Hello, from Lion!
... roar!
02:01
@VxJasonxV The fan of my macbook is pretending to be a lion.
Who knew spotlight indexing could be so taxing...
geez, 85%cpu from mds and mdworker
02:22
Hey Nathan, thanks for working hard and editing everyone's questions including mine for the better. Just tell me you don't have a sock puppet account :)
@SteveMoser Welcome :)
And no puppeteering going on here
@Nathan Good to hear. Sorry for such a short first answer I just wanted to be the first then edit and make improvements after. Is that behavior frowned upon at all on Stack Exchange sites?
@SteveMoser You're fine. I just happened to drop in on that question at the wrong time.
Since I didn't know that Safari mode was part of recovery mode, I was confused.
But your edit cleared it up.
@Nathan I looked for a restart in Safari option in Sys Prefs and didn't find anything..
Yeah, I didn't see anything in there either.
02:48
I admit, I'm looking forward to full screen mode in Chrome.
@VxJasonxV works fine omm
what?
nonono, their Full Screen Mode is one they implemented themselves. People generally call it "kiosk mode".
It's not Lion Full Screen, because it doesn't have the opposing arrows.
Chrome's full screen doesn't give it it's own space and all that.
buuuuuuuuuuh?!
what channel are you on?
02:51
I'm on the dev channel for crying out loud!!
I'm on Chrome 14.
were there flags or anything you had to set?
Comment 43 by [email protected], Jul 18 (2 days ago)
The next Chrome 13 update will have the fullscreen button removed.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=74065
So apparently I would have had it if I were using Lion before a few days ago. But I wasn't so I never saw it.
and after you apply that update, you lose it too.
You should still have the full screen feature, just not the bars. For all the reasons I mentioned before.
What is the plus icon supposed to do in the quicklook window?
@VxJasonxV Resize the QL window and click it.
resizes for content but doesn't center. well... halfway there is good enough I guess :P
haha, divvy works on QL windows
03:33
For all the "I want, I want, I want..." I do, I do not want these: lockerz.com/s/121929500
Awww, no inline preview for lockerz? Boo
03:43
For all your OS X Lion question needs, try http://t.co/4rY0NSf
interestingly, the Twitter app unshortens it to askdifferent.com
yep
many apps do
well that wasn't really the interesting part, but that he used "askdifferent.com" instead of "apple.stackexchange.com"
what's the best way to get GCC without XCode?
my first instinct would be to compile it, but that obviously won't work
Nice first instinct :P.
Xcode is free, why avoid it?
too heavy space wise?
03:52
it's currently taking up 10GB on my machine
I'd like to cut that down by about 10GB
basically, I'd like to get all the command line tools of XCode without all the other stuff getting in the way
:P
I think I know of this great site you can ask that question on.
I think it's called... Ask... Apple?
askdifferent.net
the funny thing is that that's technically true :P
but you would know first hand.
yeah it redirects
going through my apps, there's actually quite a few I've decided not to reinstall once I redo my machine
Interesting;
Of course there's no app store previews on this chat... bwaaaagh
03:57
the biggest one is TextMate. I've been using TextMate since before I even owned a Mac and I was using a hackintosh install on my old Toshiba laptop
but the latest BBEdit is just phenominal and TextMate has basically died
my hope is that by the time the trial runs out I'll be able to buy it
in the same vein, I'm going to also not reinstall Emacs
... my git binary disappeared O_o
bummer
just get the latest source and recompile it
or you could just use the GitHub app
@VxJasonxV can you test iStumbler to see if it works?
the github app does not let me use git stuff for sites other than github
Tower?
I ain't paying for that shit.
04:02
is it really that bad?
$ /Applications/GitHub.app/Contents/Resources/git/bin/git --version
git version 1.7.4

