5:00 PM
@JasonSalaz USB itself is only 480Mbits max

Gonna have to restart in a minute. It's an Air--so I'll be back in a flash.

hmm..........

Not so fast--4 minutes to optimize the system. What are they installing?
Oh wait, must be 4 minutes for people with hard drives. Went from three to ding. BBIAM

I am so going to have buy this Air from my Mom.

Because they beat you to it?

Totally gonna destroy our tags!

I didn't realize that's why that was said before.

You hate them doing it, or the Verge trying to paint it like it deep and sinister meaning?

I hate the change
and not because it'll mess up our tags

5:03 PM
I'm indifferent.

"OS X" looks weird

I'll live with it. Macs are hardware that run OSX

I don't recall you being averse before.

No weirder than iOS

Same as when they dropped Computer from the company name.

5:04 PM
@JasonSalaz before it was sort of ambiguous - marketing materials said "OS X" but system messages said "Mac OS X"

I'm surprised they didn't go further. OSX and OSI? iOS and xOS?

But poor @stuffe, it's really gonna mess up his tags. ;)

Actually, should simplyfy things MASSIVELY :)
just leaves us with legacy cruft

@stuffe shouldn't be too hard to deal with - tags can be renamed

X OS, sounds exciting
however, stuffe. It is OS 10, phonetically.
so, no, no xOS.

5:08 PM
it's "ten" to nerds. it's "ecks" to 95% of their customers.
anything could happen ;)

More than likely true.

Messages up and running.

how is it?

Hey did you guys hear about Mountain Lion?

No!?!?
What is that?
;)

5:14 PM
What is this cat of which you speak?

wait, there's a new OS X?
how did I not hear about this before now?

It's just a prank @daviesgeek

Must have been at a breakfast meeting @KyleCronin

It's not 10.8, it's just 10.1 with bugfixes

@daviesgeek No, no one's been talking about it at all.

5:16 PM
Renew Your Program

Your Mac Developer Program will expire in 9 days. Don't wait.
@KyleCronin re server.....there's a server build with the same date as the normal one..
Say hello to Mountain Lion Server, yearly updates.....
Makes planning your vacation easy I suppose ;)

Unless of course 10.9 isn't released in 2013 in which case never mind.

I've been reading that they're planning on yearly from now on
though they're going to run out of numbers pretty quick

@KyleCronin There's an infinite number of them...

10.10. 10.11. 10.100020203

@Daniel touche

5:21 PM
It's cats they're going to run out of. Hence recycling Puma
Apple Kremlinologists will be speculating the Puma*<>*Mountain Lion indicates that this is Apple's last OS X release.

Cheetah was the first OSX release, 10.0
Puma was 10.1

I remember Cheetah. Puma was the first release. ;) (I'm not saying you're incorrect.)

It has a nice ring to it. But then so did all the crap about Lion being the king of the big cats, and as such the last version os Mac OS X
There are plenty more cats left.

big cats?

I can haz cheeseburger?

5:24 PM
Was it 10.4.9 about which blogtards were blathering on Apple had to release 10.5 because they were out of numbers? Apparently version numbering isn't truly decimal based. ;)

I think Apple missed an opportunity to name their iOS releases after small cats
2

Tabby

Calico

@stuffe I am not a kremlinologist.

@jaberg well, when I'm talking about "out of numbers" I mean there's a tendency in the software field (at least with commercially released software) not to go much past 10 or 11
hence mac os 7, 8, 9, 10, 10.1, 10.2, etc

5:26 PM
Lynx
Ocelot
bobcat

@KyleCronin I don't disagree and I suspect that we are nearing the end of the "10" series. But it isn't forced in anyway by the numbering system.

I forsee they will do a Solaris, and drop the "10."
Actuall, that's crap, I don't

Nor does "11" inherently have to be a major change (i.e. 9 to 10). It could easily be along the lines of 8 to 9. A steady evolution. But if it is the blogosphere will go wild with rumors about how Apple has lost the ability to innovate in the post-Jobs era.

Or do I, OSX9 has a clean ring to it, like iOS6

@jaberg I'm sure many are saying that about ML

5:29 PM
I'm sure you're right. But ultimately evolution is more important than revolution. Just less exciting.

this download is taking forever
trying to update to 10.7.3

Wonder why iPhone OS never had cute names

Even via software update they're pushing the Combo update.
(At least they still were the last time I pulled it down.)

they are indeed

@KyleCronin I wondered the same

5:30 PM
1.35GB

we had iPhone OS utterly fail to use colloquial names, sticking to version numbers, while at the same time Mac OS X was starting to use the colloqiuals more. I think Lion was the first time Apple used the name front and center before the version number in materials?

