@Senseful it doesn't matter it just sucks spending time to make a fully correct answer for a user, and then not getting that, especially when the accepted one doesnt fully answer your question. Absoulitly nothing against you or @CajunLuke .

ya i feel bad. i think ill accept yours
sorry about that

@Senseful Please dont
@Senseful I did.... And mdutil doesn't wouldn't prevent you, it has an option to restart it

gah... i'll accept whatever gets the most upvotes in a day or so

@Senseful please keep @CajunLuke 's answer.

12:02 AM
sorry again and thanks for spending the time answering my quesiton

@Senseful no problem. im not trying to be a drama queen. just trying to help
@Senseful also, please do be aware (in case it doesn't solve your issue) that the md (can't remember the exact name) process will still be running and looking, just not indexing.

Anyone here?
I'm trying to help somebody with a 2006 MacBook. It has Snow Leopard installed, but it won't get past the blue screen after boot.
I've tried several reinstall CDs and neither of them to install. Now I'm trying to verify disk permissions and verify disk. Is anything else is obvious that I'm missing? He's tried all the support for steps over the phone.
@Jason? @Kyle?

1:50 AM
Weird. All my additional Xcode apps seem to have mysteriously disappeared...
sigh, here comes another 240 MB download.
Also, is it just my imagination, or is the starred messages' line spacing different?

2:04 AM
@moshe - blue screen is user level startup. Window server time. You should reboot to single-user mode and delete the file /var/db/. AppleSetupDone and make a new admin user. How recent it the last backup?
Phone support should have been all over that symptom - blue screen is easy to pinpoint the failure....

@TimothyMuellerHarder did you do the update, and install the additional packages?

2:21 AM
@bmike how do I reboot to single user mode?
@bmike the issue isn't backup, there aren't any. The idea is to get a working machine.

W00T a reason to use an animated GIF in an AD answer. :)

A: How to partially uncover bullet points in Keynote

Ian C.I figured out a way to do this. It isn't perfect. It's limited to being useful against solid colour backgrounds. If you're using a gradient background or a complex image this won't work. Add a mask in the form of a rectangle over top of each bullet point. You don't need to be super precise. Just...

2:50 AM
@jmlumpkin yeah, the additional packages are what mysteriously disappeared. Where are they supposed to go, anyway? I just have 'em in a folder in Applications, but is there anywhere that'll make them appear in the appropriate Xcode menu?

3:20 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder they go in /usr/bin
how did you install them?

8 hours later…
11:40 AM
@JasonSalaz When you open the dmg, there are a bunch of applications inside. No installers or anything.
I just dragged them to wherever seemed like a good place at the time. :P

12:04 PM
sounds like a strategy. (I didn't say a good strategy)

12:14 PM
@JasonSalaz these are the .apps, like instruments and the like
@TimothyMuellerHarder I was going to say ask a question (so I or one could answer), but looks like we already have it

A: In Xcode 4.3, where do I put the additional tools?

user18861 Find XCode.app and open it by 'Show package content' Drag and drop new development tool from downloaded .dmg to /Applications inside XCode Add yourself to 'Sharing & Permissions' of /Resources with rights to read/write Repeat step 3 for file /Resources/IDEHelperApps.plist Open file IDEHel...

That lets you put them in the actual menu. You can really place them anywhere, I think mine right now are just in /Applications.

12:28 PM
Wow, looks like I may break 4k very soon.

12:54 PM
I wanted to float an idea for a CW question. We're trying not to do too many of them, and they need to be interesting to a wide group of people to be worth doing, so I wanted feedback here. Additionally, they need to benefit from voting for the answers to get a sorted list. IMO this one fits the bill, but it all depends on what people here think as to whether I'll propose it or not. So here goes:
In recent years, many new users have started using Macs. This means that there might be software that long-time Mac users know well and use on a regular basis, but if it hasn't been updated or publicized recently, new switchers might not know about it.

Long-time Mac users, what software do you use on a regular basis that is

1) compatible with Lion (so it runs in a modern environment) but

2) not recently publicized or receiving a major update, so it might be off the radar screen of new users?
Any feedback?

