using jacobians seems gainlessly tedious
why not just split the domain up?
But that's what I did.
But one has to justify the cancellation properly.
writing something as simple as $\int_{A\cup-A}f=\int_Af+\int_{-A}f=\int_Af+\int_A-f=0$ should not be that complicated imo
Well, I wrote it out simple and with words, and added the more rigorous proof.
00:28
@Chris'ssis $$\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{n^n\Gamma(1/n)}{(n+1)^{n+1}}$$
How?!

1 hour later…

01:56
Evening, folks
hey
Da physicist is in town.
@pedro Indeed! And very much scratching my head over all this differential-forms business
The banana is in town.
Maxwell's Equations in 6+1 dimensions......... ugh not clear
02:00
@KevinDriscoll Cool, you studying multivar calc?
I don't think I'd call differential forms multivar calc
@Pedro Nope, just trying ot figure out if the electromagnetic scalar potential still satisfies the inhomogenous wave equations in 6+1 dimensions
turns out though that for n>4 dimensions, everyone writes Maxwell's equations using the language of differential forms
hey guys would anyone be willing to check out my question. math.stackexchange.com/questions/668993/… Thanks.
@mike I checked out the gre site. Am I right that the general test is computer based and the subject test is paper based?
yes the general test is computer based. i took it yesterday
not sure about the subject test
02:05
@JasperLoy That's correct. And the generla test you can take whenever (at one of their test centers), but the subject has specific dates.
i got a 319 on my general gre is that a good score?
you can look up percentile ranking
I guess I will take the gre in Sep/Oct of Year X and send in the applications in Nov/Dec of Year X for admission in the autumn of Year X+1.
if you're applying for math programs, what you got in quant matters more than anything else
a 165/170
02:07
that's good
wait 165/reading 170/quant?
oh no
oh
165 math and 154 reading
165 out of 170
yeah you should be fine with that math score
I think the test is stupid, but it is the only test there is.
02:11
Really @Mike ? Thats seems to be 91st percentile. I feel like I remember that our physics department prefers you are in the 95%+
OH pffffffffff
nevermind fuck me
they only require a 155 here
I am afraid I won't do too well in the test...
so i should retake it then?
No you'll be fine I think
my expectations are CLEARLY way off
I think I will just do my best and take each test once.
What's that test?
02:13
GRE general test and subject test.
@JasperLoy For me it was just an exercise in staying calm and reading the questions carefully. They were not conceptually complex.
@KevinDriscoll Yeah, those numbers are fine. 155 is a bit low but 165 would pass any cutoff.
@KevinDriscoll I hated the general because it would often give mathematically nonsense questions. I distinctly remember one that was like "What's the next term in this sequence?"
Oh
psychotechnic questions
@Mike I got a 790 (old score) on the quantitative part of the general GRE and some of my physics classmates make fun of me for it. They all got 800, of course.
oh the gre quant is complete stupid
02:15
@mike I have gotten rid of my 112 books finally, don't be mad...
@Mike yeah I'm not sure how they justify that kind of thing given that the answer could really be anything if you're given only the first few elements
@JasperLoy Did you not donate them?
@Mike Yeah I mean people who entered PhD studies the same year as me
Yeah I realized.
@Mike No, I did not donate them...
02:16
@JasperLoy Feel bad.
@Mike Thanks, lol.
@KevinDriscoll Anyway, meh, those tests are dumb. The ones that matter are the subjects.
Haha ya its all very tounge-in-cheek
I really wanted ot get >800 on the physics subject test but I only managed 750
I did pretty well on the math test, but I missed a couple easy mistakes
You mean made.
02:17
Yes
The GRE site is very confusing.
I took a long time to figure out what I needed to.
@mike Do your lecturers give you lecture notes for most of the classes?
@JasperLoy No.
03:15
This question is super odd. Especially the answer the teacher gave to it...
I trust you all are familliar with characteristic functions, right?
Sure
Nevermind. I misread it. Need more sleep I guess...
So it's not odd at all?
Nah, I just skipped a simple note
That made it the easiest question on earth..
It terrifies me it might happen on the test..
04:03
@Singh In your time zone, no doubt.
04:14
^^ Best title ever?
04:51
@mick What about it is confusing to you?
Probably you need a little ring/field theory to understand that.
