12:02 AM
@bmike So you're saying questions like "What tiny thing in Lion has made you smile or caught you off-guard" is off topic.

Those are Community Wikis, and not questions per se
Can anyone assist with this question: apple.stackexchange.com/a/44292/9495 and list what runtimes are available for webapps on iOS, or is it just Javascript?

@stuffe JavaScript is the only client-side option for webapps.

Perl/PHP all server side, what about Python?

@stuffe Python would have to be server side as well.

12:19 AM
@gentmatt Congrats on the iPod touch!

@jaberg Automator the the rescue again!

@DanielL It is the gift that keeps on giving.

@DanielL Now whenever I watch a superhero movie or something, and it says, "so-and-so... to the rescue!" I'm going to hear "...the the rescue!"

@TimothyMuellerHarder Otto to the rescue. The hero is Otto.

@jaberg Otto Mator?

12:27 AM
That's better.
Just Otto. That's what Sal calls him.

"Look in the Dock! It's a robot! It's a cyborg! It's... Otto Mator!"
or Otto the Automator? Is that what it is?
That's what the FB page calls him...

@TimothyMuellerHarder Yes, I guess that would be the full designation. I've only heard him called Otto.
Hello, my name is Otto and I'm the automation robot in Mac OS X!
So Otto is his name and automator is his game.

*automation
Wait, so is he actually an automaton? :O

But is he a finite state automaton?

Except in the page title he's Otto the automator so I was playing with the phrasing.
@DanielL He is one fine automaton. Saved my bacon numerous times.

12:32 AM
Not really the best at creating workflows-saved-as-applications, though.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Huh? I have a bunch of workflow apps saved.

@jaberg As do I, but they take way longer to run than they could. In my experience it usually takes at least 5 seconds for the automation to even begin.
Compared to 0 seconds for a workflow within Automator.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Never bothered me. If I'm calling Automation, the task would have taken way more than 5 seconds to complete.

Hello.

12:37 AM
I find the presence of the iPad all over the site disturbing. I feel as though I am being watched by that beautiful camera.
3

@jaberg The only time I have them saved as apps rather than services is either for my Flurry icons on the desktop or to automate copying a folder to App Support on a foreign computer. Both times I need something speedy. /shrug

@TimothyMuellerHarder I probably use services most often but droplet apps are a close second.

@Mahnax The only problem I have with it is that I've accidentally clicked it maybe five times now.
2

@TimothyMuellerHarder Haha, very good.

@jaberg I keep meaning to make some of those, they could be very useful for me. Just never get around to it :/

12:54 AM
How does one create droplet apps?

@DanielL With a leaky faucet.

:-)

Just doing my duty, sir.

Wait, I see. Applications are self-running workflows. Any files or folders dropped onto an Application will be used as input to the workflow.
I didn't even realize that was an option. Cool.

1 hour later…
2:12 AM
Hm.

2:31 AM
@Mahnax hmmm

3:01 AM
@bmike HMM.

3:16 AM
Also, harrumph.

3:27 AM
hmmm

Je ronronne.
Miaou.

3:56 AM
@gentmatt you keep this up and you'll break 10K by the end of the week!

Omg @mahnax
It's like a real life version of emails that start with add us to your address book so you can receive messages from us. If I'm reading it, I've already got my spam controls sussed out.

4:15 AM
@bmike Y a-t-il un problème?

Un clou chasse l'autre...

Hehe.
Oui, mais c'est bon, n'est-ce pas?

Très bon

Are you Google Translating, or do you actually speak French?
I wouldn't expect a person from Minneapolis to speak French, but you never know.

I learned it in high school. Sadly, it hasn't been used. Spanish has corrupted but kept some of the words alive for me. Typing it on the iPad is challenging with autocorrect set for English.

4:28 AM
@bmike switch to the French keyboard.

Ah, interesting.

il marche bien pour le français. Je utilise ça maintenant. (Sorry, that was probably really terrible)

Changement du langue....

I think you should switch ça and utilise.

That sounds correct.

4:34 AM
Okay. I've only been learning for two months, so I cannot guarantee correctness on my part.

Merci @timothy. Je voudrais parler à mon iPad

Changing it now, though, would take about 12 taps and 2 minutes, so I won't bother! :D

Speech recognition FTW!!!