1:44 PM
That seems to line up with the guidelines well. But, IMHO, the 'list of apps' CW's are some of the least successful. My main problem is that the voting is so high that, once the question has its phase of popularity and the initial gems are voted up, it's nearly impossible for a new app to make any kind of a dent in the existing apps (no matter how awesome it is).
That won't be as big of a problem with this question, since oldies-but-goodies don't pop up every day, but it could still be an issue in the form of someone coming a month later with a great app that just can't get exposure.

2:07 PM
I agree that it is hard for new entries to crack the list (although this lack of success seems to be a product of the questions success at getting people to weigh in on useful programs...), but the resulting lists are useful resources, even if latecomer entries have trouble generating enough votes to crack the list.

@DanielL Sounds great. Please post this question, I already have some answers I’d like to share!

@DanielL I have a few suggestions for things I would possibly answer with, but whie they would answer the Q nicely, they are probably too niche for anyone to get any benefit from. So I'm unsure on the Q as a whole, but will go with the majority

@DanielL Hmm - not so hot on the current wording - but the idea of asking people for their "desert island" software has some merit as a CW

Yeah. I’m using lots of obscure apps today I wish people had told me about sooner!

One problem is with the timing of the question.

2:17 PM
In general - any question that is targeted "for beginners" or "for experts" is something the SE long timers have a large aversion to. I wasn't around for that, but there was a lot of backlash against people asking or tagging things with respect to the skill level of the asker or the answerer

With the lack of Rosetta in Lion, that's just culled off the greatest chunk, because to run in Lion it needs to be Universal or Intel, which makes each answer limited to 4 years old (ish) max

It seems to me (and did to them) to just throw all that out and purify the question.
@daniel What sort of answers are you hoping to provide a place for them to arrive?
Let's optimize for answers - not so much dwell on the question for a bit and see where it leads us.
@NathanGreenstein This is the biggest downside of CW. Too many answers accumulate and strangle the idea. Then the barrier to entry becomes too high. Even if you want to, searching if your idea has been covered makes it offputting for latecomers to fix a wrong answer or make the question better over time.
2
They're fun for a short while while everyone rides the wave, but then we're left with something that buries content - most of it locked away on page 2 and deeper.

I don't like the idea. There, I said it ;) My major concern is that this question is too localized in time. Current outdated apps will make it to the top. Those answers will be outdated after a while. New software which will be added after a year and later has no chance to make it to the top even though it will be much more relevant at that time.
This concern is somewhat similar to what @NathanGreenstein is saying, but not exactly. The problem I see is actually the question because it does not simply ask for software, but for a software's relevance in time.

I read it as “What are some useful but obscure apps you use regularly?”, which is a great question which could lead to awesome answers. I wouldn’t base it on time too much. Just on (lack of) popularity.
“Useful hipster apps.”

I'd rather we do the work and ask - what's the best software for X - since each piece of "obscure but regularly used" software fills some need. Everyone can then participate on that needs discussion and how this obscure piece of software is the best.

2:25 PM
Hello all.

Hey.

I just made a spreadsheet containing the approximate points of everyone in levels 2 and three. It's interesting because of the 6 people in three, 4 are within 10 points of each other - it's a very close race.

@AdamDavis Hey - so good to see you here. You've made some awesome edits and answers lately.

I'm curious if people would be upset if I posted my estimates to meta or not.

@AdamDavis People, don't take this contest too serious!

2:27 PM
hehehe, too late!
I'm vacillating between really trying to get the ipad, and just letting it slide. It would take me a lot more work to get up there.

@AdamDavis Add me to your list - i'ma get my share on today. Been too busy to write my blog post that I've been cooking up to fulfill my link bait part of this contest.
(i say link bait in pure jest of course)
@MathiasBynens Hipster app - I nominate paper for iPad. vimeo.com/37254322
(too bad vimeo doesn't one box here)

It looks like there are only 3 (maybe four) more people that could make it into level 3 over the next four days.

I'd have expected more.
Are you assuming that there will be lots of posts coming up during the last days of the competition?
Because that's what I'm thinking. However, judging by the last few days I'd rather expect the opposite.
Getting valuable prizes makes people mad.

