12:39 AM
Troubleshooting my computer audio. 98% chance it'll be solved with a reboot, but I kind of don't want to go through the effort of doing that.
Though at this point, the total work I've put into as taken way longer than a reboot would have.
But who likes efficiency?

@KyleCronin I try not to think of it relative to others, but set some personal goals for my own rep. I'd like to hit 10k this year. For no other reason than...it's a goal.
Generally, what are you guys using for external storage that's got redundancy? I'm goign to pass my frist gen Drobo on to my dad and was looking around and new storage options. I need about 3/4 TB. Fast enough for multi-tracking audio. @bmike you should get a kick out of me ditching the Drobo. :)

lol
This is, of course, "Does the iPad (2012, 3rd generation) have the most pixels of any tablet's display?"

1:39 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder What's audio problem?

1:52 AM
@jaberg No sound is being produced. Doesn't matter where the sound is coming from or going to.

@TimothyMuellerHarder What Mac?

@jaberg 2009 17-inch unibody MBP
It started in the middle of a song I was listening to, too... :(

Does the Sound preferences pane think you have a set of headphones plugged in?

@jaberg Yes, but it doesn't matter whether they're plugged in or what the output is set to.

I meant did it think they were plugged in when they weren't, but I think we're past that…

1:59 AM
No, it doesn't.

What's the output set to in Audio Midi Setup?

Checked that, everything looks OK there.

44100/2ch-24?

I'm currently away from the non-virtual keyboard, so I couldn't say. ;)

Gotcha. Well my only other thought is to ask if you're running an app that intercepts/redirects the sound. :)

2:03 AM
Considering I haven't gotten around to installing Soundflower or LineIn yet, and that it happened spontaneously, I think that is somewhat unlikely.
Again, a reboot will almost certainly solve it, but it's kind of curious,

@TimothyMuellerHarder Well you have me curious. What do you do to that poor Mac? ;)

Haha, nothing too far out of the ordinary...
Things open at the time that could conceivably have had something to do with it: Flash in Chromium (idle), Bowtie (beta), Spotify (playing), iTunes (idle), and that's all I can think of.
@jaberg (forgot to "at" you)

@TimothyMuellerHarder Well, I'm out of ideas for remote support. Keep us posted if you learn anything more—always looking to add to my toolbox.

@jaberg Sure thing! Thanks for the tips, though mostly redundant. ;)

@IanC When people know what they get - I'm happy they save $$ - it's just not something I end up recommending ever. But I'm not recommending to people that are light home users. I do get a kick out of anyone that learns about storage and has a good basic understanding of what and why

2:15 AM
Hypothetically, if I ask a Jeopardy! question and someone answers it before me, what should I do?
2

@TimothyMuellerHarder I like to wait a day before answering - when others answer - sometimes it's better to just let things lie - maybe edit it a day after you accept (assuming the answer was correct)

@TimothyMuellerHarder Accept the best answer. And next time have your answer ready to be pasted in immediately. ;)

or that works cc/ @jaberg

And I agree with @bmike about waiting a day or so. Don't assume you already have the best answer. (And don't assume that the first correct answer is going to be the best)

@jaberg It can be useful to wait to answer to garner attention before it disappears off the Unanswered list.

2:18 AM
I agree too, wait some time. And was just about to post that - don't assume you have the best answer.
I personally don't like the whole concept of asking a question and posting your own answer just to get points on here.

Well I'm glad it's unanimous!

Another artifact of the contest (or maybe I'm just hyper-sensitized) is that a number of the folks piling on so-so questions are very quick to hit accept.

@jmlumpkin I've found that asking and answering is very very unlikely to get many points.

@TimothyMuellerHarder In that case "accept the best answer" applies.

I hope everyone is down voting the so-so questions, commenting to get better ones, and editing them into shape if possible. I've done more down voting today than in a long time.
3

2:20 AM
@jmlumpkin Theoretically, the point of that is to provide a useful information source rather than to gain reputation. Not to say it's always used that way, but still.

