@bmike That's not hypothetical anymore.
There are more level 3 winners than prizes now.

@DanielL iPads are over won - that's for sure. Once you take those top 5 out, there are still plenty of iPod's to go around to all level 2 entrants.

right
Now that I'm done with the contest, here's a question that I've been wondering about for years...
0
Q: Do computers slow down as they age?

Daniel LI have an eMac I bought in 2004. I just used the system restore CD to re-install Panther, iLife '04, Internet Explorer for Mac(!), etc. I don't have any timed specs from "back then", so I can't answer this definitively, but the machine feels slower than I remember it feeling back in the good old ...

12:32 AM
OMG - it's @JasonSalaz

When's the last time you said something quippy and got on the star board to the right ->

@bmike I assume you are knowledgable about your answer, but I'm in shock that it could possibly be true.

Longer than I can see by turning my head to the right.
March 19th, talking about the fact that Amtrak serves alcohol.

That was a while ago

12:49 AM
doesn't feel like it ~_~

@DanielL Thanks!

@DanielL I'll expand on it - but I've run benchmarks on all sorts of failing machines whether they are macs of your vintage or even Control Data (CDC Cyber that were designed in the 70's and still powering electrical network control systems past the Y2K non-event.)
The CDC Cyber range of mainframe-class supercomputers were the primary products of Control Data Corporation (CDC) during the 1970s and 1980s. In their day, they were the computer architecture of choice for scientific and mathematically intensive computing. They were used for modeling fluid flow, material science stress analysis, electrochemical machining analysis, probabilistic analysis, energy and academic computing, radiation shielding modeling, and other applications. Models The Cyber line included five very different models of computer: * The 70 and 170 series based on the architectu...
Also - we ran IBM Risc computers once the CDC cybers were stopped making and in the electrical control systems business - those machines ran for 10, 12, 15 years. The stable ones would run for 5 to 8 years between reboots in most cases. Some wouldn't get rebooted until it was time to upgrade to new software on a 6 year cycle.

Q: What programs have trouble with case-sensitive (HSFX) or case-insensitive (HSF+) filesystems?

mankoffThere are some programs that require a case-sensitive filesystem, and others that require case-insensitive. Which programs have one of these requirements? I'm thinking this could be a community-wiki. If someone needs a case-sensitive filesystem, it would be good to know what programs won't work.

1:05 AM
@daviesgeek Did you finally get around your lack of social media dilemma?
Well, I guess you must have.

1:40 AM
@DanielL I did.

I really want the Medium size of this Threadless hoodie to go back in stock. Patience is a virtue, so they say... too bad I don't have it. :P

@TimothyMuellerHarder There's no explaining taste, I suppose.

@TimothyMuellerHarder That is so awesome.

See

2:13 AM
@stuffe I'm about to eat a crumpet, but I'm not quite sure what it is.

2:27 AM
@DanielL that was a really nice edit. thanks man.

3:02 AM
@IanC Your answer was almost there, but that was the one thing that often keeps it from working.

@IanC My email is in my profile, if anyone wants to discuss why they think I'm suspect. I'm not "out of nowhere", I'm an iOS developer who usually spends time at Stack Overflow (because it's for developers). Would I like an iPad? Sure, but I expect not to win one despite making level 3 - why not finish the task? I won't be downvoting anyone in an effort to stay on top, on the contrary.
Sorry not to find this SE just a tiny bit friendlier, I was under the impression the contest was supposed to attract new people (or bring them back in my case). Anyway I am going to get back to work now. The email is there is you have something to say.

@AdamEberbach Hi. We're usually a lot friendlier. The past week has brought out an uglier side of our site than we like to see here.
@AdamEberbach Some of your posts have been very very good. I've upvoted those. Some I haven't liked as much. I've downvoted a few.
I didn't like a few of your questions, but I certainly welcome the quality of others of your posts.

3:18 AM
@AdamEberbach Adam - only moderators can see the emails - and only when we specifically request it - it's not something that normal users can see. You would have to add it explicitly to the comments box for someone to know your email here.
@AdamEberbach See apple.stackexchange.com/users/13/kyle-cronin for an example of how to disclose an email to other users.

3:41 AM
@DanielL stuffe helped me.

3:53 AM
ah

4:15 AM
That was what the whole e-mail thing was about.

