That's what I've been waiting for!

I'm feeling really left out with all these Mountain Lion questions/answers. :-(

eh?
alone again :(

@daviesgeek That's the main reason I upgraded :-(

6:30 AM
@manix Yes, alone again...
However, I did just answer a ML question:
0
A: What steps should I take in preparation for upgrading Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion?

daviesgeekAccording to The Tech Scoop and Lifehacker, there are a number of things you should do before upgrading. Make sure your computer will actually run Mountain Lion. Here is a list of all the Macs that will not support Mountain Lion. Run Software Update. Go to the Apple menu > Software Update and m...

@DanielLawson Dad said no upgrading, especially since we just upgraded to Lion not that long ago.

Did you know that cat names are common among German tanks?
Panther is the common name of a medium tank fielded by Nazi Germany in World War II that served from mid-1943 to the end of the European war in 1945. It was intended as a counter to the T-34, and to replace the Panzer III and Panzer IV; while never replacing the latter, it served alongside it as well as the heavier Tiger tanks until the end of the war. The Panther's excellent combination of firepower, mobility, and protection served as a benchmark for other nations' late war and immediate post-war tank designs, and it is frequently regarded as one of the best tank designs of World War II....
Tiger II is the common name of a German heavy tank of the Second World War. The final official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B, often shortened to Tiger B. The ordnance inventory designation was Sd.Kfz. 182. The design followed the same concept as the Tiger I, but was intended to be even more formidable. The Tiger II combined the thick armor of the Tiger I with the sloped armor used on the Panther medium tank. The tank weighed almost seventy metric tons, was protected by of armor to the front, The chassis was also the basis for the Jagdtiger turretless tank destr...
The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei in the early 1970s for the West German Army. The tank first entered service in 1979 and succeeded the earlier Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German Army. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and twelve other European countries, as well as several non-European nations. More than 3,480 Leopard 2s have been manufactured. The Leopard 2 first saw combat in Kosovo with the German Army and has also seen action in Afghanistan with the Danish and Canadian contributions to the International Security As...
I haven't found any references for (Mountain) Lion tough...

10:13 AM
I did actually, although the link hadn't crossed my mind.

10:41 AM
The Mail notification does not work for me. I don't get a notification and I don't see them in the notification center.

You may have set Mail only to notify for VIPs
Default is "inbox only", so if you have rules that move mails on arrival, they may not notify
guesswork

I have set mail to notify for everything!

Checked notification in sys prefs?

Yes.

First thing I did was remove the twitter thing from there, would be so much better to have that as a widget, wren-like
widgets are great, sadly overlooked.

10:48 AM
I could swear that the notifications worked yesterday. But not today.

A good widget could look and feel like a mini iOS app
I'm surprised that they didn't copy some of the iOS things over as widgets rather than apps.

I prefer certain implementations as apps. Notes for example.

Calculator and Weather widgets would be much better if they just compiled the iOS versions for Mac
for sure, stuff you might actually work on, but calculator and other quick hit apps would add to the feeling of cohesive ecosystem

@stuffe Speaking of: I did not know that the Calculator.app still exists. I haven't been using this one for ages.

Ignore the dashboard and existing widgets, if Apple came out tomorrow and said that 10.8.1 would include a special full screen area where you could run modified iphone apps, people would go mental
and really, that's all the dashboard is.
Especially as all the interactive stuff in iBooks are just widgets also.
and they have all the new tools for creating them. They could really make them useful again, simply by adding some iOS sheen and design cohesion.

10:51 AM
@stuffe Do you think my problem with Mail notifications is worth a question? Or should I avoid it as this might be a bug which will be fixed soon in 10.8.1?

If you have checked Mail Prefs, checked Notifications sys prefs, are sure that you haven;t muted all notifications (have you got a way to trigger them at will? You can click enable desktop notification to the right here for one) then I say ask
@danstuffe test

@stuffe I've triggered them at will by requiring a password reset from readability multiple times.