There also is more good to up vote so it's not at all a bad thing...

@bmike Trying. But it's exhausting. And I'm reluctant to put the effort into teaching users who I don't think will be here three weeks from now.

@bmike Im glad to hear that. I've seen a few people do it to game their points, just not for me. Though, I have very well answered my own question, from either thinking about it more, and then know it has helped others.

@jaberg Don't exhaust - just do whatever part you feel is a good, honest try - let the rest fall where they land.

@jmlumpkin Answering one's own question and creating "Jepoardy questions" are both allowed and encouraged—but I think you always have to be open to accepting an answer that is better than your own.

2:22 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder I had that happen, and the posted answer was much better than the one I was about to post.

If the 30 people that are on here regularly all do an extra ten votes a day - that's a lot of shaping things for the better

@TimothyMuellerHarder Totally agree with it, but can be easily used both ways.

@bmike Where'd you get 30? Just wondering.

@bmike Well for better or worse, I maxed out on votes yesterday. And also capped out on rep, though as I review the latter I ask myself why, Lord, oh why.

@jaberg Oh I know allowed, and I guess encouraged (ive never really read anything along those lines, but I can see that). What I guess I am trying to say, espc with points behind it (a score), and even right now here a 'prize', there are still plenty of people that would 'abuse' that

2:25 AM
@jmlumpkin Yes, the contest presents some challenges to quality and community.

@TimothyMuellerHarder seat of the pants
I never see more than 6 or seven icons in the roster
and for any 3 days - the 5 people seem to shift a bit.

@jaberg yeah. I don't think it happens much, but man, its sad to see when it does.

@jmlumpkin There were some links to meta or SO Blog posts about Jeopardy questions the day before yesterday. I don't have them on tap, but the transcript should reveal them.

it's nothing precise or even accurate. Probably a whole lot more than 30 - but +300 votes a day would be a serious uptick for the site in general.

@bmike I was trying to remember the old axiom about a 100% certified seat of the pants guess--or something like that.

2:29 AM
@jaberg ill check it out at some point. I guess im sounding like an old man. The 'gaming' aspect that SE/SO has moved towards so hard recently annoys me. Its SO bad on Programers.se and SO.

Crimineys. 30 points for an "answer" that does no more than cite and link to Apple's official statement on iTunes Store billing. I sure hope it solved a real problem for someone.

Am I missing something? When does the iPad contest end?

@jmlumpkin Join me anytime, here in Curmudgeon's Corner

It's in the rules at the bottom. April 4 or so
April 2.
"Dates: The contest lasts for 3 weeks, from Friday 3/16/2012 at 0:00 until Monday 4/2/2012 at 23:59 UTC. All questions and answers must be posted and shared within that time period in order to count."

@TimothyMuellerHarder oh hah, the big 'contest rules' button

2:33 AM
@jmlumpkin I missed it too, until it was pointed out to me! :D
It must have some sort of invisiblity cloak
Or the schwa effect, for a slightly more obscure literary reference.

Well I'm in the drawing. My G+ Krewe came through. Won't post any more links until my Q/A numbers warrant it.

@jaberg Yah - that would be a great low noise place to seed a few links

Level Two looks promising though—without completely selling (what's left of my) soul at the crossroads.

I've decided to go to bed at a much more reasonable time tonight, so good night all!

@TimothyMuellerHarder rest up - see you tomorrow?

2:36 AM
1:30 is really too late for getting up at 6:00. :B
@bmike In all likelihood, yes.

@bmike I was pleased to learn that there were still people there. I'm assuming at least 5, though I wouldn't put it past one of my followers to link using multiple IPs. (I did not suggest it, but he's capable of doing so on his own.)

