11:05 AM
Hello @old I have changed to another shade of blue.

@JasperLoy Yes - I couldn't help but notice the bolder. brighter Jasper :)

user19161
@OldJohn Hehe, bluer might mean more depressed. =)

@JasperLoy It could - but I hope not in this case

user19161
By the way, the alpha channel of Firefox feels just as stable as the release channel.

What is that shade of blue called?

user19161
11:12 AM
I converted from "steelblue" to "blue".

user19161
This is the true full blue!

@JasperLoy That is because they release their versions so fast!!!

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I wanted to use release, but Iceweasel on Debian would not upgrade to release version because of dependency problems, so I chose Iceweasel Aurora instead.

@JasperLoy Good choice. There is another browser by the name of Aurora which is also pretty good.
Causes huge confusion though.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I wonder why they don't just use Alpha, silly.

11:17 AM

user19161
@skullpatrol Hahaha.

@JasperLoy marketing stuff, people are scared of the alpha/beta word. Same reason Microsoft never release Windows Beta, instead they use "Windows Preview".

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik But alpha goes with beta, so firefox should use something else with aurora such as brilliante.

@JasperLoy hahaha. Probably. I suspect, they directly jump form alpha to release, since there is no time for a feature freeze I suppose.

user19161
I wonder why people don't delete their own minus vote answers which are probably wrong and would give them more rep too.

11:20 AM
just like linux only has release candidates, (though they line up quite a lot)

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik No, there is a firefox beta, hence my point.

@JasperLoy Ohh. That beta.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Usually alpha, beta, rc, release with numbers behind if you count them all.

@JasperLoy okay.

user19161
Do you know that openSuse and Mageia got delayed by some months each in the last release?

11:22 AM
@JasperLoy Yep -I often delete some of my more stupid answers even before anyone gets to downvote them :)

@JasperLoy Naah, never paid much attention to OpenSUSE. Used them once, was turned off by the lack of apps.

user19161
Only Ubuntu and Fedora can stick up to their schedules most of the time.

user19161
@OldJohn I delete after a day if nobody upvotes it.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik The four I am familiar with now are Debian Ubuntu Fedora and CentOS. These are also the four most popular ones for servers it seems other than paid ones.

11:23 AM
@JasperLoy I don't go quite that far - I have one or two answers that I know are not wrong, but they have zero votes - I live in hope that someone might notice them one day

@JasperLoy Fedora? Servers? Since when?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik According to some stats I have seen.

Slackware always used to be my favourite for servers

@JasperLoy I delete only if there is a downvote. Zero votes are good for me, if the answer is not wrong.

user19161
It is not that unstable and you can keep it for a year, Fedora.

11:25 AM
@OldJohn Slackware was slackware. :-) Its the oldest still alive distro I think.
@JasperLoy I was a Fedorist before getting converted to Archer. I ran a server for myself using it, but it was toy college project. We would run servers for mock stock markets and stuff. Nothing intended to live longer than 8-9 months.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I think Debian is still the best distro. I think if Linux is to compete with Windows, it must be Debian commercialised. This is because of its stability, 2 year cycle and good package management and support for most architectures.

user19161
Hey @jay you seem to be one of those who read the transcript eh?

@JasperLoy yup.
@JasperLoy But that would drive away people who want their own applications. Unless there is a way to easily install most recent third-party application.
For example, Steam is now most probably coming to linux and it should be easy to install the most recent games using the package manager .

user19161
@skull Someone flagged your picture as spam. I dismissed it.

@JasperLoy Who is being so nice to us.

11:31 AM
Thanx

user19161
This time I am gonna say politely, it is alright to flag. It is your right, no hard feelings. =)

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Better remove that.

All this talk about flags - I have never come across them, and don't understand them - could anything I have done ever have been flagged without me knowing?

yep

user19161
And hey when I say things I mean it sincerely, so no hard feelings really means no hard feelings, not sarcasm.

11:33 AM
@JasperLoy how/where do you get to see flags that you can dismiss?

user19161
@OldJohn Probably many already!

user19161
@OldJohn If you have 10k in total SE rep you can see chat flags that are spam/offensive.

@JasperLoy ah - that makes sense

If truth had a color it would be blue :-D

user19161
@OldJohn If you have 10k on a single site you can see a list of flags for various things like bad answers.

