I kind of stopped working on it for a while, trying to get it going again.
@AshleyNunn Heh, well, they all have download links, so...
user15026
@GnomeSlice Yeah, that's what I mean.
@AshleyNunn It... is? I must have missed what you meant then.
x_x
@GnomeSlice You watch Moon yet?
user15026
@GnomeSlice I mean I think they don't super want people to use their fonts, but there is a download link, so it's not like they really can stop you, having provided you a way to do so
@Fluttershy No, stop asking. I'm going to see if my dad can get it from his friend, who downloads tons of movies for him.
@Fluttershy By the way, what's it rated?
14:02
@GnomeSlice In America, where the ratings board doesn't use silly ratings, it's R.
Hm, none of these fonts really look like what I need anyway.
@Fluttershy Oh... would it be awkward to watch with, say, my father?
user15026
@Fluttershy silly ratings?
@GnomeSlice There are no like... Sex scenes. It's a guy in a Space Station who is slowly losing his mind... <_<
@AshleyNunn What are your movie ratings there?
@Fluttershy Ah, okay.
@Fluttershy Most things that are R in the states are 14A here.
user15026
@Fluttershy G, PG, 14A, 18A, R, A. Explanation
14:04
(14 years, or accompanied by an adult)
user15026
There might be more I am missing, but that's all I can think of
@AshleyNunn Sounds about right.
@GnomeSlice Because that 1 year difference between 14A and PG-13 really helps... >_>
I think we just have PG, I don't think it's PG-13
user15026
@Fluttershy I think 14A is stricter than PG-13
14:05
@AshleyNunn I thought ours was just 'PG'.
user15026
@GnomeSlice i'm checking.
user15026
Fixed! :D
Fuck, the font readme is just a bunch of gibberish, too.

@GnomeSlice Yep. :)

user15026
14:09
@GnomeSlice I suspect it is japanese, or the like, and your computer isn't set up to read the characters.
Must be, just had the same thing happen with a pair of fonts from a font resource I know to be 'legit'.
@GnomeSlice Yeah, Asian fonts do funny things when attempting to display them without the proper fonts installed.
Unicode usually turns them all into squares.

@RedRiderX How did you do that?
user15026
@RedRiderX That's a better translation.
14:11
@GnomeSlice With magic.
@GnomeSlice And the char-sets in Notepad++
Seriously, how did you translate that, it's just gibberish because I don't have fonts with the correct asian alphabet.
@RedRiderX What? You must show me how do dis
pastes in notepad++
@GnomeSlice The gibberish is caused by incorrect encoding
Poke around the menus and you should be able to set the encoding to the correct one
@RedRiderX What does 'you should save the current modification' mean? What 'modification'?
Oh, hey, I tried Japanese, and I see actual characters now.
@GnomeSlice I was going to write something fancy, but yeah you found it.

Q: How do I get to where the Echo Gem is leading?

Ashley NunnI have the Echo Gem that I stole from someone's house, and used it to get to an area where the indicator turns red (indicating, I assume, that that is where I need to be) I am on my boat. Problem is, I can't get to where I need to apparently be. There are rocks everywhere impeding my path, and ...

