12:00 AM
@stuffe good night!

@JasonSalaz Is that you doing the starring?

Indeed it is not.
I have not star'ed since stuffe's initial magpie reference.

Ok...just wonderin'
I still don't get it...

@JasonSalaz and the outspoken badge was what I meant for "king of stars" apple.stackexchange.com/badges/65/outspoken
(but it appears I am in that club too...)

Oh, now I get the magpies....

12:02 AM
@JasonSalaz haha
I thought about it more and still don't get some of the references....
I thought I understood the magpies reference.
Maybe I do get it...I'm confused about the whole thing which may mean I don't understand it.
Anyhow, I'm going to stop talking about it because I don't know what I'm talking about.

@KyleCronin Was it you who showed us some kind of scheduling/calendar web-app? Where individuals mark their best availability for an event, and the moderator/requestor can pick the time with the most overlap?

@bmike How does the outspoken badge work?

@JasonSalaz if only iCloud had a free/busy service.... (then we could use the hundreds of calendar clients that support CalDAV)

"Posted 10 messages in chat that were starred by 10 different users."
@bmike That's a bit too heavy for one-offs.
Or were you being serious? I assumed it did. iCal and all...

Yes, but does that mean you post a message that is starred by ten users and if you have ten of those you get a badge?
Or, if you have ten different messages that have been starred by ten different users.
I'm confusing myself.
Hopefully you understood me Jason.

12:08 AM
I doubt bmike knows that with certainty, call it a hunch. Go search MSO.

Did you understand what I meant?

I do understand the question, and I know I can't exactly construe it to the specific criteria.

Ok, just wondering if you knew off the top of your head.

I suspect the badge says "10 messages starred" and "by 10 distinct users"
there can be 1 message started by 1 unique user, and if you get 9 more uniques pairs, then you get the badge.

Ok, so it's the second case that I said.

12:10 AM
@JasonSalaz Agreed - I was contemplating volunteering temporary accounts on my test server, but it might be unstable with 10.7.3 testing this weekend...
@JasonSalaz yeah - no clue if the 10 stars and 10 messages are disjoint sets

Wow, there's several different badges that no one has earned.

I figure if 10 people like one funny, then you should be in. But I don't make those rules - and since it is a silver badge - perhaps you really want 10 distinct funnies.

Though I suspect you are pretty close @bmike to most of them.

@daviesgeek I've only reached 200 point days eight times, so I have a long way to go for that epic badge

@JasonSalaz are you referring to doodle.com ?
it's nice, but I really would like the ability for every single participant to lay out all the times that they're free, instead of having the poll creator have to set specific times up front and have people vote on them
this chat is so active I can't keep up

12:27 AM
@KyleCronin I gave up long ago :)
Especially with all this talk of magpies
And TV references I don't get

this is kind of why I don't think that the "town hall" works in chat format

@KyleCronin yup - being silly doesn't work so well in chat

maybe we should take up Jason's suggestion and do a Hangout for it
3

@KyleCronin I want to feel like my G+ account has been worth having for some reason :)

indeed
I don't read G+ stuff anymore
just took me 5 minutes to find the "start a Hangout" button

12:30 AM
weird name for an event / schedule site. doodle? huh

12:42 AM
@bmike oh, really? I thought you would have been pretty close by now.
@KyleCronin that's pretty cool
@NathanGreenstein haha
even though i've been in chat quite often today, I don't get a lot of what they're saying.

does anyone have the capability to do a broadcast w/ G+?

@KyleCronin I don't think there's much you can do except record the screen and stream to justin.tv or something like that.
Unless you're YouTube and the White House...

well, according to things I've read on the internets, they've been rolling it out to other people as well

@KyleCronin Ooh, cool

but obviously not to me

12:48 AM
I imagine it's the same group of people who can do live streaming on YouTube
or a subset of that group

yeah, you're probably right
and what's the limit to the # of people that can join a hangout?

~10, IIRC
maybe 8

hm
6 candidates + 2 existing mods means we need at least 8 spots
might work
but we wouldn't be able to get other non-candidates on the call

Well, there's a lot of time between now and when the nomination process ends. I think we can expect at least a couple more by then.

perhaps
though the site banner did expire

12:54 AM
@bmike Okay, posted my (kinda half-baked) response.

A: What would happen if we expanded the scope of this site to include iTunes Connect?

Nathan GreensteinI like this idea, but I'm still a bit hesitant. Our site is currently geared towards users (and administrators) who want to get the most out of- or fix problems with- their Apple hardware and software. People asking questions about listing the app/media stores and iTunes U aren't asking as user...