11:34 AM
OK - so I might make it my aim to reach 10k on MSE :)

user19161
I mean, that picture there, skull is just having a conversation with us. He did not mean to advertise anything to a bunch of strangers for his benefit.

Okay, going for a walk, see you later.

user19161
@OldJohn Then you can see deleted posts!

@JasperLoy can't wait :/

Maybe it was a Chelsea hater...

11:36 AM
@JayeshBadwaik bye

user19161
Even if one advertises something in chat and he is a regular who is just sharing it is OK.

...who flagged it.

user19161
@skullpatrol That one was really extreme.

user19161
After thinking about what Caleb said I am also going to restrain myself more in chat.

user19161
No need to say sorry.

11:43 AM
http://i.stack.imgur.com/adiQ1.jpg

A peaceful blue.

user19161
I mean I wonder if the flagger even read our conversation about blue.

user19161
Or do they just open the transcript and flag every picture and every controversial word immediately?

user19161
And very often these are flagged quite quickly while the user is not in the room which means they actually refresh the transcript now and then while staying out of the room.

user19161
I wonder which users would do this sorta thing.

I should have formatted it :(

user19161
11:47 AM
@OldJohn I will reach 5k first and then see how.

@JasperLoy 5k is also my immediate aim

user19161
@OldJohn It is now the start of Nov and I have about 4.4k so I need about 10 points each day for the rest of the year only, not too difficult I guess.

@JasperLoy I am sure that is well within your capabilities :)

user19161
Hey @wj32!

hmm, that's very blue
3

11:53 AM
going out for lunch - back later

user19161
@wj32 So do you like my answer about the V and inverted V? If so, you may upvote it! Hint hint...

yes, that more than fulfills your 10 point per day goal

the bitch is back

done

user19161
@NickKidman No name calling in this chat.

user19161
11:55 AM
There are many flaggers here.

user19161
Better not call yourself either.

@JasperLoy: you changes your gravatar too often.

can someone give me recommendations for a good complex analysis book? I've already gone through one, but I don't feel like I understand anything beyond a basic definitional level

user19161
@wj32 Which did you read?

complex analysis seems so vague compared to real analysis
Lang

11:56 AM
I should not even call myself?

yes, i know you are laughing

I'm not afraid of Curry's paradox

I will be able to change my display name tomorrow.

user19161
@wj32 Why should I laugh?

(get it?, "calling myself")

user19161
11:57 AM
@NickKidman OMG!

@JasperLoy: May I use your display name from tomorrow?

nothing

@JasperLoy: So we will have the same display name :-)

anyway, what would you recommend?

@ガベージコレクタ What's wrong with the one you have now?

11:58 AM
Also, the bitch is back is not an insult, it's a reference to the finale of Veronica Mars, which is a reference to the Elton John song

user19161
@wj32 I recommend the following: Rao's Invitations to Complex Analysis, Gamelin's Complex Analysis, Freitag's Complex Analysis 1 and 2, Conway's Functions of a Complex Vatriable 1 and 2, Ahlfors's Complex Analysis, Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis.

@skullpatrol: Just 4 fun.

"The Bitch Is Back" is a rock song by Elton John, written with Bernie Taupin. It was the second single released from his 1974 album Caribou, and reached number 1 in Canada (his sixth in that country), number 4 in the United States and number 15 in the United Kingdom. The song has been identified as one of Elton John's best hard rock cuts. In the U.S., it was certified Gold on 13 September 1995 by the RIAA. The song was twice recorded by Tina Turner: once for her Rough album in 1978, and again for the John/Taupin tribute album Two Rooms in 1991. Turner also performed the song in her liv...

@JasperLoy does that ordering mean anything?

user19161
@wj32 Nothing. Take your pick.

12:00 PM
alright, let me ask this: which one did you use?
if any

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ A user is free to use any name he wants so I cannot stop you. But I really do not wish you to use my name, so I will be extremely upset if you do that.

When people speak of ordering and meaning, I think of semantic lattices

@JasperLoy :-)

Sounds like a reasonable association.

user19161
@wj32 I just mostly used lecture notes but I browsed through all these. And I am going to study Rudin's book in future but that is because of other factors.

12:01 PM
Lets take a break and watch the following

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I am quite upset that you even mention these things, so don't smile.

@JasperLoy: I do have Real and Complex Analysis on my todo list
is that book actually good for complex analysis?

