@traducerad If there are no child processes to wait for (no zombie children and no still-running children), then wait returns -1 and sets errno to ECHILD. Otherwise, typically no. As stated in lower in the section of the manpage you quoted (assuming we're looking at the same manpage), anytime wait or waitpid returns -1, errno is set. The next section, ERRORS, lists the situations under which this occurs, so I recommend looking there.

@traducerad With that said, although technical questions and discussions do often arise here in the Downboat, usually as an outgrowth of efforts to clean up and improve posts on the site (which is what this room all about), this room isn't really for that, and such discussions don't tend to get a lot of attention here (and we often eventually move them to another room where they end up getting even less attention).

So you may want to ask about this in the general room. The best thing to do, if you haven't already, would be to post a question about it with more details than you've given here, if you haven't already done that. If you then ask about it in chat, you can link to your question as well. This has the additional benefit that other people can be helped by the knowledge imparted by the question and its eventual answers.

I believe fairly strongly that your question would be on-topic for Ask Ubuntu (so long as that's what you're using and you don't mind answers that don't cover other systems at all), though perhaps some others would disagree. It's also on-topic on Unix & Linux and Stack Overflow (though you should pick one site, rather than posting on multiple SE sites).

Some folks in /dev/chat (Unix & Linux's main chat room) are likely to be able to help... though the culture there even more strongly (and, in my opinion, rightly) emphasizes posting a question.
