Have any of us played with that at all?

Q: Raspberry pi 2 wont show anything on screen, help?

AnthonySo I bought this device to run Spillpass aka homepass. It initially showed me a screen when plugged in via hdmi. Now the tv says no signal. According to the program cycling MAC addresses the device is cycling the Macs properly and the wifi dongle is flashing properly. I am not sure whats wrong or...

it's all greek to me

12:32 AM
yeah 165 @ SO, @Jacobm001, you better buckle up

@Ghanima You buckle up. I'm not so much a of SOs community.

those spillspass links look dubios

12:49 AM
@Ghanima Oh thanks! I just downloaded it and its pretty good
@goldilocks Is learning to program really necessary ?
I have a hard time with programming, and since time is money i think it would be cheaper for me to just pay people to create the code to do the automation i need

de nada, have fun

1:08 AM
@Freedo necessary? No. If it's not something you particularly enjoy, and/or don't have the time, why not pay for someone else to do it?

1:35 AM
@Ghanima I was just gonna ping this one - I was wondering at the Academic Achievement level for the OP and I've plonked in a half-decent explanation of SSH but I am not sure they would be able to take it in having taken a quick glance at one of the Spillpass links which TBH does give some pointers...

it will be a tricky one to get a good answer, right

Got my new Front door today (down a couple of £K - urrgh) but the Electric motor drive lock does exactly what it says on the tin. Bit concerned when the fitters arrived and the cable came out half way down the outside edge of the door frame - which was to go up against a square corner pillar...
... but the additional spacer in between meant we could get the cable out to the inside of the porch and I popped down to a local DIY store to get some trunking to run around the area to where my RPi and UPses and other gear will eventually be.

2 hours later…
3:58 AM
@SlySven electric motor drive?
Please, please tell me they come with an immensely satisfying "swooosh"ing sound.

The lock can be operated with a (supplied 12V 2A PSU) and a three wire (useful) cable the 12V feed and a control voltage (apply 12V to unlock & hold unlock if maintained). No built in swooooshing sounds - but I might rig-up a "Glad to be of service" announcement from the RPi controller...!
The wiring does support the connection of a separate "opener" by two more of the wires but the contact is not present in the lock motor I paid for ( 8-( ) - an opener would have been a nice touch but there wasn't one on offer and I couldn't justify it...

@SlySven id this for the wow factor or because of a disability? I am seriously considering adding this to my house.

PandaLion98Overly-simplified beginner-friendly SSH tutorial/crash course (Windows): What is SSH? SSH, or Secure SHell, is a way to use the command-line interface over the network. Wait. What's a command line? A command-line interface is a way to tell a computer what to do. The difference is instead o...

Any opinions?

10:03 AM
@PandaLion98 I might argue that the SD card can be damaged when pulling the plug, also do we know if this epillpass os/emulator supports SSH?

10:21 AM
@SteveRobillard Says on the site it supports SSH.

4 hours later…
1:56 PM
@Freedo As Jacob says, not strictly necessary if you have the budget, but realize paying someone to write custom code for you may quickly and easily run into the thousands of dollars unless you have a nice/interested friend. Of course, if your time is also worth money and you are really determined to do this, it might still be considered cheaper than the time it will take to learn programming sufficiently to do whatever it is you want to do.

3 hours later…
5:11 PM
I don't know why I find it so amusing, but Google Music has a set of radio stations for "Drinking Gourmet Coffee".

demographics gone wild

I think it's offensive. What about the poor drinkers?
*poor tea drinkers?
They already have to suffer with their hot leaf juice. The least we can do is provide them decent music to lighten the burden! :P

5:35 PM
@Jacobm001 Isn't this derivative of the sampler albums on the Starbucks counter?
BTW, How goes the fight against the rebel forces?

@goldilocks I wouldn't know. I avoid Starbucks.
@goldilocks horribly.

@Jacobm001 Well, now you know. It is a whole lifestyle. I was just in the beer store here (they are gov. run) and they were selling tin signs that said, "DAD'S GARAGE: If we can't fix it, it ain't broke".
I hope Google has a Canned beer drinking' channel.

I'm not sure why we don't list them as terrorists. A lot of people I thought were intelligent are rallying behind them, and we're devoting a lot of time and attention to a rather simple issue.

@Jacobm001 Because no matter what Americans touting guns are patriots?
Of one form or another.

@goldilocks Because no matter what white Americans touting guns are patriots?
Fixed it for you

5:40 PM
ROTFL

I really wish I could say that without sarcasm.

I do occasionally worry about what would happen here if there were some kind of crazy civil war south of the border, or some militia group went berserk. Like, we do not have 4 guns per household. However, there is plenty of room to hide.

