@TheDestroyer In his Brahma Sutra Bhasya, he rejects philosophy of Yoga... ie. Prakirti is Eternal and Purush runs it... However in my view he rejects only philosophical aspect... not other aspects...

@Tezz Well, personally I'm skeptical of the story of Adi Shankaracharya entering the king's body, but in any case I'm just expressing skepticism of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. It is certainly possible to acquire powers through meditation and Tapasya.

@KeshavSrinivasan @TheDestroyer No one can completely refute Patanjali Yoga Sutra... The first verse itself says "Yoga Chitta Vritti Nirodha." Yoga is stopping fluctuation of mind... Now who can object that stopping fluctuations of mind is bad...

@Tezz I'm not saying that every single statement in the Yoga Sutras is incorrect. If the Yoga Sutras were to say that water is wet, it would be right in that respect. I'm just saying that I view it with skepticism.

@TheDestroyer I agree that bookish knowledge isn't enough for Moksha. That's why I intend to perform Sharanagati. I urge you (and every other human on the planet) to do the same.

But many other factors aid to reach Jnana...

@Tezz Yeah. Jnana here refers direct and indirect. Indirect is via books and elders. But direct Jnana is best. You experience it and life teaches it.

@KeshavSrinivasan If one is surrendered through heart... then In my view there is no purpose of ritualistic Sharanagati... if he is not purified by heart then whatever rituals he do... it won't help...

@TheDestroyer And to be clear, I'm not opposed to meditation in general. I certainly think that meditation on the 32 Brahmavidyas can lead you to Jnana and thus Moksha.

@Tezz Indirect Jnana is not always trustworthy. Among these two, Direct is best. But as life is of limited lifespan, we learn indirect knowledge.

@Tezz Sri Vaishnavas believe the opposite, we believe that even a big sinner who has no love for Vishnu can perform Sharanagati, and then after Sharanagati Vishnu will purify his heart and fill his heart with Bhakti.

@Tezz It is definitely possible to commit sins after Sharanagati. Sri Vaishnavas believe that Vishnu will gradually transform your heart after Sharanagati, but people still have the ability to commit sins.

@Tezz @TheDestroyer By the way, this is related to a difference between Thenkalais and Vadakalais. Thenkalais believe that once you've performed Sharanagati you are no longer required to follow Dharma, but you should do so anyway to set an example for others. Vadakalais believe that Dharma is still obligatory after Sharanagati, and if you violate it then you'll be punished for it in this birth itself, but you'll still attain Moksha anyway.

@KeshavSrinivasan This is like a Puranic saying. Those who visits Kashi will definitely get Moksha (granted for sure but time may vary).

@TheDestroyer Well, in practice the attitude people generally adopt after Sharanagati is "I'm so grateful that Vishnu saved me from my sins, now I want to please him for the rest of my life."

@TheDestroyer I'm not sure when person performs Sharanagati and visits Varanasi one will get moksha or not... but I'm definitely sure one who performs Sharanagati by heart or reaches (Varana Nasi) (middle of eyebrow)... one will definitely be Liberated...

@Tezz There is actually a rare form of Sharanagati called Artha Prapatti where someone who is really eager to attain Paramapadam right this second requests instant death from Vishnu. Vishnu grants it only to extremely great devotees.

There's a very why good reason apart from Manavala Mamunigal, most Sri Vaishnava Acharyas don't perform Artha Prapatti. First of all, they want to help other follow the path of Sharanagati and attain Moksha, and second of all, they don't want to miss the opportunity to worship the divinely created Vishnu statues that are on Earth.

@Pandya "Is there any scope of Advaita in Vaishnavism?" Yes, of course. Vaishnavism is just the belief that Vishnu is supreme, it's compatible with any Vedantic philosophy. The early Advaitins all had Vishnu is their Ishta Devata, and even if you focus on philosophical Vaishnavism, i.e. belief in the Pancharatra Agamas, Adi Shankaracharya disagreed with the philosophy of Pancharatra Agamas, but other early Advaitins believed in Pancharatra.