It seems that my Mac detects which language I am typing in and automatically switches to that.
Oh, have any of you tried trackpad handwriting?

@Mahnax in regard to your usage of <i> as indicated by your bio: use <em>. It's better practice.
No, I haven't.

4:37 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder I don't think it works on SE.
I use <em> when I write HTML.

Wow I'm really impressed with the speech recognition On the iPad. My French is not very good and the iPad just translated it perfectly

Never mind, it does work.

No handwriting for me...

Looks like the Chinese iOS keyboard...

4:41 AM
Je peux le utilise.
@TimothyMuellerHarder I've not used it.

Me neither! :D
Though I'm not sure what you meant by that last French message. Translated, it's "I can use it," but I can't make that make sense in context...

Oh, I can use the trackpad handwriting.
It was meant to come after the picture, but I was too slow.

With your finger or a stylus?

Finger.
It is the trackpad on my MBP.

4:45 AM
What?

How do you get that, anyway? Surely it isn't built-in functionality for English...

It's built-in.
Usually one would use it for Chinese, but the English letters work too.

5
Q: songs about OS X or iOS?

neoneyeI know of just one song, but are there other songs out there? James Dempsey - Model View Controller

LOL

(The prospect of using my finger to form letters is pretty much awful IMO.)
@Mahnax so where is it activated?

@TimothyMuellerHarder Hmm, let me see if I can find it again.
Ah, found it!
System Prefs > Keyboard > Input Sources and Trackpad Handwriting is under Chinese — Simplified.
@daviesgeek On EL&U a question like that would be mercilessly downvoted and slaughtered.
:D

4:53 AM
@Mahnax Totally. I'm surprised it's still around here...

@daviesgeek Me too.

Q: Is "Sent from my iPhone" correctly punctuated and capitalized?

I. J. KennedyI'm sure everyone has seen this phrase at the bottom of many e-mail messages. My question is about the combination of punctuation and capitalization. The capitalization of the first word makes me think this phrase was intended to be a complete sentence, but when we get to the end, there's no per...

Our lowest-voted question of all time is about an Apple product.

@Mahnax IMO, silly question.

@daviesgeek Oops.
Wrong copypasta.

:-)

@daviesgeek I agree though!

4:54 AM
Still, silly question.
daviesgeek, California, United States
101 1

Yes indeed.

Wow, I forgot I even had a EL&U account.

an*

@bmike How's my edit on the ACL tag wiki?

13% of all questions on EL&U are closed.
Not including deleted ones.

4:59 AM
@Mahnax How did you figure that out?

@Mahnax Actually, that could be correct if he pronounces it "Nenglish."

@daviesgeek Type closed:1 into the search bar.
# of results / # of overall questions * 100 = %
@TimothyMuellerHarder Then it would have to be NL&U.

@Mahnax That's what I was thinking. Didn't know if there was a data.stackexchange query for it.

And it would still need an "an".
@daviesgeek There is, but search is so much easier.

Yah.
%4.96085409 of questions asked on Ask Different have been closed.

5:02 AM
A) "pronounced", not spelled, B) depends whether the a/an is based on "en ell and you" or "Nenglish usage..."
But I'm getting carried away.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Pronouncing it differently without changing the spelling is silly.

Um, excuse me? This is English we're talking about here.

But this argument is silly, too.

@TimothyMuellerHarder In my opinion, English is one of the silliest languages out there.

5:03 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder LOL

@Mahnax True that!

@TimothyMuellerHarder My point stands, then!

Noo, I have been outwitted!

By a child, at that.
Oh, hold on.
We're all kids here.

@Mahnax All of us, except for the lone moderator standing over there.

5:05 AM
Haha, yeah that's true. Funny, that.

@daviesgeek Yeah, but he's not saying anything.

(Speaking of which, I need to wake up in five hours... :\ )

He's watching us. :-)

@TimothyMuellerHarder tsks

Ah, sleep is overrated anyway!

5:07 AM
@Tim, is "The eyes of March" derived from "The ides of March" in Julius Caesar?

Of course it is!

> Beware the ides of March.

@stuffe Lucky!!!!

> A soothsayer bids you beware the ides of March.
> He is a dreamer, let us pass.

@Mahnax Random saying of the day?