Apparently the problems with the delta updater were so widespread they decided to just push combo. Annoying because it's giving new life to the You should always use the combo updater meme.

Maybe OSX9 will cripple Spotlight, then we can have Liger

I want to run iOS Tabby

More likely it will remove the hierarchical file system and we'll all be dependent on Spotlight.

5:34 PM
And Ragdoll. And TortoiseShell. And DSH.

I'm hoping they use mythical monsters for OX 11.
2
OS 11.1 KRAKEN!!

OS X1.1, Cyclops (there's only one)

@jaberg yeah, the situation concerning the delta for 10.7.3 remains unclear

OSX1.8 will never exist because there are only 7 wonders of the world.

@JasonSalaz OS X 11?

5:35 PM
What?

OS 10 11
(the x is for 10)

10+1 = 11

Yes! It does! RT @silkenson Does #mountainlion "fix" Address Book (Contacts) so that it can have the 3-column display like in Snow Leopard?

@NathanGreenstein big cats will be passé. We'll have Cat People. Very Val Lewton, with monochrome in just the right places.

ok, updating now, see you guys in a few

5:36 PM
seriously guys
Native Twitter on the Desktop.

OSXi?
osII?

I'm all A-Twitter over it.

@GrahamPerrin Obviously there was something missing (or malformed) in the delta update. And I don't dispute that I've used Combo updates to solve problems. But those problems are, in my experience, rare and I've been using deltas personally and for clients for many years now. One of the MacFixit guys (big pushers of that meme back in the day) admitted to me that their recommendation was based on the original software update process and that the advice didn't hold true for the (then) current day.

I have it!
It's obvious

They stole that idea from @stuffe. ;)

5:39 PM
The next version of OSX after Mountain Lion will be the merge between OSX and iOS

I've got to head over to ars and start screaming about prior art

It will clearly be called....

(builds tension....)
osXi - Schrodinger

@jaberg agreed, rare, but the approach around 10.7.3 time differed significantly from the approach around 10.6.8 time. If I'm not mistaken, for 10.7.3 Apple released two identically named combo updaters with different checksums.

5:40 PM
iOS X - Schrödinger

Xi - X, i and 11

Speaking of Schrödinger

iOS XI

First to tag with osXi or Schrödinger WINS

5:42 PM
@jaberg I saw that in their e-mail last night. Hilarious.

Same here @JasonSalaz.
@stuffe Stepping outside of the "OS name theme", what are the characteristics of a question you would tag Schrödinger
Because it's a tag that the geek in me wants us to have.

it's the perfect name. osX can be dead and alive at the same time, whilst keeping the cat theme and moving us away from 10 to 11, but keeping the X and i . No need to thank me.
Schrödinger - You could use it to tag questions that are dead ( in terms of activity) that you promote to the front to revive? No saying if it will work or not, hence Schrödinger?
Not ideal, but it's a starting point for you to riff off

@stuffe Is it?

Schrödingers Mod

@stuffe we already have BBOD for systems that are neither dead nor alive, or both

5:46 PM
Welcome back @daviesgeek. Thought we'd chased you off.

No I had to leave
I just posted that link, then ran. ;-)

Well in that case, everyone resume teasing @daviesgeek.

@GrahamPerrin Just trying to scratch @jabergs itch

Thanks!!!!! (sarcasm)
@Daniel Haha! I didn't read the transcript.

osXi Schrödinger - I will say it enough times here for Google to rank this as the genesis of that term

5:49 PM
Dude, in the future if you"re going to post and dash let us know so we can save our A material.

So, @daviesgeek, did you hear the news?

@stuffe No. Wait are you teasing me again?

Again? You're of the impression he'd stopped?

Hey, I never started....
....you guys started, I just copied ;)

I do think it's pretty interesting that this will be a very short release cycle.
@stuffe Right!!
I'm sure. (sarcasm)

5:51 PM
(no, wait, I started it - oops!)

Welcome to The Schrödinger's Catskills. I'll be here all week.
2

back
wow, that took forever

@stuffe Ouch! Ha!!!!!
I like that 10.8 will be implementing iCloud more.

@KyleCronin I think I walked away from the process on my main deck.

I would love to talk all night, but I gotta run

5:52 PM
bye

Seeya laters @stuffe

Although it's interesting that notification center is being brought to the desktop.
@stuffe See ya!

He's so quick. Going to need a TextExpander shortcut.

And Airplay!!!!
@jaberg :-)
No!! I reached my daily limit of votes!!
6 hours is a long time to wait!

There's a limit? I don't know if I should be mortified or relieved that I didn't know that.
2

5:56 PM
Yes, there is a limit
You can vote 40 times in a day.
I hit that limit quite often.