@JasperLoy OK. :-(

user19161
@wj32 It omits some things but so do the others, no book is "perfect". And it is used but not as often as say Ahlfors's because it is perhaps a little too novel.

@ガベージコレクタ @

12:04 PM
There are two turk gals with big boobs, fist bumping in front of me. Also, can there be a bijection between a group G of uncountable cardinality (e.g. SU(2)) and the Symmetric group Sym(G)? I noticed that maybe the trivial group and Z_2 might be the only groups with Sym(G)=G.

@JasperLoy I like the sound of that. thanks for the advice!

user19161
@wj32 Just my opinion, I am only a banana.

The video link given above is so funny. If you can insist on not laughing, you are the winner!

@JasperLoy your admirer is very young.

12:22 PM
@skullpatrol Hi

@ガベージコレクタ hi
@ガベージコレクタ wassup?

I bought some new pants, gave them to they taylor, lost the check and now he wont give me my pants back

@skullpatrol Nothing happens. Just a greeting :-)

@NickKidman Did you give them to the tailor to be fitted to you ie hemmed?

to be shortened yes
clothes that fit are sexy
i.e. I only wear injective pants

12:29 PM
So they only fit you, right?

not necessarily
the best pants are ...wait for it... epic

That was not worth the wait :)

This is :-D
41 mins ago, by Nick Kidman
the bitch is back
@NickKidman His hair is almost the same color as your avatar ;-)

Elton Johns first attempts to come out
I love Nikita and Rocket Man
Tiny Dancer is also classy
since I saw them singing it in Almost Famous

hello

@jdoe: Hello

@jdoe: What's your favorite Elton John song, or alternatively, your favorite topos?

Rocketman is my favorite Elton John song

12:53 PM
Now that is a typo

I don't know any topoi

user19161
@skullpatrol What is written in the profile might not be true. If it is true, then I should be more worried.

@JasperLoy Don't worry, be happy.

user19161
@skullpatrol Where did that line come from anyway?

@JasperLoy A song.

12:57 PM
The essay topic I wanted to do is not available anymore :(

Math essay?

user19161
Probably, some places ask you to write essay for credit.

user19161
They are really expositions of some specific topic.

user19161
So it's like writing a really short book.

@jdoe: If you don't know any topoi, then most likely, you don't know any non-topoi cats :D

1:00 PM
hehe

user19161
The joy of cats and the joy of sets.

> In mathematics, a topos (plural "topoi" or "toposes") is a type of category that behaves like the category of sheaves of sets on a site.
well that's me lost
I just like simple things like functors and natural transforms

@JasperLoy Hmm...

@ガベージコレクタ How old are you?

user19161
@skullpatrol He/she won't tell you.

1:03 PM
@skullpatrol between 10 to 40 years old. :-)

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ We use "between X and Y" and "from X to Y". Your preposition is wrong.

@JasperLoy OK honey :-)

@ガベージコレクタ Where do you live?

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I am not your honey.

@JasperLoy You are my bee?

user19161
1:05 PM
@ガベージコレクタ No, I don't belong to you at all in any way.

@skullpatrol It is too far from US.

@ガベージコレクタ Have you ever been stung by a bee?

@skullpatrol not yet.
@JasperLoy Oh my ghost!

@ガベージコレクタ What is your age?

user19161
@jayesh I made an interesting observation. Almost each time after a firefox upgrade, my settings aure usually preserved but the smooth scrolling option always get checked so that I have to uncheck it again.

1:08 PM
@skullpatrol Please don't ask confidential data. :-)

user19161
@skullpatrol He might be a 50 year old man in disguise.

@ガベージコレクタ You know there is an age limit to be in here.

@JasperLoy It is too old honey!
@skullpatrol I will be jailed sooon....

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Please stop calling me honey, or I will ignore you.

@JasperLoy Oh my ghost!
Lets talk about mathematics

1:11 PM
@ガベージコレクタ They can track you down through your IP address.

@skullpatrol You can use proxies to hide your identity. There are many proxies around the globe.

user19161
@skullpatrol They will only do that if you are a terrorist, I believe there are none here. =)

@ガベージコレクタ Have you visited Hacker.SE

@JasperLoy That is correct. I don't terror anybody here. I am a good human being.
@skullpatrol Not yet.

the other essay topics aren't as good :(

user19161
1:14 PM
@skullpatrol I believe it is 13?