@jaberg Sell it, baby! There's always sea buckthorn seed oil - i hear it also cures online sold selling and improves question quality by 105% amazon.com/Sea-Buckthorn-Certified-Organic-1-Ounce/dp/…

@TimothyMuellerHarder You're right. Better power through. Cafe Cubano and Truckers Pills will be your breakfast.

may provide. Love it.
Sea Buckthorn oil may make you rich, and irresistible to twenty-something supermodels.

2:40 AM
i think if you lather enough on - the radiation from your device may reflect more off your skin.
@jaberg Oh - you need the beauty formula for model attraction.
It's size 10, too...
(ok - I'm done being silly until after I eat some food)

It may have some application: best applied before bed.
And that's all I'm saying' on that.

3:22 AM
@bmike I was going to buy a current gen Drobo but now I'm not sure I want to spend that much money. :) I could get by with 2 RAID drives in R1 config. Plus: I think I want FW for the sustained throughput.

3:47 AM
@stuffe So true!!!
@DanielL What was that?

Apparently a post I started writing a long time ago and have no idea what it is.

:-)

4:02 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder I changed your question from BTT to BetterTouchTool
Same with the tags

4:15 AM
An improvement.
@daviesgeek You're making some good edits.

@DanielL What does the topic have to do with the body of the question?

Hmmmm....

Hello everyone.

@bmike Interesting, but it could just be routine.
Maybe installing "patches" for lessons learned from iPad 3 orders. ;)
@Mahnax Hello. And at least from me, good night. I'm off to dreamland.

@jaberg Enjoy your sleep.

I like tuesdays

4:39 AM
I don't have to work tomorrow, so I like this particular Tuesday.
Especially because Tuesday gets really busy and that's never fun.

@DanielL Thanks! And thanks to those who have told me about it.

user19161
@Mahnax Boo!

@WillHunting Hi there, whatcha doing here?

user19161
@Mahnax I was coughing and could not sleep again. Anyway I saw you here so I decided to pop in!

@jaberg Nothing whatsoever. That's a terrible typo.

4:44 AM
@WillHunting Ah, that again. A right shame.

user19161
The colours in this room are very nice.

I agree.

@DanielL Your new topic makes sense, at least as it relates to the question.

I like the whole Apple.SE theme.

user19161
If I ever get a new computer with OS I would consider Mac.

4:45 AM
Yay!

user19161
Does Apple have Microsoft Office equivalent?

Yep.
There's even Office for Mac.

@WillHunting It's called Microsoft Office for Macintosh

user19161
I mean that is not Microsoft Office.

Open Office. Libre Office.

4:47 AM
There's Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

user19161
@Mahnax It is commercial ware too?

Text Edit. All the Word normal people need.

@WillHunting What do you mean?

user19161
@Mahnax I mean you pay for it too?

@WillHunting Yeah, but it's fairly cheap.

user19161
4:48 AM
@jaberg Haha, I certainly hope that is not just a text editor!

@WillHunting No, it does formatting too.

@WillHunting A little more than that.

5:02 AM
Thanks, whoever upvoted my question
@DanielL 'nother edit

@daviesgeek How many edits are you at?

@Mahnax 1.1K
Something like that.

@daviesgeek Holy smurf.

1141 edits.
@Mahnax :-)

I'm only at ~400 on EL&U, but it's harder to find questions to edit.

5:04 AM
I saw.

Slowly working my way towards Copy Editor.
Then I will have 3 golds!

In my early days as an editor (past 2K rep), I made many, many minor edits

You could say that :-)

Which I probably shouldn't have done...

You could say that too :-)

5:05 AM
@DanielL How's my latest edit?

I am really sad that my highest-voted answer on all of SE didn't even let me earn any rep.

Well, it's accurate, but I sort of thought it was implied. Probably helpful. Obviously I wouldn't have made it, since I didn't make when I edited the same post about 30-seconds earlier. But it does make the question clearer.

I should have put "programmatically"
Can I change it to that instead?

That would have been even better, but don't change it now.
Did you know that a post automatically becomes Community Wiki after too many edits?

