Kalina, who are you with?
If it's VM, just go on the forums and they'll fix it up from there.
Far better than calling them.
However now I read you said PPPoE, so I doubt it is then
BT infinity
A while ago my DSL connection went from around 10 MBit to 1 Mbit. I talked with tech support a dozen times over weeks, and in the end they just said that 1Mbit is the maximum my connection can do. Totally useless. I directly switched to 32Mbit cable afterwards
yeah my phone line can "only do" 6mbit
which is why I get 62mbit atm
Oh lordy BT? ick.
had more problems with virgin media than BT during my lifetime
11:10
I haven't. Once we got the line sorted ;)
fair enough
Which involved an engineer who actually looked at what I had, went "wwoah, you built your own router?" and then explained exactly wtf had happened to the line
Also they gave me discounts when I phoned up and went "I'm paying too much"
Tranquillity is online
oh look I got a message
@ianpugsley congratulations on another 366 days defying death
oh right, you say happy birthday to everybody else
2012 was leap?
11:17
but when its my birthday...
no its fine, I get it...
1 min ago, by badp
oh look I got a message
No it's fine. Don't worry about my fragile feelings. Concern yourself with your own existence...
I suggest to trigger an email in my general direction next... february, perhaps on the right day :P
11:18
When I finally quit and have my account deleted
When I'm asked why I'm leaving, I will say because badp didn't wish me happy birthday until promted
and I hope you realise, on that day... not a single fuck will be given by anybody
besides, do you really want to be congratulated for something 98,983% of people manage to do? ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html
I don't care about that other 99% of people
they're not me
but I thought you were hardcore
0
Q: When upgrade an item in WoW, does the use and proc upgrade as well?

AndreasI am considering upgrading the Darkmoon fair trinket, but I see that the UI shows only the stats will be upgraded, will the use or proc be upgraded as well?

