@NimeshNeema While I would agree is most scenarios. With this specific example and many others I feel the user is not even making an attempt. No sane person can possibly think that the users of AskDifferent are telepathic and can figure out what the question is without them even saying the question.

@JBis I used to think along similar lines. But with time I have learned that not all people are as technically blessed as you and me. For many folks, even taking the effort of creating an account on the site and posting their query is not a small feat. Simply down voting may end up giving them a very strange signal.

Then if the person is seriously seeking a resolution he/she will actively work with you to clearly state their intentions and will be active in adhering to site conventions.
@NimeshNeema Basically down voting a new user isn't very helpful (they can't get lower than one rep point anyway). Add a comment asking what you would ask anybody dumping the log file at you in real life, maybe vote to close, and move on.
@JBis That's something which you discover at later point. (I mean you can never know from the post if a person is rude). On the contrary, I have found majority to be very co-operative and supportive of the shared instructions.
And don't forget: AD (and SE as a whole) is "hard" to understand at first for users coming from the usual forum-style sites. Let's help them get used to how things work :-)
I'd like to take this opportunity to write that even though I am pretty new to this site (started using it barely 5 months ago), I have found all of the experienced folks on this site to be VERY supportive and encouraging. The collective enthusiasm is what keeps a platform going and growing.
Even some of the new users are pretty knowledgeable and have good stuff to share. All these are the reasons that keeps me coming to the site everyday. (I have AD open on my second monitor all the time :D)
@AdamTheChespin No, it doesn't erase the OS. However, while I'm not sure what you mean by basic settings, if you do pick the Erase all Content and Settings option then you'll basically end up with a factory default state (for whatever iOS is currently installed). None of your user settings will remain. However, unless you've also signed out of iCloud etc, then the device will still be associated with the same Apple ID.
I had to get mine repaired and apple in Carlisle sent me a replacement and I'm in the process of restoring it. thing is, my most recent backup was done with iOS 12 beta.
so I'm installing the beta and then running the backup.
and the replacement came with 11.3
just trying to make sure I'm doing it right cause this particular situation is new to me.
@AdamTheChespin I believed it was a strict version check down to the OS build within the same minor release version, such that those who made a backup of a phone with a custom iOS build (e.g. I believe iPhone 5 on release) couldn't restore to another phone without that build, but it may have changed since then
@AdamTheChespin if your restore required iOS 12 then you need to setup iPhone as new and skip all the Apple ID crap, update to iOS 12. Then erase all content and settings.
@JBis When you say continue, for how long? Apple will continue to do this if the security update is such that it warrants it. My guess is that Apple will continue to issue security updates until July 2019, but that may depend on the content of the update. If it's serious enough, then even if it's beyond July 2019 it'd still apply. But this is purely an opinion on my behalf.
@Monomeeth Well here's my thinking. Im using it mostly for file sharing and web server. Web server is powered by Apache so I can prob just manually install updates for that. I prob use it for next couple of years. At least 1 maybe 2. I like my configuration. And it's perfect for my MBP 2011.
@JBis Haha, yeah, I know what it's like when you have a configuration you don't wanna mess with! :) Well, my guess is that you should be right for another year. Beyond that is more iffy.
