Do I play the latest update to KSP, or watch YouTube all night. Or do I do what I said I would, and read a boring requirements doc that I was supposed to have read by end of the day, yesterday?

Apparently it is snowing here.

@OrigamiRobot weird, it's raining here

@fbueckert I have officially read the prologue of Mistbown

@AshleyNunn will probably enjoy that.

@MBraedley Used, but yeah

@agent86 Is that @Sterno?

@badp Is that a shift code?
Also, installing runway lights in KSP didn't go exactly as planned. 150 + parts at the threshold of a runway tends to lag incoming planes, causing them to crash.

@MBraedley Ha.

@RavenDreamer You're alive!

@OrigamiRobot You should know this if you checked battle.net.
I'd have been on your friends list. PLaying Starcraft 2.

Psh, I don't check my friends list on anything.

UllallullooIt has been brought to my attention that the buttons to change tabs no longer fade. My favorite feature in Diablo 3 is how it doesn't pre-load textures so you get lag for the first few minutes every playsession.

@OrigamiRobot How is it? I've never read that.

@fbueckert So is Lord Virtue the same as the Lord Ruler?

@StrixVaria Yes, I bought the trilogy on Friday.

I might actually play a bit after my midterms. I stumbled across a couple decks I wanted to make back in the day, but never ended up making. Could be fun to whip them up on Lackey and give them a whirl.

@Wipqozn Ok, that was pretty epic.

It's so amazing when you first notice that extra probe he has.

I didn't even notice it on the minimap.
I just saw his last probe die, and I just said, "Oh, that's it. Game over. Why does this video still have five minutes left?"
And then I saw the exploration probe, and it's, "THAT'S why there's five minutes left!"

The first time I seen that video I think I fell out of my chair laughing. It was awesome.
So I just showed this video to a friend... turns out he went to school with one of the castors. Small world.
It's funny, because the only reason I shared it with him is one of the castors reminded me of him.
oky, well
time for bed

@badp I feel like I missed something in the whole Culture's Meta discussion yesterday. I think it's clear you and I don't agree about closing the question, but I don't see why that would be a big deal - it's Meta. I don't understand why folks took offense to my comments. Would you want to discuss?

10:00 AM
@EBongo Hi. I found issue with the comments about the "various hobbies we have on the site" and the "level of productivity" they have
Closing as an important for the maintenance of the site as editing, deleting, protecting or anything else
Closing isn't meant to be a slap in the face, as I clumsily attempted to explain on the question yesterday
Until the question was asked yesterday, we'd deleted 1,429 questions between game recommendations and game lists (indistinguished)

@badp Yeah, I know it isn't meant that way - but I think it often turns out that way. I'll come back to that.

I haven't made that number up, it's one thousand four hundred twenty nine

I realize I commented to the effect that "we should focus our time on preventing information rot, rather than looking for questions to close" because that's how I feel. But it wasn't a put down directed at anyone - just my thoughts on site policy.

@EBongo I have 93 closed questions on the site, btw. I know what it feels like

I think someone else's comments in that thread may have been associate with mine because I was agreeing with them - but I don't think what I said was really that inflammatory.

10:04 AM
@EBongo The thing is, I don't see how they're different tasks
They're different steps of the same task
1. Stumble on old question, either by chance or because you're being awesome and looking through old questions specifically
2. Does it still belong? If no, close it
3. Is it still up to date? If no, edit it or ask for somebody on chat to edit, or bounty
Ulla saw it needed to be closed and closed it
There's nothing improductive, offensive or no-lifer about it

@badp Yeah, but I didn't say there was. I get that editing is necessary, and something folks do out of the goodness of their heart so to speak.

Closing is just as necessary as editing
Until before the meta question, we had 0 tolerance for questions that ask for game lists
Now I don't even know anymore what makes this one question stand out from the other 1,429

I do think however that sometimes there is a groundswell from the site community to go close questions. Perhaps I could more eloquently say that we should exercise caution in any such action - since close questions has a negative vibe.