Ok, I'll change it tomorrow.
@DanielL Really?

5:08 AM
That's one reason minor edits are discouraged

How's that happen? What are the rules?

Let me see if I can find it.
Ten edits or five different users editing the post

@DanielL Where's that from? (so I can refer back to it)

Q: What are "Community Wiki" posts?

Justin StandardSome questions and answers are marked Community Wiki and are owned by a Community Wiki user. Why have Community Wiki posts? How do Community Wiki posts work? How does a post become a Community Wiki post? How can the Community Wiki status be removed from a post? Return to FAQ Index

The point is to jump in and edit if you're going to make a substantial improvement to a post. Too many trivial edits to a post and the poster can't get any reputation from it.

Can a post be reverted? In other words, can you revert a post that has been made CW back to a normal question?

The system is in place partly to prevent abuses of people trying to do this: meta.apple.stackexchange.com/a/656/9388

@DanielL LOL

Teehee.

@daviesgeek In rare circumstances, moderators can request that it be done, but it's on a case-by-case basis, and the norm is that it shouldn't happen.

@DanielL That was way back. :-)

5:14 AM
I know.
But it answered your question. Added bonus that it was you who posted it.

Yes.
IIRC, I had a question that disappeared below the fold that I knew could be answered.
So, I was trying to figure out how to bump it again.

You can get away with bumping your post by editing it a few times, but if you do it too much, it's like the TILT error in pinball. Game over, as far as reputation goes.

I kind of dislike asking questions on Apple.SE.

Good to know.
@Mahnax Why?

@daviesgeek Well, they don't really get answered.

5:15 AM
@Mahnax Ask Different, BTW, not Apple.SE. Good thing Kyle's not around tonight either.
;-)

@daviesgeek The URL is apple.stackexchange.com, which is Apple.SE.

Or just plain AD

The url is also askdifferent.com

@Mahnax True, but the name is Ask Different

@DanielL …which redirects to apple.stackexchange.com
@daviesgeek Oh well.

5:17 AM

I suppose if I want more of my questions answered, I could actually participate here.

@Mahnax True.
So, contrast AD to something else like Christianity:

@Mahnax This is an ongoing battle

It's actually called Christianity

@DanielL I see.

5:18 AM
@DanielL Oh yeah, I remember that
Hey, I gotta get some sleep.
Talk to y'all later!

Okay, bye!

The community consensus is pretty strong that the name is Ask Different. The people who run the servers that host the site... not as consistent.

I see.

user19161
@Mahnax There is a question which must be nuked on ELU. I'll see there in the other room!

@WillHunting Okay.

6 hours later…
11:19 AM
Anyone object to using iPad "3" to refer to the new iPad?

11:31 AM
Context?

When talking about the new iPad.
In questions on Stack Exchange.

Are you meaning referringto it in prose or a tag?

I don't think it matters at alll so long as you are clear in your text. Tagging is another matter, and up for debate in Meta
I don't see the problem in the question tho, but that's an aside ;)

I know is the tag to use, and that makes sense. In prose, IMO, it makes sense to put the 3 in quotes, because it isn't technically the name.

11:41 AM
The key is legibility. You can call it an iPad Three for me, you won't be scored on letter of the law accuracy

@stuffe All of a sudden, people are being really picky about whether questions pose problems to be solved. I've asked plenty of questions in the past like "what are the advantages and disadvantages to updating iOS via iTunes versus the Settings app,” and they've gotten upvotes and haven't been closed. Why is everyone saying now that they need to have problems in them?

Just a discussion point, the large number of new questions has raised the issue of what constitutes a question and the relative quality of questions is just a hot topic.
But don't take it too seriously, and certainly not personally. You'll see the ";)" I put after my comment, and I haven't voted it down either.

As far as I'm concerned, defining a "question" shouldn't be the issue here; just opinion as to whether it's a good question.
@stuffe Point taken.