@AdamDavis Hmm - we've had peeps like @MathiasBynens make the cut in four days of participation here (if memory serves correct)

agreed with @gentmatt

2:37 PM
I wouldn't count out some more people that know their stuff giving it a go here this week.
I think many of us that live in the US are a bit spoiled at how easy it is to afford an iPad and when you travel say to India or China and see what a hard job is (it's not working at McDonalds) I'm amazed we don't have more people trying to qualify from places where an iPad is a lot more money compared to a month's salary.

It's quite possible people will turn in the effort and move up to 3. I know I'm only 2 shares and one post away, but I'm 4 points short of the top 5, so getting an iPad would require me to get another 40 upvotes on my top 35 posts, which is pretty iffy.
There are only 3 others that are as close as me to level three.

@bmike Five days, IIRC. Five very exhausting days.

I did the work of figuring it out so I could decide whether spending another several hours curating my existing posts or not.
I'm still undecided.
@MathiasBynens The weekends are terrible for votes, though.

@bmike It offends me how Apple usually does not adopt $ prices to the € currency. Especially in the past, they would just change the currency symbol - not the number - which made their hardware more expensive in Europe.

@AdamDavis Every day of the contest seems to be terrible for votes.

2:46 PM
@MathiasBynens True, true. I was surprised at how low voting activity seemed on this site. I don't think there's another site I've participated in where I had more than one post in a blue moon that didn't get at least one upvote, but here it's common.

I’ve given 219 upvotes since the contest started (according to the API: <http://thenewipadishere.com/api/userprogress/4408>). I bet this number is much smaller for the average contest participant.

Of course, that could just speak towards my (lack of) apple knowledge.

@gentmatt and when you try to be as creative as they are and buy a device in the US, you have to pay a massive amount of cash in order to import it. Guess where the extra money goes to?

@AdamDavis Go out. Take a look at the sky. Breath in the fresh air that surrounds you. Call your wife or girlfriend. Take her out for a walk.
@Michiel Yeah. It's really annoying :(

Hehehe. If I win this, it would go to my wife, and she's been encouraging me. "Oh, I'll watch the kids if you're going to work on the contest!"
That may not seem like a big deal, but we've got 6 kids, all boys, so she's pretty interested in the outcome.

2:48 PM
@AdamDavis Haha. Well, that's a low income per hour, though.

@MathiasBynens I can only imagine. It was clear you knew your stuff from the first two answers I saw.

@gentmatt at least Germany is one of the good countries. Your product releases are fairly close the the US release. We have to wait like 2 months in order to get a new products

@gentmatt Very low. But when it's a contest win, it doesn't seem the same as receiving a check and thinking, "Let's put this towards an iPad that we can't really justify." Whereas "time" is much more fluid, and it doesn't seem as expensive. In reality time is probably more valuable and should be guarded more carefully...

@Michiel Wow. I did not know that. Do you tend to get your devices abroad then?

@AdamDavis I wish I had such a wife :-)
@gentmatt It happens :-) Most of the times I go to Berlin or the Netherlands

2:50 PM
@Michiel Indeed. That's my experience.

@bmike where are you from?

@Michiel Mine would also say: "Here's a sandwich. Now go and kick some butt in that competition!"

When new product is released, actual working people get on planes and fly to the US to pick up product. Get here in the evening - shop - maybe hit two stores.

@Michiel She's a gem.

Sleep - get up and do it again. and then fly home. It depends on how hard the customs is on the return flight if they get nailed with import duties.

2:52 PM
@gentmatt Yeah, but you already are. Kicking butt, that is. You're well ahead of the other level three participants.

@Michiel I got my iPhone 4 in the UK, saved me lots of €. No taxes on the way to continental europe :)

@gentmatt Same for my iPhone 4S :-) It was a lovely weekend for me and my girlfriend :)

@Michiel It's in my profile :-) I live and work in Minnesota (minneapolis) but I get around and have friends around the globe.