1 hour later…
2:03 AM
bmike killed the room.
how? productivity.
Actually that's a lie, that's Nathan's answer.
I stand by what I said though.
Google+ Hangouts support 10 people.
The point is to have only candidates, and the moderator. The one moderator can receive info from the other staff members or elsewho and centralize them.
Fragmentation and so many question sources is really a rather big problem.

I ran off because I had to do actual work.

This is the second time today Daniel's come in seconds after Jason. Has anyone seen these two in the same place at the same time? ;)
@JasonSalaz I agree. I think the hangout could be fun, but that the chat is where the work will really get done.

I don't really exist.

I have: the podcast.

The mythical podcast that hasn't been posted?

2:05 AM
Touché

If we're talking conspiracy theories, that's like the photo of bigfoot I have on my broken camera

(Insert: "you don't have enough money for a second high quality mic and you're really a voice actor" joke here.)

Sorry Kyle
Not complaining, but it did turn into a joke at your expense, which wasn't my intent.

no, I deserve it, I need to really get it up

2:06 AM
Anyone know if X does any cleanup stuff during bootup after an update?
My laptop's fan is going like crazy, and all I did was reboot after the update

could it be mds?

is X X11, OS X, a varible, or somethine entirely different

OS X, I was being lazy :)
but I'd argue that X11 is a variable all by itself
with that, I've got to go. see you guys

I have no problem with lazy; I just don't do as well with confused
which is my natural state
Later, Nathan
My students left the classroom, so I should probably turn off the computer and go home

ok, bye Nathan and Daniel

2:08 AM
Later.
(there certainly are chat regulars...)

congrats

your second gold

Indeed

2:42 AM
26 Fanatic users.
not bad

Congrats @JasonSalaz. Welcome to the club :-)

you got in before I did? geez

I was after daviesgeek and before cksum (#20).

/me is hurt inside

sorry.
I've only missed 6 days since I joined the site.
And 3 of them were last weekend.

2:52 AM
at least that was after the gold badge for consecutive visits :P

I was at 150 days running when I went away.
Thus the term "fanatic"
or knowledge magpie. Either way...
But you have 2 gold, 19 silver, 37 bronze, and I've only got 2, 9, 32, so you're clearly in the lead for badges.

that's not the point!

3:21 AM
Hey I just noticed, apple.stackexchange.com/privileges/chat gives the wrong link and an outdated name for Ask Different
A pink highlight over the error: diigo.com/0mz1z

@Graham One of the many...
Not a page we have any control over, I'm afraid.

@NathanGreenstein thanks, should I report it in one of the other SE meta areas?

What was the wrong link part?

3:38 AM
" the chat for Apple - Stack Exchange is at: chat.stackexchange.com " — that's not Ask Different Chat, that's all rooms; and from all rooms it can be surprisingly difficult (even for an established user) to find Ask Different Chat ;-)

@GrahamPerrin Ah, I see
Well, it's the same generic link for all the sites there.
You can bring it up on meta if you want, but I doubt anything will change
They seem hesitant to customize these formulaic pages for different sites.

@NathanGreenstein yeah I'll bring it up but no rush. It's definitely misleading.

Okay, sounds good

3:54 AM
BTW I've been busy with other stuff for a few months, I should be back with Ask Different more often after a week or so :-)

4:09 AM
Are moderators on Ask Different also moderators on Meta.Ask Different?

@Daniel yeah

1 hour later…
5:20 AM
Ask Different as a whole.
But you knew that now.

5:35 AM
How are things in Colorado?
Earlier than it is here.
(profound observations about time zones)
@JasonSalaz
@JasonSalaz I'm amazed how many of the toys they used as the basis of the animation are ones I had. But my Voltron toys never danced like that.
Thanks for the links.

I wish Audition had a decent noise gate
I've played around with it a lot, but there's always stuff it cuts off
I just want something that will be completely hands-off when the person is talking, and for a few seconds before and after
but when they're not talking, just mute the audio

5:52 AM
I assume GarageBand is a bad choice for some reason, but it's the only multitrack audio software I've worked with.

if GB has a good noise gate I'll use it to preprocess the individual audio tracks
but I wasn't aware that it did
anyway, long story short: you'll hear breathing on podcast #22

What's different about #22 compared to the first 21?

well, this sort of thing is always an issue, it's just a matter of degree
I think the kind of headphones you were using tended to pick up your breath and scratching a lot

6:08 AM
'Doh. Sorry.
I'm new at this sort of thing.

understandable
and the benefits of having you on outweigh these minor audio issues
but if you being on the show becomes a regular thing, you'll need to get a better mic :)

nod

2 hours later…
8:05 AM
I also noticed how very ADD you were, Daniel.
The fact that you were mucking around the document pretty much the whole show, even when you were talking.
I was quite amused by that, actually.
Related: Google's collaborative user cursor indicators are HILARIOUSLY awesome.