I redefine the meaning of hardcore
11:23
What happens to 24 yr old males causing it to go back down slightly?
@kalina call me when you're the 1%, then. in 2095. if I'm still alive. or don't. I mean, the chances of me being still alive by then are... not looking good
0.31 per mille
@badp why would I do that? You couldn't even wish me happy birthday without being prompted, who says I'm going to remember who you are tomorrow let alone in 100 years
Aha! So you don't care!
Oh and Happy Birthday Kalina :D
late birthday wishes aren't birthday wishes
11:25
@djsmiley2k sssh it was a week ago. or so
It is when I didn't know you then.
Mine was the 31st Jan.
I would remember that, but since nobody in here cares that I ceased being a teenager I see it as wasted memory capacity
I guess it's better late than never, then; grats on another 366 days lived without fatal accidents.
@kalina Half of us have ceased being a teenager recently and we all know how it feels like - or, more accurately, how it doesn't feel like: different. :P
@badp sorry but you barely classify as human, so you have no idea how it feels
hmpfs
@badp ... for "recently" being "somewhere in the last century", in my case. :D
11:28
@kalina Human is too mainstream. Mod abuse is where it's at
@badp Are you a hipster now?
@fredley Hipster is too human.
@badp Are you a robot?
@fredley Robots are too Origami.
Though seriously? Turning 20 is not a big deal. Stuff where the work required was ever so slightly more than "stay alive" to achieve is where the real important milestones are.
11:29
let us rain some doom down upon the filthy heads of our doomed enemies
@kalina ...that would be ourselves, I suppose! YAY DOOM.
I'm going to sing the doom song now... doom doom do do doom do do do dooooom
@MartinSojka Honestly I'm fairly certain the "98.9%" thing is probably purely statistical and completely bogus
Good enough to annoy @kalina with but not much more
Well, I don't mind wishing "happy birthday" to people, of course. It's a cute little memento mori.
So ... belated happy birthday to everyone here who had one since I first logged in here (520 days ago) and who I didn't wish one yet!
Do you know how much ore I have mined this weekend?
SO MUCH ORE
11:39
@MartinSojka Me neither, but I don't honestly make it a point to commit all the birthday dates to memory
@kalina Do you know how many Terrain Republic mindless drones and New Conglomerate corporate dogs I have shot in the face this week-end? :)
I don't think you understand what I mean by "so much ore"
@badp That's why I have my genealogical software fed with them. But that's just for the family, of course. :)
you may think that I have gathered a quantity of ore that would have allowed for me to perform important functions like getting some sleep or eating
So how's the Excel vs Excel/Console shooter integration thingadongdong going?
11:41
but in fact, you are mistaken
I have gathered just under 1 billion isk worth of unprocessed ore
in 2 days, by myself
which is sufficient to pay for 2 EVE accounts
Happy processing ♫
processing is instant
@kalina My K/D ratio is 0.46. I have a lousy aim. My main method of killing people is setting up high explosives where they don't expect them, then blow them up to kingdom come, giggling maniacally.
@kalina really? disappointing.
Still, there was some fighting, so it was like 2 or 3 people out of 100+ kills, I guess. :)
11:42
@MartinSojka Do you use your fakest scottish accent to go with it?
@badp I know, but it's so satisfying
because you click a button, and increase the value of all of your hard work by 15-20%
"ooohh, ther' goin' to haf to glue youuu back together. IN HELLL!"
@kalina If it were that simple, I don't think the increase in value is going to be that great
unfortunately, because I can't use any big freighters yet
You know, economics
11:43
I have the laborious process of moving 2 million m3 of ore to do first
@YiJiang'sEvilClone refining ability is based on an entire subset of skills
@badp My faction (Vanu Sovereignty) is wearing purple spandex suits to war. We're fabulous, but so very un-Scottish ...
I have them all levelled up to 4 and 5
which provides a decent decrease in waste
I had a short term girlfriend who wore purple spandex.
11:44
@MartinSojka Who isn't wearing spandex suits to space war anyway?!
@kalina This in... eve?
Just don a skirt on top and you're good to go.
It will be 17 days until I can use a freighter, that would move all of this ore in 4 trips
It will take me about 17 days to move it all in the ships I have currently
but since the corporate hangars at my pos are full, I have to move it before I can mine more
@djsmiley2k yes
@kalina If it is high-sec, just contract it out
@kalina gaaaah making me wanna play, but linux.... and £££
11:46
@MadScientist can you do contracts from a corporate hangar at a pos?
@kalina ...so you won't be able to use that ore to pay for your next month
@badp I wasn't going to anyway
I was going to build stuff out of it to increase my profit margin further
and to that end, I have blueprints for 6 ships finishing material research in 16 days
oh, okay. Are you paying earth dollars for it or do you have it covered already?
@kalina That probably won't work. But for general transport inside high-sec it is surprisingly cheap to let other people move the stuff
which is CONVENIENT considering I won't be able to move the ore there
@MadScientist we set up a pos in a system with good ore spawns in it, put a couple of corp hangars there and used it as a drop off point while mining
since we don't have an orca yet
11:47
ok now I'm lost... :D
it sped up the process significantly since we didn't have to dock or switch systems during mining
but now I have two corporate hangars full of ore
@kalina ram it all the way to the market
@badp that won't work.
I have to move it all around in little cargo ships
speaking of which
how does void in Eve work? Do you only use thrusters when accelerating and decelerating, or is it basically "underwater space" with drag?
@MadScientist I will have a providence in ~a month anyway
@badp underwater with drag
11:50
:O
okay, so I guess that would take a while to do
If you stop engines, you stop moving
this and many other obvious inaccuracies bought to you by EVE
nah, I played a space combat game that had the same "underwater" technique
so I guess ramming a slow big ship from behind with a smaller faster ship isn't very effective in cutting down on travel time
space working properly is what was so good about combat in Freelancer
cutting your engines to keep moving forward while turning the ship around to shoot at what was behind you was good
uh, I'm fairly certain freelancer also had drag, although you could course lock
11:52
@badp Traveling is mostly in warp and jumping, there is no way to speed that up like this
no, Freelancer would allow you to keep moving pretty much indefinitely if you cut the engines
You can ram other ships, and this is important to bump them away from a gate or a station
or disable their cloak
I don't think there's a space game with no upper velocity limits (as it should be in reality)
I dunno; ramming worked in Allegiance. It would shave only a few percentage points off travel time, but it could make all the difference
bbl lunch
11:54
mmm lunch
@kalina I'd think it would be a good way to get shot, since your movement becomes predictable. Very easy to compensate for a targeting computer.
In a space fight, you want to tumble around like a drunken sailor at least. :)
@MartinSojka Freelancer isn't like EVE, the targeting is done by the player in Freelancer and normally getting opened up on with everything is a sign that you need to run rather than sit there shooting back
the person behind you thinks they have the advantage of having all of their guns pointed at you
In reality, space battles don't exist ;)
At least it's not EVE's "orbit until somebody runs out of numbers" combat
12:11
You see that "100%"? That is thrust
IIRC
note at any rate how the engines look "on" as you move in a straight line
but when you turn you don't get any particular effect from the necessary side thrusters
No space game can confirm to real life physics. The 'no max velocity' rule is enough to make sure of that.
The "no max velocity" rule is funny for the one accelerating - because the results seem to contradict it. If you put in 10 times the acceleration into your ship, you get to your destination 10 times faster, always. If you're at 1/5th the speed of light and it will take you roughly 10 years to reach your destination (which is about 2 light years away) and you could instead put 10 times as much acceleration (=energy) into your drive, you'd arrive at it in a tenth of the time - in one year.
Of course ... it would only be one year for you. For people outside, it would be closer to 5 years.
Honestly, you aren't going to accelerate and ram your way into appreciable fractions of c
Not very fast at least, but does it matter? For someone, somewhere, we're already moving at a significant fraction of c.
BTW, how long would these "charity marathon" runs be? I'm thinking of proposing a real marathon for Minecraft (42195m), which would take about two hours if people know what they are doing and are allowed boats; three to four if it's mostly traversable terrain, or some hills and they get pig riding equipment at the start.
:D
Awesome idea Martin.
12:26
I simply don't know if it would be too long or too short.
@MartinSojka I suppose that if you stay below c/100 at all times, you can simply ignore relativistic effects for all practical purposes
or c/1000
Make sure you throw in some bullshit teletransportation stuff for all plot requirements, throwing all science off the windscreen anyway
Wormholes! Everybody loves penetrating random gaping holes, right?
@MartinSojka Allegiance did have these. They're called 'alephs' and camping them is totally legit.
The offensive team who needs to push through an aleph camp can simply suck it, use a different aleph, use a distraction or pay for an aleph resonator that gives ample warning before exploding all the things too close (both sides).
lol bungie. "We've created something new and unique. Here is some pictures to prove it". Picture of guy with a gun.
¬_¬
12:42
At this point, a picture of a guy holding a bouquet is more unique than a picture of a guy holding a gun, as far as computer games are involved. Which for sure says something about a good part of the gaming culture ...
@MartinSojka eh. Interpersonal relationships in a game in this day and age is just... asking for trouble
He could be hiding a gun in there!
@badp This would be another example of one of those times I think the community is too hard on an asker, and one of hundreds of examples of why closing has a negative connotation. Even the closing of the question itself doesn't seem that big a deal to me... but 8 downvotes? I mean, he's a < 1k user...

