@crocket most tex users use a tex editor that does not hide the markup, such as texworks or use (as I do) genaral text/programming editors such as emacs
@crocket this site?, the latex manual and latex companion books? source2e.pdf ? (that one is probably OK, it's maintained by Karl who maintains texlive, although I haven't looked at it for years)
@crocket the latex book and latex companion books from Addison Wesley are the official reference manuals. source2e.pdf is the documented source code so has the full details (and is free, but not such a light read).
The best documentation on \string that I found was https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Plain_TeX#Special_control_sequence_name
I searched the following materials, but they didn't explain \string.
http://tug.org/texinfohtml/latex2e.html

A few years ago, the lmodern package was a good way to have high quality fonts by simply adding :
\usepackage{lmodern}
Nowadays, lmodern seems less popular. I'm wondering if it is because LaTeX default fonts received some improvements which make lmodern useless? Or because the package is aband...
@crocket no, sometimes it is free, not in this case. Odd that you should be happy to pay for a beginners guide but expect the reference to be free, I'd expect it to be the other way round. There is a mass of freely available information though so it's not necessary to buy the books unless you wish to.
@JosephWright I know it's sort of fast but it seems wrong to have to read unicodedata.txt multiple times which is presumably what happens if you split it up too much, unless you can set up hooks to capture data then just read it once.. by the way do you know if anything ever came from tex.stackexchange.com/questions/249820/…
@DavidCarlisle My thoughts too. I'm not sure what Bruno did but I suspect it's best not to go that way here: the gain isn't worth the complexity.
@DavidCarlisle I've currently got the sfcode (punctuation) separate from the casing: that could be combined but perhaps is best done in two (Fast) parts
@egreg If I understand your question. No, I get a large stack of error messages for all my images - I don't even know how many and if it includes all - my thesis is large. It used to export fine... 3 months ago when I last opened it. Not sure if I am forgetting something or changed somethinge else !
@egreg and what would the solution to that be please?
@egreg I need to leave now, Could we continue tomorrow? I will be at my office at 8am - Central EU time, might you be in here again at some point - or how best to reach you? I am very very grateful!
If I have defined a curve with a complicated shape that is only easy to describe as a whole, but I want to do something special with only part of it (such as make part of it red), how can I do this?
I'd like to have something along the lines of \draw[only between 0.2 and 0.8] "full curve description"
As a concrete example, I'd like to do some special stuff with certain parts of this curve:
\draw (1,1.5) .. controls (1,2.25) and (-1,2.25) .. (-1,2) .. controls (-1,1.75) and (1,1.75) .. (1,2.5) .. controls (1,3.25) and (-1,3.25) .. (-1,3) .. controls (-1,2.75) and (1,2.75) .. (1,3.5);
@Danu you can use the question site you know.... tikz supports clipping as far as i know so you can draw the whol e thing but clip to a specified rectangle
@DavidCarlisle I always feel like my questions are way too localized to be very useful.
@DavidCarlisle Hmm, okay, that seems like a step in the right direction; However, I'd like to draw part of the curve in this style: [(-),thick,red]: Will the end markings still be put on?
@Danu but code formatting in chat is (by design) very limited and it means that you are just asking questions of the one (in this case) other person in the room, rather than having it float on the site to be picked up when anyone has the time to answer
@Danu according to my profile I've 5,730 answers, think how long it takes to write \documentclass that many times and (longer to) guess all the packages required to make each fragment work....
@Danu it's guessing the packages that's hard especially (as I noticed egreg guessed today) fragment works for everyone who tries it unless you happen to know it breaks for \usepackage[czech]{babel} when the OP hadn't mentioned that any language package was involved. If I'm feeling tired I simply don't bother trying questions without a MWE.
After finishing the toc, how do you specify a section where you wanna start writing something? For instance, say you wanna begin writing in chapter X, section A.
Perhaps I did something wrong since I got new text added to the table of contents.
