Q: Why this meta answer received so many downvotes and what can be done for such future answers?

TheIndependentAquariushttp://meta.crafts.stackexchange.com/a/63/96 Here I just posted the quote from the stackoverflow blog and an earlier discussion. Why did it receive 3 downvotes? This doesn't seem to be about disagreement since the gist of other up voted answer is also the same. What is this about then?

> Art restoration is ultimately an art/craft in itself. Through restoring a work, you add your own arts to create a new product.
@Zizouz212 That immediately brought to mind bbc.com/news/world-europe-19349921
Oh god
Perhaps the most (in)famous example of creating a new product
Yeah, definitely
I don't think anyone has scared me that bad with pings... You should feel proud :P
01:38
XD Sorry
lol, it just caught me off guard. Working away, and this sharp noise in my headphones
Made me jump
Besides, it was probably a good thing since I was falling asleep anyway :)
It's a pretty funky BOINK, isn't it?
Yep :)
02:20
@Erica Haven't seen that in a while.
02:41
At least they took care of the missing paint.
Wonder if 25.7 questions per day is sustainable :)

Q: When should colour and colouring tags be used?

TheIndependentAquariusThere are two tags: colour and colouring. Now I realize that when the question is about how to deal with colours, colouring tag will not be appropriate. colouring will be appropriate where people are applying colours to a medium. colour tag will be appropriate where people ask about how to deal...

@Erica Super pro. Second one doesn't have all that crap white stuff, lol
user132126
Got my 500 rep so expect me to get into heavy editing over the next 3 days. We'll get everything on point and looking sharp for the public
09:34
@Matt Good, how are you doing?
Good to see this Arts & Crafts beta, hope it will be live soon and many people would be active on this.
09:46
There are no owners for this room. How come?

10:51
@Kanth Alright. Losing a lot of personal time with the beta. Want to read and answer all the things I can.
11:10
@Matt Yeah, that's lot of work for you. As I can see you are the only one here and I appreciate it as it's never been easy going first to make something active and sophisticated.
What have you been up to?
11:29
@Kanth I am definitely not the only one here. There is a good group of people around and I hope the community gets bigger. I am more into woodworking lately but all the talk of stitches has my crochet hooks wanting to see the light of day again.

15:58
@Matt Cool, do you paint? I am more interested to learn painting
I have only ever done one painting. I want to do more.
Don't know where you are located but where I am they have painting workshops where you go for a couple of hours and the instructor takes you from start to finish for a painting.

Q: "Tools" tag is too broad - should it be removed/blacklisted?

CatijaOne of my questions was edited this morning with the note: Replaced the ambiguous "hooks" tag with the more general "tools". In my opinion tools is utterly too broad and will apply to way too many different pieces of equipment. No one can specialize in "tools" because it could include anyth...

@Matt A lot of people just use granny squares for pixel crochet stuff... what sort of scale are you trying to achieve?
Like a granny square would be one colour? I guess I more mean multiplie colours in the square
I can't see DeviantArt at work
This one is awesome... it's worked on the diagonal, which I didn't even realize was possible and it's not a granny square: repeatcrafterme.com/2015/09/…
16:08
@Catija Yeah.... that is more of what I was thinking. Have to read the whole thing when I get time but that looks really cool
I was hoping to make a kleenex cozy that looked like a minecraft block. They are 16x16. It might still be too much detail for that but it is close enough.
At least that's something where the "inside" doesn't matter what it looks like... But you might have more fun with embroidery for that since you can embroider on stiff plastic frame... I think some companies even offer a base design that's for covering boxes of tissues.
16:23
I considered embroidery for it but I was curious nonetheless. If you are up for it you should make an answer that talks about C2C crocheting.
I more prefer embroidery in those frames...
Yeah, I've just found out about it so I'm watching how it works in a linked video
I meant to say I prefer crossstitching for pixel art. I just needed more excuses to use my crochet hooks.
Oh, sure. I do too. I've not actually done embroidery but I used to cross stitch all the time.
user132126
How's it going, crew?
@CreationEdge going crafty?
@Catija My brother bought me some alpaca yarn that I have yet to use. Has some very vibrant colours.
user132126
16:28
Oh, yeah. I'm so psyched to be able to edit and review now.
@CreationEdge Grrrr... I need to answer more.
@Catija You have one of mine you could go for!
@CreationEdge Yeah. I have been doing a bunch of the suggested edits.
@Catija What are you crafty strengths?
user132126
How do we feel about semi-meta tags?
@CreationEdge Example?
16:32
@Matt I'm writing. :P
Mostly I just do crochet. I haven't done much cross stitch recently.
I'm not bothered by It could be paired with in my mind... one for IDing tools in hand and the other for picking the right tool for the job.
user132126
If we want to go that route, I'm fine with it. Those are successful types of tags on SFF and M&TV, although some really hate them.
user132126
I don't think ID could realistically ever overwhelm or questions.
Not the way it does on M&TV.
Gardening has plant-ID and that seems to be just fine for them.
user132126
I agree.
we have those tags on WW as well and they are successful.

