ok, ok, please stop it

Stop what?

the voting rampage

I'm not on a voting rampage... At least not more than normal

Mwahahahah...!

just because I mentioned some zero-vote answers I got a few upvotes, not that I don't like it, (slysven coined the phrase meat-puppetry - well it seems to work) insert evil laughter here
bakery seems to not work well for me
today
posts are missing, new messages do not come up

12:17 AM
Well what are vote form if not for - picking out the good stuff both questions and answers...
According to my system tray my network connection is not connected (well not managed) which seems a bit strange - though I did frob something yesterday so perhaps that is it...
@Ghanima Well how long to 10K for you at the current rate then?

hehe
well, i am in no hurry

I'm so close to 3k...

well, unless @Jacobm001 stages his coup de etas

@Ghanima Do I really need to stage a coup? I'm the youngest in here by a large margin, I could just wait for you all to die in the next few months :P
I will miss you, but that's the circle of life after all :P

@Jacobm001 I hope the old man does not read this
just one more question for the refiner badge

12:25 AM
*ponders whether to flag a moderator about @Jacobm001 - just to watch for any fireworks*

be lucky you're not flagged for using your medieval sysVinit ;)

@Ghanima Tried and tested sysVinit, flawed - yes, but with a significant knowledge base and established practices - which the usurpers' try to replace with their own twisted logic/magic while not always covering all the bases...
8-P

;)
granted

Only 10 more votes for "Electorate"

I guess SMF is the only one
@Jacobm001 cant help you with that (other than temporary suspension) ready the fireworks

12:36 AM
@Ghanima you could ask more questions :P

yea, that's probably right
that seems not to be my strong suite
but I need another question for some strange bronze badge

I still haven't gotten the student badge. Which is only one vote :P
I've just given up on those.
You're going after Curious
?

it's "recommended"
fanatic is also not im possible
26 more days to go

Lol, I have it showing "fanatic", not whatever it wants to show me :P
I have 39 left.

it's more or less just waiting

12:59 AM
and again it's way to late
good night, you kids have fun

Night, Ghanima

15 hours later…
4:26 PM
I got the electorate badge. :) Now I don't need to vote anymore, right? :P
@SteveRobillard: I find it amusing that you both answered and closed this question :P

Q: Cant login to rasberrypi

loganI just got my Raspberry pi and I was setting up the timezone and some other things, and when it restarted it wanted a login and password that I do not know. Is there any way to reset it? I did go into boot and click on the first command on accident, Could that be it?

@Jacobm001 I had originally posted a comment while looking for the dupe, when I couldn't find it in a few minutes I gave up after a few hours sleep I did a more thorough search and then closed it.

@SteveRobillard Fine with me. I think it makes the site feel more welcoming if users get some interaction while it's pending being closed.
Has the "topic of the week" ever been changed?

me too
topic of the week???

Top right under The Bakery
Topic of the week is First Time Raspberry Pi Usage (The official room for raspberrypi.stackexchange.com)

never noticed so I ma guessing no

4:37 PM
lol
Maybe we should change it to random things and see if anyone notices.
I feel like How not to power a Raspberrry Pi would be related to @SlySven's life purposes lately.
Or How to configure your damn wifi :P

how about how to google

5:04 PM
Don't Google - unless you turn of all that tracking stuff that then "helpfully hides answers that don't fit your Worldview" - instead I use DuckDuckGo - who don't filter the results they send you...
Topic of the Week: "What did you pull out of your Pi this Christmas?"

5:29 PM
@SteveRobillard: lmgtfy.com?
:P

@Jacobm001 get your pi 0 from adafruit now
42 left

I'm pretty sure I've used up my toy budget for the next while... I'll wait until I have an actual idea as to what I'm going to do with it.

been there

Yeah, Erika gets mad if I spend too much money on electronic toys, and then don't leave money for useless things... like diapers... Sucks to be a grownup sometimes! :P

think you need to sell it to her as an electronic aid you could build it into the diaper bag as areminder to pick some up at the store

5:38 PM
I was thinking maybe as a less stupid version of Amazon Dash?

or to change the babies disaper or empty the diaper genie thing

It could have a few dozen items on it instead of one.

yeah add some nice neopixels a temp/humidity sensor and the ubiquitous wifi
maybe a piezo buzzer for alerting you could have an ediaper thaat tweets when it needs changing
and sends alerts to nagios

This is getting expensive, fast :P

yeah but if you build the first one you can have a kickstarter and becomen the next steve jobs

5:50 PM
How about you build it, and I'll become the next Bill Gates?

Just saying, when it comes to wealth, I don't care after a certain point, and Steve Jobs is dead.

at some point however you could buy the RPi foundation and make them design a Pi with USB3, SATA, Wifi, and over 9000 GPIO!