@TimothyMuellerHarder If I was being picky, to improve you question I would expand it's context to a wider scope. Not simply "how fast does it boot in your experience" but "what is it's startup/shutdown performance when compared against older iPads or other iOS devices" this should both answer your question as it stands, and also provide a breadth of useful knowledge to apply that answer against, so when the next question comes in "which is faster?" it's already there

That's a good idea, I'll edit it.

11:51 AM
I am sure you are aware of the phrase "monkey see monkey do"
When a new user (of which we are seeing a lot, at least anecdotally, be interesting to see a stat breakdown when the dust settles) sees a lot of fairly narrow questions like that, they are more likely to ask similar.

Unrelated: in the contest, it says shared posts need to be clicked X times to count. On my user page in the contest progress bars, does it only show which shared posts have been clicked X times, or clicked once, or what?

The FAQ and guidelines etc are all great, but the primary directive for a new user in their mind will be to "fit in" and ask questions similar to what is already in use.

@stuffe good point.

So the more established users have a duty of care to provide direction by asking the best questions where we can.
2
@TimothyMuellerHarder Needs 5 clicks before it shows as a shared post.
You can share 20, but if only 2 gain 5 clicks, you only score 2.
The wording could be clearer - "5 unique clicks"
@TimothyMuellerHarder At the risk of taking Rep away from @KyleCronin I would unaccept that answer, for the following 2 reasons:
1) It's not quite answering the same question any more,

I'm OK with that

11:57 AM
2) People have a tendency to stop answering once an accept goes up. You may get more answers covering more devices if you leave the points "up for grabs"
You can go back ans reaccept later on the basis of the best answer at the time.

@KyleCronin thanks for approval :)
AFK for a moment, rebooting iPad

@TimothyMuellerHarder Be good to define "boot", as something similar to what Kyle had originally, "from first pressing the lock button to being able to swipe to unlock" or similar, to get consistent answers.

@stuffe Done.

And done

Nice. Should "iPad (2nd Generation)" be edited to "iPad 2"? For the other two iPads, they're both just technically called "iPad", but the 2nd gen is technically called "iPad 2”.
Just a thought.

12:11 PM
Take you pick, I did it like that purely because it was less keystrokes to copy and paste and ammend 1 character ;)

maybe "iPad 2 (2nd generation)"

Enter the rabbit hole....!
How about iPad 2 (2nd Generation) Wifi and iPad 2 (2nd Generation) Wifi + 3G
Presume those extra chips require attention during boot....

Ooh! And "iPad 2 (2nd Generation) Black Wi-Fi and 3G", etc.!
Who knows if colors affect the time?

Black could absorb more heat, resulting in a potentially slower boot process as the gaps in the transisters become ever so slightly wider...

There's some question I distinctly remember answering, about heat/speed correlations... must have been deleted.

12:31 PM
@TimothyMuellerHarder I don't think we should use the new-ipad tag. It's going to be outdated next year.
@TimothyMuellerHarder If one really wants to refer to a specific model, it makes more sense to talk of the iPad 3rd generation.

@gentmatt Maybe it will be like the Pont Neuf in Paris.
400 years from now we'll still be calling that model the "new iPad"

...which will be preceded by the "super new iPad"
...or "latest iPad"
...or "actually new iPad" ;)

just don't hold your breath for the GNU iPad.
Hi @Stuffe

"Yo" as the cool kids say.
Or said.
It's probably not cool any more.

:-)

12:46 PM
I think even the word cool in considered seriously "uncool"

agreed.

How about gnarly?
Are the young whippersnappers still using that one?

Never took off over the pond
Thank goodness.

A: What's the startup/reboot time for iPad (3rd generation) compared to other iOS devices?

Kyle CroniniOS device boot times (timed using a second hand): iPad (3rd gen.) iOS5 32 seconds iPad 2 (2nd gen.) No Results iPad (1st gen.) iOS5 50 seconds iPhone 4S iOS5 42 seconds iPhone 4 iOS5 49 seconds iPhone 4 (GSM) iOS5 46 seconds iPhone 3GS...