I can't remember the name of this painting tool!
OK, posted my answer.
user132126
It's a little card with different shades of gray on it, and a hole, so you hold it up to your subjects to find the right value
You mean a grey percentage chart thingy? One box for every 10% of black?
user132126
Yeah
user132126
That helped me find it, thank you
16:45
user132126
user132126
^^ That's something like I was looking for.
Yeah... I'm a film/photography person so we use them to set white balance on cameras but they don't need holes like that.
UGH. So much DVing in meta without people explaining. I know enough not to really complain about it but with a site so new, it's really important to explain why you're DVing.
user132126
I know DVs are anonymous, but as it stands, we have 3 varying answers, all with -1, and no alternate suggestions that people are agreeing on. If you're downvoting, please consider posting your own answer. — CreationEdge 1 min ago
17:28
@Catija That has been bothering me on the main site as well. DV should be anonymous but this early on in the sites inception will not help improve the site. I have gotten a share of DV but at some commented as to why
@Catija Just know that I can proof read others but not my own. I was reading "stitch" the entire time
In defense of my view on tags on this post I though it would be better to encourage more tags and then clean them up later tags are important. I don't know if the [tag:casting-on] will be good but the point is we should give it time. I think I mistakely approved its removal but I am pro tagging. Questions get 5 tags. If we can use them all contructively we should. It will help users find the content they want faster if they know how to search

@CreationEdge I have a good question that was closed on WW.SE once I knew what it was. It fits in with the crowd more.

Q: How do we feel about terminology questions?

MattI was reading this post How can I reliably identify the local color of a still life in non-white light? and I saw the term "local colour". I didn't actually know what that means. Thankfully the OP added in a wiki link to save any perceived ambiguity or confusion. A simple question that would ste...

I don't get those meta DVs for the color question.
user132126
I used basically the same concept for the tools one, which got upvoted quickly. Perhaps I'm just not familiar enough with color theory to get why there's objections?
20:13
@CreationEdge I've got to say... There's a lot of weird votes on meta
user132126
20:50
Yeah.
user132126
I know it's still very early, but when exactly should we start enforcing the meta policies? In private beta, or public?
@CreationEdge Right away.
But what do you mean meta policies?
user132126
Whatever the community votes for on things we want to do?
user132126
Like some of the tag things, or types of questions. When there's only 4-5 votes total, is that enough?
Yeah. 4-5 is more than enough.
For a site, you need everything to be clean and organized from the get go - which is why meta is crucial to site development. It's all the reason why we have private beta - to figure out the quirks and quarks for the site :)

Haha, then we should change the room name.
Well, we don't have a room owner, so we can't change the room name.
We'll have to get Robert to do it...
Robert Cartaino on July 27, 2010
There's a bit of a leadership vacuum inside the new Stack Exchange communities in public beta. We've put a lot of responsibility on each group to take ownership of their own site. The Stack Exchange team can act as guide, but we don't always have the domain knowledge to understand the needs of each group. As the Network expands, this stretches our ability to assure that each community's issues are properly addressed.
Dunno if you all have seen that... it's old but it seems like the only info around for the pro-tem mod appointment process.
user132126
So, what, we create our own meta post for mods, now?
Dunno... I've asked that in my most recent meta question... which should be popping up in here any time now.
Look at you, being all edity!
user132126
:D
user132126
That may be too much at once, actually.
22:27
Nah.
user132126
Everything is pretty recent, so the front page doesn't really get too bumped around.
We really need someone to start approving tag wiki edits... it's depressing to see them so blank.
I know they want to control things at the outset but I don't know that the CMs are paying enough attention to us and our needs.
user132126
I haven't had more questions I can answer except one today, so that 750 is going to take a bit.
user132126
I'll try to think of a bunch of questions for this weekend, though.

Q: What is the process/timeline for getting pro-tem moderators?

CatijaI know that moderators on beta sites are appointed by the SE CMs. What I don't know is when that occurs or what milestones must be reached before it does. I had assumed that it occurred pretty soon after the site entered public Beta... which is supported by the info from this blog post: That...

Alright, dinner time!
And even then, you can't approve them alone... we need... 3? for tag wikis?