@AdamEberbach you give stuff away, it brings out all kinds of weird stuff. Some of your questions and answers were great, some were...well...no matter what, you rack up those kind of rep points that fast and of course the regulars around here will talk. That's just how it is.
@AdamEberbach while I believe you, you've got to admit that these two graphs can make a few curious.
One of those is not like the other.

5:02 AM
@DanielL :-)
@IanC Crazy growth!
you may have noticed that I edited an answer on a closed question. I apologize for this, as it was in the /review tab and I didn't realize it was a closed question.

5:23 AM
Ooh, just hit 10k!

5:37 AM
Huzzah! @kyle
I'm 8 tweets away from 5k
Why are round numbers fun?

@DanielL Nice question! I wonder why nobody has asked this before.
@KyleCronin Hurray!

Just noticed the contest progress tracker on @AdamEberbach’s profile says 19/20 shares even though he completed Level 3. Bug?
0
Q: Possible bug in the contest share count

Mathias BynensHere’s a screenshot from Adam’s profile (not that it matters who it’s from — this is just so you can reproduce the issue): Note that it says “19/20 shares”, even though level 3 is 100% complete. I assume that after completion of level 3, one of the questions/answers Adam shared got deleted or ...

@MathiasBynens We discussed that before. unshared links

@gentmatt Ah, whoops. I shouldn’t have posted that, then. What was the consensus? Bug or feature?

3
Q: Am I at Level 2 or not?

MosheMy progress bar shows that I've hit level 2. I've received a notice on the site. However, the number of shares and questions/answers with 2 up votes has gone down. I can understand the Q&A getting downvotes, but how can a link be unshared? Is something broken?

@MathiasBynens No real answer in this post.

@gentmatt I see. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/3919090#3919090 doesn’t really answer it either. Whew :)

6:40 AM
You could leave your question open. Hopefully, it will receive an answer.

2 hours later…
8:31 AM
@AdamEberbach No-one used the word suspicion. The phrase was that you "came out of nowhere", and refers to the fact that here in Chat we have been discussing our (and other participants progress) pretty much daily, noting and congratulating when levels are met etc, and at no point have we ever particularly talked about you specifically. So when you slip past the chat radar and into Level 3, that's when we notice you.
@AdamEberbach I checked out your profile for fun, you've not gone overboard on daft questions, you've answered a lot of fairly soft questions but then so have I and I would rather complain about an unsuitable question than the fact that people answer them.
Overall, I don't think anyone has an issue with your input to the competition so far, other than a generic "new guy canes the site for an iPad" issue that actually more a worry that the new users are not here for the site, but for the iPad, and that fear (for you and all the new guys) can only be assuaged post competition
Let's face it, a lot of the entrants are going to dissapear, we don't know which ones they will be yet, hopefully the number will be less than we fear it may be. But certainly anyone who goes (to use you as an example only because I can and not because this is necessarily an accurate prediction) from a couple of points over many many months to busting the rep cap (which is really hard to do) 5 days out of 8 cannot maintain that pace forever.
Also, generically, most people feel there way onto the site and gauge the audience. Voting and aceptance patterns differ here to a lot of other SE sites, and the competition has massively changed what I would consider to be average participation, both in terms of sheers amounts, Q&A styles and quality, and voting. The mass influx of new users who are setting the tone rather than following it is an area for keen observation, shall we say.
And that's it from me, speak later everyone :)

9:01 AM
z0Mg, 1337 rep!!1one!!!!eleven: i.imgur.com/Yb846.png

@AdamEberbach Actually, I'm not quite done :) As per your comment here, Email isn't an appropriate medium to conduct discussion. The whole point of it being here on Chat is that is it open for all to see, there is nothing hidden or clandestine about the process, and if we had discussed participants privately then apart from the obvious possibilities for conflicts of interest, you would not even have known your entry into L3 was being discussed.
@MathiasBynens Ha! Someone had 13337 the other week.

9:21 AM
@DanielL Feeling conflicted about this. Obviously I want to win one, also I feel I have worked hard enough to deserve to win one. But so have a lot of people, and even the new guys who have reached L3, have done so on the basis of proper upvotes etc, and are equally deserving and hardworking, at least during the contest dates which is all that matters.
@DanielL So while I will be upset if I or my regular pals on here don't win one, I am also aware that the new guys will feel equally upset if none of them win one and all the "regulars" do. Basically, it needs to be a mix if it is to be considered a fair outcome by all, so I hope the results reflects this in some way.
Someone has to miss out, and the losers (regulars or new guys) may well feel so dissapointed that the stated aims of the contest are reversed if people leave because of the result.