I went down to my parents place in Southern Oregon, which is far more red than Corvallis. I saw 6 different people open carrying weapons. 1 guy had an AK-47, another had a 10 gauge shotgun, and another had a 50 cal desert eagle with at least 50 bullets on his hip. THIS DOES NOT MAKE ME FEEL SAFER
What the hell use are those at Walmart? The idiots with a hero complex are far more likely to kill me than an active shooter. Plus, cops only have an accuracy of like 35% in an active shooter situation...
/rant
Ironically, that Walmart had everything on lockdown. Including $9 headphones. Very little is locked like that at the Walmart here :P

So you will be moving home after graduation ;)

Well, with how poorly most of those idiots were carrying, I could probably make a profit swiping their guns and selling them on the black market...

5:49 PM
Can individual establishments have restrictions? "No shirt no shoes no service and please leave your firearms outside"

Depends on the state.
Oregon, yes. Texas, no.

No doubt.

But in a place like Southern Oregon, that's often not a good idea for larger businesses. Making the idiot redneck with an assault weapon angry isn't really something anyone wants to handle.

Obviously not...

6:10 PM
@goldilocks: If trump wins the election, can I come live with you in Canada as a refuge?
That is, assuming he doesn't want to build a wall between the US and Canada too?

@Jacobm001 We could trade papers. I'd be heading for Cali or New York anyway, and I am good with a knife.

@goldilocks What good would the knife do you?

Pre-emptive strike. I'm also very stealthy, and a knife in the hand is better than a gun in the holster close up.
"Mysterious Canadian serial killer rids US of gun tooting fools."
I guess that should be toting but tooting is fine.

Sounds like a full time job. :P

I would have to replicate myself exponentially on a small time frame.
"Mysterious Canadian lifeform has all your bases now."

6:20 PM
My favorite part of this election has been all the people that say things like, "If that damn socialist (Sanders) is elected, I'm moving to Canada!".
I never quite have the heart to tell them that Canada is waaay more socialist than the US ever will be in the next decade :P

6:33 PM
I think that depends on the state. Now y'all gets health care, it would be reasonably on par a lot of places I think. Like, welfare in NYC seemed similar to what it is here. Social housing was probably better. When I arrived on the bus I could see all the NYCHA buildings coming in (covering something like 5% of the population) and thought, Who are these people, communists? I did not even know what they were at that point, it was just the fact they all look the same and are everywhere.

The social housing is pretty unique to NYC, mostly because of how incredibly expensive it is to live there
Your federal minimum wage is a solid $3 higher, and our workers rights are slipping.
Though I do think that'll turn around.

The poverty and stratification are more drastic. Some of the Indian reservations here are very shameful though.

7:13 PM
you guys make the pi and gun-loving rednecks really feel unwelcome here

7:51 PM
@Ghanima Gun loving rednecks don't need to feel welcome. They have guns.
Oh whoops its the internet.
I don't mind guns or rednecks, actually. You can hear shotguns from my house during duck season. I am glad they do not bring them to the Walmart though.

that's what they say about you canadians, you have as much guns as the yanks, yet you tend to not kill each other

I don't think we have as many guns, but they aren't that unusual either. However, mostly long guns. It is a lot harder to get a handgun. And no assault rifles, bazooka, tactical nuclear weapons, etc.

but who wouldn't like to have tactical nukes for self protection!?

In fact not even the federal gov. has those here and I believe we don't allow US warships in carrying them.
But no doubt they get smuggled across the border and sold on the black market :O

8:06 PM
people got 39 hats max
crazy

@goldilocks and @Ghanima: I don't mind guns either for what it's worth. I really don't think civilians need military grade weapons though.

but a motorbike with side carriage (if you call it that) is only half as cool without machine gun!
2

8:21 PM
It's a "side car" here.
But yes, you are otherwise correct ;)

@Ghanima Mostly here you just see those in movies manned by Gestapo officers with knee high leather boots and ze very bad accent.

8:56 PM
@Ghanima: so much for our shot at necromancer :P

did you get it?

Nope.

did I do something wrong?

No...

I cannot recall that I've banned you or something

8:57 PM
"So much for our shot", as in we tried, but didn't get it.

but why

Cause no one voted for the answers, and it's buried now, so I figured they're lost causes.

as are many of our answers
:(

I'm not going to lie, sometimes I don't like putting an answer out for new users since they often don't accept anything.

wow I have 20+ zero score answers, not counting those deleted
2

8:59 PM
As @goldilocks has said before, we're stingy!
I added a new tag, "jessie-lite"

you better answer the question. Though I do not see why it is like it is

Doing it now. I just wanted to double check a couple things.

9:23 PM
@SteveRobillard It's a wow, I've finally got a place of my own and I'm an electronics enthusiast (and Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering)!

9:38 PM
Looks like I get to learn Haskell this term. That sounds fun... Does that mean I'm crazy? :P

it does!
did you deliberately pick that?