Q: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Crashing

KecoeyI own Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic on Steam. Every time that I launch the game it crashes and I can't play it. No error message appears. I have an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop, with an i7 3rd generation processor, 8GB of RAM, a Nvidia GeForce GT 630M graphics card, and it is running Windows 6...

I downvotes for the attitude in the comments fwiw.
12:53
@LessPop_MoreFizz Well, some of the comments have been deleted, so I can't see them all - but still. We should vote the question, not the user. He just has a frustrating problem, and he was trying to ask a community he thought could help. Unfortunately, he didn't understand our rules for asking.
If you want to send the message "You asked this question incorrectly, and we do not like you - leave and don't come back" I think 8 downvotes is a pretty good start.
@ebongo given that you can't see the initial backlash, I'll simply say: fair enough, but I also think the question is not very good, and, going back to "downvote the question not the user", well, it shouldn't matter that he has only 450 rep.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I mention his rep, just on an understanding of the rules basis. A bad question should still be closed, but I'd give him a little more time to address it (he has already edited it once, it looks like). I'm on a campaign to be less negative... until I get tired of it.
For the record, there are 18 deleted comments on that post
(!)
I also encourage you to look at the original version of the post and not tell me "this question does not show any research effort; it is unclear or not useful"
13:08
@djsmiley2k Also, games need more tits on their covers.
I like tits. Nice funny birdies.
@MartinSojka Here, have some boobie

I swear chat somehow got stupider without @GnomeSlice around.
@fredley None of us is as stupid as all of us
See: IQ of a mob
A wild @YiJiang'sEvilClone appears. It's shiny!
13:22
@StrixVaria Needs more sparkle
Like I said @badp - I can see how the close was inevitable without edits. I just think we should have given the guy a little slack. Did someone delete the question now?
@EBongo Yes. I have. Closed questions without a hope of salvageability from the community should be deleted. The asker is welcome to try again, next time with more details. I think this might also refund him the reputation he lost, but I wouldn't swear on it.
At the end of the day, we're not here to help the asker, we're here to help the internet at large. The two things sometimes don't overlap.
@badp Agree to disagree. From my perspective, the asker is the internet at large. The internet itself can't ask questions. If it could, we'd probably frown on that as question seeding... :)
@EBongo The "internet at large" already has a resource for "help my game crashes" - help.ea.com/article/why-is-dead-space-3-on-pc-crashing
"help my game crashes when I do this/while doing this/when opening this handle" is something we're more likely to be able to help with
13:32
Just as preventing information rot, and applying policies across all questions are a useful service to Arqade - I think recruiting new high quality users, and helping askers turn bad questions into good ones are equally if not more important.
True - that's why it's critical to make new users acquainted to our way to do things from the very start
I don't disagree with that - I just propose that it be done in a more positive way.
being dishonest about our rules isn't positive