@stuffe Solution: more iPads!!1

You can't change the terms after people start. Besides, the kit is already bought and paid for.
I know this because I asked a question about choosing black/white, and if a winner could pay for an upgrade to a larger one, or gett an equivalent prize if they already owned what they won, but the reply was that they had already bought the stuff, and it was all in black.
I hope they got them engraved :)

9:41 AM
evening (so it is, locally)
So yes, I have a steep graph. I have put a lot of time into this in the last few days, probably too much.

@AdamEberbach It's not a problem, so long as you understand that such a meteoric rise will get you noticed.
Most people who are L3 have a similar curve for the past week

Definitely too much. I'm old for this if you really want to know - with 4 kids, including triplets, it is hard to put in the time. But when there's an iPod for eldest son, you do it.
So if feathers are ruffled I hope you will excuse my jumping in with both feet so to speak. For my part I understand it perfectly - who the fuck am I to come along and be number 6? Perfectly understandable.
I'm not here to get to the top of the tree alone. I love trivia competitions. If I ever face off against you in a pub I hope I embarrass you completely with my knowledge of 80's rock. But here it's a challenge and I engeg with the rest of you respectfully. I just don't want to be seen as the bad guy OK?

I think you ruffled your own a bit more than ours were, we're pretty relaxed about it, resigned in a way sometimes, but we've had the same discussion over many other entrants. No-one was picking up on you specifically that I detected
@AdamEberbach That bad guy is the guy who gets rep deducted and a temporary suspension for voting irregularities. You are quite the angel in comparison to some stuff I have seen this last week.

@stuffe Yeah, I was jk. I saw your thread on meta.

OK, well I am here to show I am just one normal guy, nothing sinister. I don't mind whatever way you guys vote in the next few days honestly. I set out to do a personal challenge and I made it. I will probably win an iPod and I will be extremely happy with that.

9:51 AM
@stuffe Are you referring to me? 'Cause I can perfectly explain the 'bad guy behavior'

And you clearly have the knowledge to answer, so I hope you put in a shift of 50 points a week or so even after it completes
@Michiel Not specifically, but actually I'm glad you're back in
You can imagine a lot of discussion took place!

@stuffe about me?

yeah I'll do it. After stack overflow, where I am frankly lost a lot of the time, here I feel I know stuff. Having just a bit of programming or battery charger construction knowledge helps.

And, for fairness, there have been multiple rep-deductions for voting irregularities, but you are the only suspension I saw.
@Michiel Yes, indirectly, we had a lengthy discussion about sock puppets, and conjecture on how I could perhaps (if I was evil) create a sock puppet account, and vote nonstop for 1 guy, resulting in him being suspended.
The guy who wrote the code took offence and assumed that we were accusing that of actually happening, when we were just making up scenarios as to what could happen

hm, and to be honest, I hated it to be suspended and was really counting the days
'cause a I was on a roll for the contest for starts and b, I really liked it answering that munch questions and gaining a lot of reputation
so I felt really really really bad while suspended

9:57 AM
There is also some discussion about votes not being "realtime" in the contest, once you hit the required number and claim Level 2 (for example) downvotes that leave you technically short still leave you in Level 2.

and I was the only one suspended, I'm wondering why...

If you don;t mind me laying out what we all saw and thought, please don;t take offence.
IS that OK?

of course
I'm happy to talk about it
2
since the last thing I want to be called is a cheater or a fraud

OK. This is just a timeline of information as we saw it, and isn't rully reflective of what went on behind the scenes
Firstly, you were the first to Level 1 - congrats.
Then as some point someone noted that you had been suspended, reason given was "voting irregularities"

Yeah, I was just lucky to be the first one. I had some easy points
everyone could have done that
but, please, go on. Sorry I uninterrupted

10:00 AM
Then later, your reputation went down by say approx 190 points, reason given "serial upvoting reversed"
So the obvious scenario that is given to mind, is that someone else voted for y ou lots and by lots 190 points could be between 19 and 38 votes (depending on the Q:A mix)
Due to this you were suspended. We don;t know of another user that was suspended, but presumably the person who did the actual voting was too, we don;t know, as you cannot vote for yourself.

