Q: How is it possible for these guys to survive S08E03

Torsten LinkIn the great fight in that episode we first see the Dothraki approach the army of dead. There does not seem to be even one survivor. Later we see the undead approach Winterfell, break through the wall and kill everybody on their way. One of the last scenes of the fight shows only...

06:12
@Jolenealaska Turns out you were right that this episode was actually better than the previous three. Once you set aside the sloppy writing like Euron's ambush (AGAIN), Dragons acting as if they're made of paper, and their insistence on having Dany go mad.
06:29
@Aegon I'm a bit pissed about the Starbucks cup thing.
JAD
JAD
that's the part that bothers you?
06:44
Because I spent a fair amount of energy defending the show makers in the face of a lot of pretty intense piling-on, and then saw such a bush-league error. It bugged me.
They've fixed it, BTW.
JAD
JAD
06:59
ah, that makes sense yeah
But hey Jaime killing Cersei confirmed!!!
JAD
JAD
hmm, the bait and switch
@Aegon what do you mean "confirmed"?
@Bebs Well confirmed in my head
JAD
JAD
probably a leak
07:04
@Aegon I would bet on Arya
Jaime made his decision after he heard about how Dany got pwned
That is when he decided to leave
If he were going to help Cersei, why'd he go when she was already winning?
He's going just in case that Targaryens fail
JAD
JAD
He's just going to the blonde that's winning
used to be Brienne
now it's Cersei again
See his parting dialogues
JAD
JAD
He's going full kamikaze
He enumerates everthing bad he's done....All for Cersei
And says that "I am hateful"
Never said who he hates
Gonna bet it's Cersei
JAD
JAD
07:06
Don't tell Freefolk, they're too busy mourning his character development
My theory is that Arya knows the Red Keep very well, she knows its secrets maybe better than Jaime, so she will use that knowledge to sneak and assassinate Cersei
JAD
JAD
no way she knows the Red Keep longer than Jaime
Think Arya's gonna "tragically" die now
JAD
JAD
he has been there almost all his life
she was there what? half a year?
@JAD ^ This
Think Mountain's gonna nick her little neck
JAD
JAD
07:07
but then again, she is now some badass fighter all of a sudden
And then Dog's gonna do for Mountain
JAD
JAD
So I'm sure she can use her Eagle view powers to find her way in the Red Keep
Heh
Ah yes, the standard X-ray vision kit
Issued to every facelessman
Or er.....The quitters too I suppose
JAD
JAD
of course
Be as it may, I have a strong feeling D&D are gonna kill her now
JAD
JAD
07:08
only thing she misses out on is the hoodie
That's how we get Clegane bowl
And then Jaime guts Cersei
Idk who gets Euron
@Aegon Asha maybe
BTW Dany: Since D&D are hell bent on her going insane, what do you lot think? She dies in battle? Varys kills her? Jon kills her? Or Sansa, that annoying little...., kills her?
@Bebs Oh forgot about her
@Aegon the Ironborn fleet will join
also the new Dornish prince
Prince Prince of house Prince, the rightful Prince of Dorne in the absence of any trueborn Martells.
07:12
@Aegon the Martell house seems extinguished
And intriguing that Stormlands and Reach, two of the richest and most populous Kingdoms are just sitting it out because Oh well, our Lords are dead.
@Bebs So they say. Don't be surprised if they invent a Verion Martell.
@Aegon right! I was wondering what about them
JAD
JAD
@Aegon Verion Rivers, once a bastard, now Lord of Sunspear
you know how it goes
And Dany still has the Second sons...?
JAD
JAD
they were forgotten I think
It's all about the Golden Company now
07:17
I also lost track of the Iron Bank... does Cersei still own money to them?
Another plausible way (not saying i like it, just that it wouldn't surprise me) is that jaime is somehow killed, and Arya take his face to kill Cersei
2
so both killed by arya and jaime in some way*
@JAD Maybe Daario will sail in like Knights of the Vale did at Battle of the Bastards
@Bebs no clue of what happen in whole Essos, not even Meeren
@Kepotx I hate that. So it has a higher chance of actually happening.
I dislike it too, i really hope that the valonqar prohecy would be more respected than azor ahai/princeThatWasPromised one
but that would be dramatic and subversive you know. D&D love to be dramatic and subversive
07:29
@Kepotx I do not believe that Arya is TPTWP in the show. The prophecy is NOT that TPTWP will kill the Night King. The prophecy is that (s)he will "bring the dawn".
That could very well be ushering in a kinder, gentler age.
And not have anything to do with the NK.
@Jolenealaska so, more a good monarch that would bring prosperity by a peace time rather than the hero that end the war?
never seen it like this, but could made sense
I've not seen it either, I just think it.
07:47
These last few seasons, I had the feeling that every question asked in SE has this kind of answer: "Because they became bad writers"
@Bebs Well I think not even the most ardent D&D fans would deny it. They might like the show for the pure entertainment purposes but I don't think they'll disagree that the show's writing's gone downhill rapidly
@Aegon I can't figure how is really possible, I mean they have a team of people, advisors, professional and experimented people... how can they all let this go so bad
no one said at some point, "wait, this is not good writing"...
Think the problem comes from changing the team from episode to episode
The new guys come along....They have no idea about what's going on, they get a quick 15 min briefing and start writing stuff
And apparently no one reviews their mistakes
Or maybe they just never had a good writing squad, it was GRRM who was holding it all together with reviews.
@Bebs this. best example is this question:
26
Q: How is it believable that Euron could so easily pull off this ambush?