1 hour later…
9:11 AM
Nathan Greenstein on February 02, 2012

This is the twenty-second episode of the Ask Different Podcast. Your hosts this week are Kyle Cronin, Jason Salaz, Nathan Greenstein, and Daniel.

Welcome to the podcast, Daniel! This is the perfect week to have Daniel on the podcast because, in addition to being the #10 user on Ask Different, he’s a community college teacher.

We begin with a discussion of Area 51 and the process of starting a Stack Exchange site. Kyle recalls that his ‘Apple’ proposal took some time to get off the ground; in many ways, that was harder than maintaining the site now. Daniel used to do something similar when he evaluated potential Usenet groups. …

5 hours later…
2:16 PM
@KyleCronin @Daniel He says that to all the guests ;-) (Ok - sample size of like 2 and some anecdotal discussion) Can't wait to hear the results of the show

2 hours later…
3:58 PM
@JasonSalaz mouth and brain not connected. While I'm talking, I'm usually working on the next thing I'm saying. A necessary skill when you lecture for six hours a day.

@Daniel I'd be interested in how that professional skill bleeds over into the rest of your life.
I'm always amazed how much my training shapes me and I need to be conscious of how odd the path I've chosen shapes my perceptions and actions.

1 hour later…
5:27 PM
@JasonSalaz Believe me, you haven't seen ADD. I am really ADD.

You say I haven't seen it, but I've seen you in this chat room.
Good enough? Maybe? :)

oh, yeah
Pretty good
Especially this:
18 hours ago, by daviesgeek
Oh, now I get the magpies....
17 hours ago, by daviesgeek
I still don't get it...
I am still laughing over that one....
BTW, @JasonSalaz @bmike @KyleCronin @stuffe @Daniel I am going to post a meta question about what we discussed yesterday so that all your answers are in one place, and I won't have to go search the chat room

5:41 PM

Q: Should we be changing titles from "How to...?" to "How can I/do I/should I....?"?

daviesgeekThis was a question that I brought up in the chat room yesterday. I brought the question over here to meta so that all the answers from all the people could be put into one place. The question is: Should we be changing titles from "How to...?" to "How can I/do I/should I....?"? I don't like "H...

Please chime in, especially if you chimed in on the discussion yesterday.

6:25 PM
Oh go one then :)

5 hours later…
11:14 PM
Wow, to get the MBP that I want would be $2,700!
@JasonSalaz Congrats!!
Sorry, that'd be $2,600
Still expensive.

11:38 PM
I could make it more expensive.
I have a (not at all unique) skill, in that manner.
$4,097.00
Ok, ok, $3,098.00 without the thunderbolt display.
2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x4GB
750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Pro - Auto-enroll
17 MBP, too

I wonder if this is intentional, selecting the most expensive option for everything in the Mac Pro config results in a price 5 cents shy of $20,000
Free Shipping!

likely

if I'm spending $20k, you bet it's free shipping

there's no tax in that calculation yet
and all the components are very specifically priced.
These ain't no amazon prices.

this even includes the printer and assorted dongles

11:54 PM
But does it include a Thunderbolt cable?

no, actually

Because those things are expensive.

$50, right?

$20K for a computer is one thing, but add in that cable...
yes

actually, no TB stuff at all
wait, has the Mac Pro not received TB yet?

11:55 PM
Target Disk Mode?

@Daniel hm?

No Thunderbolt.

wow

I was saying you'd want the cable so you could boot it in Target Disk Mode.
But without a TB port, that's kind of a moot point.

well, TDM works with FW as well

11:57 PM
'Doh. Right. I'm thinking of my MBA with no firewire. But MP still has firewire.

yeah

correct. No thunderbolt for the Mac Pros.
See Also -> The Death of "Pro"

I'm glad Apple's continuing with target disk mode over TB, that has made my life so much easier on countless occasions

Does that mean you have a TB cable?

no no, over FW

11:59 PM
OK

I mean, when they got rid of FW on the Airs, I'm glad they replaced the capability
though I'm still a little disappointed they also got rid of the IR port