Q: Red dead redemption cochinay assault soundtrack

AubergineGuys literally sniffed out youtube, but it only gives me Cochinay theme song. What I want is that epic music when you fight your way through to Cochinay during Dutchman final mission(where you eventually kill him). Starts here at 7:36 : ...

Who said anything about dishonesty? I'm all I'm asking for is a little time (I'd propose 24 hours for a case like this), some constructive comments, and only the downvotes needed to close the question if he doesn't clean it up. The outcome may end up the same, but instead of a user quitting - they instead understand why the rule exists, and why the question wasn't a good fit for the site.
When I was a new user, I asked some bad questions. I didn't learn why they were bad by having them closed. I learned by having folks explain it to me in comments, on Meta, and here.
13:43
@djsmiley2k It's a bounty. You can give them out if you think some answer is so good you want to reward someone - or you can put them on a question which you think didn't get enough attention, need a better or updated answer and so on. They come from the reputation points of the one giving the bounty.
@djsmiley2k You can see all active bounties at any time here: gaming.stackexchange.com/?tab=featured
If you hover with your mouse pointer over the red "+150" string, you can see who awarded this bounty.

Q: Should I finish FFXIII before beginning FFXIII-2?

TZHXI got Final Fantasy XIII when it came out, and played up to the beginning of Chapter 8 before real life pulled me away. Being the impulsive spendaholic that I am, I have now purchased Final Fantasy XIII-2. My question is, should I go back to and finish the original before beginning on the sequel...

sigh, 4 answers all missed a vital point. The game happily tells you what happened in FFXIII
I've added the extra infomation, but who is gonna read through 4 answers to get to mine ¬_¬
I hate those types of questions so much.
13:58
lol
Have I depressed you by asking annoying questions?
@EBongo I could see this for answerers but there's no shortage for askers on the internet
@badp I'd wager the vast majority of good answerers on this site, started by asking a question - possibly in many cases a bad one. Surely there are a lot of bad askers out there - I just propose it is hard to tell them apart until we cultivate them a little bit. If we could transform closing and question editing into a process which alienated less users I think everyone would win.
14:38
As a sidenote, this user has asked another technical question before, and he seems to abandon them the instant they get closed.
His Pokemon Online question seems to be really localized, as no one can reproduce it, but he's continuing to engage and attempt to resolve the issue, so that's good.

Q: How significant is the difference between difficulty levels?

Ben BrockaI usually play Dead Space on the hardest difficulty setting (except the "limited saves" mode), but it's been a while so I started up Dead Space 3 on the second hardest mode. While I die quickly, it's not all that hard. So what all is the difference between the difficulty modes? How significant i...

Just start at the end and travel backwards
@BenBrocka Do I even want to know where that came from?
That looks like it's done in pencil, which makes it almost 100x more impressive that it's not smudged.
Presumably not consecutively
@StrixVaria Sounds like it's pen
14:52
The GOG downloader thinks that my download of The Witcher 2 is at 14.99GB / 14.99GB, though it has been like that for several minutes now (and still downloading). Windows explorer says there's only 14.2GB of files in the download folder
@BenBrocka Looks like seven years of his spare time.
And after he finished, he just rolled it up and put it away.
@chrisF althought editing the question IS apparently the go-to-solution, it isnt in the way you seem to feel, or that the other commenter seemed to imply. See, they still want you to answer the question, not edit an answer into your question, which is contrary to where the comments were going
All of our top users started with answers. There are exceptions too, such as yours truly.
I started with answers on UX since it seemed easier to jump into an answer vs a question
@BenBrocka That's because it is
14:58
Yeah, most of UX's top rep users started with As, maybe 1/5th with Qs
Actually, if post type #4 is a suggested edit, then agent and kalina started with that of all things
Yeah, the problem set for an answer is much more defined. And, knowing the system deeper, there's many more pitfalls for a question than an answer
In my case, an answer to a question which the asker seemingly abandoned and which would likely be closed as not being too constructive or a good question nowadays. :D Ah well, you've got to start somewhere.
Wow! I remember that answer, was that really my first?