@bmike Get rid of all the packaging, and put the new ipad into an old, worn ipad 2 case, and keep it on your carry-on. They'll assume you took it out and are simply bringing it back. Not that I encourage one to avoid declaring things, but...

@bmike Cool :-) citizen of the world, I like

2:54 PM
@AdamDavis Oh - you can ship back the empty boxes and declare them as books (the product manuals) and charging accessories / cables.

@AdamDavis Really? I hope that's true. :) In fact, I am still somewhat convinced that there are at least three other guys who might well overtake me - or have already.

@Michiel I need to get back to europe this summer. I'll ask all my peeps here for recommendations. Was hoping to make some of the apple conferences in Amsterdam this spring - UK / Ireland - but it wasn't in the cards. Perhaps next spring.

@bmike Ah, you are indeed wise! I take it for granted that I live in the US and everything is cheap...

@Michiel Global labor market!

@bmike I'm from Belgium... But no exiting Apple stuff happening over here :) We don't even have a real Store, just some lame ass Resellers

2:56 PM
@gentmatt 4 people would have to get 40+ more upvotes each to eclipse you, if you stood still, and the fifth person would need 70+ more upvotes to eclipse you.
@gentmatt I don't recommend you rest on your laurels, but you are sitting pretty.

@AdamDavis how do you calculate those things?

And then pack all the goods in a crappy business tote. Don't shower, drink a little too much, eat some garlic - be hungover so the customs doesn't want you in their sight and they have a good reason why you aren't talking.

This all asusming I'm counting things correctly, of course.

@AdamDavis You guys are so lucky. Lower taxes and cheaper hardware...

@Michiel Well - Apple is expanding GANGBUSTERS internationally. It does seem to take a long time to break into a country though with all the laws, hiring, etc... Once you get one store, you might as well have three to 5 for a country it seems.

2:57 PM
@gentmatt Yeah, but no "free" healthcare, and if you count what people pay additionally for healthcare then the taxes really aren't that much different.

How hard is it to travel within the EU though? I thought you could hop anywhere - buy freely, take a train. It's like me heading to chicago for the day or a night, no? (8 hour drive one way)

@gentmatt Europe sucks :) Except the healthcare indeed @AdamDavis :)

Not to mention our "special sales taxes" to support sports teams.

@bmike Is easy to travel around in the EU. The agreement which made this possible is called:
The Schengen Agreement is a treaty signed on 14 June 1985 near the town of Schengen in Luxembourg, between five of the ten member states of the European Economic Community. It was supplemented by the Convention implementing the Schengen Agreement 5 years later. Together these treaties created Europe's borderless Schengen Area, which operates very much like a single state for international travel with external border controls for travellers travelling in and out of the area, but with no internal border controls. The Schengen Agreements and the rules adopted under them were, for the EU me...

Anyway, have a good day, and happy contesting everyone!

2:59 PM
@bmike There are international trains or even a bus. Travelling by rail is rather expensive (in Western-Europe), but it's the most pleasant way of traveling (beside taking the plane) when you want to see some of the scenery

I'm contesting all of this! ;)

@AdamDavis ttyl

Whoa, hey, I just made it into level three! Rats, I was just convincing myself I should stop competing....
Anyway, I gotta go do real work.
ttyl

Most of my time in europe was in Spain and it was when the euro was still getting started, transitioning, so other than airports, my experience in europe proper is not so much.

I once took a train from Stuttgart to Munich, but most of the scenery I enjoyed was inside the train.

3:01 PM
@jaberg Ladies?

@gentmatt German ladies are hot :)

By all appearances.

@jaberg When you're looking, that's all that matters, no?

@AdamDavis mines done the same. im trying to win the iPod for her (don't need the iPad). Although I am making sure i hold my newborn as much as possible too :)

@Michiel German males like especially women from Sweden and France for some reason. At least this counts for the guys that I hang out with....

3:03 PM
A good friend is living in Sweden for a year - i hear no complaints about the locals.

@gentmatt Women from Sweden are of course the most beautiful women in Europe

They got so many blondes up there... it must be like heaven.