(which I'll explain in a minute)

Due to the Level counting issue, it could be construed as you receiving a lot of votes that count in the competition, and while the repl was removed, the votes remain on the leaderboard

speaking of 80s rock, Adam Ant is actually performing Stand & Deliver on ABC2 as we speak. Yeah!

That in a nutshell is what we saw, based in the information we had to hand, and the discussions about potential sock puppeting and the unusual vote factoring of the competition where by in your case you have upvotes counting that came from rep that has since been removed
(but we also discussed how getting 6 upvotes then 2 down leaving with 4 would count to the 6 vote criteria, but getting 2 down then 6 up would not, even though the total was the same)
That's pretty much it from my standpoint

OK

10:05 AM
Obviously there is more behind the scenes, we would all like to know, so just really glad you want to talk about it and not hide

no sure!
can I ask you an honest question?

Of course

do you guys (the more regular users with a lot of reputations, you 'friends' as you call them earlier) think different of me?
'cause now I know my situation came across a lot of times, I'm afraid to ask questions or answer them because I think people will think like "oh, here he is, mister fraud. Lets leave him aside..."

I think a lot of people might have a preconception based purely on what we have at hand to judge with. But I wouldn't say it's set in stone. The fact that you came here once your suspension was up is a good sign, to me at least.

because, if you let me, I can explain the situation in depth

10:08 AM
Not me Michiel. It's easy to do something wrong, can be unintentional.

I'll be honest, you may have trouble during the remaining contest time to acheive votes, depends how many people get to catch up on this chat, it's a bad time for most stateside

No, I have given up the contest
but a week before my suspension, my colleagues and I were joking how cool it would be to win an iPad by just asking and answering questions
and I said "well, you know what you have to do, vote a lot for me. And if you win, I'll let you touch the iPad"
it was meant as a joke ('cause I'm well aware of the socket-detectors on stackexchange), but clearly, he didn't get that joke
and voted for me a lot
I wasn't even aware of his voting behavior, until I got the mail of the moderators
And my colleague got a message to, accusing him of being a sockpuppet
so, I slept him in the face and called him a stupid fool :)
and that's my story.

Cool
And he didn't get a suspension I presume?

yes he did, I guess
I wouldn't really know, since I had to work with a client in another town and I haven't seen him since

Just wondering. I would expect it, but it may not have happened, he may have just had a reversal of voting.
Well, that clears that up - and we have had another user in a similar situation, but not as many votes

10:13 AM
I'll ask him and let you know as soon as I do
nope, it was quite shocking for me too when I find out how many times he voted

@DavieGeek who is top 20 overall had a friend join and then go a bit overboard voting on his questions. He got a similar reversal, but I guess the numbers (about half yours) were not large enough for a suspension. I suppose they have an infraction scale for deciding on penalties.

but it was ab-so-lutely not my intention to cheat or fraud my reputation
So it's part my fault (I shouldn't have joked about voting for me) but largely my colleagues fault

This is sometimes a problem you don't personally cause. The first iOS app I wrote, my brother "did me a favour" and gave it a five star review on iTunes, forgetting that his surname is the same as mine. Best intentions, but...!

Well, I'm satisifed, as I said coming into Chat and bringing it up tactfully without brimming for a fight or being too defensive is a powerful persuasive tool.
My own advice is carry on with the comp.

Yes, and I would like to tell everyone my story, but unfortunately that's not an option.

10:17 AM
But be aware that your Q&As may have to be genuinely good to attract votes for a period.
I can star a message to appear on the right, and people can jump to that point and read it

I'll carry on answering questions like I did the week before the suspension, but I'm well aware of the prejudices some users will have

As I see it my part in the comp is done. The outcome depends on how others do now, my 35 counted inputs are set. I will vote for those I like and simply not vote when there's something I don't like. A short time left and best of luck to all.

@Michiel Bear in mind because of the odd way the votes stay counted even after being removed, you haven't actually lost any promotion points, just the rep behind them.

If my 35 inputs are voted down there is nothing to be done same as if they are voted up.

So if people are stingy for teh remainder, it's likely because they see if as an unfair leg-up

10:19 AM
I hope the contest is over soon, the tempers calm down and I can continue answering questions, which is what I like most
I'm happy to explain the situation to everyone who had prejudices or questions about my suspension

I starred a message - Adam if you would be so kind to star it too it will stay at the top.
Then everyone can get the horses mouth and stop conjecturing.

