@PauloCereda a dream come true? :) bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-22379931

@cmhughes oooh dat duck. :)

@PauloCereda :) I also saw the release notes about arara 4.0, sounds great!

@cmhughes Ah. :) Hope you like the new ideas, we are still testing them.

!!/battle

1:02 AM
@PauloCereda could you tell me if I have my terminology correct:
(the orb tags bit)

@cmhughes I think they are directive arguments. :)

@PauloCereda ok, roger that! will correct immediately :)

Unless you are talking about the rule context, then they will be orb tags. :)

@PauloCereda I'm referring to them in the context of % arara: indent: {overwrite: on}, so I think that they are directive arguments.... (?) :)

@cmhughes Yes, you are right. :)

1:06 AM
@PauloCereda sweet :) thanks :)
@PauloCereda how did you know when arara was ready for release?

@cmhughes You mean, with v1? :)

@PauloCereda mainly the version that you released to ctan - version 3.0? :)

@cmhughes Hm let me see... once upon a time... I tried to add all the features I had in mind. Then we exhaustively tested the code, until we said, "well, it's enough". :)

@PauloCereda fair enough :) have there been any 'nasty/angry' e-mails?

If your code works with your test suite, the app is ready. :)
@cmhughes Nope. :) But since I messed up with the shell script in the first submission, I got some emails telling me that the script had a problem, with suggestions to fix it. Then I made an update to CTAN, fixing the problem. :)

1:10 AM
@PauloCereda yes, that sounds good... I suppose the only question is: is my test suite good enough? :)

@cmhughes Don't think about it too much, otherwise your code will never be released. :)
Set a simple goal, then publish it. :)

@PauloCereda I think that's sage advice :)

You can always fix stuff afterwards and update. :)

@PauloCereda good point :)
@PauloCereda btw, you are in the acknowledgements :)

@cmhughes aww thanks, but it's not necessary.
I did nothing, I don't even know Perl.

1:13 AM
@PauloCereda it certainly is :)

@cmhughes @PauloCereda Hi guys.
@cmhughes Latexindent.pl is VERY good enough to go to CTAN IMHO. :)

@HarishKumar Hi Harish :) Thanks very much for your continued support :) and you are certainly chief tester :)

I agree with @PauloCereda about releases
@cmhughes Oh come on I just tried indent on my rubbish codes :)

@HarishKumar Hi Harish! :)

@cmhughes So When latexindent is going to CTAN? ;-)
@PauloCereda How are you doing Paulo? :)
@cmhughes One suggestion (more of a request) I have

1:17 AM
@HarishKumar I'm fine, thanks. :) And you?

@PauloCereda Going at 120kmph ;-) Its exam time for us so lot of work at college :_(

@HarishKumar fire away :)

Arrgggg lot of typos
@cmhughes This becomes void after indent does to CTAN, so never mind :-) //changed mind ;-)
It was about an installer for indent just for the sake of making it complete (as standalone).

@HarishKumar ok, no problem :)
@HarishKumar your codes were very helpful- they highlighted a lot of issues :)

@cmhughes Have you thought something about \end{document} thing within filecontents?
@cmhughes Thanks <3

1:24 AM
@HarishKumar that's on the todo list... :)

Well, time for me to go to Bedfordshire. :)
Good night, friends. :)

@PauloCereda good night Paulo! :)

@PauloCereda Goodnight Paulo. Have a sound sleep (without dreaming about TeX.SX ;-) )

@cmhughes, @HarishKumar: Good night, Chris! Good night, Harish! :)

@cmhughes Very nice. Please ping me if you did anything on it. :)

1:28 AM
@HarishKumar will do =)

All active users should take a close look on circuit macros latex, error noCurrentPoint. Herbert’s answer shows, that question is TL. Two other users with 4 answers show, that it is apparently better to close this, before it gets more strange “answers”.

math texxies
what's a good book on group theory

kan
6:09 AM
@Gnintendo Hello, I can suggest Dummit and Foote (an algebra text, as opposed to a text devoted to group theory), but you might also want to look at Rotman's group theory text. But I can be a bit more specific if you told me what you'd like the reference to cover ...
@Gnintendo ...(for physicists (and most chemists), group theory is synonymous with (what mathematicians call) representation theory while mathematicians study groups for themselves (of course, deep things in group theory are borrowed from the ideas in representation theory)).