I took the opportunity to nerd out apple.stackexchange.com/a/44646/9495 on an answered question, mainly on the basis tht it was too long for the comment it started out as

12:48 PM
Should we make the question more general?
Like: "What are the startup times for iOS devices?" @TimothyMuellerHarder

That will soon be the most edited Q & A ever ;)

@stuffe Ah. It did start as a comment. I see.

@stuffe We don't hit the CW edit switch much - perhaps there soon.

Yeah, there are a lot of more edits to come in the future.

@gentmatt I'd say put that as the first sentence of the question - leave the real title alone unless it needs to change...

12:50 PM
We're still a ways from auto-CW threshold.

@bmike If I'm going to leave the title alone, then I'll not edit anything ;)

(five different editors, or ten edits from one editor)

(although if there were an edit needed - it would be better to reverse them - general for the real title - specific for the lede) but that's more a matter of taste and opinion - neither is wrong

@DanielL "So, to make this a valid answer, the benefit is to know accurately the size of the drive you bought, and not have it magically shrink when you use it."

@stuffe I think that does not matter. The calculation is the same - regardless of the formatting.

12:52 PM
check. And flag removed

@gentmatt Yeah, I make that point, they are the same, just different units of measurements, but most people don't know and shouldn't have to know, so having the size on the box match the size in Disk Utility is a nice thing which prevents angst and lowers cholesterol

That's why I like apple. Always thinking of the customer.
Haha. Nice last edit @stuffe
I remember buying my fist Mac: 160GB hard disk. I thought that they tricked me...

An Apple a day, and all that ;)

Wow, I just took another look at the boot times list: iPhone 3G iOS4.3 87 seconds
That's really long!

Most improved question of the day award ;)

12:59 PM
We should (not) make another question for devices running OSX.
When we take into account all the different CPUs and hard-disks... The list will be super long :)

Yeah, not possible, a non-jailbroken phone should within reason be identical on boot, as you cannot change the boot process with third party apps and kernel extentions and all that. No-one will have a stock OS practically, which makes measuring futile even before you consider the hardware spectrum
Depending on at which point the control is passed to the user (on the basis that assumed speed is a better measure than actual speed, and you can for example happily allow the user to enter his passcode and assume it;s booted when you are still firing up Wifi and Bluetooth in the background) there should be practically no way other than system settings for options like Wifi to affect the process

@TimothyMuellerHarder I know that post. None of the answers support using the tag new-ipad.

I guess you're right, according to consensus, but the question is really about the third iPad specifically.

Well, it's your question. I'll leave it up to you. :)
@stuffe @jaberg Do you remember how we talked yesterday about adding pictures to answers for getting votes? Well this is the ultimate example :)

A: Must I download Xcode with the same Apple ID that I'm submitting with?

CoyoteYou don't have to download Xcode with the same ID as the one used to submit applications to Apple. They are distinct IDs. The Apple developer ID is in no way linked to the app store consumer ID (Apple ID). And you cannot use the Apple Developer ID on the App Store or the Apple ID on the Develop...

1:21 PM
Needs an Xcode icon. I may edit one in ;)

@stuffe what about the Apple logo and giving time to the other places where apple id gets used?
NEEDS MOAR PIXELZ - MOAR

Needs app store pictures.
And directions to the store
@gentmatt Getting lonely up here, in Level 2 :P
Hi @Michiel

@stuffe Hi

@gentmatt Doesn't seem to have worked that well for him. But that is truly and example of gratuitous illustrations.

@stuffe congrats on reaching level 2 ;-)

1:32 PM
@Michiel Busy week :)
Welcome to chat.

Jep, very busy week :) why?

@stuffe I think you should have posted that as a separate Jeopardy question, but points for the geeky answer anyhow. It'll be nice to have an easily linked reference.

