12:00 AM
@UserX Hard to say, might be worse.

I believe the best two candidates would be a set theorist and a number theorist

r9m
N being a fixed number large enough to admit the inequality in concern ..

@r9m Quadratic approximability suffices. But for somebody who doesn't know that rationals have terminating or periodic expansions in any base, I doubt that would be an adequate method.

A number theorist would easily get the ancient Greeks interested, a set theorist would have left A LOT of material to think of

i'm trying to think of what kind of mathematical result you could 'deposit' in that context which could actually be recognized as worthwhile, even if the tools to prove it would be far beyond what's available

r9m
12:03 AM
@DanielFischer I see .. so is it also true that the number is transcendental ?

@Semiclassical first-order logic

clarify?

You could introduce axioms, first order logic etc for set theory. For the rest you'd have to prove everything from scratch

@r9m Not sure. Probably.

eh, using what language. the barrier isn't just one of content but of formalism. algebra came far later

12:07 AM
@Semiclassical symbolic math too. Oh boy, you'd have A LOT to do

i think just introducing the idea of symbolic math would be enough
that concept in and of itself was a major achievement

@Semiclassical assuming you can't drop by and come back, it's not worth not introducing everything you know.
There will certainly be some later generation to appreciate everything.

@DanielFischer You are the next one to get 100k!

the way i'm trying to approach the question is to think of the situation with ramanujan

@JasperLoy Maybe, maybe not. Who cares?

12:09 AM
@Semiclassical I first read that as marijuana.

@DanielFischer I was imagining a_1 going AWAY from b_1, not TO a_1. I mean separating the C angle from the triangle and forming a rectangularized U

freudian slip?
his results and ideas seemed to come out of nowhere, but they were still expressed in the language of integrals, sums, series, etc.

@JasperLoy Go to sleep. The eyes work better when you're not overly tired.

Drugs here carry the death penalty.

12:10 AM
At least they don't execute gays.

so people could recognize what he was saying, even if the results seemed to come out of nowhere

Only if they spit chewing gum on the pavement.

LOL

i'm trying to think of similar kinds of results you could introduce to antiquity, and the language barrier presented by a lack of symbolic math is difficult to overcome
oh, thought of one
Gauss's construction of the heptadecagon

@DanielFischer I'm trying to understand how you got the time to be top-rep in both MSE, SO and visit chat so often. There are people who devote way less time than that in their jobs.

12:14 AM
It's a question of boredom-avoidance.

@Semiclassical the barrier would be even bigger, if we consider that the average mathematician can't speak ancient greek, and the average ancient greek couldn't write ancient greek

r9m
'margaric acid' (-heptadecanoic acid) .. close enough !

right

@daniel I am sorry to probe again, will you reveal your secret problem one day?

@JasperLoy Probably not.

r9m
12:16 AM
@JasperLoy 'secret problem' ? :O

@DanielFischer OK. If you are going to die, I want you to know that there is probably rebirth. So plan where you want to be reborn.

@UserX: hence why I like the heptadecagon as something to fling back into the past. they'd recognize it as a construction, but wouldn't have the tools to produce it themselves

I strongly believe that people should quit those "Godly"lines of thoughts in what concerns some figures of mathematics stories.Firstly because they are so old, no one can check whether it's true or not.Second, it's very specifical of every individual that built science,what they could do and how may never happen again.Hence, expect to work like them and if in anycase you may be outta that line doesn't mean you're uncapable.Create expectations over that will only drag us down to depression@Semi

what?

@Semiclassical there were people who argued over $\sqrt 2$ back then and they could construct that(not implying that it is trivial but still). I doubt they would accept a construction such that of the heptadecagon so easily

12:19 AM
true

@userx Is the girl in the picture your sister?

and admittedly i don't know exactly how difficult it would be to verify, using the tools that they'd have possessed, that the construction actually produced a 17-gon

@JasperLoy for the millionth time no

@JasperLoy It's the one that got away

@UserX OK, I was not reading every line. So it is just a friend?

12:22 AM
@Jasper yea, you interested?

@UserX No, I am currently interested in someone else.

@JasperLoy again?

@HipsterMathematician Well, it does not happen very often.

@Jasper Is it me <3?

@JasperLoy it happens several times

12:24 AM
@Committingtoachallenge How is your studying?
@HipsterMathematician It is only natural.

@JasperLoy okay

@HipsterMathematician Let me know when you get married, lol.

@JasperLoy It's alright, I am going into finals in $10$ days for optimization theory, Discrete math II & coding theory, Applied mathematical analysis and Statistical methods

@JasperLoy okay i tellya

and I finally finished the excercise set from hell in Cohn's classic

12:26 AM
@Committingtoachallenge From hell?

@JasperLoy It was just very hard to do with little to no exposure to the terms, but I feel MUCH stronger on the topic already

@Committingtoachallenge I don't think Cohn is in hell now.

r9m
has achillehui ever visited the chatroom ?

@Committingtoachallenge Good good. Don't forget me when you win the Fields medal.

@JasperLoy Cohn is in Heaven after writing these beautiful texts
@JasperLoy xD

12:27 AM
@JasperLoy a brazilian was laureate you saw?