2 hours later…
8:11 AM
anybody there?

@Speravir Oh weird. Not sure what happened there, but it sounds like fun. I should try it again some time to entertain people if they're feeling a bit bored.

kan
@FrankMittelbach I am, Marshall! :)
(or, Marshal perhaps.)

ok so .. anybody here that knows how to get > or < into a bit of code in an answer?

kan
@FrankMittelbach I seem to have no issues with the usual way of doing it.

good: then perhaps you can tell me what I did wrong in that answer and/or fix it
0
A: Citing a reference in a table

Frank MittelbachWithout an example this is only an educated guess, but basically what you are looking for is table in which one column is holding a formula (ie in math mode) and one or more columns that hold text. Now most of the commands for math do not work in text and vice versa which is why you are seeing s...

8:20 AM
Sure, mean while...

A: Formatting Sand-Box

kanTrying to see if I can put in < and >: $1 > 2$ while $2 < 3$.

@FrankMittelbach Oh, I know the issue now!
the problem is, code is within the list, so, you'll have to have twice as much space, as you'd normally.
@Frank I've edited it. Could you please review it?

@kan thanks, stupid me, could have thought of that ... I was thinking it is due to the first < being interpreted

kan
@FrankMittelbach Well, I have been bitten once by that, and had figured that out by a sheer guess. :)

kan
8:50 AM
Looks like another way is to <!> in its own line leaving a line after the list and before the code (as the first answer on that meta post shows.) @Frank :)

9:26 AM
@kan <!-- --> seems better: it's an empty comment.

kan
@egreg Oh, I see. Thanks! : )
I am now investigating some align things.

9:49 AM
@JosephWright: Is the following a suitable solution:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xparse,}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\prop_new:N \l_md_dim_prop
\prop_new:N \l_md_skip_prop

\prop_put:Nnx \l_md_dim_prop { width } { 2cm }
\prop_put:Nnx \l_md_skip_prop { above } { 1cm~plus~0.2cm }
\NewDocumentCommand \UseLength { m m }
 {
   \prop_get:cn { l_md_#1_prop } { #2}
 }
\NewDocumentCommand \xUseLength { m m }
 {
  \quark_if_no_value:nTF
    {\prop_get:cn { l_md_#1_prop } { #2} }
    { \prop_get:cn { l_md_#1_prop } { #2} }
      { 0pt }
%\prop_get:cnNTF
%      { l_md_#1_prop } { #2 }

kan
@egreg Is the tab character also a macro? (I mean the & of align).

@kan No, its category code is 4, which qualifies & as the alignment character

kan
@egreg Oh, OK. That is very helpful. So, I'll have to change the category code for redefinition, is that right?\

@kan Can you tell what you have in mind?

kan
@egreg Sure. Before I kill TeX, let me tell you my laziness. I'd like to have a alignment character which would add a quad space after alignment.
I have a very big align environment, inside of which there is an aligned environment, which is braced. I am trying to get the numbering come on the same line, but there obviously is no space.

9:58 AM
@kan The alignment doesn't fit. Adding \quad somewhere would not help

kan
@egreg oh, no they are two distinct problems.
Surprise!!
@egreg ^^

@kan I don't catch it.

kan
@egreg I meant, all though there is enough space, as witnessed by equations going far enough, the numbering is not getting aligned.
@egreg Actually, I am having a minipage and pushing minipage to the right with negative hspace.
But, even after a ridiculous amount of negative hspace, the equation number still resides below that line there, as in the picture. May be it is fond of that place... :)
@egreg Am I being comprehensible?

@kan Not much, TBH. ;-)

kan
@egreg I think I got it! The negative hspace does not help.
@egreg I can post some code but I am not sure the other person would be happy with my posting her calculations (she is writing this up for publishing).
But, I think negative hspace does not help.

10:09 AM
@JosephWright: The following works. I changed the order of the false part.
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xparse,}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\prop_new:N \l_md_dim_prop
\prop_new:N \l_md_skip_prop

\prop_put:Nnx \l_md_dim_prop { width } { 2cm }
\prop_put:Nnx \l_md_skip_prop { above } { 1cm~plus~0.2cm }
\NewDocumentCommand \UseLength { m m }
 {
   \prop_get:cn { l_md_#1_prop } { #2}
 }
\NewDocumentCommand \xUseLength { m m }
 {
  \quark_if_no_value:nTF
    { \prop_get:cn { l_md_#1_prop } { #2} }
    { \prop_get:cn { l_md_#1_prop } { #2} }
    {  0pt\msg_term:n {no~entry~in~prop} }
Maybe you want to add this to your answer.

