Q: Should the (permutation-cycles) tag be deleted?

Morgan RodgersSomeone just created this tag today, and added it to three questions. As written, the description is... the most generic thing ever, basically "anything associated with permutation groups and permutation cycles". Given that there is already a (permutations) tag, what purpose does the (permutation...

Morgan RodgersI suggest eliminating the tag (permutation-cycles). Someone just this tag today, and added it to three questions. Q: Permutations with no common symbols

starsuperLet $\sigma$ and $\tau$ be permutations with no common symbols, and $\sigma \tau = e$, then $\sigma = \tau = e$. Should I denote the permutations as cycles or transpositions? How to write them with the fact that they does not have common symbols? What I really need is the way to write this so I g...

Q: Showing simple transpositions given a permutation

user6259845Consider the permutation $(2,6,3,4,5) \in S_6$. Then it's transposition form would be $(2,5), (2,4), (2,3), (2,6)$. But I don't understand how to show that $(2,6,3,4,5) \in S_6$ can be written as a product of simple transpositions. I know a transposition, $\sigma \in S_n$, is simple if it is of ...

Q: Why write permutations as disjoint cycles and transpositions?

anonanon444Apologies in advance if this isn’t an appropriate question for this website. I was reading an introduction to groups book which explained you can write permutations as a product of disjoint cycles and then further that you can write a cycle as a product of transpositions. What is the benefit of t...

@BillWallis Maybe you already know that, but the tag you have recently created has been discussed on meta: Should the (permutation-cycles) tag be deleted? and Tag management 2018. After you see this comment, feel free to ping me in tagging chatroom, so that I know it can be deleted. — Martin Sleziak 1 min ago

José Carlos SantosProposal to eliminate the infinitedivisibility tag This tag has no usage guidance and it was used so far for a single question. I suggest that we eliminate it.

@MartinSleziak I did not know about the discussion. In fact, I was unaware that there was a tag management question at all --- had I known about it, I would've proposed the discussion myself (thank you for making me aware). I don't use the chatrooms so I'm not sure how to ping you on there, but before it gets deleted I would like to put forward my case for keeping the tag first on the tag management question. — Bill Wallis 4 hours ago

@MartinSleziak Has there been any recent discussion on the tag coincidences? In the suggested edit review queue, one user provided both a tag description and tag-wiki for it, and I'm suspecting it was recently created? Only 17 posts have been tagged with that tag. — amWhy 3 mins ago
@amWhy AFAICT the tag was created in February by Michael Hardy, but I do not recall any discussion on meta. — Martin Sleziak 58 secs ago
I see. I think the editor I refer to spends a lot of time filling out "empty" tags with no usage guides, etc. Would it be best for me, @MartinSleziak, to post on the meta link you provide above, or in the tag-chatroom, to suggest it be removed? — amWhy 44 secs ago
@amWhy I suppose you mean the tag in the previous comment. I'd guess the best way to suggest tag removal is on meta. Here in chat it would be less visible. (Not so many users visit this chat room. And support on meta makes hte suggestion kind of "more official")
Oh, now I see that you have already posted this (although at the moment the post is deleted): math.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/27653/tag-management-2018/… And now undeleted :-)

amWhyI noticed that a new tag has been created this year, apparently in February. I first noticed it today, while reviewing a suggested tag-wiki for the tag. I do not think the coincidences tag is necessary, nor helpful, and it currently applies only to 17 questions on MSE.

@MartinSleziak Yes, I just expanded a bit on the post, including info you provided, and undeleted. I sort of figured there'd be more exposure on meta.

@amWhy Perhaps we could delete our comments on the elementary-probability question... I'd say they are unrelated to the topic.

@MartinSleziak Indeed!

In case some information from those comments is needed, they are "archived" above.
Done!

DidThe tag conditional-probability has been deleted/subsumed/transformed into the tag probability, thus making invisible any question involving conditional probabilities conditioned by a continuous random variable or, most notably, conditioned by an infinite sigma-algebra. This most unwise decision ...