avmohanDaenerys has Varys on her side who is some kind of master spy. She also has Bran who can scout for her easily. She was up in the sky from where she should be able to see Euron's fleet where they were hiding before she was in range of the scorpions (if the ships could shoot at her, she should be s...

just comment "it is not", get tons of upvote. The most upvoted, and sadly correct answer, is Dumb&Dumber saying "she simply forget the fleet"
not only she didn't, but that doesn't mean she turn blind
@Kepotx that would make too much stupid strategic mistakes if she simply forgot
how could people trust such a queen
old style writing would wipe here out from the show at the first mistake... now, with new style (i.e. bad) writing, characters can do mistake after mistake and they are still around
08:02
@Bebs yup, don't even understand why everyone in the boat was not killed/captured
they knew they would trap her and the fleet. put a little squad in the beach, and done
@Bebs They literally discussed the greyjoy fleet before they set off I think
also, tyrion should have sunk with a plot armor that heavy
https://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Battle_of_the_Gullet

Writers should have read this
But meh I guess they had to give Cersei some sort of an edge against The Dragons to keep things "exciting"
@Aegon writers should have read this
2
It's sad for viewers because it was the whole point of the initial show, why I enjoyed so much. No character has a plot armor and every stupid mistake is lethal
08:08
also, can't wait for episode 5 were Dany would say "ok, i still have half my boats at dragonstone"
08:20

Q: Why doesn't Dany protect her dragons better?

userIn the latest episode (S08E04) of Game of Thrones This isn't the first time this type of attack has been used. Why is Dany so clueless when it comes to these attacks? Surely given the history of them being used against her and her dragons she would show a bit of caution when approaching are...

JAD
JAD
@Bebs Not entirely true, it's just that the charaters who you think are main characters, and thus expect to have plot armour are actually not main characters at all
2
@JAD Yup. I'll eat my shoe if Jon doesn't resurrect in the books
Or if Daenerys dies
Everyone else though....
@JAD right, that was nicely said :)
there is of course a survivorship bias in lot of books, and there is always the question: "did he survive because he is a ahero, or is he a hero because he survived?"
given that Jon and Dany are closely related to the song of ice and fire, we can assume the books tell their stories, and they will survive
JAD
JAD
The hard part is keeping the feeling it creates alive after it becomes abundantly clear jon and dany are the main characters

Q: Why didn't she end the war during the meeting of hands?

ThatOneGuy789It's obvious that could have killed with the Are there any legitimate in-universe reasons why she didn't? Seems like the writers just don't care anymore to me. EDIT: I've been convinced why the war might not have ended, but not why it wasn't done anyway. Assuming which the screen...

Would it be inappropriate if I edited "Meeting of the hands" to Handshake?
08:47
@JAD Or they can just avoid making huge mistakes

Q: Why did Jaime tell Brienne that he strangled his cousin?

user116203We clearly see the Kingslayer beat his cousin to death, not strangle him. He strangled Torrhen Kastark. Does this indicate Jaime is secretly a Kastark or have the showrunners made another error in a massive list?

Q: Can resurrected bodies have rights to the iron throne?

ariveroI think to remember some discussion telling that time ago, centuries ago, the noble houses had agreed that a resurrected person has no more rights to any title of nobility. I though this was canon in the books, but now I can not find any reference so perhaps it was just speculation in the forums....