@HipsterMathematician I did not see. I heard about the Iranian woman.

@JasperLoy yes

@HipsterMathematician Must be your student.

@robjohn What are the integration methods that are used by Chris's sis, Cleo, Tunk-fey called? Also, are there any good texts to read up about them?

@JasperLoy nah
Is @anon still alive?

12:30 AM
People ask questions whose answers are easily found in a book, very strange.

r9m
@JasperLoy then they probably have very little idea about where to look ..

@r9m Or they think they don't need to read any book.

By the way, tan(x) is a scalar, x↦tan(x) and tan are functions. As a student I thought being so meticulous was useless. I changed my mind when I started to teach...
Saw this in a comment
What does it mean?

That the tangent of a particular value is a number, but the function tan(x) over all values of x is actually a function?

@UserX Where?

12:35 AM
it pays to be meticulous with students who are just learning concepts

That's kinda obvious

Well it wasn't me who said it

Here comes Mimi.

@JasperLoy aww

@JasperLoy Do you know why sarah is not here?

12:38 AM
Anyway cya guys I gotta sleep

@Alizter I have not heard from her for a week. I don't know. Hope she is OK.

@JasperLoy She's gone to see about a girl.

@Alizter WTF!

Just finished GWH.
Hmmm. Maybe I am confused a bit here.

@Alizter That's my line actually, lol.

12:39 AM
Meht Dayyyymoooonn
oyf coyse iy cayn speayk liyke iym froym boyston

@Alizter Have you also watched A Beautiful Mind?

@JasperLoy I watched it a while ago. I need to find it or buy it.
I also bought bucket list and the boy in the stripped pyjamas to watch.

@Alizter I watched the latter.

I have read the book of the latter
haha
Contextual jinx

@Alizter When I told my friend I should act in A Beautiful Mind 2, he said it should be A Dirty Mind instead.

12:42 AM
@JasperLoy haha
@JasperLoy I remember crying when I read the book.
Why is there a mod?

@Alizter You must watch "If I Stay"!

@JasperLoy Did somebody flag my boston accent?

@Alizter Maybe someone did not like my dirty mind? LOL. I think it is just coincidence.

@JasperLoy Did they ever make a good film about Erdos?

@Alizter Not that I know of, but I read The man who loved only numbers.

12:45 AM
and amphetamines

@Alizter I have now not slept for 25 hours.

r9m
@Alizter lol ..

i'd forgotten how annouying the Meijer G-function was

@JasperLoy I have physics research to do tomorrow unfortunately so I can't do an all nighter.

@alitzer out of curiousity, what kind of research?

12:46 AM
@Semiclassical IKR. It is too generic. And personally the notation is silly.

@Semiclassical Research that involves searching again.

@Alizter: that, and computing limiting values is tedious

@Semiclassical Oh nothing interesting. I am looking at material properties of aluminium

ah. much math in that, or mostly just physics

@Semiclassical Hmm. Do you play with the contour or in terms of hyper goeometric?
@Semiclassical Aluminium 2024's use in aircraft. How exciting.

12:48 AM
mostly i'm playing with the fact that it shows up when WA solves an ODE and I want to make sure it doesn't actually satisfy a boundary condition :P
which really just means i want to know if it blows up at an argument of one

Fun fact. I have never solved a non-trivial differential equation. Ever.

@alizter What do ya think of my 12 holy books?

I really need to study diff equations.
@JasperLoy Personally I cannot say. I do not have experience with many texts.
I usually like the ones I have.

i probably should just turn on my laptop with mathematica on it and ask it to solve the ODE, since WA is a bit too dumb for it

I have trouble reading Spivak though. I usually just skip to the exercises.

12:49 AM
My problem with Spivak is that his multivariable is thinner than his single.

@Semiclassical If you use == you have WA in mathematica
@JasperLoy Oh but is that not his manifolds book?
I don't have that.

@Alizter Yes manifolds book.

I have his calculus text.
Which is written like an analysis text.
I also have an ancient copy of Finneys calculus

@Alizter I hope Sarah returns soon.
Otherwise, there is no one to post silly pics in chat.

Hardy's number theory is about the most interesting thing in my life at the moment. (and girls).

12:52 AM
Oh, who have you fallen in love with?

@JasperLoy I am too young to fall in love :P

@Alizter Nonsense. Falling in love is not love, lol. I liked a girl when I was 5.

Hi @JasperLoy

@user130018 Hi Bart.

@JasperLoy I only found out the real difference between boys and girls when I was 5.

12:55 AM
Hmm, my mum will wake up soon and make some breakfast. What do you want to eat?

Waffles

Pancakes

Ted has an unused Waffle maker

@Alizter That is very vague...

afternoon delight

12:57 AM
@Alizter Maybe she's gone to see about a boy.
@Alizter LOL

I need to text girls on my bus more. Firstly I need to sus out who studies mathematics
otherwise I won't have much to talk about

At least there's more girls in math than physics

r9m
@Alizter haha XD ... I know that feeling :P

My friend's QFT class has literally 0 girls
