.

@ChristianHupfer Latinamque linguas omnes sunt.

@DavidCarlisle: In Friburgam natus sum et lingua romanum hablo

@ChristianHupfer what have the Romans ever done for us?

@DavidCarlisle: Wine, safe streets, the aqueduct? ;-)
@DavidCarlisle: And of course: Romanes eunt domus

@ChristianHupfer good night:-)

10:28 PM
@DavidCarlisle they've probably \let\caligula\relax
Sorry, my input isn't worth very much tonight. :-)

Have a nice time, I want to improve/extent a package ... chat is procrastination :D

Quick typesetting question. I'm writing feedback to students using TeX, and wanted to use the symbol $\LaTeX$. I have been receiving error messages which I've narrowed down to that as the cause. Is there some specific package I need to call?

@JMoravitz: \LaTeX does it as well, no need to use $...$, but if you use PlainTeX, \LaTeX won't work of course

Sorry, the dollar signs are habit from using MathJax in the math.se chatrooms

@JMoravitz Which error?

10:36 PM
"You can't use '\spacefactor' in math mode"

@JMoravitz: Ah, oh. But you don't need a specific package
@JMoravitz: Do you have used a \@.... command?

@JMoravitz That's probably because you've used it in math mode ...

Indeed. Thanks, removing the dollar signs fixed the issue. Much too used to MathJax and the habits from that are showing in my actual TeX

@Manuel Here is the same presentation from last time but with colors chosen from ColorBrewer. ece.mcgill.ca/~amahaj1/temp/sobercolors.pdf This may not hurt your eyes as much. @barbarabeeton: Thanks for the hint.

11:11 PM
@Aditya Yes, definitely, that's a more “calm” (or “sober” as you wrote) color set.

@PauloCereda To expand on Christian’s question about the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese from Portugal, are there any circumstances when you as a Brazilian feel you can’t understand pt-PT? Or pt-CV or pt-MZ, for that matter.