@Michiel I simply cannot imagine! :)

@stuffe Haha :D why do you say so?

150 rep points to the good today and I haven't even had coffee yet. I may add rum.

1:36 PM
@jaberg I think I will do one. There are a number of facets to it. File sizes of a word document being different on Mac/Windows etc, because the unit of measurement is different, and so on.
There is plenty scope for a good Jeopardy one.

@stuffe I like that—particularly if you work the "Mac relevancy" into

@jaberg That's nothing, I lost close to that to my repcap last night alone :o
So, you ask it, I will answer it ;)
I will wait for post promotion
but brew it

@stuffe You have to leave something for us normal people who aren't so quick with the "pitchers".

Can't believe the GIMP is so popular

@stuffe Your GIMP answer has taken off since being accepted. Almost double that of my answer—which seems to to be doing well enough since I added the photo.

it's one of those questions anyone who has ever used a computer should know

@stuffe You need to stay out of my head. At least until I have coffee.

It's funny what get's big votes sometimes
@jaberg If Kyle and Davies are alter-egos, what does that make us?!

@stuffe That's generally what motivates any comment I make about voting or comparison. It's not that I begrudge anyone the votes, I'm just surprised by what works and what doesn't.
@stuffe I'm going with Brothers from different mothers.

My biggest scorers are pretty soft questions with nothing but a hand hold answer. My favourite answers typically are niche enough to attract minimal votes

@stuffe And in our case, how often we're simultaneously working on strikingly similar responses.

'Great Minds' syndrome. Or in my case, 'So Very Very Great Minds' ;)
[16] Why does stock Mac OS X allow me to rip CDs but not DVDs?
[15] Is There A Free Photoshop Alternative for Mac OS X?
My top 2 answers.

Meanwhile @KyleCronin is giving me the business in the comments. Times are good at AD. Everyone has a smile on their face and a spring in their step!

ha!

Your DVD ripping explanation was very well done. Its an example of a question that I knew the answer to, but wasn't prepared to sit down and develop it into the excellent package that you did.

I enjoyed that answer for a few reasons, some of which I cant go into (Oooh, mystery!)
and the bloke who asked it followed me on twitter after!

@stuffe Probably clicks every link you post there.

1:50 PM
I did actually share that one one on Twitter, and he replied, so he probably did click it too :)
When an answer is removed, does it remain visible to mods and the OP?
I deleted one and it stayed visible to me (dimmed tho) - who else can see that?

I just noticed that the majority of your GIMP screenshot is actually Aperture. No wonder it looked much-improved.

I just pulled it from the gimp site. That would seriously breach my 3rd party app policy if I had that thing installed locally!
actually, that really is a shoddy screeenshot!

@stuffe I didn't realize that your policy applied to all your Macs. I thought it was an experiment on a single Mac.

Wow. Lot's of talk going on in here :)

@stuffe Kind of trickery on the part of the GIMP folks. You'll barely notice that it has to run under X11 and that the menus will drive you insane as a result!
@gentmatt This is a meeting of the Great Minds. Or of the Very Very Great Minds. It depends on who you ask.

@jaberg It's just that the Air get's approx 90% of my time. Anything goes on the iMac, for now, until ML is released and I perform my annual audit and full rebuild.

That online Photoshop option was a real sleeper though. Unbelievably good for something that runs in a browser—though the thought of "uploading" my photos to work on them is something I'd want to consider and explore. (I tested with an archive photo someone sent me, not my own work.)
@stuffe I did an audit for Lion, I don't think I'll have to repeat for ML—but you should relax in your rigidity. ;)
Speaking of Great Minds, good morning @NathanGreenstein.

Yeah, that was a good one. To be honest, I know Sweet FA about image editing, and just pushed out a "Received Wisdom" answer, would have thought someone with genuine skills could have out-answered me with specific targetted answers about the OPs ore detailed requirements other than "free".
