@JohhanSantana Congrats! I've yet to buy any hardcopies, but I have bought it twice digitally.
02:23
@JohhanSantana Bene!
@Adam I don't think you'll need two heads any more.
02:38
@Cerberus Depending on how people vote I might not need any heads. ;)
03:08
@Adam Thus far, I suspect you might.
@Cerberus I guess I should avoid selling off all my hats, then.
@Adam Haha, indeed.
You do some teaching, don't you, @Cerberus? Ever thought about teaching a Latin course online?

@Adam I'm using the app. It's a little buggy and seems to outsource the chat to the system browser, but it's still quite convenient.

@JoonasIlmavirta I have it installed but I'm at a computer so much I don't use it frequently. It is nice for notifications, though. I also get notifications to my apple watch, but I don't recall off the top of my head if that's because an app specifically for the watch or not.
13:32
@Adam Does the app do notifications? I can't remember anymore, but I must have switched it off. This is one of the many things, alongside email, where want to actively check and not be notified. But it's good if they cater to different preferences.
@JoonasIlmavirta It does, but if you don't see them I'd assume you have that disabled in your iOS notification preferences (or Android if you use that). The notifications are really only useful for your own content or other content you've engaged with along with chat.
I still check the site here and there during the day since there are no notifications for new posts. I'm not sure if you can turn on notifications for things flagged to moderators. That would be nice if it did, though.
@Adam The app doesn't have any of the moderator tools. It sometimes happens that I see something that requires action on my phone and then switch to the computer to act.
@Adam I think you can select "favorite" or "followed" tags on the front page. I'm not sure if it leads to any notifications, though.
13:47
@JoonasIlmavirta My guess is yes, but I'd have to try it to confirm.
13:58
@Adam Hmm... It might make sense to have FAQ posts on meta about "what are favourite tags?" and "what can I do and not do on the app?". There might be versions on other metas and especially the main meta, but having some things covered on our meta briefly with links to additional information would be useful.
But it's far from urgent.
Yea, something like that could link to the main metas but be more contextual for this site
Exactly. If the information is up to date and compactly presented with links elsewhere, it should be of some use.

A fourth candidate! This is developing into a race...

1 hour later…
17:49
@JoonasIlmavirta It does look to be shaping up that way! Interesting to see who chooses to throw their hat into the ring.
@Adam And with four candidates I think it's paying off to have the meta questionnaire and the automatic summary on the election page. Those give a good quick summary of each one.
18:14
@JoonasIlmavirta Yes, that should help provide a lot of great context and detail for people when making a choice of who to vote for.
@Adam The voting system allows you to put the candidates in your order of preference, so it makes a difference to have a nuanced opinion.
@JoonasIlmavirta Interesting. I was wondering how they handled voting when it's not a binary choice.
@Adam Very few countries have a binary choice in their elections anyway, mind you.
If you go to the "election" phase tab of the election page, it gives you some details. But it's pretty clear when the voting starts; you get to put as many candidates as you like in order.
19:13
In a nutshell, the two candidates with most votes get the post. There's just a system of transferring the votes to your next preferences if the result is certain (your choice is either certainly in or certainly out).
That makes sense.
Very exciting, though!
@Adam It is! I've seen many SE elections, but this one is different for a couple of reasons: I'm an old moderator, and this is a community I really care about.
And it's great that people get to have a proper choice. Extending the nomination period was a good call from SE.
@JoonasIlmavirta I very much agree that extending the nomination phase was a good idea. I felt uncomfortable with proceeding without actual votes from site members.
19:43
@Adam So did I, but SE came forward with the extension idea without local input. They've seen many elections and know how they work.

@Adam in your question the answer there has some stuff that reads Plin. 2, 73, 75, § 183 sq. What does these numbers and symbol means?
23:24
Plin. = Pliny (probably the Elder).
§ = section
sq. = (et) sequens: "and following".
23:44
You can read the actual text on Perseus, too: Plin. Nat. 2.78
Yay!
Good 'ole, Pliny, the elder.
There's actually a local beer here called Pliny the elder. I think they also make a 'pliny the younger' beer, too.
Pretty cool name.
I'd drink that.