Gotta have a hobby I suppose.

Mountain Lion deserves a blog post.
(goes to blogger and writes his post)

@daviesgeek Preview.app in Mac OS X 10.7.3 (Build 11D50) already works quite nicely with iCloud document storage. It's possible to edit (example: annotate) a single image in the cloud, from multiple devices. I haven't had time to figure out whether deltas are used but the timings of edition-related network traffic seems remarkably similar to the timings used for auto save and so on.

I too am going to duck out and catch up on the news about this Mountain Lion. See you folks a little later.

@GrahamPerrin Ok, I haven't used Lion yet, but I still keep up with the news.

6:01 PM
And now it's time for me to hit the road …

I scared everyone away!
:-)
Were you guys talking about me behind my back?? ;-)

You're a scary little dude.
Psychic too.

@NathanGreenstein did you get my iMessage?

No, but I've got terrible cell reception here.

wifi?

6:04 PM
clearly you have some data

Nothing open.
Yeah, some
Not sure how much iMessage takes and what it's timeouts are

Does iMessage desktop not have delivery notification?

if it does, I don't see it on my end
I sent it to nathang345@gmail.com

Should you have outed that publically?

6:10 PM
I forgot that diamonds information did show up.

So @JasonSalaz your prediction came true.
Gatekeeper
It's pushing people towards the App Store.

either Messages doesn't work for me, or everyone is just ignoring me

you did

I did.
Kyle did you decline my migration flags?

6:22 PM
yes
if something's on topic for AD, only the OP can request migration

@daviesgeek I predicted that?
Nice to have someone who remembers podcast details better than I...
-

@JasonSalaz I think you did.

_-_

Maybe it was @Kyle

I think it might have been me

6:24 PM
message me, Kyle.
or did you already try?

I've been trying

I got something

yep, got your response back
maybe I had the wrong address

indeed you did

6:26 PM
I did.

/me sighs

Why?

Guess I should just turn off the KA-THUNK

You don't like Google+

"you did" was in response to Kyle.

6:27 PM
@JasonSalaz Which is???

@stuffe well, ML does affect Spotlight in a small way - it's no longer the rightmost icon in the menu bar
that's now notification center

@daviesgeek The KA-THUNK is the sound effect SE plays if you have flash enabled and sounds on (default). It's loud and obnoxious and I hate the fact that it plays when the room it occurs in has focus. I was responding to Kyle's "maybe I had the wrong address" with "you did". I don't like @'ing everything because it's soooooo terribly obnoxious.

you could just disable Flash, like I do

I want the sound.
Then again, with the pop-up, maybe I don't care.

for the longest time I never even knew that there was supposed to be a ka-thunk sound
also, little trivia, during the chat beta that sound used to be the TNG doorbell chime

6:32 PM
It's more than just the sound too though.

which was so much better

It needs to be the Metal Gear Solid ! sound.
or the codec ring
It's more than just the sound, but it's SO UGLY when chat looks like Twitter.
I've been having this problem for years in IRC.
God forbid we have natural flowing conversation.
In hind sight I could have said: "Indeed you did, Kyle."

@JasonSalaz actually, the @-replies very nicely allow multiple simultaneous conversations
I love that I can specify which message I'm replying to

between 3 active users that is EXCEEDINGLY unnecessary.

@JasonSalaz right, that
That's what I thought

6:36 PM
I'll admit that in the small cases, that's true

Sorry I disappeared because the computer froze.

but earlier I was having a conversation about address book permissions while someone else was talking about cars
and it worked because we each just replied to our own @-replies

I love this computer, but sometimes......
Nice! I already have one share for my Google+ page.
Someone that I don't even know.

maybe they think Apple put up the page

That's be pretty funny
However, I'd love it

6:40 PM
I think it's misleading to create a page for something if you're not that thing's creator, or in any way associated with that thing's creator
2

@KyleCronin mmm....I suppose I should put that there.

yeah

Like all the kids on youtube
"No copyrights intended!"
/me sighs

Right

or "All copyright belongs to X"
that doesn't mean anything

6:42 PM
help! how do you change a page's description??

no idea

That was the point in my sigh, Kyle.

Breathes a sigh of relief.
I fixed it

by the way, it's "OS X Mountain Lion"
I may not like it, but that's what it is

Really?
Hmm...
I will have to fix that too.
I forgot
OS X Lion too right?

6:49 PM
yes

How does that look?
Do you like it?
BTW, I like your idea @KyleCronin of naming iOS releases after small cats. Really great idea.
Hey did we get a page rank bump???
I seem to recall that AD was a PR 5 site.
I HAVE A PR 1 BLOG!!!!!!!!!!
I am so happy!!!!!!
/me is shocked

7:06 PM
@KyleCronin Try jeff@purpleshark.com

/me is jumping up and down with excitement.

