@jtbandes my (fairly limited) experience with Mountain Lion restoration and reuse of backups is that the defaults are user-friendly for a use case such as yours. Good luck!
@jtbandes after backup begins you can use Finder (without Time Machine browser) to browse Backups.backupdband check that previous data is being reused.
@jtbandes if 105.46 GB is more than you expect, it's probably because: for this one backup the estimate is a simple (quick) sum of the content of all folders to be backed up, without attention to whether files differ.
As retina displays are becoming more pervasive in Apple hardware, and we're here to support users of Apple products, I think it would be great if the AD site included retina versions of its image resources, such as the header image, voting buttons, and user profile photos.

For users with the new MacBook Pro with retina display, screenshots have their dimensions doubled. For example, if I take a screenshot of a window, this is what I get:
As you can see, when the image is displayed normally, it's too big.
The correct way to display these is to use

I'm running Mountain Lion on a mid 2011 MacBook Air.
I'd love to be able to set type in the oldest Macintosh font, Chicago. Is this font included anywhere in OS X Mountain Lion? If not, what is the most recent Macintosh operating system to include the font, and can the font be purchased anywhere?
I also vaguely recall that either Chicago or Charcoal (I don't remember which) exists for the Latin character renderings of some other character fonts back a few OS versions ago.
But I'm hoping some font <del>geek</del> expert can point me in the right direction.
But along with cool special effects comes fun (sort of) challenges!
Photoshop is going to be a vital tool for this one
There's a really challenging part in which he crosses the lightsaber in front of him. I'm gonna have to take each of those frames into Photoshop to get the saber to pass in front of him, and not behind...
@DanielLawson Pretty much, except usually not in Photoshop. Special instances, like my case, require something like Photoshop. Studios may have another way of putting in a lightsaber programmatically, but it would require a lot of extra equipment.
The basic idea is that you go frame by frame in the video and move the lightsaber.
A lightsaber is a fictional weapon in the Star Wars universe, a "laser sword." It consists of a polished metal hilt which projects a blade of Plasma about 1.33 meters (1.45 yards) long. The lightsaber is the signature weapon of the Jedi order and their Sith counterparts, both of whom can use them for close combat, or to deflect blaster bolts. Its distinct appearance was created using rotoscoping for the original Star Wars films, and digitally for the prequel trilogy. The lightsaber first appeared in the original Star Wars film (1977) and every Star Wars movie to date (except The Star Wars...
The original crew actually made the lightsaber...
So maybe they don't do that now...
I don't know.
> The technique used to create the lightsaber effect consists of filming actors sparring with props composed of handles that have rods attached to them. Using a process called rotoscoping, the film is processed frame by frame by drawing the outline of each lightsaber blade onto an animation cel and painting the correct color for the blade.
> Each animation cel is placed over a black background and filmed with a diffuser over the lens to get the glow around the edges of the lightsabers. The actual footage from the movie is double-exposed onto this same film to obtain the final result. A similar technique is used with video recorders, but the frames of the digitized images are manipulated and merged using graphics computer programs
@GrahamPerrin It seems to have worked alright; when I enter the Time Machine UI, I can go back through my old backups. I did have a lot of photos added since the last backup, so that's probably where a large part of the size came from (that and having installed Mountain Lion)
Example: with the Option key and the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, Browse Other Backup Disks… may present a dialogue without volumes that are expected by the user.
@jtbandes Rewind a few hours. How about, "What techniques for disk, volume and file system management are possible with OS X but troublesome within Disk Utility?"
@jtbandes How about that (above) for a title, then in the body of the question I can at least (a) make explicit that this particular question does not seek design suggestions; and (b) refer to chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/5549782#5549782

I'd like answers to form something like:
a shortlist of things that appear illogical or impossible in Disk Utility.
I'll seed at least one answer to exemplify what I have in mind.
For some of the things mentioned, there will be answers elsewhere in Stack Exchange – so here, ...
@balpha on the subject of issues affecting multiple stacks: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/1037347#1037347 – affects Ask Different and some other (not all) stacks. On one hand, it's an apparently minor issue – maybe nothing more than formatting. On the other hand, it does affect FAQ, which is high visibility content.
No, that's probably a good idea. I don't have an immediate solution for this (it has to do with the fact that moderators can edit parts of the faq). Probably best to have it on Meta, since it's not a huge issue that would require attention ASAP
Completely off-topic, my previously lovely Rich Tea biscuits have absorbed the odour of really poor chocolate from sharing a tin with my housemate's chocolate digestives from Tesco. Mouth-twisting, in the way that Princess Margaret's mouth might have twisted on seeing Elizabeth Taylor's ring.
A minor issue.

Is is possible to set up a reverse SSH tunnel on an iPad? I'd like to be to do basic nmap TCP scans and use some other tools that the iPad doesn't have on remote networks. So my idea is after I've connected to the network, ssh to my home server. Then from my home server ssh back onto my iPad. ...

@JasonSalaz True...
I still am not sure that it would work. Take a look at the lightsaber image:
You see how there is a white center with glowing green edges? I fail to see how that could be accomplished with a green screen. If you have any ideas, please! I'm all ears!!
@daviesgeek If you can get a version of the lightsaber image with the right opacity data you can make keyframes along the path you want it to travel and have it follow them. Since it's going behind him you'll have to use some form of selection to mask off that area of the image. After Effects has some good tools to automate this.
@NathanGreenstein Yeah, that's how I'm doing it, 'cept I'm using Photoshop for masking....probably not the best way, but it's the most precise way I know of.
@daviesgeek Right, and After Effects (and probably Final Cut) have tools to help you do the selection. So you can give it some help (maybe do one selection by hand per keyframe, e.g.) and it will do things automatically from there.
Just really reduces the number of frames you have to do by hand
@stuffe It took me embarrassingly long to figure out how to get back and forth between Metro and the normal UI :D
But I actually rather like the Metro apps.
Nice use of gigantic background images in, e.g. the Weather app.