No, it's a mandatory course. CS381 - Programming Language Fundamentals.
Apparently, that's our intro to functional programming languages.
At least I have access to complete those projects! :P

yeah

Wow, installing haskell onto the RPi takes 534MB :-/

Looks like adding a second SD/MicroSD card reader/writer would be an idea - though the prices of USB 2.0 thumb drives (like Diesel fuel, now down to under £1/litre in UK) are dropping in price at the moment so that is more likely to be the most economic thing to do...
And what exactly is Haskell, what is it parentage (as a programming language) I presume?

9:57 PM
@SlySven Sheesh what do they teach EEEs...

@goldilocks Year of Graduation: 1988 - I'm not sure what the Computer Scientists are getting up to NOW - I recall back then they shared some of the simpler? EEE courses in the School of Engineering at University back in the day...

@SlySven It's a functional programming language. It doesn't really have a parentage that I'm familiar with.
Functual meaning, not procedural like C.

@SlySven LOL You're older than me by a decade then. Yeah I got the impression you guys were supposed to be the creme de LA
Sorry, creme de la creme.

Somedays I wonder if I'm the only person under 25 with more than 2k rep on this site :P

Mostly I'm still young at heart.
You are as old as the person you feel - though that can get you into all sorts of trouble.

10:08 PM
@Ghanima was no fun and wouldn't let @SteveRobillard and I pull a tooth or two out...
He could be a youngin I guess :P

? what was no fun, me?

Yeah, remember? Steve and I were talking about launching a hypothetical twin of yours into space, carbon dating you, or dating you by your teeth?
You said we weren't allowed. :P

@goldilocks "Creme de la creme" oh, "Crème de la crème" - is it just my Country's closeness geographically to the French why I miss those accents on phrases and words from there?
Mudlet is not yet Internationalized but I worked on it last year for a few weeks (whilst on a extremely unusual for me) holiday - to the French Riviera - and working to get more than just plain ASCII (a.k.a. Latin1) to work was taking a lot of effort with all the assumptions make about a "character" taking up just one byte.
@Jacobm001 Given the resolution of Radio-carbon dating vis-à-vis relativistic effects you'd need to get very close to light-speed to produce resolvable differences between the two siblings anyhow...

10:24 PM
@SlySven blah blah blah physics stuff. :P

@Jacobm001 Yer cannae change the laws of physics, laddie!

10:40 PM
@Jacobm001 grrrr

@Ghanima @SlySven: Uh, you guys aren't that smart. Haven't you ever heard of relativity? It's all about your point of view, man. :P
I reject your realities, and substitute my own!
/me is a master of fisics.

Well the twin would be @Ghanima 's relative!

I'm pretty sure the only reason @Ghanima hasn't temp banned me now is because he's seeing too much red. ;P

11:01 PM
it's so quiet here since jacob was banned

11:14 PM
8-) I wonder whether my "get an RPi to beep at me when I get mentioned on Chat" question:
2
Q: Which software packages would allow my RPi to alert me to mentions on "The Bakery" RPi chatroom?

SlySvenI make use of the chat-room facilities provided on Stack Exchange, in particular I visit the main one specifically for the Raspberry Pi, i.e. "The Bakery". It is possible to be notified when someone addresses or targets a message to someone who has been there (recently I believe) - I would like...

is going to be un-held or consigned to the graveyard - I have edited it but no response yet...

11:33 PM
Note to self: Euros and Pounds are not the same thing.
I ordered something that was listed in pounds, and reread it as euros in my head. I must look like an idiot to their customer service :P

@Jacobm001 why would you care about either of them?

Because the charge on my account ended up being significantly more than I expected.
I ordered one of these: blinkstick.com/products/blinkstick-strip, and it's case. It doesn't do the conversion for you. Apparently, the dumb American doesn't do well with fancy European monetary units.

@Jacobm001 hmm, why would you care about any?

I get pleasantly surprised when I get something from a well-know international auction website from the US of A. At present I'm awaiting the delivery of a remote control for an AV-tuner/amplifier I've had for ages but I'd bought it second-hand with no remote - the Shipping/Delivery of a new one from there is about 66% of the unit cost but with the exchange rate that comes out to about £23 - not too bad as I can't find the exact one even second hand in the UK (it's a USA made unit "Sherwood")...
@Jacobm001 Not for a RPi without a powered Hub I take it?

@SlySven Pff, I'm using a 600mA charger, and that'll be plenty.
But don't worry, when my RPi starts to randomly crash, I'll make sure to ask a question without bothering to search anything before hand.

11:49 PM
600mA - which Pi then? That unit says 500mA max does it not?

@SlySven, your advise is very much welcome

Probably the RPi B Rev 2 with a proper 2 mA charger.
*2A charger

@Ghanima If I can just stop one uninformed individual from electrocuting themselves or a family member my life has not been in vain...
