@kimholder I think it is pretty clear what kind of thing the first 3D VMC is going to be. Am I right that a first step is a walk-around game, just a model you can walk around in?
yes. just something where you can take a good look, and learn about all the things in it.
realistic physics would be nice.
but the main thing is to get it up, and for it to look good. If we can get to that point, my guess is that people who are interested in adding to it and improving it will appear
This is the big thing about keeping it open source. with time i am seeing your point that we can't afford for any of it to be restricted by the game engine company or anyone else.
That is indeed the thing. If you accept a proprietary component, you are building a fence around you. If all the other components are free, you can still at least move freely within the fence. If an additional component is non-free, you build another fence inside the other one. Add more layers, and you can never escape.
we may have lost Sam because his Unity skills don't apply. Or maybe he is just busy, or has found something more interesting to do.
but hey, it was just a first shot at looking for volunteers.
turns out i really don't know how to explain to them what needs to be done next anyhow
so i'm working on that...

Here is the stack the moonbase guys used:
All the components have problems.
My goal: Creating a working walk-around game before the end of this year. I have no idea what I am getting into.
Summary of my programming experience: I know the web stack (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). I can use the bash shell to automate tasks on my computer. I have a beginner experience with C, and can make very simple GUI's with it using GTK+. Beyond that, I know a ton of math. So I have no experience at all working with game engines or 3D graphics.
On the other hand, what YOU need is an expert, but your project is not ready enough for it to be interesting for one yet. What you have got so far is a student.

@Hohmannfan i think we have done pretty well so far. if we completed the models for what we have come up with and put them into a basic environment, i think the rest would come together
i am not sure how much the game engine could do for you, so you could cut down on the coding
gravity in blender is a slider, you set it to what you want
it also has rigid body physics simulations set up, and easy to use
the kickstarter for the moonbase alpha guys was $480,000
I can certainly not match anything they made, even that first game that totally flopped is way beyond what a single student can manage. But it can be fun trying to put something together.