@Ghanima Yeah, but at that point we'd probably be on USB5...

you better hurry

5:56 PM
don't forget the activated charcoal hepa filter for the bag
@Ghanima what did I miss yesterday motorcycles with sidecars and machine guns

@SteveRobillard We were talking about how unnerved I was on my visit back to the homeland.

and jacobs diaper bag empire today
isn't the us your homeland

You should put that as the weekly topic. Today a Raspberry Pi - Zero. Tomorrow, a diaper empire!
@SteveRobillard Yes, but Corvallis is now home. I went down to Grants Pass for Christmas.

lol I was thinking the same thins

A Wifi transponder in the nappy (diaper?) - may be Okay from a Toddler security PoV - get an alarm if it leaves Home LAN range - but you'd probably get concerns about an active RF source so close to a youngster (mind you the age at which kids get mobiles these days....)

5:59 PM
Southern Oregon is VERY, VERY different from the Willamette Valley

don't under estimate the diaper bag idea people will spend a fortune on babies and dogs
though you have one I don't need to tell you

I have both :-/

@SteveRobillard Not sure there's much call for nappies on dogs! 8-P

@SlySven Oh, you'd be surprised.

and when it comes to babies peole will buy almost anything I was in babies r us with a friend a few years ago and they sold glow in the dark diapers

6:02 PM
A lot of things sold for babies are also the exact same thing as what's sold for kids, with a 50-100% markup.
Literally, 0 difference.

and baby shaped diapers I nearly got thrown out when I asked the employee what shape the other diapers were elephant, giraffe, cow they didn't find it amusing at all

@SteveRobillard Well if it is an active toddler - might help to avoid tripping over them in the dark when checking on them.

if a diaper needs changing you don't need glow in the dark to find it nor so you want to do it in the dark

Unless it glowed a different colour when wet?
$$$ Idea $$$

@SlySven They already make diapers that change color when wet.
Seems like a pretty logical extension.

6:04 PM
what like glow in the dark litmus paper used by diabetics

But not luminously so?

@SlySven Not that I'm aware of.

I think a tweet or text alert would be more appropraite for the pi

@SteveRobillard Huh - I'm Type 1 D BTW!

But note: I already spend ~$40 a month on diapers, and that's buying in bulk at Costco. I will adamantly refuse anything more expensive :P

6:06 PM
Or a raspberry? ]8-)

it is less common know wth meters but one of the things diabetics do is check the Ph of thier urine

@SteveRobillard That's inefficient...

yeah now that there are meters every where but that was not always the case

Not pH but sugar - back in the days before blood tests you have to get a sample of Piss (5 drops) + 10 drops of water and a colour changing tablet in a small test tube then read the colour off on a chart...

I'm surprised they didn't use Saliva. It's much a much more direct indicator.

6:07 PM
no more expensive the pi tweeter can be an addon pack to the diaper

I meant the glowing shit would be more expensive.

depends on what you feed the baby

Also, what chemicals are you putting on my precious angel to get it to glow? I'm not sure that's acceptable... Unless it gives her mutant superpowers. Then sign me up.

lol
topic of the day hack your baby

@Jacobm001 Probably volumetric - you'd need a lot of spit - also the excess blood sugar is excreted by kidneys so shows up strongly in badly/untreated diabetes.

6:09 PM
@SlySven: Makes sense. I was thinking spit because it's a more "current" indicator, whereas urine can give a false result since it doesn't really "update". Poor phrasing I'm sorry :-/

why are we shopping for saws now

"hack your baby"
That's a "hacksaw"...
nvm
I'm a horrible person.

Oh, is baby saw (sore)?

you are suggesting sawing a baby and I am @SlySven is bad because of the chemicals that make her poop glow

No, you suggested "hacking" them. That's just where my mind went :P

6:12 PM
old school hack

That would be an axe not a saw surely?

do you have a secret desire to be a magiciab
suddenly hearing the lumberjack song

Not really.

waits for @SteveRobillard reply: "No and don't call me Shirley!"

over roger

6:14 PM
@SlySven I feel like I might be too young for this reference.

do a google search for the lumberjack song and the last couple of references come from the move airport

What is with you people and Monty Python? :P

@Jacobm001 Airplane/Naked Gun etc. Leslie Nieson

I am not a huge monty python fan but I have seen the movies and my brother in loves making references to it

I've done the LumberJack song in AmDram

6:17 PM
I know @Ghanima is a fan. Especially of the parrot bit.

how can you live in oregon and not know the lumberjack store I figured that would be the musak they played in elevators and the grocery store

It often follows on (sung by the Shop Keeper) after the infamous Dead Parrot Sketch

isn't flannel oregon camoflage

No, it's Oregon all purpose, all weather wear
Camo is worn by a different type of hillbilly.