@MarcoDaniel no idea what this is supposed to do but the code looks wrong to me

@MarcoDaniel in any case i see a bunch of question marks in front of me looking at xUseLength
@MarcoDaniel I'll have a looko
or even a look

@FrankMittelbach About the intention? I am preparing my first expl3-package. All length (skip/dim) are save in two different property lists. Now I want to provide a frontend for the user to work with the length defined by keys.
@FrankMittelbach Thanks.

Q: Best figure size adjustment when dealing with different image sizes

Paulo CeredaI have a script which automatically creates a beamer presentation with several .ps images, each one inserted in a distinct frame. Those images consist on graphs built using GraphViz. The script is basically iterating on this code snippet: \begin{frame}{Image 1} \begin{figure} \inclu...

Usually, we don't put a greeting or a “thank you” in our posts. While this might seem strange at first, it is not a sign of lack of politeness, but rather part of our trying to keep everything very concise. Accepting and upvoting answers is the preferred way here to say “thank you” to users who helped you. — Papiro 15 mins ago
Almost 3 years later my THANKS is removed?! And I even get an advice?!
This is some minor edit we can always avoid.

10:34 AM
@PauloCereda Unfortunately somebody is accepting these edits by Papiro. :(

10:47 AM
@egreg Indeed. :(

@egreg I ;-) -- I think if i don't accept small edits by Papiro, we will loos an active member. Of course most of the edits are really ....

@MarcoDaniel And I get an advice to not post THANKS in my first question, almost three years ago?
I'm mad. :)

@PauloCereda The first steps here. This first my second answer at TeX.SX

@MarcoDaniel 40 edits to answers or questions in the last two days! Unfortunately most of them are just "removed thanks".

kan
\tag expands to something incomprehensible!

10:54 AM
@kan It's normally disallowed and takes different meanings depending on the environment it's used in.

kan
Hm! So, I am giving up on this.
I don't think this can be salvaged.
equations are big and she wants to have the numbers on the same line.
And, she does not prefer it on the left.
Paper is finite on both sides, unfortunately.
The point is that, aligned environment wraps its contents inside an unbreakable box. So, these commands (both \displaybreak and \allowdisplaybreaks) do not have any effect. You may want to look at texdoc.net/pkg/amsldoc, towards the end of page 6. — kan 29 mins ago
@egreg Is that comment not relevant there?
I just saw your comment.

@kan It's a good comment.

kan
11:12 AM
OK, officially, I have given up.
With exams around, does not look very wise of me.

@MarcoDaniel you don't want that concept for real I guess. Not in this form because it would be much too slow. It need to be baked into the typesetting functions in the first place to be usable. But anyway ... you got my attempt as an answer ;-)

@FrankMittelbach Thank you very much.

@MarcoDaniel by the way your code above didn't work for a number of reasons, some of which made it look like it worked (but that was more by chance :-) eg testing for a quark which was always false -> conclusion always write unti tests day one that test all variations of wrong input
@PauloCereda which reminds me .. need to look at your work in that space

@FrankMittelbach Uh-oh, dandelion? :)

@PauloCereda That's always confusing.

@PauloCereda I'm still trying to get to grips with php to get my store up and running.

@NicolaTalbot ooh a store! :) Just poke me if you need any help with PHP. It's been a while, and I'm probably rusty, but I might help. :)

@egreg There, we can now all share some ice cream. :-)
Talking about pictures, I'm off to an art exhibition now. Catch you all later.

Happy birthday, @PeterGrill!

@NicolaTalbot Have a nice time!

@NicolaTalbot Have fun! :)

kan
12:46 PM
Oh, I am in time for the icecream, do I get a cone too?