@EBongo You know what's ironic? Had we not been nice to Kyralessa and left a comment as we closed the question, she'd have "never" noticed her question being closed.
We could've just closed it and we wouldn't be here today discussing whether or not it's nice to close
Closing isn't nice. It isn't nice to be closed. It also isn't nice to argue on meta about the policy you've effortlessly enforced for two years, a policy you didn't agree to begin with when it was argued every day for six months straight, and find that suddenly you're now wrong.
Not taking it personally is hard, really hard. But we should still try

@badp Yes. It is somewhat equally ironic that the effort of cleaning up the site can generate hostility, when I believe those that do it are doing it in good faith. People have feelings though, it gets emotional sometimes.

10:11 AM
@EBongo Well, I just wanted to make sure you were accounting for the emotions of those people who do VTC as well
> If you spend your time finding two-or-three-year-old questions to close, perhaps it's a sign that you need a real hobby. (One would think, if you post here, that gaming would be enough of a hobby.)

@badp As a side note, you do have to understand I don't agree the policy applies to this question. Siting statistics of how much this policy has been enforced isn't really relevant (to me) if I don't agree it applies in this case.

@EBongo You'll see I didn't cite statistics on my answer
I'm just putting it out there so that you can see where I am coming from
As for whether or not the policy applies, do go look here:

Q: Handling game recommendations - how can we solve these two problems of quality?

Grace NoteYes, this is really long. Since the second week of our existence, there has been a battle wa...

and especially:

@badp I don't know what VTC stands for, but I infer it has to do with reviewing old questions. While there are folks that put my efforts to shame, I do that too - and I vote to close a fair bit for the amount of time I have, for the record.

VTC = Vote To Close
> Repositories are almost a subset of fact finding questions in that they seek information that is compiled into a list. However, they possess a number of traits which make them a whole different class than the other two. [problem solving and fact finding]
> First, Repositories are often non-finite; many will continue to be updated as new information comes up. Building from that, Repositories also tend to be non-static; the other question classes have a far less frequent rate of change over time.
> And coming from that, Repositories are expected to be compiled gradually. If someone asks for the finite list of weapons for a game, the more likely scenario is that an expert will generate the full list before posting it; repositories instead are built by individual contributions of singular items over time.
> The final point is that Repositories tend to place greater importance on the individual items in the list over the compiled list itself. People referencing a chart are looking to find something in that chart or to calculate/compare something in that chart; people referencing a Repository tend to simply be looking for an item that qualifies for the repository rather than specifically care for the repository as a whole.
The only thing that's apparently missing here is "compiled gradually" - and only because 1. there haven't apparently been new releases so far 2. the answerer did it all by himself
except, you know, new releases can come at any time, and if they do the answerer is probably not going to remind about the answerer gave on the site two years ago and update it
So yes, this question is totally a game repository.
The part where she asks about all games with that engine (that didn't even get answered anyway) is especially bad.
Editing a question to make it more acceptable is an obvious part of the closing process, except, you know, this being a game repository, there is no saving grace that can possibly apply according to the policy that was unchallenged as of yesterday
That was then, now I'll go have a shower. Later

@badp But herein lies the crux of the entire argument. I see this question and I can understand how some would look at it as a repository. However, it has nuances - like the fact that it is a finite list for an old game that will likely never get any updates. I weigh the options "what harm does it do"/"what is the benefit of closing it". And my inclination in all cases of marginality is to decide in favor of leaving the question open.
Thanks for discussing with me. Hope you see my intentions were good.