And since you are the only two present in the chat now, please be my guest to refer to this conversation or explain it like I toled you

which one stuff, I am new to chat
stuffe, sorry

OK - sorry, assumption
on the right are up to 10 recent starred messages
This is the one I just starred:
I'm happy to talk about it - 21m ago by Michiel

10:21 AM
Click the star next to it

Got it, it went yellow.

Great, the more stars a message gets, the longer is sticks around in the list

Ok, Stuffle and Adam, thank you so much for listening to my story and not judging me

no worries at all

Any time - we are actually pretty patient on the site as a whole, and certainly in chat.
Don't get many fights in here :)

10:24 AM
Ok, great :)
And about the contest, maybe I'll hit level 2, but definitively not level 3 (not enough time and, like you said, people will refuse to vote for me). So...
but, I'm not eager to win the contest

I think there will be an impact, but it won;t be huge, only a small percentage of voters ever come to Chat, most won't know the history

well look - this is my real name. Anyone can google me, look me up in the phone book, find my address. What I do here I expect to have meaning in the real world. So bear that in mind eh? I'm not actually looking for a way to fake moisture sensors, I am genuinely interested in how those things work. FWIW.

If your answers are genuinely good, they will still attract votes.

that's what I'm aiming for

Well, on behalf of the rest of the guys who aren;t here, thanks to you both for being considerate of everyones concerns and being man enough to put your head up above the parapet, am sure you will be judged appropriately :)

10:28 AM
Well guys, I have a new book on Jack Kirby that I was lucky to find for cheap. I expect to be up at 4am again just in case Apple WWDC tickets go on sale tomorrow am, so I going to go read a bit then hit the sack. See you round the site tomorrow then.
And cheers to you stuff, it's nice to talk a bit. I'm hesitant to put the head up as you say but it's worth it.
stuffe - I got it wrong again

@Michiel @gentmatt - look, another "stuffle", is the font to blame or something for all these extra 'l's!?!?

Is this like twitter where a '@' gets a message put in the stack exchange inbox?

@stuffe I'm not sure what you mean...
@AdamEberbach Jep :)

@AdamEberbach Yes, exactly that
@Michiel I was noting to some other users only yesterday how many people only on this site insert an extra character "l" into my username - most amusing

ok guys, that's it for me tonight. see you tomorrow.

10:32 AM
Bye

Haha, in my language it's also very common to put an extra "l" :)
Bye Adam, thanks again!

@Michiel Not from Germany by any chance?

Nope, Belgium :-
:)

Hmmm, dare I say "close"?

your neighbor ;-)

10:34 AM
@gentmatt does it a lot, he is from Germany and said something similar.

but I have to go to work now :)

Have a good day

you too
and thanks for listing to my story :)
bye

Hello everyone. I've got a problem: 2 answers with an equal amount of votes that I like equally on this question: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/46175/…
GlimmerBlocker and the hosts file. Hmm...
Which do you think I should choose?

If they are both equally acceptable, you can do one of 2 things.
Either accept the one that appeared first.
Or accept any, and provide a small bounty on the other.

10:42 AM
Hmm. This is the most fair-sounding and sensible idea yet. Plus, if any issues come up, I can blame them on this guy/girl in Chat named Stuffle. {yes, I saw the above conversation}

Seems reasonable :)

Dangit, it's still getting new views! Go away, viewers! Don't judge my decision!

You're just redirecting people to the question by talking about it :)

1 hour later…
12:06 PM
Kyle Cronin & Nathan Greenstein on March 28, 2012

Having waited in line for hours to buy the new iPad, I briskly walked out of the Apple Store past the outstretched line of people still waiting to get in, and to my car. I was excited – I was one of the very first people in the United States to own a new iPad!

Once I got back to my apartment, I took the plastic off the box and lifted the cover. The tight fit and air pressure made the separation of the cover with the rest of the box take longer than I would have liked, but it is a necessary byproduct of getting the packaging as compact as possible. With the cover off, I was greeted by the  …

12:30 PM
@AdamEberbach Hah! I have seen this a few times.

Good morning Ask Different.