5:08 AM
Etc.
@daviesgeek Well, not really.
I just happened to notice it when I was checking Tim's age on his profile.

"I told him Julie, don't go! Julie, don't go, it's the ides of March!"

When did you read it?

Never did. (heh)

Oh, that makes me sad.
Have you read any great works?
(By which I mean old, famous books, plays, etc. that are held in high esteem.)

Well, I've performed about 4 Shakespeare plays, I'm reading David Copperfield, I tried to read two chapters of the Iliad, and I think I may be forgetting a number of other things as well. (Not to mention all the other plays of Shakespeare's that I've seen.)

5:13 AM
@Mahnax I see.
@Mahnax me or him? Or both?

@daviesgeek Both, I suppose.
@TimothyMuellerHarder Ah, cool.
I have the Iliad on my iPod for future reading.

Tons then.

After I finish War & Peace and The Divine Comedy.
@daviesgeek exempli gratia..?

Robinson Crusoe, David Copperfield, several Shakespeare plays...

@Mahnax I assume, based on the reputation you have at EL&U, that you still have me beat by far?

5:14 AM
/me thinks really hard.
I know I've read more than just that...

What time is it in Frozen Wasteland?

@TimothyMuellerHarder Hm? Oh, perhaps. I just recently started getting into older books, but I don't have much time to read them between work and school
@TimothyMuellerHarder 11:15 PM.

Jane Eyre...

Frozen Wasteland = GMT -7 = Alberta.

Pride & Prejudice

5:15 AM
@daviesgeek vomits

@daviesgeek WOOT

@Mahnax You've read it and don't like it?

Oh hello there, bmike.

@bmike Good. And thanks!

@daviesgeek Actually, I'm currently reading it for school.
I am not enjoying it.
Although I can certainly see how someone who enjoys romance would.

5:17 AM
@daviesgeek I'm accused (rightly so) of being a kid on a weekly basis and sometimes more often :-)

@Mahnax I enjoyed it.

@daviesgeek So did my mother.

I haven't read any Jane Austen yet, but I've really enjoyed the movies of it that I've seen.

@bmike Oh, it wasn't you.
Speaking of the lone mod @DanielL

@bmike Yeah, you were gone.

5:17 AM
@daviesgeek oh - my icon is always standing over there ;-)

@DanielL You should.

On the to do list
(but it's a long list)

@bmike I didn't see it. I only saw jaberg and Rebecca.
@DanielL :-)

I loved Julius Caesar, though, BTW.
And Hamlet
And MacBeth

@Mahnax I am positive there are more, but I just can't think of any.

5:18 AM
And Midsummer Night's Dream

I have not come across a Shakespearean work that I didn't enjoy.

@DanielL That's good.

(methinks we need a "classics" room)

@Mahnax Much Ado about Nothing?

5:19 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder *** is ook!

I read the kids' version before I actually read the real thing. :-)

Titus Andronicus?

It helps.

@TimothyMuellerHarder On the list.
This summer, I will conquer my list.

A Comedy of Errors is probably on of my favorites

5:20 AM
I'm not afraid to name the Scottish play. so there. Voldemort.

There's a really great app for reading classic books.

@Mahnax Do you have a Kindle?

@bmike Actually, for the free Tshirts we got after performing Macbeth last summer, it says "Macb***" on the back. ;)

(oops, wrong un-namable)

@daviesgeek No.

5:20 AM
@DanielL :D

I do have a really great library nearby and an app.

Libraries are awesome.

We just got a new one.

Love the Kindle 1) E-ink 2) Free books, though since you've got an iPod touch, you can do the same thing

I helped catalog a library once.
GAH
IPOD TOUCH

5:21 AM
Oy.

Good, Kyle's not around to see me say "iTouch"
2

(Of course I just got back from the 1am trip to the library to return stuff that was due Saturday but won't be overdue now because they don't open to tomorrow)

@daviesgeek ears bleed

@daviesgeek O.O

;-) kidding.
LOL

5:22 AM
Oh snap.

If the message is pinned he'll have to see it.

I don't like to see it on the main site, but in chat I will be okay.
@DanielL Oh, thanks!!

I believe that a mod can kick you from the room.

/is literally laughing out loud

5:23 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder Shh, it's late.