If you enable it in this window to the right, you get them when you are @gentmatt tagged

Yes. With a nice chrome icon.
But I only see the pop-up. The message doesn't show in the side bar.

Mine too, but the default for Safari is alert style, so I clicked it, and it goes away and doesn;t stay in NC

10:58 AM
This probably isn't expected, eh?

No, I think it's very inconsistent actually, I would expect it to show it anyway.
Ping my name a few times please (self-pinging doesn't work)
@gentmatt 1
@gentmatt 2
@gentmatt 3

Interesting, the don't stack up. The newer notification covers the old one.
@stuffe XXX
@stuffe XXXX
@stuffe XXXXX
@stuffe Lol.
@stuffe yolo.

Oooooook!
So, I opened the notification tray when those came in.
And they all appears as banner notifications, and they all appeared in the tray, and about 5 seconds after each banner went away (I ignored them all) they subsequently drifted out of teh tray also, without me touching them
So they arrived, stayed 5 or so seconds longer than the banner, and then go.

Interesting...
Ok, I gotta run. Lunch! Ttyl.

I have changed them from banners to alerts, if you can send 5 more?
oh, OK. later :)

11:11 AM
@stuffe I'm back. Do you want me to send them now?

ok
@gentmatt OK

@stuffe 001
@stuffe 0010
@stuffe 0011
@stuffe 0100

Jmm, even worse.

What happens?

So, same deal, they showed as alerts, and showed in the tray.
But I had set them to alert style, that should force me to act on them
I didn't, and as each alert went away on it's own 9they should have stayed), the tray copy also dissapeared.
I didn't acknowledge any of them, and they are all gone, and I have none in the tray left either.

11:20 AM
Yeah. Ok, I'm going to work on a question now. I want to reset or reinitialize the NC and avoid a whole re-install of 10.8

In terms of preference, I had selected Safar to use alerts. It describes an alert as "stay on screen until dismissed"
And I have show 5 recent items in NC ticked, and it saves none.
Mail works tho...

Oh wait...
@stuffe Can you notify me in Chrome please?

Yup,
@gentmatt 1
@gentmatt B
@gentmatt 11

One more please

@gentmatt May the skin of your bottom never cover a banjo.

11:29 AM
Ok, it seems to work now. In Mail the problem was that the E-Mail was marked as junk. How could I not have noticed that before?
In Chrome, Banners work fine.

Doh!

But only one notification shows up in the sidebar!

Hmmm... walked away during mountain lion download, apparently have to start the whole thing over again

Alerts work fine, too.

That doesn't seem like a good design :-/

11:31 AM
@stuffe And now the Chrome notification in the sidebar has disappeared as well... without me clicking on it. But it was definitely longer than 5s.

Gah, nothing is actually staying in the Centre apart from mail notifications!

I wonder if the Internet connection dropped, maybe OS X rMBP does wifi power saving?

Trollolololo. I'll dismiss the question and wait for 10.8.1.

Yup, I can't wait for this anyway

@KyleBrandt Probably something like that. Maybe pausing downloads in the App Store only works when the App Store initiates it.

11:35 AM
Every download manager I have ever used sucks, I wish I could just use a browser or wget for everything

@stuffe I've actually expected for Growl to support the NC by now. But that's not the case... Now I have two layouts for notifications.
@KyleBrandt Except for flashgot for Firefox. <3

I got 2 dissapearing alerts for that, one for the message, one for the edit ;)

I imagine their are download managers that are written just to be that and they are fine. But when a company makes their own for their stuff (i.e. Microsoft iso downloads, App store apparently) it tends to suck

This comes close...
@KyleBrandt An this maybe fine in western country. But when I lived in South Africa, the internet connections were very unreliable. That's why I needed to use torrents only for downloading big files.

12:00 PM
@gentmatt this is really bugging me, I'm close to asking a question myself, so you've an hour if you want to beat me to it ;)

@stuffe Go ahead! Ask the question. I don't mind.