@stuffe Suspensions are really not intended to be penalties. They do have that effect, but the main purpose is to give people a chance to cool off and to give the site a chance to fix things that are broken. They're designed to be rehabilitative, not punitive. If someone gets a suspension, that means they are a valued contributor to the community, because we wouldn't bother suspending someone we think is destructive.
If we think someone has bad intentions, we do have punitive measures we can take (and regularly do, with spam accounts), but they're designed to be invisible to cause minimal disruption to the positive functioning of the site.
On a completely different note, I wish I'd posted this as one of my contest posts:
14
Q: Do computers slow down as they age?

Daniel LI have an eMac I bought in 2004. I just used the system restore CD to re-install Panther, iLife '04, Internet Explorer for Mac(!), etc. I don't have any timed specs from "back then", so I can't answer this definitively, but the machine feels slower than I remember it feeling back in the good old ...

Of course my first post that doesn't count for the contest gets 14 votes.

1:03 PM
@jaberg Good morning

1:41 PM
@DanielL A good point. I think whether is is punishment or not is more in the eye of the beholder tho, and certainly just because you don't mean it to be doesn't mean it isn't. Not always, anway.
Either way, I think the previous dicsussions very most enlightening and useful, actually. Good to clear the air

@stuffe I have no doubt some people take it as punishment. I certainly would. I'm just trying to explain that there isn't a "sliding punishment scale". It's all about trying to fix things, not to exact retribution and make evildoers suffer :-)

1:58 PM
@DanielL Yeah, my last answer before it started was a corker that I am sad to have missed out on too - C'est la vie!

2:18 PM
since it was me you singled out earlier I'll say: I never said your rise was malicious.

Just that all those upvotes for small questions are way outside the norm for this site. You answer a question on a 0-2 question you're lucky if you get one upvote on the answer on this site.

@IanC "malicous" or "suspicious"?

@stuffe either. He seemed really appalled we'd talk about him so "malicious" fits. But "curious" is the correct word for us talking about him.

@IanC much of the last week is outside the norm for this site!

@DanielL I found voting habits, with the exception of a few noted people, were pretty much normal. Well, at least for my answers.

@IanC I think that he perhaps thought he was the only person being talked about, I can see how you might see some of teh chat and get defensive.
Soon came around to it tho, I've no major concerns - check his activity, only 6 questions, that's less than me, and none are below my quality criteria.
We can't complain if a user answers a lot of soft questions. They are there to be answered, it's the asker that I have more problem with

2:31 PM
no, but I can moan about my struggle to get two measly upvotes on questions where I'm the only and accepted answer, right? :)

He seemed to have find the secret around that curse on AD. I'd like to know how he broke it.

@DanielL Are the "contest posts" the first posts which we made to get to Level 3? All posts after that don't count for the contest? This is really confusing. :)

I maintain that we need to try to change the motivation behind a vote. It doesn't indicate a favorite/exceptional/best answer–a vote should be considered for any reasonable answer to question, particularly if it involved a little work on the part of the answering party. (One line answers, while often completely correct, face a higher bar in receiving a vote.)
Beyond that, softballs always get more attention than "tech" questions–in part I suspect because few people bother to read through long technical explanations and solutions fokr problems they're not having.

@gentmatt No exact definition, but the received wisdom is the first 35 that counted, not the last, or the best

@jaberg Very true.

Go GIMP, go!

2:39 PM
@stuffe Ok.

@jaberg The easier questions have easier answers that are more accessible to a greater audience. If people feel they understand and can appreciate the answer, they are more likely to vote. It's it's dead nerdy and rocket science, it matters not how amazing it is, if the audience cannot fathom it, they simply cannot, never mind will not vote.
@jaberg The GIMP has dried up of late. I think it needs lubricating

Um, isn't that what I said? ;)

Just don't pop up answers by another edit! ;)

You mean the photo of your daughter isn't pulling votes?

Yeah, slightly expanded. I wish y ou could link to an existing chat entry without the name call
@jaberg Not a one.

2:42 PM
Shocking
No action on my answer of late either. Question may have run it's course for the current community.

I think so.

A: How would I make a keyboard shortcut to *maximize* the current window?

LriI've assigned this AppleScript to ⌥+⌘+M with FastScripts: try tell application "Finder" to set {0, 0, dtw, dth} to bounds of window of desktop tell application (path to frontmost application as text) set bounds of window 1 to {0, 22, dtw, dth} end tell end try It always max...