10:22 AM
@EBongo Finite? Says who? There can be arbitrarily many more Cultures game in the future. That's the very definition of infinity.
"Likely"? Can you source that?
Question age is a strike against the question, actually
It shows exactly what the whole main problem is here
The whole, main problem here is that while we've been closing a thousand six hundred odds questions like this one, this slipped by because it wasn't properly tagged

@badp I'm using some judgement there, but it can certainly be debated. I think I've said all I can to defend the question and it falls far short of convincing you. There is no point in digging up sources.

because things slip and we have a long tail of stuff that isn't looked at anymore
and we have questions that are outdated
and repositories rot a lot faster in general
@EBongo I wold just like to address your concerns
I'd rather not offend your intelligence and say that we can't reach an agreement here, given that we haven't yet started going in circles

@badp If you could take on faith what I said was true. That the list was "finite beyond a reasonable doubt", and that it would likely not get updates. If that was an assumption you could take as reasonable, would it convince you that this was a corner case worth sparing?
Because conversely, if I saw this as a list that would require endless maintenance, which was destined for horrible information rot - I'd close it in a second.
Oh, and I wasn't trying to dismiss you - I just don't want to hold you up if you've got stuff to do. I myself should be thinking about sleep shortly.

10:38 AM
@badp Personally, the answers look enough like spam generated from bots using Markov chains / Mechanical Turk spammers - perfect spelling and possibly grammar but nonsensical in context

10:52 AM
@EBongo Yes, if we remove from the argument the parts where we disagree then we end up in agreement
After all, what are the chances that a third trilogy for Star Wars would be released? Just look at how long Lucas Arts has been sitting on that IP while considering it closed.
@YiJiang'sEvilClone uhhh... that's not what I read

The most weird is:
> These are amazing websites. I really liked the concept of Inception. Thanks for coming up with them!
> Interesting thought about idea management going mainstream… I think it’s a byproduct of the information age we’re in…
Then there's:
> Excellent post. Very well thought and is very informative. Do keep it up
uhhhh... yeah, I think I'll destroy it now that I look at it again

Q: How common do gems appear in Temple Run 2

Bailey RowlandIn Temple Run 2, gems randomly appear, How common do they appear? Is there any way to make them more common?

11:12 AM
@badp Told you so? :P

You did :P

Oh dear, my parents are watching, no, laughing at The Karate Kid which is being shown on TV right now
It's the, uh, new one

@badp For me it is sufficient if it is reasonably unlikely - it need not be impossible. I realize that makes the policy harder to enforce since it requires judgement. However, I'd also argue the policy itself is nothing more than the collective judgement of the community manifested in a consensus.

@EBongo Honestly, the collective judgement of the community manifested in a consensus is "CLOSE EVERYTHING. " At least until a few days ago
It's, like, the whole point.
It doesn't matter what qualities questions that ask for a list of games do or do not have

@badp I feel the consensus of the community on most issue is "Close everything" - this is why I spoke up on this particular Meta. I'd like to see that stance change because of the damage I feel it does, though I'm not optimistic.

11:16 AM
@EBongo We don't do it on other less loved questions categories such as:
* Troubleshooting questions
* Questions about video game services (think Steam Community)
* Questions about video game console apps (think Netflix on PS3)
* Questions asking for mods (apparently; I don't know how it makes sense)
* Questions asking about plot elements
* Questions about game identification (depends on whether or not you have something tangible)
We only give this treatment to the list of questions found in the About and FAQ pages.
Game "recollection" (I remember playing this but what's it called), recommendation (I liked this, what else will I like), repositories (Give me all games that are X) (see a running theme here?), design (why did they do it this way?), speculation (Will there be a new X?), piracy (halp crack doesn't wrok)
and in all of these cases, except speculation and piracy (which are more obvious), it is not for lack of trying
Just because we stopped trying two years before it doesn't mean we didn't try
What was all that about "learning from the past so you don't have to relive it?"

@badp I think the fact that we allow other controversial questions is beside the point. To your previous "it doesn't matter what qualities [a question has]" I think that is fundamental to our disagreement.

@EBongo No, your point is that we overuse "ban everything." The fact that we don't overuse "ban everything" is very much the point.