14:19
Hm... just got an email from my college supposedly about new policies regarding the use of copyright-protected materials, with some pdf files... but it just feels like a scam email.
Ah, guess not, just checked my actual college email.
Doesn't read them
user15026
@GnomeSlice Access Copyright? Or something else?
@AshleyNunn Yeah, that's what it's about, whatever that means.
user15026
@GnomeSlice Ick. I -hate- Access Copyright. It is terrible and good for no one except the people who make the texts and such to get more money. grump
user15026
I was never so glad when my uni rejected it.
14:22
@Wipqozn Some of these comics are so thought-provoking. I like the alt text.
@AshleyNunn I don't even know what it is. Anyway, it looks like my college decided not to renew it, whatever that means.
So, I guess that's good, from what you're saying.
user15026
@GnomeSlice Good.
Indeed, that's very good.
user15026
It is a thing that lets you use more of a work than Canadian copyright law allows, but it is incredibly expensive, and "additional stipulations would proscribe faculty and students from keeping copies of journal articles in personal libraries, or on personal computers or email accounts."
Access Copyright is one of the most backwards, outdated institutions Canada HAS for universities.
user15026
@fbueckert THIS. I hate it. Haaate it.
user15026
14:24
Access Copyright has also started charging universities for e-mailing links to copyrighted information, even in cases where there was no copyrighted material present. They are charging the full price for each link e-mailed
user15026
That's right - they charge you for EMAILING A LINK
@AshleyNunn aka. "Give us a truckload of money, and we WON'T sue you when you inevitably break some copyright law to make it easier to teach your students."
user15026
@fbueckert lol pretty much
user15026
Sorry. Copyright and access to information is kinda one of my causes. XD
@AshleyNunn ...
14:29
Ah shit. Forgot to backup my SpaceChem Mobile save game while upgrading the tablet to CM10
user15026
@TimStone Isn't it awesome? XD
user15026
@GnomeSlice I saw this the other day, thought you might be theoretically interested, maybe. coursera.org/course/digitalsounddesign
@AshleyNunn Do they have someone standing by the printer handing out bills when people use citations in papers, too?
user15026
@TimStone Oh man. Don't give them any ideas.
@GnomeSlice If your interested in a primer on the subject of Access copyright., I recommend this particular podcast that is on the subject.
user15026
14:30
@RedRiderX Yes. That explains it well.
@AshleyNunn You listened to Search Engine?
user15026
@RedRiderX That particular one, yes - it came up in a discussion at work at some point.
@AshleyNunn Is this an online course?
user15026
@GnomeSlice Yep. Free, online.
@AshleyNunn Free!?
user15026
14:33
@GnomeSlice Yep. Everything Cousera does is free :)
What.
Where do I sign up.
Nevermind, found it.
user15026
@GnomeSlice Yeah, it is pretty awesome.
If anyone wants a display of arrogance of the worst kind, read this meta thread.
If I change my nameserver, does it affect my MX records?
@fredley yes
14:35
@fbueckert To be honest, the chat transcript is pretty bad.
MX records are just another DNS entry, like A or TXT
@pixel Right. So if I've updated my nameservers, do I now have to define my MX records elsewhere?
@GnomeSlice All I see is someone hitting Sheldon levels of condescension and not understanding that maybe, MAYBE, he might be wrong.
user15026
@fbueckert Oh, I remember that.
@fredley if you've changed your nameserver, you need to add MX records to that nameserver for email at that domain to continue working
14:36
@pixel Right, thanks
user2334
The only place he went wrong on was entering the C++ chat room, which is full of the most insufferable types of people who believe they're God's gift to Stack Overflow
user15026
@MarkTrapp Yeah, that was kinda where it all went badly
*sigh* Google Market Play hasn't improved with 4.x
user2334
As someone not in the know, he could be forgiven for that most grievous of sins
Time to redownload ALL the things. Silly update required wiping the entire disk.
14:39
@fbueckert Wow.
@SaintWacko Indeed.
C++ is so 2001.
user2334
C++ more like C-- amirite
@MarkTrapp So....B?
I had a C++ course in high school.
I was horrible at it.
14:43
surely C-- would be D
I only passed because of @Mana.
user15026
@fbueckert I would say more like D.
user2334
@GnomeSlice shocker!
user2334
I kid I kid
Also, just out of curiosity, have any of you heard of this C compiler?
14:44
@AshleyNunn C++ is D. C-- is B.
B is a programming language that was developed at Bell Labs. It is almost extinct, as it was replaced with the C language. It was mostly the work of Ken Thompson, with contributions from Dennis Ritchie, and first appeared circa 1969. History Ken Thompson wrote B basing it mainly on the BCPL language he had used to write Unix while in the Multics project. B was essentially the BCPL system stripped of any component that Thompson felt he could do without, in order to make it fit within the memory capacity of the minicomputers of the time. The language also included some changes made to sui...
user15026