I think at 31 votes, that's pretty much all of AD prior to contest ;)

This answer should get some upvotes.

Picked up four votes on that silly Retina Display def. yesterday though.

2:43 PM
It does not rely on third-party software.

@jaberg Which one was that?

11
A: What exactly is a retina display?

jabergRetina display is a marketing term invented by Apple; it means whatever they say it means. They have said in the keynote address for the iPhone 4 that it is a display in which, when viewed by an average person at an average viewing distance, individual pixels can not be discerned. While talk...

I was first, but someone managed to concoct screenshots ;)

Weird, an old one, did you share it?

I don't think so.

There is no point trying to understand the voting at present.

2:46 PM
Have to check my share log. I sure didn't share it yesterday though. Might have come up in chat—that seems to produce votes sometimes.

That is the next furore in waiting.
Mark my words.
1. Trivial edits to bounce high scoring answers
2. Masses of answer links in Chat.

I'm not trying to figure out voting. I'm not trying to better understand the contest. If I win a prize, great. But there is nothing I'm doing (beyond sharing links for levels I've achieved) to manipulate the end result.

@DanielL there you go:

A: When applications are code-signed, what parts of the .app bundle does the signature cover?

Ian C.It is largely up to the developer to decide which components in their application bundle are represented in the seal that gets signed before they deliver their application. Anything in the seal is effectively tamper-proof as it's mostly impossible to modify these things without changing their has...

If it comes down to that, I'm out of contention, because my honor is worth more than an iPad.

BTW: Have you guys also been affected by serial upvoting? I've had that a few days ago.

2:49 PM
@gentmatt No, but I did suggest it might happen the other day, and it was not taken well by the guy who wrote the competition code.

@gentmatt no. No one votes for my answers.

But I now know of 3 people who have had it.

I know that DaviesGeek had this once. But other than that I've heard nothing.

I've specifically asked my wife not to vote for my answers during the contest since she'd be coming from the same IP and...of course...she'd be a sweetie and vote for anything I said. :)

@stuffe Who else?

2:50 PM
Not effected here.

You, DaviesGeek, and Michiel
The latter had the rep removed

Daviesgeek got nailed because his boss joined the fray.

@IanC I've asked nobody to vote for me. In fact, none of my friends know what the stackexchange network is (I assume).

I have had 2 suspicious downvotes (curiously ones that stood at 6 points at the time, and were part of my contest votes), but only twice, so not exactly a serial downvote
@gentmatt I'm similar. The only people I have even talked to about this is my not-wife and you guys.
twitter shouts notwithstanding

(And maybe I shouldn't have used gentmatt to test my vote-a-matic script. ;) )

2:52 PM
@jaberg Lol.

@stuffe if my twitter followers are voting: good. That's how the broadcasting should work IMO.

Only - it would have really sucked if some serial upvoting by somebody that I don't know would have caused a temporary suspension...

@gentmatt ha! Vote-blocking by serial upvoting via a sock puppet -- that'd be some sick and twisted individual who resorted to that approach.
I'm getting a little frustrated. By all accounts I've had a stellar week -- but still falling short of Level 2 because of up votes. At this rate Level 3 will be unobtanium.

You still got five days!

@jaberg demo account. Nice. I never even thought of that.

2:57 PM
If it's true that the contest posts are only the first posts we made, I should take a day off now.

Been using that demo trick for a long time.

@jaberg I'm going to do that from here on it. Much easier than sanitizing the machine and I lock it down further too. Espeically nice for conference floors when I'm running demos in a loop.

Excusing the link (don;t worry, it's miles pre-contest and doesn;t count) but this is a fine example of a genuine problem, a (if I say so myself) decent answer, and AD levels of voting

A: Two Time Capsules in one network, Macbook connects to the slower one when backing up

stuffeYou don't explicitly state it, but is one of the APs extending the other, or are they both separate network IDs? If they are participating in what used to be called a WDS extended network, then it's tricky to tell it which one to use. But if you have them operating separate SSIDs, then you can ...

Ian, thanks for the reminder–I'd forgotten to up vote your answer to that Q despite the fact that I approve of it, use it, and linked to it from my own!

@stuffe man that's a great question and answer and stupid low voting. UP VOTES FOR YOU GUYS!

2:59 PM
@stuffe I agree. That's why I'm rewarding good and extended answers to my questions with bounties now.

