Since the "answer" was posted by OP, I'm voting to close the question as no-repro as well.

@pomsky I'd put up with it because it's an accepted answer by the one that asked the question, therefore constructive. no repro CV on the question is OK however.

This edit suggestion is trying to replace an answer with the editor own totally different answer, and should be rejected. (Also, Shift still does work to show the GRUB menu on boot.)

Do we have a meta question for this? The idea that nobody should ever answer a question that anyone else has cast a dupe vote on sounds familiar, but I can't remember it well enough to find anything, and the author has explained why they posted their answer, so I don't know what that commenter's objection is.
I returned to the post to remove my own comments and will still probably do so soon, but if we have something on meta for this then I could maybe drop a link.

5:11 AM
@EliahKagan Natty can't detect whether answers are correct? Oh no! @BhargavRao can you fix that bug please?
2
@EliahKagan looks like at least one comment was removed so I'm not exactly sure what happened but there is a post on meta asking whether answers on dupe questions should be downvoted at least... not sure what else we have
Well, there's that one
I wish I'd copy edited that question before I voted to close it... now I've favourited it to remind me to edit after the period when doing so would send it to the reopen queue

5:27 AM
What is this? The "strategy" of not demanding that everyone immediately acquiesce to somebody else's likely-minority opinion of what's a duplicate is not appropriate?

@Zanna I think I did figure out what post to cite... but I think it's more important that I clarify the parts of the history that the author had left out. Specifically, the author had left out the part about how if I had been more proactive at correcting my own dupe vote when it turned out wrong, then there would have been way less confusion.
This is my comment. I've removed the others from before. I'll probably remove that too at some point somewhat soon, or perhaps someone else will flag it away as no longer needed before I get to it.

@EliahKagan that commenter seems to be particularly horrified by the idea that somebody might gain some reputation by answering a duplicate question

I realized the commenter I was talking to on main has not expressed any view like that and probably was more interested in an explanation that was specific to the post being asked about.

@EliahKagan makes sense :)

Anyway, I now think that calling the presence of answers on duped questions "potentially a problem," as I did in that old meta answer, is a substantial overstatement. I consider it to be almost no problem at all.
Is there any good reason to restrict the site analytics tool to 25k?
This is actually not a change of subject.
One nice thing about that tool is that it's really helpful in providing perspective about how people find posts, because it shows that people come to Ask Ubuntu from search engines.
(Mainly Google.)
Anyway, for situations where people object to someone who answers a question they should supposedly have known ought to closed instead, the best post I've seen that covers why there is usually a problem with such objections is Stack Overflow Isn’t Very Welcoming. It’s Time for That to Change.
In this particular case, however, I think it was more useful for me to comment about specifically what had happened.
Especially considering that part of what happened was that I had handled the dupe-related flagging and commenting rather poorly.

6:01 AM
@EliahKagan there was a time when mods were summarily deleting answers on questions closed as duplicates, even when they were upvoted, apparently because that would cause visitors to be instantly redirected to the target. This seems to me an utterly terrible policy!

@Zanna Yeah, it was terrible. The only situations where that made sense was when the answers had something really wrong with them, or something that had become wrong with them due to the passage of time (something beyond just normally becoming outdated). If you find those posts, we can flag them for moderator attention or post on meta about them. Not necessarily all of them, but probably most of them.
This is related to why I'm against the system's current behavior of not taking away rep from authors of deleted answers that had more than a certain score and existed for more than a certain amount of time. The main effect of this is that people are comfortable having stuff deleted they otherwise wouldn't want deleted. We should lose rep when our posts are deleted, under most circumstances, because any reasonable objection to that is a reasonable objection to the deletion, too.
If we can't explain to someone why it is justified that they lost the rep conferred for a post, we probably can't explain why it was appropriate to delete it, either.

Is this question a duplicate of something?
(Regarding my edit to that message: I think the direct post links is probably more useful than the LQP review link but here that is if you want it and don't feel like checking the message history.)
Hi @jokerdino!

hi, good morning

Good morning.
Has the flow of questions about problems with newly installed or upgraded-to 18.04 systems lessened already? Or is this just the usual decrease in overall site traffic due to the weekend?

6:15 AM
there's definitely a weekend effect.
also, it's been a long while since I lived on the homepage.

:)
Well it can also be seen in the review queues...

oh, I don't go there either :S

...which I suppose you don't live in nowadays, either, since your vast mod powers could have a heavy-handed effect. :)

yeah, there are days when I thought I should get a 3k sock.

this is why I don't want to be a mod...

6:27 AM
@Zanna there are other days when I thought, 'wow good thing I am a mod'.

@jokerdino every day I'm thinking "good thing awesome people like @jokerdino are mods"

nobody thinks that.

... not impulsive careless people like me
@jokerdino why do you say that? don't you believe me?

I'm not sure what the best way to review this suggested edit is, but it seems to me that the most significant thing it does is add the tag, which shouldn't be added to posts, so I rejected it with a custom message explaining that. One more review is needed, so if that's wrong (my review, I mean -- I'm not in doubt about the uselessness of the tag)... then someone can review the other way.

