guiverc's comment made people think that this question is off-topic (it's not). It has 3 close votes as OT and 1 as unclear. I think that it's actually unclear, but I cannot vote because it will be closed as OT.
there are two currently bountied questions about sound
the same answer has been posted to both of them
the answer makes the, uh, surprising suggestion of installing unity DE if the reader can't find the settings it refers to, as the author is using 12.04
my feeling is that these answers are really really bad
and don't even properly address the questions they're posted to
but, after all, stuff like virtualization, using extra monitors etc is all stuff I'm unfamiliar with
@BeastOfCaerbannog I was thinking about NAA, but the description says "This was posted as an answer, but it does not attempt to answer the question...". It does answer the question, it just is a duplicate of a different answer. I went with a custom flag
@cocomac to add to what @BeastOfCaerbannog said, there are different causes... sometimes someone posts a very similar answer that doesn't add anything new because they didn't see the previous answer. This can be flagged as NAA or you can use a custom flag. Sometimes people repost an answer to say that it worked - usually you see copied text in that case, often with messed up formatting. You can flag this as NAA.
Or, sometimes an answer is plagiarised from another, like it's copy pasted with no commentary or attempt to give attribution - this should be flagged for mod attention, unless it contains a new link, which will be spam - in that case it should be flagged as spam
Occasionally, two people post almost identical answers almost simultaneously. In that case we leave them both for fairness, so do check the time stamps
like this answer you flagged @cocomac ... okay it's the same idea as that one, but the explanation is quite different
@BeastOfCaerbannog I come across those too, but I also come across a lot of "duplicate answer" flags I disagree with
like, let's say a long answer contains some idea along with a lot of other things, and another answer is posted that only presents that one idea. Generally I'd be inclined to leave that answer as shorter answers are easier to read
@Zanna I'm not really inclined to delete that new answer...
I'm a bit worried that someone else will delete that post if I leave the flag... so I've dismissed the flag as helpful without doing anything. If you @cocomac or anyone else wants to make a case here for deleting the post then please feel free to talk about it here... you can also flag it again
btw @cocomac I very much like your use of a mod flag with a clear explanation. Posts like that flagged as NAA might not get handled properly (whether they should be deleted or not) because there's a lack of context in the review queue and the page where flags are displayed (though obviously one should click through to the page... that doesn't always happen)
I won't flag it, but I might edit it (unless @cocomac wants to do it). However I think that dismissing the flag as helpful was right, even though you didn't take some action.
This is, unfortunately, the schema I often see.
There is some question which quickly becomes very popular because of an interesting title or an interesting problem, however usually an easy one. Almost immediately there appear a few answers, which are posted independently, providing sometimes diff...