6:18 PM
We have both
I used to teach at a scout camp, and that's actually how we references flannel. It's always really hard to pound it into people's heads that it's a terrible choice for extended outdoor wear.

yeah flannel alone is really old school

Like Denim (Jeans) - holds on to dampness?

but I loe my flannel lined carhart pants

@SlySven: yeah, in general, cotten is a horrible choice. It not only holds dampness, but when cotton is wet, it loses the ability to retain heat.

I was a runner before arthritis and when I started we did not have lycra and gortex wwe ran in cotton sweats and when it was wet you would wear shorts over them to help hold them up

6:23 PM
@SteveRobillard Gross

and socks that came up almost to our knees

Nevermind, it too me a minute to realize that you meant wet weather, and not drenching them with sweat :P
@SteveRobillard With flipflops?

just imagine what they weighed after a long run in the rain

@SteveRobillard wait, you had socks? the story used to be w/o socks

@Ghanima Pretty sure that was when he was walking to school.

6:27 PM
up to my knees with colored stripes
we had no shoes and everything cost a nickel
and it was uphill both ways

That poor during the great depression, eh?
Couldn't even afford shoes?

Glad you survived. I hope you didn't have to eat your own pony.

pony we couldn't afford no pony

@SteveRobillard can you do a (UK)Yorkshire accent: "When I were a lad" on YouTube

6:34 PM
@SlySven As opposed to what other Yorkshire?

can I have some more please sir

Some poor sod's ud no't know 'owt 'bout Yorkshire...

no one would believe this conversation started with jacob's diaper bag empire
2

We have really odd conversations.

Its gone up? since then?

6:37 PM
nor that we are all guys we have covered fashion exercise babys lumberjacks and diapers reads more like the table of contents of a womans magazine

Nothin' bout shoes - or perhaps a passin' reference in't Yorkshire past stuff.

lol
keep it up laughing makes me forget how much y hip and knees hurt today

Must confess amount of coding done yesterday 0% - amount of stuff on RPi SE/Chat 100%
OTOH gained 130 rep so far today and am all out of up-votes...

@SteveRobillard: did you get a chance to send that blinkstick?

Maybe get RepCap badge.

6:42 PM
not yrt I have not had a chance to solder one up for you I need a day when my hands work properly
but i did not forget

@SteveRobillard Okay, np. I'm not in a hurry, just wanted to make sure it wasn't lost in the post somewhere.

@SteveRobillard commiserations!

I will let you know when I mail it out
@SlySven thanks just the facts of life here - especially since it turned to winter in the last week

B4N - need to get some tea (meal)...

Erika has the same problem with soldering on her off days. Makes these projects take a lot longer: dropbox.com/s/u9111b1subuki09/2014-02-19%2011.24.25.jpg?dl=0

6:43 PM
wait a minute your wife can solder
I am so jealous does she have a sister

Yeah, I can too.
Several.
She's the oldest of 9

does she use one of those big fat sticks for that

Yeah. It's on the big side for electronics.

8 sisters dad must of had an outhouse for himself

No, she's the oldest of 9 kids. It's her, then 4 boys, then 3 girls, and then 1 boy.

6:45 PM
so you can imagine how when my habds hurt and don't work holding the soldering iron can be hard

For sure.

wow don't see big families like that much anymore why are they not on tlc

They should be.
Her parents are fucking loons.

all hey need is one brother who is a 600lb dwarf couponer
are you hoping it skips a generation

The rest of the family is fine. Her mother has some pretty serious mental health issues, and her father is an abusive loser, but everyone else in her family is fine.

6:48 PM
I got one for you
I married the preacher's daughter and got married in Montral where I was living so most of my family didn't know many people at the wedding and vice versa
background I was adopted by my aunt but someone decided I should also invite the biological father to the wedding

By your wording, that sounds like a poor choice.

so at the wedding my grandmother was doing introductions hi I ma steve's grandmother and this is my son steve;s dad and my daughter steve's mon
I spent the entire recpetion explaining that while it was true my family was not from west virginia

I'm so glad my wedding went off without any kind of issues.
I've really heard some horror stories.

I worked as the cathedral verger when I lived in Montreal the best thing I ever saw was a bride who was made aware that the groom slept with one of the bridesmaids the night before the wedding walked down the aisle got to the question about objections and said she had one you could have heard a pin drop and whe said that the minister should marry the groom nd bridesmaid since they were together last night and walked slowly down the aisle and out of the church

Oh, God. That's movie level drama.
I was the best man at my friend's wedding last summer. We were in a town called Halfway (look it up middle of nowhere), and it was 104 degrees, with an outdoor wedding. IN SUITS.