@fbueckert Not sure I get that logic..
@AshleyNunn Alphabet.
@AshleyNunn alphabet in ascending order starts at A and ends at Z
user2334
Inner nerd rage urge to kill rising… rising...
14:44
If we're going by grades, then yes, I have it backwards.
user15026
@fbueckert Haha, you want me to understand letters.
user2334
B, C++, and D are all different languages haldhqwhdkjsad
user15026
grins Of course they are.
@MarkTrapp Hey, you started it.
user15026
I am slowly learning Python, for real this time, and it is actually making sense. I am baffled and delighted by this - I never thought I had the right "brain" for any type of programming
14:47
Apparently it was pretty popular.
I'm about to start learning VB .NET
I always wondered why my dad had 'Micro C' vanity plates when I was younger.
I guess he made a lot of money from that.
I have a Access VBA system that we want to change over, so that should be interesting
user2334
@AshleyNunn I want to like Python. I feel like I should like Python because everyone else does. But the whitespace issue kills me, and for some reason I find it very hard to read. It's the pesto of languages.
user15026
@MarkTrapp pesto? I like pesto.
user15026
14:48
It works for me, because it is relatively simple.
user15026
@MarkTrapp Also, whitespace issue?
@MarkTrapp I'm more or less in the same boat. It has some very nice features, but a syntax I just can't stand.
@SaintWacko VB.NET is quite friendly.
user15026
@MartinSojka I suspect a lot of it is based on what you are used to - since i have no bais in anything else, I can handle whatever it does that bothers other people.
@fbueckert Well, that's good
14:49
@MarkTrapp ...Whitespace? Another language that requires whitespace to be compiled properly?
@AshleyNunn Leading whitespace (indentation) is relevant to the program flow; that's different for almost every other language out there.
All .NET languages in general are quite friendly
Hopefully it doesn't push out any of the other languages in my head :D
user2334
@AshleyNunn Whitespace is significant because it defines scope; in other languages, like all those based on Algol (C, C++, Java, PHP, etc.), a special character (a bracket or a brace) defines scope so you don't have to conform to a specific indentation scheme
I can't believe I've survived this day at work without falling asleep...
14:52
@pixel You're getting SLEEEEEEEEPYYYYYYY.
@fbueckert don't do that, I'm really absolutely knackered
I could pass out while walking home at this rate
@pixel Stayed up grinding, I take it?
yes
I have a whole bunch of screenshots that I could turn into questions
but I'm wary of posting up 50 questions that I already know the answers to
@pixel Are some of these questions "Wtf?"
user2334
@AshleyNunn well, not all those based on Algol, but in general. Also an issue of where a line ends; many languages have a special character that says "this statement ends here", so statements can wrap onto multiple lines (which improves legibility). With Python, that's not the case AFIAK, because the new line delimits statements
14:54
I always get screenshots that match that question
No, they're clever use of game mechanics that break the grindfest that Blizzard have created
like grinding factions up to exalted overnight etc
@pixel Are some others of these questions "How did I get there?"
I've found a method of getting 85-90 in probably 1/3rd of the time I spent doing it on launch days
I don't see "how did I get there?" questions that relevant in WoW, due to hearthstones and summoning
user15026
@marktrapp fair enough. I can see how that might be irritating for people used to a different style of doing things. Still curious how that relates to pesto though. ;)
I got literally 500+ achievement points lastnight
14:57
oh Lord
@AshleyNunn Hard to obfuscate code when you can't jam it all onto a single line. :P
I wish I was making this up
Matthew Bellamy, one of the Muse, just went on record on Radio Deejay with his solution on how to make their concerts more sustainable
Speaking of languages where white space is important, I like this one:
Befunge is a stack-based, reflective, esoteric programming language. It differs from conventional languages in that programs are arranged on a two-dimensional grid. "Arrow" instructions direct the control flow to the left, right, up or down, and loops are constructed by sending the control flow in a cycle. It has been described as "a cross between Forth and Lemmings." History The language was originally created by Chris Pressey in 1993 as an attempt to devise a language which is as hard to compile as possible — note that the p command allows for self-modifying code. Nevertheles...
he says he gotta email this KESH guy who's invented a generator of serveral megawatts that just goes on indefinitely for free.
@MartinSojka I was expecting Whitespace (the language)
14:58
You could even make a game out of it. Extend it to 3D for total brain melting. :)
I wish I could've facepalmed, but I was driving. I guess I should've face-honked?
I'm just going to throw this out there: COBOL
@badp What does it mean for a concert to be "sustainable"?
As much as I love programming, this language can die in a fire.
@StrixVaria planet resources running out, green tech, that stuff