@PauloCereda Is it? Happy birthday, @PeterGrill

@egreg Google+ told me, let's hope the big G is right. :)

@kan Right click and "download ice cream" from the contextual menu.

kan
@NicolaTalbot Oh, have fun! And, you also told that the illustrator for your books is presenting her work! Wishes to her.
@egreg Done. :) I gave it a star too, so that others can locate it easily off the map ;-)

@egreg: you mentioned homebrew the other day. How's the experience going on? Not so much stuff like MacPorts/Fink, but I guess it's more stable. :)

kan
12:50 PM
@egreg On another news, I just sorted this issue out differently! Asked her to simplify things by pulling out common factors, thereby arranging terms so that there is some space and then, \raisetag did the job. :)

@PauloCereda I switched from macports to homebrew

@topskip Me too. :)

The next time somebody asks me about LaTeX and I have an exam, I am going to have to refuse.

Mark WibrowEDIT: A new version is added below which uses a single decoration to do most of the work. I'm never going to claim this is (a) straightforward (b) robust, or (c) elegant, but it might show one way of getting close to the requirements. It only works with objects made up of straight lines. \docum...

@PauloCereda Good until now. But Pari-GP continues to fail compilation. :(

kan
@egreg Thanks for that texdef answer. the man page uses latexdef, while when I put it on the terminal, I only hear complaints, no macro expansions.

1:04 PM
@kan I already pointed that out to Martin: no distribution makes the connection latexdef = 'texdef -t latex'.

kan
@egreg Oh, so let me look at my bashrc...

@kan Not even the late Psmith understood !!/latexdef

kan
This redefinition is not there... may be what if I simply added it?
@egreg oh, he'd be revived, with determined @Paulo. :)

@kan alias latexdef='texdef -t latex' should do

kan
@egreg It did! :)

kan
1:55 PM
@Joseph one of my flags is awaiting your review (there are three, but this one pertains to CWing a question, which has happened...)

@kan I will of course do it

kan
Okay! :)

2:57 PM
@kan Thanks for the book recommendations

kan
@Gnintendo Sure thing, but beware of the remarks I made. If you want to be a little more specific, I can tell you something more specific too.

@kan It was in relevance to computer science
but was looking for graduate-level introduction for somebody who already had an undergraduate applied math degree

kan
@Gnintendo Then, I am happy with my suggestions, I'll stick to them. :)

all right :)
@PauloCereda What Arara 4.0 already? I remember when it wasn't even on TeX Live. [acting like I'm old when I'm not]

@Gnintendo We are working on it. :)
@Gnintendo: speaking of which, welcome back. :)

3:04 PM
thanks, I've had a busy semester
busy busy busy busy
(and less questions about TeX as I've learned more, funny how that works)
My most recent TeX project was the conversion of the old amateur radio club constitution at our university (I'm the new President somehow)
we are in the lucky position of most of our officers knowing TeX to some degree, but I wrote up a little guide for those that didn't ( github.com/GBeauregard/osuarcconstitution if you care)

@Gnintendo Look at the number of questions @DavidCarlisle and I have asked on the site. ;-)

I'm actually pretty happy with how that constitution came out: I'm not sure I agree with the template I was given for formatting it, but the way I was able to follow it was pretty elegant (imo)
@egreg but alas, you are extraordinary cases! Until I get around to learning how to write a TeX package, the ability to decipher existing TeX code eludes me. I am currently restricted to dancing around macros.

@Gnintendo That's how one starts injecting bugs in new packages. ;-)

heheh

3:33 PM
@kan Thanks! Yes, Magdalene had some of her work exhibited as well. She had a lovely horse, a dancer and a Mediterranean street scene.

@NicolaTalbot Yay!

@PauloCereda Ooh, I hadn't noticed that had lyrics before. Yay, lalalalalaa!

Can you decide with your mental arithmetic calculation?

@Bugbusters Can I eat both? :)

@PauloCereda: No.
Assume we are in the quick queue so 30 seconds should be considered too long for the next persons behind us.

4:09 PM
@Bugbusters Depends how much you like the crust :-)

kan
@egreg Could you help me with optional arguments in macros, sir? :)

@NicolaTalbot :-)

@kan Of course!

kan
@egreg Hah! I am looking forward to defining the \thmfig which I have but with two arguments:
\documentclass{amsart}
\usepackage{amsthm}
\newtheorem{theorem}{Theorem}
\makeatletter
\let\oldfig\thefigure
\newcommand{\thmfig}[1]{%
\renewcommand{\figurename}{Figure for Theorem}%
\renewcommand{\thefigure}{\ref{#1}}%
\caption{}
\addtocounter{figure}{-1}
}
\renewcommand{\thefigure}{\oldfig}%
\makeatother
\usepackage[demo]{graphicx}
\usepackage{lipsum}
\begin{document}
 \begin{theorem}[Pythagoras] \label{thm:pythagoras}
For a right triangle ABC, right angled at $A$, $a^2 = b^2 + c^2$.
 \end{theorem}
One compulsory and one optional. So, I am lost on what the syntax is.
And, please don't scold me for the hack. :)

@kan I can't see two arguments.

kan
4:24 PM
@egreg No, now there is only one. But, I want to define it with two arguments. The second argument would be passed as \caption{#2}, I believe.

