@BenjaminLim there's a "primary phase", too. Nominations are set and we're supposed to read the nominees' stances on all kinds of things we happen to find crucial for our giving the votes to them, like "when to close", "what about homework", and so on. Browse the election tag on meta.

Each phase is about a week, if I remember correctly.

It can be generalized to measurable spaces by introducing so-called irreducibility measures. This construction is used a lot when they talk about transience and recurrence
