A: beamer shrink note pages

Martin SchröderA note page isn't implemented as a normal beamer frame, but typeset using its own code which can be found in beamerbasenotes.sty (cf. \beamer@outsideframenote, ll. 59-103). Therefore, using normal frame options like shrink or allowframebreaks isn't possible.

@egreg TBH, I think this is a very valid question. It's really a misery how little help LaTeX gives on constructing and manipulating such basic structures as lists. That the OP found a(n inferior) workaround doesn't make it less interesting.

@StephanLehmke LaTeX lists are "typesetting oriented". Manipulating items needs at least something more than starting them with \item.

@tohecz Ah, I was thinking of a group of wizards. Conclave is a common term in fantasy literature. Though Bishops do dress a lot like wizards. Of course, that is because they borrowed all of their outfits from Roman clerics.
