@user130018 I dislike Munkres. I avoid using the word terrible, because some people dislike hearing that word. When I say terrible, I mean I dislike it.
@user130018 It is a high quality, cheap Dover paperback
any of you people know how to divide a z=5(x^2+y^2) where z<=5 parabaloid into two halves using a z plane? I thought I'd use the center of mass in respect to z but it didn't work
@ZachSaucier so then compute the volume of the solid, then compute the volume of the part of the solid underneath the plane z=n, then set the latter equal to half the former and solve for n
@Committingtoachallenge you mean like lebesgue, riemann, etc.? I don't think about that kind of stuff. or do you mean tactics for evaluating integrals?
@Committingtoachallenge not sure, it's been awhile since I've thought seriously about integrals, and haven't paying much attention. the only two I notice ever are robjohn and chris's sis, and I think they are pretty similar at manipulations (although I don't know if chris's sis is familiar with contour integrals)
I wouldn't mind teaching high school if it was a highly motivated environment because I might be okay with pedagogy, but not good at being a "teacher" in a general sense
@user130018 We reinforce it. Honestly, they should already know that from 6th grade.
@user130018 I don't have free reign over the classroom, so I have to deal with some of the ways my mentor teacher teaches. And she teaches a lot of "rules"
Well, I'm taking a phd level matrix analysis class right now, and my professor basically told me that if I wanted to get my PhD he would be my advisor because I "have potential in matrices." Basically my question is, what is the value of this kind of offer? Is it hard to find someone who will be your phd advisor with whom you think you can work well?
but it's more to do with the program, and the overall environment e.g. the physics -> academia pipeline has drastically narrowed in the last forty years
but that means you've got a lot of advisors who got their phds in greener circumstances, hence why i'm pretty skeptical now of any blithe advice from physics advisors :(
I complained about my classes to my advisor and he agrees with me and is gonna get me to take classes at another school (that count for math credits here)
@JasperLoy best thing to do is to take a bath (with cold water ?) and eat something .. then peacefully go to bed .. sleep will find you fast that way ! :-)
@Committingtoachallenge People often use Contour Integration and Residues. Integration by parts, Changing order of integration/summation. People often use different ways of writing functions: as integrals or as series. There is often a lifetime of experience that goes into knowing what to use, I can't honestly give you a compendium of topics to study that will turn you into a modern-day Ramanujan.
@Committingtoachallenge I don't know if she avoids it entirely. There are probably results that she uses whose proof is most commonly a contour integration.
@JasperLoy I remember in high school I thought calculus was only for gifted genius students and that I could never learn calculus in my life because my IQ wasn't 200 lol