Well.. it's all a matter of degrees I suppose :). The fact that I feel we could be better, does not change the fact that we could be worse, you are right.

I was too concerned that "ban everything" could've become the default, standard go-to solution for all policy matters; turns out that's not what's happened.
Reminder: the only "ban everything" stance I've supported at the start of each argument of this kind - beyond "speculation" and "piracy" is mod-rec - and only because of our "ban everything" stance on game-recs
Often times I've ended up changing stances either out exhaustion or simply changing my mind

But you support "ban everything" for lists, isn't that what you're position is on this?

11:28 AM
@EBongo This is the community's stance. I've grown to accept and appreciate and defend it. It's not mine, per se, however.
It was literally "the collective judgement of the community manifested in a consensus" until that question happened.
The badp of today does think that while we might be able to kludge lists into more or less working shapes, it would be that: a kludge
We're very much ill equipped for lists, but I've already argued that
Wikipedia has per-game pages; a category system; automatically generated category lists; a shitton of categories
It's like game repository heaven
What do we have?

Yes, which makes it a perfect Meta question. Someone thought "does the 'ban everything' policy for lists exclude some good questions", and I agreed.

A textbox that supports bulleted lists.
That's what we have.
@EBongo It's a price. You can't get reap the benefits of a policy without paying the associated price.

In this area I certainly agree wiki has us beat on tools. I just also think we beat wiki on expert knowledge. For general knowledge we're equivalent.

"Get out of jail free cards" are very much not something I believe in
@EBongo And that's where I disagree - if there's expertise involved in browsing mobygames to assemble a list of games from the same franchise, it's not videogame expertise.
The accepted, +6 answer says nothing about the game itself other than "I think they're based on the same engine."
It also fails completely to address the list of other non-Cultures games based on the engine.
This whole question and answer pair really isn't that gem some people make it out to be.
There's very little that's awesome about it actually.
(Since the Wikipedia article didn't mention the original game expansion, I added it to the Wikipedia article. Now that answer and the article are on par for amount of sourced statements)
Some could argue that all of the effort we've spent on this meta discussion could've been instead spent "in more productive hobbies" like maintaining some other lists we shouldn't have deleted in the first place
I will reply that if people were to invest time into going back to look at questions and answers from 2010, I'd much rather we'd go and maintain questions about how games work rather than attempting to be kind of like wikipedia except worse
given that documenting how games work is very much the whole point of Arqade
compiling lists of games does not further that goal sensibly
imvho

@badp Yes, I think exhaustion is kicking in for me in this case as well. I've said my piece and given my reopen vote. I'll continue to advocate against a "close everything" mentality in favor of a judgement base approach. You keep enforcing the policies of the site - I know it is your job.

Moderation is a hobby, not a job
We're not employees of SE

Right... elected duty - as it were.

Well, Anna is, but still.

charge, burden to bear, etc.

"hobby", really. Moderators are only required to clear flags
not clearing flags is the only way to temporarily lose your diamond due to inactivity

Aaaannnyywaayy... You see I have nothing against folks that devote time to enforcing site policies, yes?

11:41 AM
such as "closing old questions"?

Right. One of the main reasons I wanted to talk to you was the "smear campaign" comment. I never intended anything personal against anyone - I wanted to make sure that was understood.

I'm happy we cleared that.

Done and done. Alright - I'm going to try and get some more sleep. Cheers.

sleep well

Awww dang
a save point, mneans I've gotta get dressed and go shoppin D:

Q: How to get the bottle on the tower near the railway in Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, Go West, Young Raccoon?

Jasper de VriesHow do I get the bottle on the tower near the railway in Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, Go West, Young Raccoon? I've tried climbing the tower, using the paraglider, using different characters; all unsuccessful. Do you need to buy a power up or gain an ability?