Kicking lasts all of the five seconds it takes you to re-enter the room.

LOL

Watch,

Try it. I want to see.

(how alliterative!)

5:23 AM
@DanielL I've never been kicked.

LOL
not effective.

See, he's back.

I love the animation as the icons get bumped...

Yeah... that's the most dramatic part of it.

Aw, now I'm sad to be on an iPad :(

5:24 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder MBP sneers

@TimothyMuellerHarder As I said before, that's why I hate chatting on an iPad

Mobile chat is so icky.

@TimothyMuellerHarder (we could bump you - it would be tons of fun for you to tap, tap, tap back here...)
(not)

LOL

5:25 AM
If given the option, I think I'll pass...
Thanks though!

Does being bumped show up as something bad on your account?

not as far as I can tell.

Just an afterthought...

(Oh, man, 1:25 AM is definitely the right time to listen to Laurie Anderson)

@TimothyMuellerHarder Nah - i've never don't it - not much need for it since it's so bizarrely short
@TimothyMuellerHarder When isn't it the right time to listen to laurie anderson?

5:26 AM
Whatever...I really don't care, since you guys can vouch for my innocence.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Or System of a Down.

@bmike I would star that if I could.

@daviesgeek I think it deletes one or two of your community wiki questions each time we bump you out :-)
2

@bmike Could you explain that first message please?

10:16 = time to go to bed

5:27 AM
I experimented with how it worked right after the election because I almost did it by mistake. Of all the things to misclick, "kick this user" is perhaps the most harmless.

@daviesgeek In what universe? :P

@TimothyMuellerHarder It's sharkey's night, tonight.

My universe.

It's 1:30am here. And tomorrow's Monday. In this universe, I should likely go to sleep too.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Oh - why would I go to the trouble to bump someone from chat if they just come back with a click? - is that what you wanted to know?

5:28 AM
Oh, so you're in that universe that sleeps.

I don't have school tomorrow, but I still need my sleep :-P

Spring Break?

Homeschooled, but I go to school once a week. It's not a charter school, though.

@bmike on apple.stackexchange.com/posts/44364/revisions, you don't think it's worth mentioning that the remote doesn't work on all Macs? (Only because this particular idiot tried for a while on my MBA before realizing why I couldn't get it to work)

5:29 AM
Teacher canceled class due to a car accident in which she re-injured an old injury.

@bmike White courtesy telephone, please...

@DanielL LOL
Adios, mi amigos!

'night

Good night!

tiempo para ir a la cama
(Google Translate) :-)

5:31 AM
Actually I should probably head off as well

Farewell.
I head to the App Store for my nightly app-hunting.

I mean, I'm technically in bed already, but you know.

poof

@Mahnax AppShopper and AppZapp are your friends

@TimothyMuellerHarder Lemme see.

5:32 AM
They let you monitor price changes &c.

Looks good to me.

AZ has more functionality but AS looks nicer and is stabler.

@DanielL palm face

Happy hunting!

@bmike I figure I'm not the most clueless person in the world, so if I've made a stupid mistake, there's some reasonable chance someone else has the problem also.
(perhaps the second most clueless, but at least one other person should benefit)

5:34 AM
I try not to cover each and every warning - but feel free to add it. Maybe we need a question - which current macs lack an infrared receiver. AFAIK, it's tied with optical drives

@DanielL Words to live by.

:-)

OK, good night for real this time.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Thanks for the soundtrack inspiration
'night all

@TimothyMuellerHarder Alright, good day to you.

Q: Which current Macs have an infrared receiver

Daniel LI have an Apple Remote that I used with a white plastic MacBook. I no longer have the MacBook, but still have the remote. What current Macs have an infrared receiver and can work with the Apple Remote? What current Macs do not have an infrared receiver and cannot work with the Apple Remote?

5:49 AM
@DanielL boom
1
A: Which current Macs have an infrared receiver

bmikeCurrently (March 2012) the MacBook Air and the Mac Pro are the only generally available macs that lack a built-in infrared receiver. The white polycarbonate MacBook that is still available as a refurbished product and from educational sales channels also lacks an infrared receiver.

boom indeed
(can't accept for another 3 minutes)

ah - no rush

well, I want to accept it before I fall asleep and forget about it.
so I'm trying to stay awake

no worries
someone will ping it and you'll suss it out later.