05:12
@anon HAI
hai
wuzz poppin'
saw movie with family
meh
which one?
lone survivor
05:13
what about?
wondering if left units automatically right units in group algebras
that's what the movie was about?
your family must've been thrilled
2
@PedroTamaroff operation red wings in afghanistan
haha
oh that movie?
the trailer looked terrible
05:15
the movie was good
i'm watching the departed
damn good movie
so many good actors
seemed like another generic oorah support our troops movie we get twenty of in a year
departed is one of my favorite movies
LOL scene at porn cinema
nicholson is hilarious
it also annoyed me they had the gall to use "heroes" for the trailer soundtrack considering it's ironic and not at all supporting killing the shit out of people
of course i still have not seen the movie, so
05:17
good movies i've seen this week: lego movie, les miserables, thor II
i'm surprised that lego movie is apparently good
the lego movie is hilarious... kid movies have so many gags from grown ups.
specially funny for lego fans
there are... lego in-jokes?
aha
fantabolous
05:19
one of the characters is a piece I used to own
hehehehehe
as I understand it americans were positioned to take out a taliban leader. the op was compromised in the very begining when some goat herders stumbled upon them hiding. there was a debate about whether to kill them, tie them up, or let them go (two of the three were children). they decided to let them go, which lead to them getting their asses handed to them a bit later with gunmen all over.
one guy survives, and gets saved by villagers (while one of the children they let go were tali, the other one and the old man were civilians, and their tribe was then honor-bound to help the americans).
/spoilers
that's a much better story than the trailer told
UGH 0 upvote accept
which mostly implied the second paragraph was gonna be shooting them all
@PedroTamaroff OP can't upvote, look at his numbers
reputation
it's funny he's spongebob square pants
@Mike any movie you like?
05:24
i hate all films
that's almost like hating all music
i do that too
what about 12 angry men
come on.
pedro can attest
what about audrey hepburn
05:24
i don't actually like a whole lot of older movies
12 angry is an oldie goodie. where'd you come across it pedro?
my favorite movie from last year was the place beyond the pines
ryan gosling bats eyes
a friend of mine recommended it... I watched it twice in a day
haha. pines was one movie I wanted to see but didn't.
that movie is just pure wonder
has anyone watched "el angel exterminador"?
I don't know what's it called in english
let me google
05:26
I have watched very few nonenglish films, and that is not one I've heard of
@anon i strongly suggest it. don't look up the plot or anything. it's one of those things you want to experience w/o knowing the plot
this year's oscar season was kind of ass
I already know it involves a bank heist and some father caught between a rock and a hard place and beyond the pines is his bolthole or something. just from my memory of the trailer.
that's fine, trailer said just the right amount
just don't go readin' a plot summary
seen The Room?
05:28
fortunately no
haha. it should be in textbooks on the theory of film, if that exists.
@anon doesn't ring Abel
of course that exists
film theory's a discipline :p
anyone seen the tree of life
wierd movie
have you seen holy mountain
05:31
nopew
do it
surrealist movie
dope
literally
=D
well the exterminating angel is also surrealist
it is mentioned by owen wilson in "midnight in paris"
when he actually meets Buñuel, the director, and suggests the plot
and Buñuel is "dafaq are you saying"
i do not take owen wilson as a good source for film advice
it is just a gag in woody's allen film
no biggie
woody's allen film?
05:34
yeah
midnight in paris
stars owen wilson,
it's "woody allen's film"
anyone watched the skin I live in?
LOL
sorry about that
u should be
im watching the movie so half me brainz is on the other screen
05:48
you should watch there will be blood
i watched it man
didn't you tell me to?
its funny how the title ends up being true
heh
i probably did, i love that movie
you should watch 12 angry men
as reciprocication
is that even a word?
i've seen it
it's fun
i actually was in a stage version of that
you saw it?

05:52
it was terrible, I feel bad for anyone who paid money to see us forget our lines
OH

an inspector calls is a good one
not during school, but i've read plays, yes
my favorite play of all time is waiting for godot