Indeed. There was also conversation involved. No reason to suspect anyone was other than they appeared. Three friends off for a weekend in the bigg(er) city. They were from elsewhere–off on a shopping/girls gone wildish weekend.

@Michiel signed.

Sweden is great, and then you go to Iceland.
But I've derailed the chat with my Rememberances.

3:05 PM
@gentmatt Blond, tall, beautiful and very feminine :-)

1) German soccer team 2) Swedish soccer team

@gentmatt I rest my case :)

The worst about the German soccer team is the font on their shirts. It's a comic sans like font that looks like a joke. You won't believe how that was discussed in the media..... :)

German number 5 is very upset with somebody. ;)

Anyway, supper now.... cya

3:14 PM
Laters.
2
Probably angry that the uniform designer never saw Helvetica. (Or at least wishes the designer had access to a ComicCrazy catalog.

Gotta go too, bye

4:01 PM
Do you guys know if an answer accept counts as an up vote? I know you get +15 if you're accepted and not up voted and a +10 and separate +5 if they up vote and accept your answer. But does that accept count as an up vote for the contest? I have a few accepted-but-zero and accepted-but-one answers -- should I beg the accepter for an up vote? :)

4:21 PM
@MathiasBynens Cool indicator. Where did you find out about that? I'm at about the same number of upvotes, BTW

@DanielL I’m a web developer :) Every time you view a profile on AD during the contest, it loads thenewipadishere.com/api/userprogress/[userid], which is then used to render the contest progress bars.

Amazingly cool.
I'm very much not a web developer, or any other kind of developer. Just an end user.

@DanielL It all happens in the browser, so it’s easy enough to figure out if you know how.

@gentmatt But of course, you’re far from an “average” user ;)

4:26 PM
Lol, I'm checking out how much everybody voted and 'exposing' the now:)
Let's start with the Level 3 guys.

I wonder what’s the lowest vote count for any participant in the contest.

I vote a lot.
2

But I should also cast more votes when thinking of the vote/rep ratio. At the moment I'm at about 20-25 per day.

4:32 PM
Woah, our friends named Adam vote very sparingly :)

@DanielL Wow.

I’m surprised at @stuffe and @jtbandes’s vote counts. Tactical decision? :)
(Nothing wrong with that.)

@MathiasBynens (thinking out loud)

@DanielL Did you vote a lot before you were a mod?

Stack Exchange’s Electorate badge taught me to reward every good question/answer with an upvote.
2
The system works.

4:36 PM
@MathiasBynens Absolutely! I vote a ton.
@KyleCronin Hello!

How's it over there on the other side of the country?

wouldn't know, haven't been outside yet
but it feels cold

:-) Sounds fun!

weather widget says 35

4:38 PM
I think.

it was mid-80s last week

@KyleCronin Out here as well.
The weather widget says 53º :-P
I need to go, since this computer isn't reliable enough. It just froze
That and I need to run Disk Utility on it

15 BOUNTIES!!!!!
Never seen that before on Ask Different.

indeed, I'm working on answering one myself

4:49 PM
Heh — the accepted answer is the only one without upvotes.

Q: How do I run VI with colors on Lion?

gusterlover6I'm looking to enable color syntax highlighting in vi. I just enabled colors in Terminal via here. Any ideas on how to enable this? NOTE: Usually on Linux when I open vi with vi file.txt and it opens in black and white on default, I can open the same file with vim file.txt and it will show the c...

@MathiasBynens +1 -- I try to vote a lot. Even in questions I've answered I'll up vote others. Really the contest shouldn't pit us against each other. You can have multiple people getting multiple up votes even if only one is getting accepted.
@MathiasBynens man, Janus is so much easier and nicer. :)

@IanC Heh, I didn’t really like it. It’s not for me… I’d rather start with a clean .vimrc and .vim directory, then only add the stuff I need.
(I’m talking about Janus, of course, not about your answer!)

@IanC Let the users know that there is a badge for upvoting competing answers!

@MathiasBynens Pardon me while I promote my own answer in the comments on yours. :)

4:54 PM
@MathiasBynens yea, but if the guy can't even turn syntax highlighting on, throwing him to the download-your-schemes wolves seems cruel. :)

@IanC Consider yourself pardoned!