Suggestions for tag name - this one is only one char too long

@YiJiang'sEvilClone T_T

I hope that's in jest :P

@StrixVaria ಠ_ಠ
The Wikipedia article also suggests Sly 4

I don't see a problem with my suggestion.

@StrixVaria The TLA is an unfortunate one

Q: Rename the [legend-of-heroes-tits] tag

JosefvzI'm not sure but i think that the tag legend-of-heroes-tits should have something else in it instead of 'tits' or am i just being overly sensitive? The game name is Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Everyone's mind is just too dirty.

Well you go ahead. I'll take bets on how long before the Meta question pops up
(The TITS tag lasted for 9 hours)

12:18 PM
At any rate, yes, is what we should use
at least until they DO release "Sly Cooper 4"

You should at least make a synonym for people searching based on the title.

Master	←		Synonym
sly-cooper-4 × 1	sly-cooper-thieves-in-tim
@StrixVaria There you have it

Tag limit sucks.

I haz a steam code for Rome: Total War - Gold Edition available if anyone wants it (already have the game). Ping me here or in The Comms Room on ServerFault.

Is gravatar's image resize algorithm better than imgur's?
Just used imgur to upload a new avatar. I wonder how this would compare if I uploaded the same avatar to Gravatar

Q: Conditions for skeleton spawning

Meraj99I have made a skeleton grinder and, for an unknown reason, they don't seem to spawn. My grinder is of the type that the skeleton spawns at a high distance and drops to his death. Are there some conditions required for skeletons to spawn? And yes, it is dark enough. Are there any conditions lik...

Q: Is there a way not to damage your allies and civilians while using explosive weapons?

ChrisHateZI decided to play Fallout New Vegas again, and this time I'm going for explosive weapons as my primaries. The main problem i currently have with them (other then blowing my limbs off while using them in CQC, which is what i can easily fix with certain perks) is that they will damage any civilian...

Q: Massive area to fill in

Meraj99Due to some issues on my server, I was forced to remove a massive hole of about 100k blocks on my server. The problem is, it is really close to the spawn and I don't want anyone seeing it. Is there any way to cover it up? I have tried using WorldEdit and my server crashes. Is there any way to...

Q: Bioshock 1 stuck at first level

RexSo I see the first view of Rapture, the bathysphere stops, I can see some guy standing outside the window,..and then nothing. I can look around with the mouse but can't move, interact or do anything else. This is version 1, and the 1.1 patch doesn't work.

There we go. New avatar has finally propagated to chat

WELP!
This weekend is getting better and better!
Now an entire line of pixels on my Nexus 7 looks like rainbows when it's supposed to be white

@badp Is it still under warranty?

yeah. It's ~2 months old.

@Lazers I'm quite sure the Elo rating system was invented by Elo, though I'm not sure that's what he's asking about

It's much more annoying that my crappy dumbphone camera can show
changing the view angle changes the colors

Could you... at least get the shot in focus?
But yeah, send it back. There's nothing else you can do about it

you're WAY overestimating my crappy dumbphone camera

I think this avatar is a little more subtle. It's also a little more colorful.
I like colorful.

Argh
ASUS
How am I going to specify two defects in 75 characters

@badp SCREEN NOT WORK!

@fbueckert Not just that; I want them to fix the speakers cracking terribly
So far, in great Arqade tradition, I'm at seventy six characters
Souno speaker pessimo ad alto volume
Linea di pixel difettosi quando bianchi

Huh? What sort of form would limit you to 75 characters only?

The ASUS Warranty sort of form
I guess it's okay if you only have one thing to specify

I wonder if it's just client side validation.
In that case you could just edit the maxlength attribute on the textarea

2:56 PM
Oh I know
there's an additional form entry asking when does the defect happen
I'll abuse that one
or not!
Gli speaker gracchiano ad alto voume
Segmento di pixel morti ("arcobaleno")
<3 Twitter
(Yes, that's 75 precisely)