@ガベージコレクタ, did you study any proof of pi irrational?

@jdoe Not yet.

@JasperLoy Sad.
@skullpatrol In other countries atleast, IP address can only be obtained in a criminal case. (I am not sure about US thought.)

@ガベージコレクタ Act like a good human being and stop following Jasper around like a lost puppy.

@skullpatrol Most of the times, even if you get IP address, it is difficult to determine which connnection is actually using it, due to the DHCP nature of address assignment.

1:16 PM
3 mins ago, by ガベージコレクタ
@JasperLoy That is correct. I don't terror anybody here. I am a good human being.

@jdoe: the topos is like a theory of sets, topologies and bundles, but it avoids $\in$. Hence, if you always deal with "normal mathematical objects" you live in Set, the category of sets. And then topoi is just a language for things you already know. That's why I said if you don't know it, then you really just don't know anything that's not a topos or fits inside one. Counterexamples would rather be things which lack certain structe which is usually taken for granted
(sets and being able to single out their elements and subsets).

@JayeshBadwaik I know all that, I'm trying to make a point here.

@skullpatrol Hmmm.... :-)

@JasperLoy That is correct. I don't terror anybody here. I am a good human being.

@NickKidman, I see!

@ガベージコレクタ Do you want to act like a lost puppy?

@skullpatrol Yes. It is fun!

@ガベージコレクタ Or a good human being.

@skullpatrol This is a funny question. I will be a good lost human being.

1:21 PM
@ガベージコレクタ How about a terrorist?

@skullpatrol: Lets talk about mathematics.
@skullpatrol Oh my ghost.

@ガベージコレクタ Something really easy?

@JohanLarsson: High school level is enough

@ガベージコレクタ meh

@JohanLarsson: Or International mathematics olympiad level.

1:23 PM
@ガベージコレクタ What math are you studyng in school right now?

@Charlie Charlie!!!!

@skullpatrol: I have learnt all.

@ガベージコレクタ Algebra?

@JayeshBadwaik jayesh!!!!!! are you better?

@Charlie Yes. Much better.

1:24 PM
@ガベージコレクタ Calculus?

@jdoe: One of the necessary features of a category to be a topos is to be cartesian closed. As far as I understand it, this is related to being able to evaluate functions of more arguments. I.e. if you have something like f(x,y) then you're able to choose x=c and define a new function g(z):=f(c,z).
In category theory, a category is cartesian closed if, roughly speaking, any morphism defined on a product of two objects can be naturally identified with a morphism defined on one of the factors. These categories are particularly important in mathematical logic and the theory of programming, in that their internal language is the simply typed lambda calculus. They are generalized by closed monoidal categories, whose internal language, linear type systems, are suitable for both quantum and classical computation. Definition The category C is called Cartesian closed if and only if it satis...

@skullpatrol: Find the range of function without using calculus.

@JayeshBadwaik good!i'm glad!

@ガベージコレクタ Have done any trigonometry?

@skullpatrol: For example, given a function f() in polynomial fraction of order m and n respectively, find its range without using calculus.
@skullpatrol: Yes. I have learnt all trigonometries.

1:26 PM
@Charlie :-) How was your day?

@JasperLoy hi, jas! your blue hurts my eyes
@JayeshBadwaik good, good!

@ガベージコレクタ How about geomerty?

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ So quiz: can you tell me the difference between cos x / sin x and 1 / tan x ?

he is trying to potray the song
"blue da ba dee da ba dye, da ba dee da ba"
Right @JasperLoy?

@skullpatrol I have a problem with 3D geometry.

1:27 PM
@Charlie Nice. :-)

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Never heard.

@ガベージコレクタ What is the problem?

@ガベージコレクタ Interesting

@JayeshBadwaik :D

@JasperLoy Here

1:29 PM
@JasperLoy cos is defined as the ratio of adjacent side over hypothenus, bla bla bla... to easy quiz and make me bored. :D

@ガベージコレクタ So what is the answer?

@skullpatrol Without using vector, can you find the intersection point between a line and a plane whenever the line and the plane are complicatedly defined. :-)

@JayeshBadwaik where did you take this song from?

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ You have clearly not understood the depth of my question. If I define a function as cos x / sin x and 1/ tan x, there is a difference.