Q: Airplay from iOS to OS X

Thomas LatkovichIn the context of Apple's announcement and subsequent release of OS X Mountain Lion (to developers), it was made known that ML would be able to broadcast via AirPlay to AirPlay-enabled devices such as Apple TV. Did Apple disclose if ML would be capable of receiving AirPlay from iOS devices (i.e. ...

@jaberg Jason finally responded

I finally got down that far. No worries.

I appreciate the offer though

It looks like my plan to get a new Mac (or two) just became a priority. My primary deck doesn't pass Mountain Lion muster.

7:09 PM
@jaberg I didn't even think to ask, what are the requirements for ML?

Let me find the post--but a bunch of '07 and '08 machines fell off the list.
> Update: As we suggested might happen in our Lion review, Mountain Lion's developer preview appears to do away with support for any Mac that cannot boot into OS X's 64-bit kernel. I'll link you to that page of our Lion review again if you'd like deep technical information about what that means, but the short version is that a wide range of Apple's products from 2007 and 2008 are being dropped regardless of whether they include a Core 2 Duo processor. The list of supported Macs includes:

• iMac (mid 2007 or later)
I think this put a nail in the iPad 3 coffin for me, at least in terms of next month.

@jaberg Whaddya mean?
I'm still reeling from the shock of having a PR 1 blog that I can't think straight.

Actually, I might be okay. Need to dig a little deeper, but my '07MBP does support the 64 bit kernel.

@jaberg this is interesting. I have a 2007 MacBook, looks like it won't be supported

Jury is still out @KyleCronin. I have 64 bit. I have nVidea graphics.
I need a definitive statement (for pre-release software) ;)
@daviesgeek I meant that it's questionable as to whether or not my '07 MacBook Pro meets the technical requirements for OS X 10.8.

7:18 PM
@jaberg my MB has GMA950 graphics, so according to Anand I'm out of luck

@jaberg I see.
I think

Actually I just had a complete disconnect. Running a system report on this MacBook Air doesn't tell me anything about my own MacBook Pro. I've gotten so used to this machine, I think of it as mine.

if you have several Macs, you could save the System Profiler reports into a Dropbox folder
that way you can always refer to them, even when you're not on that machine
...but I realize that doesn't help you now

That's a good idea.
You don't have any type of screen sharing installed do you?

and I just checked, this MB refuses to load Lion's 64-bit kernel

7:25 PM

What helps is going into the office and firing up my Computer. 2.2ghz 15" MBP. So far so good…
Coulda used screen share too, but I the walk is good for me.
Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT

@jaberg :-)
I love LMI (Logmein)

even if it's not officially supported, I hope there's a way to hack it on

hey @KyleCronin would you be interested in writing a post for my blog? Not necessarily now, but in the future.

Okay, I think. (Graphics wise.) And 64bit Kernel. Looks like I'm probably on the low side of supported.

7:28 PM
@daviesgeek sorry, but I can't even regularly write for my own blog

@KyleCronin Hey NP. I understand.
Anybody else interested?
And I do mean anyone.

@jaberg what does it say under System Profiler -> Software -> 64-bit Kernel and Extensions?
@daviesgeek also, if anyone's interested, the AD blog is still looking for contributors

@daviesgeek The whole point of my workflow is never needing to log in to a remote machine. I have done it, but lately I don't need to do so.

@KyleCronin Yes, I know....
What about a ML post?

@daviesgeek I'm working on one
but there can be more than one

7:30 PM
Aw...man, you beat me to it.
@KyleCronin Oh! ok.

you might try focusing on a single feature change and going into detail

I am basically going to rephrase my blog post.
And outline what I think will be major
I probably should introduce myself too, right?

@daviesgeek not necessary

Ok.
I will see what I can do. The post may come out later than yours.

+1 on detailing a single feature. The web already runneth over with overviews.

7:34 PM
k

@daviesgeek my suggestion is to not simply report the news, but to take something and really go deep on it with details, your opinions, etc

7:45 PM
@bmike hey, did you hear the news?

@stuffe I was in the Uptown store when the employees let me know the Mountain Lion and Messages for OSX news.
Is this the news to hear or is there even more?

You were supposed to say "what news", then I would make some ridiculous comments about a sale in Best Buy or something...

HEY EVERYONE - COUGAR IS THE NEW MOUNTAIN LION (oh - but it's a puma too - brain asplodes)
@stuffe I actually just spent two benjamins there last week - first time in a long time I've sent them cash of any sort.

@bmike Yup that's the news
exciting huh?
