That is indeed the thing. If you accept a proprietary component, you are building a fence around you. If all the other components are free, you can still at least move freely within the fence. If an additional component is non-free, you build another fence inside the other one. Add more layers, and you can never escape.

My goal: Creating a working walk-around game before the end of this year. I have no idea what I am getting into.
Summary of my programming experience: I know the web stack (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). I can use the bash shell to automate tasks on my computer. I have a beginner experience with C, and can make very simple GUI's with it using GTK+. Beyond that, I know a ton of math. So I have no experience at all working with game engines or 3D graphics.