Q: Notification Centre in Mountain Lion nto working as expected

stuffeI'm trying to understand how to get Notifications working properly in Mountain Lion. I understand all the concepts about how to enable them, and configure them etc, but it doesn't seem to work as advertised. I'll use Safari as my example here: I have the following preferences set in both Syste...

Upgrade to ML complete

1:10 PM
In some ways Mountain Lion feels like how Lion should have been from the beginning. More user control in certain settings, smooth animations.

I haven't been using mac long enough to even notice
If someone had upgraded in my sleep I wouldn't have known :-P

Does anyone else here have problems with chat.SE enable desktop notification in Safari 6 on 10.8?

1:41 PM
Yes
See my question about 6 up

2:07 PM
@stuffe Don't mess with calculator.app !!!

I just think that the dashboard calculator app, should look the same, heck even be pretty much the same as the iOS equivelent.

Oh, dashboard, not the main one. OK, carry on.

@nathangreenstein Can we unfreeze the Blog chat room
I posted a draft entry, but please don't approve it yet, because it's over the 250-750 promotion word limit, and if I absolutely have to edit it down I will, but I like it how it is

Given that Nathan isn't logged in and I am, mightn't I be a better person to ask?

@DanielLawson But yes, the main one too. We have 3 calculator apps provided by Apple. Stupid
@DanielLawson Er, yeah ;)

2:11 PM
Sorry, rethinking that. I see it wasn't frozen by time out – Nathan froze it on purpose. Perhaps we should ask him if he wants it open. Sounds like a good idea
I just pinged him in the mod chat room. Rooms freeze by default, and then any chat admin can reopen them, but this one Nathan closed on purpose, so I'll leave this call to him.
@stuffe can you ping me? I'm testing this Desktop Notification thing.

@DanielLawson Sure

Thanks!

@DanielLawson 1
@DanielLawson 2

Hey, nothing in Notification Center/Centre

@DanielLawson 3
Have you enabled it over >>> there?

2:19 PM
That should mean it's enabled, yes?
Stuffe, on UK Macs, is it called Notification Centre?

Yeah, that loooks good
Center
But re/er is one of my "will never stop doing that" spelling errors
Do you get the notification? I get it, and it appears in the tray (as I am calling it), but they just don't stay, they go away, even if they are alert style and I don't click them

Well, it's not an error on your part; it's a difference in spelling between our two languages. I just wondered if it were localized.

You can open the tray and watch them come in and out to prove it

I don't get any alert at all.
Can you try once more?
Wait, we're supposed to use sandbox for this.
I can't get Notification Center to work with Safari either, but my result is different than @stuffe 's. I get no notifications at all.

@gentmatt couldn;t get mail ones to work, think he tracked it down to them being labelled junk tho

2:35 PM
Only 81 rep to go!

Lots of review in the German App Store of Mountain Lion complain about the lack of AirPlay Mirroring support. The top review complains about having a merely 2 year old +3000€ MB Pro device which is not able to get this feature via Apple, but via third party software.
Oh well. I think Apple could avoid lot's of complaints like this if they just made their decision making more transparent. That's all.

2:53 PM
Good Morning all - did anyone skip upgrading at least one machine yesterday?

3:13 PM
Morning. Nope, I'm all upgraded. I do have access to a 10.6 machine if that's useful :)

@bmike I have bootable 10.7 clones, I did one, decided it seemed good, did the other.

3:31 PM
Yay, Twitters dead
It's coming to something when Twitter dies and you reboot your router rather than assume it's just 1 site that's gone...

@stuffe Nice
@DanielLawson - Re the notification center...

Q: Hide notification center button in Mountain Lion

penguinrobIn Mountain Lion, is there a way to hide the button in the status bar that opens notification center? The only advantage (for me) over the gesture is that option-clicking the button enables/disables showing alerts and banners (toggles the switch in the notifications center).