I actually like stopping by chat to see what Q/A stuff you guys are talking about. I'll usually vist and spread a little vote love around.

I was pleased to at least get a late accept on that today.

@gentmatt I should do bounties....good idea.

@jaberg Demo trick?

Using a Demo account for giving presos so my horrible clown porn habit isn't revealed to the world.

3:00 PM
@stuffe he uses another account when giving a presentation or demo that's clean and already sanitized.

Whoops.

:D
Ok, I better go do the work I'm paid to do...later AD folks. Always fun hanging out here.

laters

@IanC Awesome! Thanks!

@DanielL That is a good answer, just the TL;DR would be enough :)

3:18 PM
@jaberg I sense a golden populist badge!

Q: How do you prepare or secure your Mac for the possibility of being stolen?

Dan SurfriderI'm using the great applicaton Prey which hopefully never has to get used, but just in case, I want to be prepared. So basically I have a request for password after sleep/screensaver enabled, but that would propably lead the thief into the direction of re-installing the OS X, all my data would b...

Is that a real thing?

Populist × 4 Highest scoring answer that outscored an accepted answer with score of more than 10 by more than 2x

Ah.

@jaberg No, it's not analog - purely digital. Those badges have no meaning in your real life.

I'm thinking of adding screenshots. ;)

3:24 PM
Should already qualify, yes?

I know it's digital, I just wondered if it actually existed. It does, or so you say. ;)

@jaberg You don't need more upvotes, the accepted answer needs more upvotes.
At least one.

Done

Badges continue to come as a surprise to me, I don't work towards them.

That is very elite company you're keeping right there.

3:25 PM
Well I could add screenshots to TJs answer. I have a picture of @stuffe's daughter here…

@stuffe How did this guy get that badge?
His answer must have been removed.

apple.stackexchange.com/questions/26858/… - Link removed - page not found :(

Badge has been added. I want to thank all the members of the academy…

No, bmike deleted the question (which also deleted the answers).
@jaberg No prob. Take it with pride!

Populist vote for smarm. Nice.

3:28 PM
I might get a populist badge for this question, but it's unlikely:

Q: What do I do with an old, dead iPod?

Daniel LI have a third generation iPod classic from 2005 (20GB). Nothing catastrophic has happened to it, but it has sat in a box in the basement for the past two years. When it went into the box, it worked, but now when I push the power button, nothing happens. When I plug it in to a charger (even when ...

@gentmatt So how did you get to that?
I predict a top ten all time before the weekend. About 200 points should do it.

@stuffe At 10k you get moderator privileges which enables you to see deleted answers.

@gentmatt One day, one day...
2

The correct wording is "access to moderator tools" apple.stackexchange.com/privileges/moderator-tools

@gentmatt up voted -- now you're only 1 away, right?
How smart is Time Machine?

Q: Will Time Machine backup portions of my file system that come from mounted drives?

Ian C.If I use the mount command to place some portion of a remote drive (or even a locally-attached drive that just isn't my primary drive) in to my main file system on my primary, Time Machine-protected, hard drive will Time Machine traverse in to the mounted portion and back that up or does it stop ...

3:34 PM
@IanC I need 23 while the other one needs 11. ;)
@IanC Good question! Please seperate that loooong sentence into several smaller onces. I had to read it several times to understand :)

@gentmatt Wow, someone got happy with MS Paint rather than Preview!

@stuffe I see that quite often on meta.stackoverflow. Windows users.....

Mmmm "anonymous feedback stats"

They just have no taste....

3:54 PM
@gentmatt better? I restated it. Gave a mount example.
w00t! Level 2 obtained. Thank you to anyone who gave me some upvotes.
@stuffe ha! Before Skitch my marked up screen caps looked like that b/c I used Pixelmator to mark them up.

@IanC Much better.

Mr. @Stuffe would prefer that you use the GIMP for such operations. ;)

@jaberg I don't touch X Windows any more. And that's a good thing.

@IanC I believe that your question should work external disks mounted in `/Volumes/.

Me either, if at all possible though I confess I'm keeping the GIMP around for now, it's better than it used to be,

3:58 PM

@gentmatt actually, /Volumes is excluded.
@jaberg Pixelmator meets my needs now.

Why then can I remove a partition from the 'excluded' items?

Pixelmator is my primary too.