14:59
@badp A perpetual motion machine, of course! Why didn't I think of that.
I stopped paying attention to Muse after their dubstep teaser video.
@StrixVaria This question was asked because of their dubstep song, "Unsustainable"
Ever heard of Argh!?
@SaintWacko I hear it quite a lot. About half of the time I try to make a joke.
@StrixVaria I figured out that adding a sink to the kitchen ensures you don't run out of trays for your prisoners to use.
15:01
@MartinSojka Argh
@fbueckert Ow, conversational whiplash
@SaintWacko Multitask.
Keep up!
user15026
@badp no. I refuse to believe someone is actually that dumb. Also, yeah, facehonking is what you should have done.
@fbueckert I caught up after a moment of intense confusion
@AshleyNunn I wish I could. I wish I could
what's worse is, the interviewer happily and excitedly translated what he said in Italian without the slightest hint of disbelief
Why does the tab key in Chrome on Android using the default keyboard in text fields create a tab character instead of jumping to the next field?
15:03
I just switched off the radio midway of the translation out of despair, so maybe he did save himself
user15026
@badp that's terrible. But also hilarious.
In unrelated news, rumour mill produced the interesting bit of info that 2K Marin's XCOM (the FPS) might be "significantly changed" before release. So ... turn-based FPS, please? ;) Anyway, even GameInformer picked that up; I guess it's a slow news Monday: gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/10/01/…
Why in the world is the default music widget called "Apollo"?
@fbueckert There's a sink?
That might be useful to build in my next prison.
I never ran out of trays because my prisoners got too busy brawling well before that.
I'M SO HOMESICK I'M SO ANGRY I DON'T WANT TO USE THAT PHONE 2 FEET FROM ME I JUST WANT TO PUNCH SOMEBODY
@StrixVaria Yeah; found out after some of my prisoners were complaining about food, even though they were all of a foot away FROM food.
15:09
@StrixVaria You're one bad prison matron.
So I threw a sink in there, and one of my cooks spent a solid 12 hours cleaning each and every tray.
@fbueckert I remember once a prisoner spent all 8 hours of "Sleep" time jumping up and down complaining that he was bored. As soon as sleep time ended and he got free time, he went to sleep.
@StrixVaria I filled in all the empty time slots with Free Time. That way, they go and do things they need to.
@fbueckert Currently I think the safest way to do it is to make the entire schedule Free Time except for a few Eat times thrown in.
The cooks don't make any food if there's no Eat time.
user15026
What game is this?
15:11
Of course, most of the time, that free time is spent pilfering knives from the kitchen, for some reason.
@AshleyNunn Prison Architect
Think Dwarf Fortress in a prison setting.
user15026
It sounds awesome.
@AshleyNunn It's still in Alpha, so the tutorial is somewhat non-existant.
You know, this game sounds a lot like Japanese life simulation games ("Princess Maker", "THE iDOLM@STER" and so on)...
user15026
So basically poke at stuff and see what goes boom?
@AshleyNunn More or less.
15:12
@StrixVaria I wonder if Introversion built their prisoner model after @spugsley
user15026
That's doable. Besides - lack of clear instructions = more Arqade questions.
Can you add punchbags made of babies to the prison perhaps?
@fbueckert Man, it really is like DF, then
You get some guidelines from designating rooms, because they have requirements as to what they need for the room to be functional, but extra stuff (like sinks) gets no explanation.
@fbueckert And drains.
15:14
@StrixVaria Yeah, drains.
Need those.
Unless you like flooded prisons.
user15026
Mmm floods.
I crammed 16 prisoners into my holding cell, and the sheer number of KNIVES that kept getting found was ASTOUNDING.
@fbueckert Good way to get rid of those pesky noble prisoners
I probably spent more on knives for my chefs than I did for food.
Heh. And we petition Toady One for years to add a reason to build sewers into our fortresses (I build them anyway, then throw in the remains of failed invasions there).
15:16
@MartinSojka I usually just have a pile of goblin remains outside the fortress gate
I need to start experimenting with defense mechanisms again. I want to try weaponizing minecarts, steam, and magma mist
user2334
@AshleyNunn It's a bit from Seinfeld
user2334
@SaintWacko Sewers are awesome. You need to send down people to clean up the growth in there, else they get stuck and don't empty properly (or even flood the lower levels of your fort, though that's rare), and if any gobbos or elves or whatever survive down there for longer, they get names. Too bad they don't breed.
In other words, they are self-made small problem generators to keep you occupied. :)
@MartinSojka I had that problem with my waterfall generator. If something blocked the pipes, it would back up and flood out the pump operators -.-
I eventually rigged up a sensor that would automatically close off the pipe if it overflowed
I typically just have big vertical overflow shafts leading deep down and then to the side of the map.
15:24