11:56
hello dear new folks
@BaeltheBard Probably some Youtube "expert" explored that scenario
@Aegon What do you mean? This rule exists! it's the rule n°4859 Alinea #12, between "Space exploration regulation law amendment made by Argillac" and "My wife was turned into a spoon, can I still marry her?" issue
@Kepotx 😂
to be honest, space exploration is as realistic/plausible than resurrection. Just fix the imp to the nuclear-propelled bolt thrown by Qyburn ballistae, and you're done
12:14
You don't need nuclear bolts for that
Euron Greyjoy will simply take the iron fleet there if Cersei asked
Space exploration with in style
of course, I'm dumb. Mare Tranquillitatis is still a sea after all
JAD

12:47
I'm surprised we didn't get a question yet about why Daenerys drinks Starbucks
there was one
@BaeltheBard deleted however
people are making too much of a deal about this coffee cup

Q: Why did Missandei said that?

J MIn Game of Thrones S8 E04, "The last of the Starks", cersei kills Missandei, before killing she asks if Missandei has any last words, and Missandei replies Dracarys! Why did she said that, but nothing else?

Q: Why didn't Varys know about the defences of King Landing?

Pierre44In S8E4: When during the whole show, Varys has "Little Birds" informing him about everything, how could he miss that King's Landing (or their ships) had so many scorpions to defend the city against dragons?

13:06
House Mormont is completely dead or they still have some cousins, heirs?
hasn't Lyanna some sisters?
Of mentioned members all dead I think
on the books, family tree is bigger
I should check Baratheon/Targ family tree to edit my answer about gendry by the way

Q: Does Bran still consider himself part of the Stark family?

LlewellynBran has said at least once that he's "not Brandon Stark anymore". Yet, in the Game of Thrones episode "The Last of the Starks" (S08E04), when the Stark children meet in the Godswood to discuss family matters there's no question at all that he should be there. Clearly, the others still consider ...

Q: Biggest dragon in Song of Ice and Fire

AleOtero93I searched in some sites but couldn't find an official (or canon) answer, don't know if there is one actually. Q: How did Daenerys' army survive that much?

Pierre44In S8E4: we hear that half of the army died fighting the White Walkers. However, in S8E3, we could barely count 15 people still fighting. Did the bulk of the army keep fighting somewhere else or how did so many (thousands?) survive?

@TheLethalCarrot iirc she even said she is the last of the line in the last season
btw what's the 'rules' on spoilers, in this chatroom?
> General discussion of "A Song of Ice and Fire", (and that TV show thingy) including all SPOILERS.
i didn't see that :D
sO HOW COME BOATS ARE SO DAMN FAST NOW
Also, accidental shouting
I feel like this last episode especially, is so rushed D:
Series 7, Dany's going to winterfell... takes at LEAST one episode
hell, it took an entire gap between seasons ;D
now? get on a boat, arrive at kings landing 5 seconds later.
fact it took 2 days to get to whiteharbour? pffft
oh gawd
You'll feel right at home here, I'd wager. ;-)
why do i think in the remaining book(s?) that the Eyrie will be important 'You can't attack here without coming up the mountains first' -- Dead woman.

Deny hands Jon Snow her caffeinated beverage.

Q: Purpose of generals of Night King

nipponWhat is a reason the Night King would create his generals (I don't know a better name for the icy guys that are not wights). If they are killed, the wights they created are also killed. Q: Did anyone else know about Cersei being pregnant?

Skywalker89In s08e04 when Daenarys meets with Cersei, and Tyrion says aloud that Cersei is pregnant, did anyone else other than Jamie, Tyrion, Euron and Qyburn (Cersei's Hand) know about it? @Bebs see every failed corporate product launch, where its obvious its a disaster from Day 1...
I suspect HBO execs were just too cowardly at this point to command Benioff/Weiss to at least listen to the fans and turn the story around
just go on the GoT subreddit and you have dozens of great ideas for how to finish after the books have run out
but nope, we let the maestros run the show no matter what... who cares if they turn the TV show from one of the greatest shows in the history of television into one of the greatest disasters in history...

Then again, for every "awesome" fan theory that would make for a supposedly better story, you got the same amount of Redditors screeming "Are you crazy, that's totally wrong!". That's just how the internet works.
Appealing to fan theories isn’t necessarily a good thing
2
Indeed.
GRRM himself has alluded to the problems this poses.