@gentmatt yea, that's a good idea.
@MathiasBynens hehe. I JUST NEED UP VOTES NOW! :)

@gentmatt Heroes. Each and every single one of you.

I only wish that there were a golden badge as a continuation of the sportsmanship badge ;)
2

@gentmatt It's happened before.

4:57 PM
I'm killing it on answers, but still not getting enough up votes. Driving me nuts. 7 short of 35.

Does anyone know the etiquette for how long to let a bounty on an already-answered question sit?

@bmike Really?! Must have happened recently though, right?
@IanC I'll look through your answer now...
I know that you put lots of effort in difficult questions.

@gentmatt I feel so dirty grovling for up votes. :(
@gentmatt yea, that's hurting me. :)

You dirty boy!
:)

My twitter followers are hearing me beg.

5:04 PM
With respect to voting - I'm pleased that so many new users to the site are passing up the "usual people" by voting and hope that they are voting for all the good answers - and not just the person that referred them here. apple.stackexchange.com/users?tab=voters&filter=week
And, everyone that is working the contest - be sure you use this as a good excuse to shoot for the sportsmanship badge - apple.stackexchange.com/badges/58/sportsmanship - winning while helping your fellow users here would be a sweet award indeed.

@bmike I'm passing it out like CANDY!

@IanC Well - as long as no-one gets a sugar overdose. I'm not asking people to blindly vote either - just pick a level of quality you like and go out of your way to discover people that make good contributions here and make sure you spread the love.
The contest is a huge investment in us from the Stack budget - we really are getting to hand out real prizes by using the site - just keep in mind a little is good - a lot (or single purpose voting) will earn you a trip to the penalty box.

@bmike I'm not paying much attention to who gets it, it's going to good answers. I don't feel like I'm favouring anyone, but it'd be interesting to look at my voting stats by users who got votes from me for the last two weeks.

@IanC I love it - there are no worries then :-)
@IanC I'm not sure there's a way to do that with anonymous voting.

@MathiasBynens I have no idea where you dug that out, but in my opinion it is SUPER unhelpful to having any sanity in the closing stages

5:12 PM
@bmike i always thought it was pseduo-anonymous. Users can't see who voted for them, but the system knows (because I know where I voted when I see my stats).

@IanC Simply sharing a link to your question/answer is probably the best way to go about it. If people like it, they’ll upvote it even if you don’t ask them to. At least, it seems to work okay for me.

@MathiasBynens not so well for me. I don't think my followers have AD accounts and aren't willing to sign in for my benefit.

@MathiasBynens Not tactical. Check out my normal profile. I have only 277 all time over 7 months being on the site, and 77 of those are in the past 11 days or so, so I've actually upped my game.
I'm a low voter, I fit the voting profile on this site very well.

@stuffe wait, YOU'RE the type I complain about all the time. :)

And of course this is why they are super unhelpful stats to push around at this stage, because using half stats can make someone look bad.

5:17 PM
@stuffe No need to defend yourself, I was just guessing :) Nothing wrong with it anyhow. Everyone is free to use the site the way he/she wants to.

@IanC So - the system knows who voted everywhere so it can reverse things when it detects that one user votes exclusively or primarily for another. Even mods don't get to see who voted where - but do get some information when vote patterns arise so they can keep the voting from being abused.

@stuffe FTR, I didn’t mean to make anyone look bad… We were just having some fun checking out the numbers.

@daviesgeek More than even you :-) (I've actually slowed down a lot since becoming a mod)

I fully expect the people that have access to the details will check over the contest when it ends to be sure everything is on the up and up - but that's something the developers do - not the moderators.

@bmike I'm trying to recall what I saw when I was last a mod. Too long ago to remember. I could have sworn I could see voters on a Q or A. It was a beta site though...not sure if that makes a difference.
How is this not subjective?

@IanC Well - the system now doesn't show us mods who voted on any one question. Again - the tools are focused on users - not questions.