I guess I should have figured.
no, I just can't justify >= $50 for something I don't do enough with
yeah, just recompile it
iStumbler seems to work swimmingly
oh wow
04:04
I remember that the 10.6 update broke it, I wanted to make sure it still worked
back to the mac indeed... that icon is a bit familiar
the location icon?
yeah
I don't recall explicitly seeing that
yeah, it's not in SL
you know, when Apple was pushing "back to the Mac" I was hoping they'd bring some iOS hardware to the Mac
like GPS and 3G chips
04:05
that would have been awesome
you know
people do make 3g cards/usb dongles
and probably gps cards too
true, but it's not the same
plus if they added it, they'd probably bake in OS support like iOS has
no, it's not. nor is a computer a device you can hold and use easily with just two hands.
maybe they'd even have an ultra-low power standby where you could locate/wipe your mac if you wanted ot
maybe GPS isn't super practical, but I know a lot of people would love to have 3G built in
tethering is nice, but it's not the same
to answer your question re: gcc without Xcode, I suggest homebrew, and the 'homebrew-alt' collection
but you still need Xcode in the first place, IIRC
04:09
yeah that looks like some sort of build script
I wonder what would happen if I just installed XCode and deleted the /Developer directory
I would be willing to bet that something is hidden down in there.
actually, since I'm going to be wiping this machine either tonight or tomorrow, I'll give it a try
Meaning that if you kill /Developer, some binaries even though they're in /usr/bin will mysteriously fail.
I'm testing it now
seems OK so far
although it's very wasteful to install all that just to delete it
I'm sure you'll find a way to cope.
04:16
I suppose
anyone notice how the F3 and F4 buttons on the new MBAs have different icons
actually, F3 looks the same but F4 has been changed from dashboard to the new launcher
indeed I did not catch that
I think I found a bug
my command-tab is broken. And I suspect that's because I directly closed a full screen app
oh, I think remote desktop is trapping it even in the background. yikes
05:06
It's so lonely in here :(.
This is an effective implementation of full screen:

5 hours later…
09:43
@VxJasonxV What app is that?
09:54
Ooh, I just realized that the swag was announced exactly one day ago
has anyone recieved it?

3 hours later…
user30
12:33
Getting intermittent errors trying to download XCode again
13:43
I hate the new dashboard - everything else I like. You can't drag stuff onto the desktop! No more iStat Nano for me...
@Odinulf You have to use a Terminal command to enable that, I think.
@Nathan I did that, but it doesn't work with the new UI.
Works for me...
com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
@Nathan my commands would carry over, correct? I mean, my command for making my hidden apps transparent carried over from Snow Leopard
@Odinulf Depends if they made changes to the plist file that you modified.
13:45
Yeah.
If they changed it, it got replaced with the new version.
Has anyone else had issues with the new UI in the beginning of using Lion? My install seems slow. Does that change with time?
Mine seem fast enough.
Give it a few restarts' time to rebuild caches. That may help.
Yes, perhaps. I have a Mac Pro, which is why it is slightly bizarre that it would occur for me.
It only has 3gb of memory, but it has 2.66 quad core. (Xenon)
I can get up to 32 GB of memory though... :)
Hmm. My iMac has 10GB memory and 3.2 two core (4 virtual)
I wonder how much virtual cores help in 10.7
13:49
Cool. I would bet that apple would take advantage of the hardware as best it could. How much was your mac?
I got it as a refurb and I've upgraded the memory.
I think it was ~$1500
USD
Which is better Unity3d or OpenGl?
They are different.
There is no "better"
I bet OpenGL will perform better on an iOS device
Do you mean for iOS 3d programming?
13:52
I mean Easy
You would be suprised
UNity
Unity by far.
Oh
Is easier.
Ya
I want to make FPS 3d game
What genre?
For that sort of thing I would use the same engine Gears of War uses
let me think of it
Oh, yes. Unreal engine.
I don't even know abc of game
What? I'm sorry - I don't understand that.
14:03
I mean I am beginner
Oh. Okay.
Can you do 3d modelling?
Because, really, that is essential.
No
But I can learn
Could you please guide me?
Well, I like blender, personally.
How can I use it in iOS?
So, all in all, I would use: 1) Blender beta for modelling and 2) Unreal or Unity (depending on your Operating System)
You publish it onto iOS, you can't actually create 3d models in iOS
14:14
Why?People are making 3d FPS games
Why is modeling required btw?
What would be an approach for iOS 3d FPS game?
No, I mean, you can use the models in iOS, but creation in iOS is impossible , as there is no editor.
Modeling is required because you are making a 3d FPS and unless you want to buy models you must make them yourself.
Well, at least for a commercial game.
@ManjotSingh This room isn't really geared towards programming. You might want to try one of the Stack Overflow rooms.
Although, Odinulf seems to have you covered in here :)
I thought about making one once
I researched it and everything - too much work/
Not enough time :)
@Odinulf Thank you
No problem.
14:22
I'll take care of it @Nathan
Not to say that you can't make one - its just hard.
Actually by playing games on my iPhone,I thought it would be difficult but I'll try no issues
14:45
Today is Lion day +1.