Merry christmas to all, and to all a good night.

6:19 AM
GM lads ;)
"Requiem is a powerful software to remove Apple DRM, and is capable to remove iBooks DRM since version 3.3"
0
A: Is it possible to read iBooks without an iOS device?

MorratiRead iBooks on Non-IOS device is possible right now. Search Requiem 3.3.5, then you can get it.

@DanielL I'm so going for it...
@TimothyMuellerHarder Muchas gracias!

Good luck!

I've done it once before.
There was a week where I had hit the 200 cap four times in a row.
(with the help of a bounty)
@DanielL You're also quite far in the contest already!

Not as far as you, but I'm working on it.
Sadly, no luck on scripting this one: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/44098/…

From what I'm seeing, the two of us are currently leading in this challenge. If we keep it up we get the iPads :)

I want people to win iPads. I'd be thrilled if I'm one of them.

6:25 AM
I don't own any iOS device. So, I'm quite excited.

But I have had some good scripting success tonight.
5
A: Insert code blocks in the body of emails

Daniel LThe magic behind the formatting on StackExchange is a great perl script called Markdown. Download it, and unzip the script somewhere in /usr/local/bin Once you have that done, you can create a Service in Automator. The service you create receives rich text in any application. Check the box that...

@DanielL Still, I want to thank you for the effort you put into it.

You're welcome. If I had the current version of Pages, I'd try to GUI script it, but I don't, so I might be done with that one.
:-(
I need to go to bed. Got to get up in 4 1/2 hours.

@DanielL Have a nice sleep. I had mine already.
I just had my breakfast. And now I'm skimming through AskDifferent, while drinking my coffee.

sudo shutdown -h now zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

6:28 AM
That's such a nice way to begin the day :)
Good night.

6:48 AM
@DanielL Why do I have to assign a custom shortcut to the service? Using my custom shortcut, nothing happens. However, CMD+V works. But that's defined in the script.
(The answer is pretty awesome, by the way.)

7:35 AM
For some reason it does not work anymore after a reboot?! I'm confused. :/

2 hours later…
9:45 AM
@Michiel In case you are posting from a Mac. You can resize photos in preview via Tools -> Adjust Size. ;)

1 hour later…
10:47 AM
@bmike Soundtrack inspiration?
Oh, Laurie Anderson. Gotcha.

12:06 PM
Would this question be on topic and useful here?(@bmike, @DanielL)

Nathan Greenstein on March 19, 2012

Open/Save dialogs are a core part of OS X. Like the OS itself, these ubiquitous dialogs have several layers of functionality: they’re easy to use and can be as simple as you like, but they’re also surprisingly complex and flexible beneath the surface. Today I’m going to share my collection of ‘little things below the surface’ in open/save dialogs.

Let’s start at the top and work our way down.

As anyone can see, open/save dialogs are very similar to Finder windows. The standard sidebar, view modes, and grouping options are available. Don’t feel limited to …

@Kortuk It's a developer question. Off-topic here. There's an end-user question embedded in there somewhere, but the question is asked from the perspective of the writer of the software.

@DanielL Okay, I guess I could have read your FAQ and realized that. Now I know. Sorry for the bother.

Not a bother at all. It's a question I'd love to see answered, but sadly, this isn't the place for it.

@DanielL neither is our site, they ware doing software development but really only care from a consumer electronics perspective or software perspective how to pull it off.
@DanielL My answer would be, use the processor and screen less :)

12:14 PM
sure. But I bet there are some specific best practices that would help.
From an end user perspective, I see that my battery life is dramatically different when I'm running some apps than others, and I'd love to know if there are particular things that are battery hogs.

@DanielL I now have android, get angry later, but you know what the program "Bump" does?

no

It regularly turns on my GPS to check where I am so it can react to bump faster!
You want to see a battery die, have your GPS active for half of the day.

ah

@DanielL Yeah, there are many I can think of, but from our perspective they are really just software best practices.
Ahh well, hope all goes well over here.

12:18 PM
Thanks, and thanks for asking if we'd take the question.

@DanielL No worries, you guys do the same to me. We get to bother eachother. Although SuperUser is the most common for me to bother. Everyone thinks electrical engineers are just their to explain how to fix the fan in their computer.