On this particular fortress, I had happened to embark in an are partially covered by an aquifer
So I just pumped the water out of the aquifer, then right back into it
Because my pumps weren't quite moving enough water, I had sensors in the pool under the waterfall to operate trapdoors to regulate the water level
Doesn't moving liquids like waterfall generators kill performance?
A bit, but a typical 4-pump water mist generator above your main dining room is usually bearable.
In my last DF2010 game I tried draining the first cavern level using pumps
Succeeded in moving out about 1/5 of the water, which revealed trees growing under the water
@MartinSojka Any advice on improving performance?
My fortresses tend to end not with a bang but a whimper
They slow down so much it's no longer fun
BTW, the new version of DFHack (0.34.11r2) can display in-game dialogues now, including text input (to name your stockpiles, for example). It also has a DwarfTherapist-like display for setting up labours in the unit list.
15:32
or Fun
@SaintWacko Did you try the MasterWork mod? It gets rid of a lot of different types for wood, leather and so on, and the creators say it speeds up the game by some 25%.
@MartinSojka Wow. I'll have to check that out
Link: bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=98196.0 (the stable version is 1.9.5)
Hm, I wonder if I can just use the single types of material while leaving the rest vanilla
pl_2fort_multipath_rc3 wat
15:44
@badp ?
@MartinSojka I just connected to a server running that map
which I just learned exists
Sounds like one of the countless clones with a single ignorable gimmicks added to them.
user2334
@MartinSojka a turn-based FPS sounds unbearable. I didn't think anyone's ever done something like that, but apparently there was a Worms iteration that was in first-person mode, and it was awful
user2334
turn-based games work because you can see the whole board, or at least a tactical representation of your surroundings. Kill that and… ugh.
@MarkTrapp There is always a relevant Seinfeld quote.
user2334
15:57
@Wipqozn Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Wolfenstein RPG is a mobile phone and iOS game from 2008 and 2009 developed by id Software. The two versions are nearly the same, but the IOS version has better graphics and one extra level involving driving a car. The game was preceded by Doom RPG in 2005 and succeeded by Doom II RPG in 2009 and 2010. All three games combine first-person shooter and role-playing video game elements. Gameplay The gameplay follows the recipe from Doom RPG as it is shown in the first person while being a turn-based role-playing game rather than a shooter and puts emphasis on the plot. Combat and movement...
Though I have no idea how well the game plays, really.
@MarkTrapp No, of course not! A persons sexual preference is nobodies business but their own.
Well snap
It looks like it was deleted
Good job SciFi.
user2334
Deleted by a mod, didn't even get the dignity of a close
It's so nice that our site is perfect, and doesn't allow any stupid questions.
user2334
If I were a betting man, the OP wanted to delete it but couldn't because the answer that said it was a silly question was upvoted
user2334
16:03
@Wipqozn WE ARE A UNIQUE SNOWFLAKE AMONGST A SEA OF MEDIOCRITY
@MarkTrapp I KNOW IT'S TRUE BECAUSE IT'S IN ALL CAPS
user2334
CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR TRUE
@Wipqozn We don't!? Coulda fooled me!
@fbueckert No, we don't. We're prefect. All other Stack Exchange sites should strive to be more like us.
user2334
@MartinSojka Well, it's a single-player RPG, which is a different breed. I just bought it, and it plays like Dungeon Master (or Legend of Grimlock): four directions, lots of dialogue, simplistic enemies, RPG-like progression elements. A multiplayer turn-based FPS on the other hand...
user2334
16:10
also for some reason there are a ton of chickens you have to shoot
@MarkTrapp that reminds me, I need to return to playing Legend of Grimrock at some point.
...along with a host of other games.
16:30

Q: Are there any unlockable characters and how to unlock them?

AntoEverything is in the title. I'm playing the PC version, but I'd be curious to know if the unlockables differ from the console version.

@StrixVaria Oh, hey. October 8th is Thanksgiving in Canada.
Ugh. I can't answer questions nearly as well since IT installed a SonicWall filter :(
All the sites where I get information on games are blocked
@fbueckert You just learned that? ;)
16:42
@JasonBerkan I just made the correlation between that and XCOM.
@fbueckert So I need to cancel my family plans then?
@GnomeSlice CS5.5
@RonanForman That would explain why I can't open your stuff.
@JasonBerkan If there ever comes a time where games are more important than family, I respectfully submit you should readjust your priorities.
@GnomeSlice Oh right.
16:43
@fbueckert Depends on your family...
@GnomeSlice If you're making Thanksgiving plans with your family, then your family isn't a drunken dysfunctional mess.
@fbueckert Very true. My comment was in jest. I seriously doubt I will be buying XCOM right away, due to no time to play it.
@JasonBerkan I know. :P I kinda doubt I will, either.
This looks sick!
This is on Steam now
