@NimeshNeema While I would agree is most scenarios. With this specific example and many others I feel the user is not even making an attempt. No sane person can possibly think that the users of AskDifferent are telepathic and can figure out what the question is without them even saying the question.
If they posted the wall with some basis of a question
took time to read help center
even formatted the log
I would agree. But I saw no attempt to write an actual question.
@JBis I used to think along similar lines. But with time I have learned that not all people are as technically blessed as you and me. For many folks, even taking the effort of creating an account on the site and posting their query is not a small feat. Simply down voting may end up giving them a very strange signal.
In my opinion it''s best to give OP a chance to understand what went wrong
Then if the person is seriously seeking a resolution he/she will actively work with you to clearly state their intentions and will be active in adhering to site conventions.
Sharing the link to the original question here, which lead to this discussion, for context: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/332555/…
In short, simply down voting helps in no way.
@NimeshNeema I have also found these types of posters also seem to be the people that are very rude to people that are trying to help.
But I do understand your POV.
@NimeshNeema Basically down voting a new user isn't very helpful (they can't get lower than one rep point anyway). Add a comment asking what you would ask anybody dumping the log file at you in real life, maybe vote to close, and move on.
@nohillside Upvote.
If the asker is interested in a solution they will improve the post and/or add at least some comments. If they ain't they won't come back anyway.

@JBis That's something which you discover at later point. (I mean you can never know from the post if a person is rude). On the contrary, I have found majority to be very co-operative and supportive of the shared instructions.
@NimeshNeema I guess we will see what happens with this OP.
Thanks for the suggestions!
And don't forget: AD (and SE as a whole) is "hard" to understand at first for users coming from the usual forum-style sites. Let's help them get used to how things work :-)
@nohillside I'd second this.
@nohillside While true. No form site is copy and paste logs with no question and pray.
I'd like to take this opportunity to write that even though I am pretty new to this site (started using it barely 5 months ago), I have found all of the experienced folks on this site to be VERY supportive and encouraging. The collective enthusiasm is what keeps a platform going and growing.
18:00
@NimeshNeema I'd second this. :)
Even some of the new users are pretty knowledgeable and have good stuff to share. All these are the reasons that keeps me coming to the site everyday. (I have AD open on my second monitor all the time :D)
@JBis Copy pasta from my previous comment! :P
@NimeshNeema All old users were once new
On a funny note, In India, we had a long running TV soap named along similar lines as your comment :P

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyunki_Saas_Bhi_Kabhi_Bahu_Thi (English: Because a mother-in-law was once a daughter-in-law, too)
That monstrosity ended after approx. 2000 episodes!
18:19
@NimeshNeema 2000 episodes. Wow. Took a while to become mother-in-law I guess :)

hey guys. quick possibly dumb question. Using erase all content and settings on an ipad doesn't erase the OS or basic settings, right?
grg
grg
@AdamTheChespin The OS isn't erased. All settings are erased though, which settings were you thinking of?
@grg just basic ones.
@AdamTheChespin No, it doesn't erase the OS. However, while I'm not sure what you mean by basic settings, if you do pick the Erase all Content and Settings option then you'll basically end up with a factory default state (for whatever iOS is currently installed). None of your user settings will remain. However, unless you've also signed out of iCloud etc, then the device will still be associated with the same Apple ID.

@AdamTheChespin Please explain more!
I had to get mine repaired and apple in Carlisle sent me a replacement and I'm in the process of restoring it. thing is, my most recent backup was done with iOS 12 beta.
so I'm installing the beta and then running the backup.
and the replacement came with 11.3
just trying to make sure I'm doing it right cause this particular situation is new to me.

@AdamTheChespin That all sounds reasonable, I don't see any issues with that
AWESOME! macOS Mojave allows you to charge your iPhone through usb even when the lid is closed!
so for backups, it only means the base version of the OS and not point releases right, @grg?
grg
grg
@JBis I've been doing this regularly since 2012, not sure what's changed? :)
@grg Really? I have always had issue doing it. It would stop charging after 5 min (due to it sleeping) even if I gave it some coffee.
grg
grg
@AdamTheChespin I believed it was a strict version check down to the OS build within the same minor release version, such that those who made a backup of a phone with a custom iOS build (e.g. I believe iPhone 5 on release) couldn't restore to another phone without that build, but it may have changed since then
22:48
@grg the version the restore screen said was iOS 12.0 Required
@AdamTheChespin if your restore required iOS 12 then you need to setup iPhone as new and skip all the Apple ID crap, update to iOS 12. Then erase all content and settings.
Could be wrong but pretty sure
grg
grg
@JBis Is it a laptop and connected to power? That'd have been the case for me
which is what I'm doing.
grg
grg
@AdamTheChespin Makes sense, there's no 12.0.x release yet
@grg ok, cool. :) :D
22:50
@grg No. laptop wasn't connected to power
grg
grg
@JBis Ah interesting change then, thanks for sharing!
@grg helpful when you get on a train with 15% on iOS 12 beta (so battery going quicker)
Question: does anyone think that Apple will continue to release macOS server security updates for macOS Sierra?
want to stick with Sierra but scared of security issues
turns out you guys were right. it's restoring. :)
@AdamTheChespin Yippy!
wags tail
23:03
@JBis When you say continue, for how long? Apple will continue to do this if the security update is such that it warrants it. My guess is that Apple will continue to issue security updates until July 2019, but that may depend on the content of the update. If it's serious enough, then even if it's beyond July 2019 it'd still apply. But this is purely an opinion on my behalf.
@Monomeeth Well here's my thinking. Im using it mostly for file sharing and web server. Web server is powered by Apache so I can prob just manually install updates for that. I prob use it for next couple of years. At least 1 maybe 2. I like my configuration. And it's perfect for my MBP 2011.
(1 to 2 years)
@JBis Haha, yeah, I know what it's like when you have a configuration you don't wanna mess with! :) Well, my guess is that you should be right for another year. Beyond that is more iffy.
is anyone else seeing an erroneous update badge on the settings app in iOS 12 build 16A5339e?
aka public beta 4
just me? ok
23:27
@Monomeeth thz
Thx
feel free to ignore my question if you want...
