@KarlBielefeldt a comment does mention that it was sumetimes funky with the HTTPSEverywhere plugin, and I just realize that I use that at workbut not at home. A clue! Let's see if the new implementation solves it, otherwise I can turn that plugin off. It's just interesting that I never had that problem until yesterday, so maybe they were rolling out some parts of it already.

@Beofett didn't work, but turning off HTTPSEverywhere plugin for *.stackexchange.com did the trick.

@Beofett - re: "your parents are the only parents you have"... As they used to say in USSR: "as with potatoes, you don't get to pick your parents". I'm kinda stumped in terms of explaining the simile to any Westerner who did NOT have the happy experience of "you don't get to pick potatoes" and other assorted real food shortages :)