Anyway, \newcommand{\foo}[2][<default>]{...} defines \foo admitting the syntaxes \foo{<arg>} or \foo[<oarg>]{<arg>}. In the body of the definition you refer to the optional argument by #1 and to the mandatory one by #2.

kan
@egreg Oh, OK. I'll post the modified macro here in a bit... I am lovin' it! :)

@kan But I don't see "optional" arguments: one just uses \caption.

kan
@egreg Hmm, how do I say: I want \thmfig to take an optional argument...
In place of <default>, does the default code go?

@egreg Time for xparse or a keyval syntax ;-)

4:29 PM
@MarcoDaniel Heresy! Of course, xparse. :)

kan
\newcommand{\thmfig}[2][]{%
\renewcommand{\figurename}{Figure for Theorem}%
\renewcommand{\thefigure}{\ref{#2}}%
\caption{#1}
\addtocounter{figure}{-1}
}
@egreg ^^ : )

From Slashdot:
First time accepted submitter PAjamian writes "Maintainers of the Anaconda installer in Fedora have taken it upon themselves to show passwords in plaintext on the screen as they are entered into the installer. Following on the now recanted statements of security expert Bruce Schneier, Anaconda maintainers have decided that it is not a security risk to show passwords on your screen in the latest Alpha release of Fedora 19. Members of the Fedora community on the Fedora devel mailing list are showing great concern over this change in established security protocols."

Could someone please compile and let me know if it compiles and if possible also a screenshot of the output?
It would be very helpful!

@kan It compiles fine for me. Screenshot coming up:

@NicolaTalbot Same for me

Hmm, the OP complains, however. :)

@kan Old packages, perhaps?

kan
@NicolaTalbot Yes, I'll have to work this out with the OP in comments. Heading there...
Thank you @NicolaTalbot and @egreg

Welcome back @psmith!

@dıʞsdoʇ Psmith, the TeX bot: Good afternoon! I'm Psmith, the friendly TeX bot - the p in my name is silent, as in pshrimp. I'm here as a companion to our fellow users in the typographic land. As you probably noticed, I always reply under Paulo's account, but do not despair, I say, my replies are always preceded by my own name. Enjoy your stay at TeX.sx! If you need any help, just ask our chat residents. Cheerio!

@BeamerExperts: Is it allowed to use two \usethemes: like \usetheme{A} and \usetheme{B}: this could be one thing that the OP is doing wrong...

Can only moderators delete tags/vote for deletion? seems a little pointless to me at least, (there's and ) so it could just as well be deleted.

kan
@TorbjørnT. I think the only way of getting rid of a tag, making it questionless... not sure though.

hi guys
really dumb question: if I want to italicize everything inside a table, what should I write
and where_

@MarioS.E. \itshape right after \begin{table}.

@TorbjørnT. Thanks :)

@kan Ok. Do you think that one question should be retagged?
@MarioS.E. By the way, related question that popped up today: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/112361/…

kan
5:51 PM
@TorbjørnT. Yes! As far as I can recall from my Math.SE experience.

@TorbjørnT. But will this change affect only the immediately table or will affect something else along the document?

@MarioS.E. Only the stuff within that table environment is affected.

@TorbjørnT. but aren't I renewing the command? how does it go "back"?

@MarioS.E. The redefinition will be local to the table environment.

6:04 PM
@MarioS.E. Every environment forms a group (in TeXnical sense); "normal" assignments are local to groups and will be undone at its end. The truth is much more complex than can be written here, but this is sufficient for most applications.

@egreg @PauloCereda: Hmmm.. Where'd you get that from? It's not in the TeX.SE profile?
And May the 4th be with you as well.

@PeterGrill G+ told me. :)
@PeterGrill ooh! I see what you did there. :)

@PauloCereda oh, forgot about G+