7:04 PM
that must have been loads of fun
halfway to what

There are two tiny ass towns roughly 45 minutes in opposite directions. Back in the day, they were both too small to support separate post offices. So one was put "halfway" between the two.
It has a population of less than 300 people.
And it's crazy hard to get to. It's nestled in a little valley. It's a beautiful area, and I'm glad I got to see it, but I don't think I'll ever need to return :P

the church side of me is thinking halfway to hell
especially given the temp
how often doees it get that hot in oregon

That really depends on the part of Oregon.
Southern Oregon (south of the Saxton pass) usually sees a month of 90-100ish weather. East of the Cascades is where the sand people live, and it's either really fucking hot, or really fucking cold (high desert). The coast is almost always pleasant, and the Willamette Valley is usually pretty temperate and we will usually get a few short bursts of 90+, but they don't last long (usually).
This week, the highs are between 40-50F in Corvallis.
*45-50

40 sounds nice we have been in the single digits most of the week

I'm sure that doesn't help your hands any.

7:21 PM
no and I needed to go out yesterday as you can imagine when you are walking you are making a little heat but not when sitting in the wheel chair

Gloves help at all?
I've never used them, but I've seen styles that have pouches on the back of the hand to hold hand warmers.

yeah, I have those but it isn't just my hands unfortunately that s why I have the flannel lined pants
and a parka good for -15
especaially given where I live in the center of town 1/4 mile gets me to the pharmacy, bank supermarket etc so I can leave the supermarket and roll right into the kitchen with the groceries
doesn't make sense to take the van

Nice. Now all you need is a heated seat on the WC.

nice idea maybe a little curtain heater in front of my feat like the foot heater setting in a car

You might need an RTG to power it (like in the Martian) though. Are you okay with carrying around a decaying nuclear isotope?

7:29 PM
sure I am already in a WC what is the worst that can happen not like I can be in wc

Seems like the best case scenario is you getting mutant super powers.
All I'm saying, is that when you takeover the world, please remember you have a friend in Oregon. I don't mind being an underling, I'll even manage the slaves for you! :P

does NASA burry RTGs in oregon or what?

Sorry, @Ghanima. That's a state secret.

2 hours later…
9:32 PM
@Jacobm001 Like this one?
Gives whole new meaning to expression "In the hot seat"!
If it overheats then one might end up with a (Colgate) "ring of confidences" as the old strap-line for that Brand of (UK) toothpaste went.

@SlySven I meant like what's in my car... My aunt has toilets with built in heaters. I find them disturbing.

*Ooops* confused Wheel-chair for Water-Closet! *blush*

AC'ing the house down to 15°C (yes, C, I'll never get the hang of your F) and heat the toilet seats, sounds somewhat compelling

Chat clients should have built in conversions for C to F and vice versa

15°C sounds a little too cool 18-20 for comfort, 16-18 for economy (with a woolly jumper).

9:40 PM
Why the hell would you cool the house that much?
59 degrees!?
I mean, I understand why @goldilocks would like that, but he's a bear.

If it is winter and he is of a type to hibernate.

just a random number

Oooh, got the (bronze) mortarboard badge only 17 with it.

now go for the other one, the crazy, do that another 49 times over

Epic 50 times (silver) or Legendary 200 times (gold) - that is not gonna happen anytime soon I think! 8-)

9:47 PM
has never been awarded
not even to @goldilocks

It's kind of weird how many people think the RPi can be used to replace equipment that costs 1000s of dollars.

do they? who did?

There's a question where someone wants the RPi to record sound at 500k sps, or I've met a lot of people that seem to think an RPi can run giant scale web applications.
I had someone ask me in person the other day if I thought a couple RPis or BeagleBoneBlacks could replace the school's central database server. Luckily, they don't come anywhere close to making those decisions...

but joan did almost achieve the 500 k ;)

No, she almost achieved a sample rate of 500k, but it didn't return usable results.
And at 100% CPU, it certainly wouldn't be a sustainable practice.

10:03 PM
since the OP failed to specify the sample memory depth and just sample rate, it's pretty easy to achieve
go to sleep or watch the old Bond movie?

Bond movies.
Sleep is for the weak

@Jacobm001 I am so tired today, I'd rather consider myself weak
furthermore, there are no questions coming up on rpi today, epic is unreachable anyways, there's no rep in edits, banning jacob gets boring with repetition
3

10:59 PM
@Jacobm001 and a canadian = polar bear at that

@SteveRobillard He looks like a grizzly to me.

@Jacobm001 thats canadian camoflage and instead of deer urine to cover his scent he uses maple syrup

Ah, that makes sense.
Polar bears can change colors based on his diet... Maybe he's just really full of shit? isegoria.net/2003/07/polar-bear-turns-purple-after-medication

11:16 PM
that's why his eyes are brown
so need to get a 3d printer blog.adafruit.com/2016/01/07/…

Nifty. The school has a few that students can use. I'm wonder what the learning curve on that is...