@EliahKagan reject & edited to add formatting and alt text

Thanks.
I did what I could on this post while improving an edit suggestion, but it could use another edit by someone who can discern more of what the OP means than I could.

6:54 AM
:( can't tell. It's frustrating (to would-be editors) when the mistakes make it so unclear what's meant you can't correct them
why off-topic? The commenter has given the answer...

I don't know. My review knocked it from the queue. But it might still get closed. Best to check back later.

7:14 AM
@EliahKagan what are they asking?!
speaking of the site analytics (25k needed to view) what's with the traffic graph? looks... kinda broken?

@Zanna Yeah, I think the main alternative is to close as unclear, as I've done. But, taken together with their comments, the question seems to be saying they booted, saw stuff from GRUB they're not used to seeing, and have no GUI. They do something -- probably switching to a different virtual console -- and they have a non-graphical login screen they don't know how to use. They want to restore some combination of Plymouth (the boot splash screen) and the GUI.
If that interpretation is correct, then it might be a duplicate of the canonical black screen question.
...*Or*, they're talking about recovery mode, and that requires them to enter their password, even when we usually expect it doesn't. The most common way to achieve that situation, especially unintentionally, is by setting a root password. I think we have something about how to deal with that if one doens't know what the password is. Of course, chrooting in from a live CD and changing it unsetting it would work.
But that might be only addressing a secondary problem that arises when they try to fix the fist problem.
...So yeah, it's just unclear.
However, maybe those related questions should be mentioned in a comment or something.
@Zanna Oh, is that still broken?
There's a Meta Stack Exchange post for that bug.

Q: Traffic (views, visits) isn't correctly registered on Site Analytics or Area 51

GlorfindelIn the site analytics, privileged users can monitor some things like the total traffic on the site. However, it seems to be broken at the moment, all figures are almost zero. This is how it looks for Meta Stack Exchange (other sites show similar pictures):

@karel Seems okay to me. I've added my close vote. The question I answered involves a specific bug, too, but that aspect of it would likely be regarded as OT Bug at this point, while the rest fits as a duplicate. The workarounds in the target question are already applicable.

@EliahKagan I'm pretty sure at least one of the upvotes is because it's an issue with GNOME and you know... "GNOME sucketh"! ;-)
May very well be just a coincidence, but I noticed this trend for some time.

@EliahKagan maybe the user posted like 10 of the same answer everywhere?

Are you recalling that specifically?

no, just speculating about stuff mods know/can see that I don't/can't

Yeah, I won't write, "I know for darn sure this deletion was wrong!" in a custom flag. :)

sorry

3:37 PM
this actually looks like OT-bug

@Zanna If we can find info about it being deleted as part of a storm of repeated posts, I can refrain from flagging. Though either it will get flagged or asked about at some other point down the line, or the future of 10k users auditing deletion is bleak.
@pomsky Okay. I'm somewhat inclined not to retract my "unclear" vote, but I'd VTC it as OT bug if I hadn't already voted to close.

Hmm, okay. Are there others?

no, that's the only one. But looks from the comment like others were deleted?
any questions closed as dupes of that one...?

3:44 PM
Seems worth looking into. Also if they are dupes and we close them then future 10k users will be able to understand what's going on with the deletions.

I've looked through the user's answers. I just found that one, too. Still, that probably gives enough information to surmise that the other -- and perhaps more besides -- were deleted as a response to the user posting multiple identical or near-identical answers under circumstances that did not warrant it.

I didn't know removing quiet and/or splash parameters could help with that issue

Should some of the posts get comments mentioning other posts, or something, then?

@EliahKagan Same here, it's unclear too, "broken" doesn't say anything.

3:58 PM
I don't know how hardware-dependent the issue is...

(unrelated to the above, but I think on-topic for this room) What information can be requested from the OP of this question? I'm talking to them in AUGR so if someone here has an idea about what the question could benefit from, it might be worthwhile to mention it there (or in a comment on the question).

4:55 PM
@EliahKagan since the user who posted (at least) 2 identical answers didn't say what their own hardware was, or exactly what symptoms they had, and since the OP of this question solved their own issue for that device, I cannot see anywhere it would be especially useful to make comments...
Do you think that question might benefit from being linked to that one? It's already linked to that one where the undeleted version of the answer is
shrug idk... should I look for bug reports?

@Zanna It's closed. It's absolutely not POB. I was about to post a comment to the effect of...

...but I reread the question and it seems to me that it may be unclear. Where did they read this? What claim are they actually trying to evaluate?
If you think it's clear enough to reopen then you may want to comment.

Uhm... sorry to interrupt, what to do with this? Looks too broad and unclear (no DE info), and OP probably doesn't want to edit.

@pomsky oh hmm... can it be interpreted generally as asking for features that make the pointer more findable perhaps?

@Zanna That would still require the knowledge of their DE (and its version) I believe, which OP didn't provide (even after being asked).