I keep getting this error no matter what name I change the file...
Did you delete it from terminal or some other trick?

@bmike AKA how to upgrade Mountain Lion to Lion ;)

3:58 PM
stuffe on July 26, 2012

In my last blog post, I described my intent to run the Developer Preview of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion until such time as it was officially released without resorting to installing any third party software. It was in part an exercise in minimal computing and attempting to restrain myself from the temptations of installing (and indeed often being required to purchase) the latest and greatest apps and utilities, and in part an attempt to see if you could really just pick up and use a computer with just the built in software and still get by. …

Oh, and when I say 750 characters, I mean WORDS! — stuffe 7 mins ago
:)
Wow. Twitter has been down for more than an hour already...

@bmike No, I just used Finder. I renamed it in the Get Info box.

@gentmatt yea, and down hard too.

@gentmatt Yeah, oops ;)

Here's the warning message I got:
Did you give yourself write permission on the file?
@stuffe when I was in grad school, I used to get very annoyed with the British and Canadians because I was in Labo(u)r economics, and I had to do two searches to find journal articles in my field, whereas other fields only needed one spelling.

5:21 PM
Finally hit 8K!!

@DanielLawson Yes - and I'm not talking about changing the name
I'm talking about moving it to trash.

Oh. I renamed it.
Seemed less drastic.

This promotion will likely push me over 10k, especially as I am off work for 3 weeks...

Voluntarily, I hope… but I forget people in civilized countries actually get vacation time as a norm, unlike many jobs here in the US

bit of both

6:13 PM
@stuffe Lucky! I'm pretty far behind now...

Yeah, I'm also going on vacation for 10 days.
Starting next week! Japan, here I come :)

Looks like @gentmatt wins ALL THE TOYS again :)

Well, we'll still see if the contest removes wiki posts. Which it should do and would be fair.
Totally unrelated to the contest, I've managed to get 200+ rep again.

That WIKI stormed off, and has sunk since. I've put a good one in, and nothing. Mind you, I like the format, every chance is equal.

1 hour later…

Got my Peer Pressure Badge :)

nice work
@gentmatt Please hold your ground against Jeff...

This, like the name/domain drama, is one of those things that I feel incredibly strongly about.

Better answer, but still not in the CW club
@JasonSalaz Yeah, tbh, whilst terrible for most questions, for new product events, the CWs are actually a very nice resource

@JasonSalaz Thanks for the support. I totally understand all criticism. On the other hand the demand for such questions is quite enormous. (demand meaning, people like to contribute and search these question)

7:41 PM
It's like I said the other day, these questions work under two scenarios:

I often find cool stuff the reviews missed. Of course, I often see a hundred things I had read in reviews also, but not everyone wants to read a review, they want to see a peer-voted list of cool stuff, knowing the best should float to the top and they can stop reading when they get bored knwoing they have seen the best ones

1. When there's a Champion to really wrangle it all in.
2. When you're not stack overflow sized.
I fully admit that there may come a day when I change my opinions due to the change in details. But I think it's more relevant to make choices based off my feelings for the site. Instead of finding a problem that only SO has and inflicting it on the rest of the network.
also, sites.stackexchange.com doesn't work?

@stuffe Yes. That's it.

sgelkjalrwkjgarlkewjglakreg

@JasonSalaz Nope.

7:43 PM
Gosh *.stackexchange.com gets on my nerves.

@JasonSalaz Yes. I'd like Wiki questions like this to be on the site, but also seperate. No reps, no badges. Purely communal.

You know, when the bulk of the top all time posters not only think it's OK, but actively participate in CW, then I think it's fine to say stfu, this is how we roll :)
5
@gentmatt Exactly, it's CW for a reason

8:03 PM
@stuffe Agreed 100%. Especially given that nearly all of the people against it don't participate here actively, if at all.
CW lists don't always work, to be sure, but I think we've found a formula that works well for us with the undocumented features questions.