1 hour later…
16:12
@Odinulf Indeed - thanks so much for participating here. Have you jumped into Lion yet?

1 hour later…
17:17
@bckbck Wren.app. $5 on the Mac App Store.
I was being exceedingly sarcastic when I posted that, but it actually makes for a good writing environment. Very pretty.
@bckbck One day ago? I suspect you mean one day ago, last month.
17:32
I'm a windows person, but I can't really understand this guy: theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2095898/…
It's hip to be a Apple detractor.
oh god the inquirer uses tynt.
"Apple also now has something called "Mission Control", which it's so very proud of, and it allows you to access running programs, much like Task Manager under Windows, and see open documents and web pages."

If Mission Control is "like" the Task Manager. I'll stick with OS X, thanks.
Plus, the task manager doesn't show me open documents and web pages; So frankly, Ian Morris, you're ridiculous.
I like the second paragraph, it's an interesting analysis of the state of video and media. But unfortunately the whole rest of the article sucks... a lot.
There is a "Flame Author" link on this article. Wow :/.
Isn't The Inquirer considered a tabloid?
18:22
@tombull89 I can't believe I actually rewarded the inquirer with even one click of that apple-baiting headline. TL;DR - apple over charges and under innovates. Author maintains lion is slowly catching up to windows 3.1 since it can't copy features as well or as fast as redmond engineers

2 hours later…
20:00
What's the path to App Store.app?
/Applications/App Store.app
Oh, did they move it?
I thought it was under /System/Library/ somewhere in SL.
Couldn't tell you re: SL :).
20:19
It defaults to the same location on Lion and Snow Leopard - /Applications/App\ Store.app

2 hours later…
22:25
@VxJasonxV whoops.
:)
I hope to come home to see the package in the mail.
it would be nice if they let us know when they were mailing them
I come back from school every day and hope to see that package arrive.
I live in a building where packages are kept at the front desk, but the people that run it have a habit of not telling me when I get something
so I don't want to be constantly checking like an idiot, but I also don't want to have it sitting there for days
@KyleCronin 6-8 weeks
22:30
@bckbck "6-8 weeks" is an inside joke from when Stack Overflow was being built
its usage here does not provide any information
besides, even if it were accurate, that's a span of 2 weeks
@KyleCronin I know, I was using it as a in-joke
I see
I thought maybe you were quoting Jeff meta.apple.stackexchange.com/questions/565/…
If you guys haven't received it.....
@bckbck maybe I have and I just don't know
I think mine may reach me much much later
Due to where I live
22:37
Singapore, according to your profile
yeah, that's pretty far
Singapore, according to chat about a week ago :D.
heheheh
And also I live in public housing, where they can't give you your package when not around
Miss the first delivery and they will redeliver for free the second time
Miss the third time and my $30 would be instantly gone
recently I've been thinking about how the idea of having an address is a bit antiquated
it's a bit like the way the phone system used to work with area codes and stuff
where a specific phone number was a specific extension in a specific city in a specific state, etc
nowadays with cell phones and number portability, that doesn't exist
but it still does for addresses
your address corresponds with a specific building in a specific city, etc...
if you want to leave for a month you have to have your mail stopped or have someone check it for you
if you want to move, you have to fill out a form with the post office letting them know your new address so they can forward your mail
why not have a permanent, abstract address?
something like a PO box that's not tied to a specific location
and when the postal service gets something addressed to your abstract address they have a system that identifies where to physically route the item
23:00
While I agree whole-heartedly, there's a big difference between an always-connected device phoning home.
And a place that... isn't/doesn't.
23:59
I'm talking more about how people address their letters than about the technical details