@IanC I am a product of the system. AD was the first SE site I used, and is still the only one I use more than slightly occasionally. I came, I saw, I fitted in.

Anyone care to help, check the comments. Is "line level" an analog signal term?

Anyhow - enough about that - how about some silly geek humor picking fun on bosses that don't get it...
You're holding it upside-down. http://thisisnthappiness.com/post/20078658414/dilbert
That link is SFW - but some of thisisnthappiness.com can be NSFW depending on how conservative your workplace is.

I'll amend the answer if i'm wrong

@MathiasBynens I know that, but the levels of introspection are getting pretty high now, and it's likely not going to end with a group hug.

@stuffe :')

you're still cool in my books.

Scrooge. :)
@binarybob "line level" is 100% an analog signal term. Digital signals don't have "levels" that require impedance matching so the term doesn't apply.
@stuffe meh. I'm at peace with these things. Like I said earlier: the only person I'm competing with is myself. I can either get myself to L3 or not. I don't feel like anyone is standing in my way on that and I certainly don't feel like my L3 achievement comes at the expense of anyone else achieving L3.
It's kind of odd to think of it as an inter-person competition IMO.
My answers don't get better or worse because other answers or better or worse. At least, they shouldn't! :)
@binarybob you should fix that. Some mic input jacks take a TOSLINK digital input as well as an anlog input.
I don't know who my up vote angel is but: thanks. :)

5:54 PM
@DanielL Understandably. I can try to understand what you guys have to do, but I don't think I know just how much you do. :-)

@DanielL moderation is a non-trivial amount of work. I've had a taste of it on other sites and know it's not for me.

6:18 PM
@binarybob i think it is, since optical would be transferring differently, almost implied line level.
@binarybob I think his comment was related to just saying its analog only, when the docs say that 'you can connect digital audio equipment'

@jmlumpkin @IanC Ok, thanks. How about I merge the 3rd bullet with the 2nd to make a analog/digital line in or mic?

@daviesgeek @IanC It's harder than I expected, I must admit, but I really value this community, and it's great to be able to contribute to it. That said, I'll value it a whole lot more once we're done with this stupid contest :-) (Well, I can call it a stupid contest, but I also really want to win)

7:00 PM
@DanielL Absolutely, I value it as well and I'm glad I can participate. And I feel somewhat the same about the "stupid" contest. ;-)

Stupid iPad!

7:25 PM
stuPad™
web-sniffer.net/… looks like it… The entire site is slow for me at the moment.

It's a sign for us to stop taking it so seriously ;)

@stuffe I mean Ask Different, not just the promo site.

Same difference ;)
Time out people. Go tell your families you love them :)

Shouldn’t we report this, or something?

What's happening?!?! :)
@MathiasBynens Yes.

7:38 PM
@gentmatt …where?

@stuffe Indeed.
Both sites are down for me.

@gentmatt Browsing works fine if you just disable JavaScript.
But without JavaScript, most of the interactive functionality falls apart.

Will try now.
Wow. What a difference!
@MathiasBynens It's back to normal (except for the contest website thenewipadishere.com)

7:54 PM
@binarybob that works.

@jmlumpkin Awesome, thanks!

good night guys!

8:11 PM
@gentmatt good 4:11 PM, gentmatt ;)
ok, good night.

@IanC Excellent. Thanks.

8:32 PM
Awww! I thought for sure I had this question down (I was going to recommend installing Choosy and making an Automator app for it) but I can't get Automator to accept a URL as input. :(

8:45 PM
Not even using 'get URLS from list'?

let me check.
@stuffe That's not showing up for me...
Do you mean "Get specified URLs"?

I could be mis-remembering it, yours sounds familar

@stuffe "Get specified URLs" means "pass a list of at least one pre-sepcified URL to the next item", and I need to get a URL as input. Apparently, when browsers receive a link, they aren't receiving a URL as text but rather some kind of link which Automator can't accept as text input.

Can you use extract data from text and pull the url out?

Good idea.
@stuffe Nope!

8:57 PM
@TimothyMuellerHarder AppleScript instead?

@IanC Can't make an AppleScript be a Choosy browser. I think… let me check.