@Charlie I had it in one of the music CD's I told you about. The one which had Sandra and all.

1:31 PM
@JayeshBadwaik hmmm
@JayeshBadwaik funny song

@ガベージコレクタ Do you want a hint?

@JasperLoy OK. I will think of it

@Charlie yeah.

@skullpatrol Which question are you talking about?

2 mins ago, by Jasper Loy
@ガベージコレクタ You have clearly not understood the depth of my question. If I define a function as cos x / sin x and 1/ tan x, there is a difference.
@ガベージコレクタ This^one.

1:34 PM
@skullpatrol Wait, it should be related to limit.

Going for dinner, will be back later.

@ガベージコレクタ No Calculus.

@JayeshBadwaik see you!!!

@skullpatrol I am thinking as if I am a lost puppy now...

@ガベージコレクタ Try thinking like a good human being :-D
@ガベージコレクタ If I define a function as cos x / sin x and 1/ tan x, there is a difference.

1:37 PM
two functions^^

do you guys know the song "Tell me why I don't like mondays"?

@skullpatrol The question is what is the difference?

@NickKidman no...

@ガベージコレクタ of course
@NickKidman yes

@skullpatrol The difference equals to zero?

1:39 PM
my flatmate doesn't know the song. she also doesn't know what CERN is
I don't know how that's possible
she's american though, so I have low standards for her
(racism, yeah)

@NickKidman Culture gap?

@JasperLoy The difference equals to zero?

@NickKidman don't know the song, it's OK, but CERN....that's a crime

user19161
@NickKidman Next thing you know, someone flags that.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ There is a difference.

1:40 PM
@NickKidman you're not american???

@JasperLoy And the difference equals to zero right?

@JasperLoy: these americans, putting their flags everywhere

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ No, do you know what a function is?

@NickKidman hahaha

user19161
@NickKidman HAHAHA. I was actually the fist man on the moon, don't tell them.

1:41 PM
@NickKidman One small step for Man...

@JasperLoy yes. a function map every element of domain to exactly one element of codomain.

@JasperLoy but you put a banana

user19161
@Charlie HAHAHAHA

@JasperLoy :D

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ So go and think about it and then tell me when you spot any difference between the two functions.

1:43 PM
@JasperLoy I spot the difference equals to zero everywhere. :-)

@ガベージコレクタ every element
2 mins ago, by ガベージコレクタ
@JasperLoy yes. a function map every element of domain to exactly one element of codomain.

@Charlie: I live in central europe.

@NickKidman hmmm

user19161
I live in the Wheel of Samsara.

I live in singapore with my hero.

1:46 PM
@ガベージコレクタ cosx/sinx <---> 1/tanx

@Charlie: I love it when educated americans point out that others mispronounce Gauss, but are oblivious to the fact that how they say Einstein is absolutely wrong.

user19161
@NickKidman I have learnt that whenever someone says he knows how to pronounce a foreign name for sure, never trust that.

@skullpatrol OK. I will give the final answer. The difference equals to zero! Period!

My real name is 'emptystring'

@NickKidman i had a lecture with a german prof..i realized he was german because the way he pronounced Einstein.really cute

1:48 PM
@ガベージコレクタ Not correct.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I will give you a hint. Think about the largest domain you can define each of them on as subsets of the real line.

@NickKidman In C# you can use the constant string.empty.

For cos x and sin x, their domains are any real numbers, but when we define a function f as cos x / sin x, then its domain excludes the multiple of pi.

Ok so far.

1:53 PM
1/ tan x has a domain in real number except for the multiple of pi as well. Thus what is the difference?

That is the question...

For me, the difference between those functions equal to zero.

Then you are mistaken.

@skullpatrol wait

Waiting...
tic tock

1:56 PM
loading....

@skullpatrol: 1/tan x has domain of real numbers excluding a multiple of pi and multiple of pi/2. :-)

@anon hello!

hey

@anon wassup?

anything that is a multiple of pi is also a multiple of pi/2...
waking up still

1:58 PM
@skullpatrol: So they are different!

user19161
@anon You need more sleep.

@ガベージコレクタ Yes, very good job.

@skullpatrol; 1/tan x has domain of real numbers excluding a multiple of pi and odd multiple of pi/2. :-)

@anon wake up is the hardest part...

@skullpatrol I should get a hug from my hero!