@NathanGreenstein I had a look at the complainers reps. Apart from Jeff, no-one had any rep to write home about on more than 1 site, meaning that they see things only from the POV of their one site. One only joined 4 days ago. The question is a good one. If I knew how to search for CWs, and could work out the percentage of how many we have, I'd love to.

@stuffe If you're handy with SQL you could make a query on data.stackexchange.com to get the percentage.

Yeah, I'm not ;)

Wait, I forgot about the search option. Search for wiki:1.
1551/57735 = 2.7%

that's higher than I expected actualy

8:13 PM
that's all CWs though
and there are many more from a time when any user could specify that they wanted their question to be one
p.s. there are only 78 open CWs

Wait, weirdness. Searching for wiki:1 closed:0 only has 78 questions, 0.1%

can you limit the search to within the last year?
Aha!

But the weird part: wiki:1 closed:1 only has 11...

indeed

So, I'm confused :/
11 + 78 ≠ 1551

8:16 PM
yay hidden search criteria

Well, assuming the 0.1% figure is right, that's even lower than I expected. I was thinking it would be maybe 0.5% to 1%.

by the way, where did you get the 57735 number from?

I think that works?

/sites says 18K questions.

Let's go with that then.
78/18000 = 0.4%
facepalm
the ID is questions and answers

8:22 PM
shouldn't we do 1551/18000? (.08% btw)

@JasonSalaz No idea :/ 78 seems like it should be right (wiki yes, closed no) but it looks like it may be excluding something we don't know about.

even if we use the full possibility of 1551, it's such an insignificant number
especially considering how many of them are active.

@JasonSalaz I'd be fine with culling a lot of the CW that are voted less than 10 after we posted a few to meta and announced we were going to cull CW that didn't have love from votes, etc....

Oooooh, irony.
Jeff answered a CW and even badged for it.

A: Please share your hidden Mac OS X features or tips and tricks

Jeff AtwoodI still think ⌘ + ⌥ + ⇧ + v (paste without style) is very handy. That is, when something is on the clipboard and has unwanted styles along for the ride, this keyboard shortcuts lets you paste just the plain text without any formatting.

what was the last CW we've had since iOS 5's release?
(I mean before the ML CW, of course.)

@JasonSalaz probably the lion restore one post the ipad3 contest

8:38 PM
Lion Restore?

yeah, we tried (well, I, and true to form for the less good CWs) to build a lion restore/install one, every conceivable method all in 1 question.

I don't recall seeing this.
Ok, so, the answer is 1, good answer.
How many between Lion CW, and iOS 5 CW?
I don't intend to do this for every release, I just... CWs are not a problem -_-

Think that CW is ruined already. Lots of down voting, very unusual, esp for a CW where is doesn't even matter.
:/

2 hours later…
10:31 PM
@JasonSalaz That's pretty good.

10:45 PM
@NathanGreenstein Wow! Really weird. I get the same number!

@stuffe I'm not surprised at the down voting since the question was on the site-wide hot question list and quite frankly - many people seem to have a beef with this site and are not shy about criticizing something without participating.

If I buy something like this USB server, can I print from an iOS device to it? (AirPrint)

11:05 PM
@daviesgeek No. You'll want something like the lantronix print server (or it's more expensive / capable workgroup version).
It's not released yet (or just released) so you'll need to wait or get one from the manufacturer if you need one soon.
Now the two devices might work well to avoid having a computer share your USB printers so that the Lantronix device can then re-share them downstream to iOS devices.
Hey @DanielBeck - Congratulations on your election as a moderator. You'd have had my vote if I remembered to cast one... (it's been a busy few weeks for me)

@bmike Thanks!

I voted! Yay!

11:51 PM
I never realized how weird and complex OS X's behavior when shift-clicking items in a list is until I had to implement it myself.
For those interested, here's the insanity:
I was very, very confused until I realized that shift-clicks don't update what the system considers to be the 'last clicked item'. No idea why things work like that :/
