@fbueckert Sounds classy

Is there any way to see how many people are interested in a Greenlight game or how close it is to getting greenlighted or whatever the process is there?

@StrixVaria I'm not sure, but I'll star that so it gets more attention.

@StrixVaria Isn't there a progress percentage on every game?

@YiJiang I could only see it after I voted.
I've only even looked at 1 game, though, so there is no way to confirm generically how it works.

@Everybody talking about quebec. The guy that shot was a nut. He wasn't even close to the stage (he didn't even get in the theater), but he was going for a kill on the premier ministre.
I'm looking at that article and theres so much wrong
The prime minister wasnt in shock, she didn't know about the incident until after she was back at her hotel

12:10 AM
@Fredy31 Yeah, I seen a picture of the guy when they were dragging him away, he looked deranged.
He obviously has some serious mental issues.

Hmmm, I remember seeing the stats on games (percentage progress, number of favourites) without having to vote on the game, but it seems that they've changed it

She was more WTF is going on
Nobody heard anything. The militants shouting covered the sound of bullets
And it was outside

Dr. Gordon Freeman is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the Half-Life video game series. As a theoretical physicist, he finds himself thrust into a battle for survival against both alien and human forces. Throughout the series, Gordon must face hostile situations against overwhelming odds, often without backup. As a means of immersing the player in the role, Gordon never speaks, and there are no cutscenes or mission briefings—all action is viewed through Gordon's eyes, with the player retaining control of Gordon's actions at nearly all times. The images of Gordon are only ...

Q: How do I kill time?

RedRiderXIn Treasure Adventure Game, there are numerous locations that are only accessible at certain times of the day. Q: Why did people vote to close this question about Harbinger in ME3?

KtashWhy does Harbinger have only 4 claws? This question was closed, and I honestly don't know why. In reading the question, I am confused as to how people thought it was not constructive. I've voted to reopen, but I want to hear the other side.

1:38 AM
@Lazers Because playing games of Poke The Plot Hole is the sort of dumb shit that makes scifi.se so awful.
5

@LessPop_MoreFizz See my response to your comment lol

@Ktash Well...the answer doesn't really answer the question.

Yeah, the answer doesn't answer the question at all.
It totally sidesteps the question and basically says "Well Harbinger is special because of xyz", but it doesn't address the specific differences in form in any way whatsoever.

If the question were asking about why Harbinger is unique among the Reapers, it'd be closer, but at the moment the question is specifically asking about leg count.

Which is a pretty big indicating factor
"it was formed in the image of the Leviathans"

1:44 AM
@Ktash But why were the reapers formed in in his image somehow different? It's pretty clearly a game of poke the plot hole.

Anything we can do to be less like SciFi.SE is fundamentally a good thing.
8

@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm not saying the answer given is the best possible
But the answer does not make the question good or bad
I'd recommend reading up on the Leviathans first masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Leviathan
Only some reapers are modeled after them

@Ktash I'm saying that the answer given is indicative of the sort of shit you end up with when you play games of poke the plot hole.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Just because this answer isn't up to snuff, doesn't mean you should close the question. The two are related but independent
If the answer had been that there is no known explanation for these drawings, does that immediately make it a bad question?

@Ktash I'm saying that the answer is indicative of the problem with the question. That it's fundamentally a game of 'poke the plot hole'. The fact that the answer attempts to inelegantly sidestep that fact by answering an orthagonal question (Why is Harbinger special as opposed to Why does Harbinger have a different number of limbs) is indicative of the problem with the question.
@Ktash No, but the question is framed in a way to allow the 'they're purely decorative there is no explanation' answer.

1:49 AM
Harbinger is special partially because he has an odd number of limbs
@LessPop_MoreFizz And how is "There is known in universe explanation regarding his lack of a 5th leg" not acceptable
(sorry for the repings)

HI PEOPLE

HI SPUGSLEY

This is where I point out that I would be perfectly okay with chucking most narrative questions out the window to avoid having this argument, but as it is, I'm going to have to settle for the simple "I know it when I see it" and end up having this argument periodically.

@spugsley HI SPUGLY
@Pyrodante You still have one of those skin codes? =3

@LessPop_MoreFizz Alright, I want to have the can of worms conversation with you about why you think narrative is not good but I also need to get work done tonight so I think I have to let it slide

1:58 AM
@Ktash It's not that I don't think straightforward narrative questions can't work.
It's that I don't think they're important enough to save in the face of not having to have arguments about questions like this one.
There's an old Jewish concept of 'build a fence outside the law' that's useful in understanding my thinking on a lot of this stuff.

I think the narrative questions add the most actual value to the site. I can look up solutions to 99% of the problems I post here without ever doing more than a single Google search. But the ones that actually are interesting (and the most useful) require research and understanding
... okay, I really need to get work done though. And eat. So ping me later and we can have that debate.
In the meantime, write an answer to my meta post, make comments, or do whatever. I'll respond when I get a chance :)

2:45 AM
Every time I respond to a meta post, I feel all like AUGH WHAT IF PEOPLE THINK I SAID A STUPID THING AUGH. But hey, @ktash, I wrote a thing on your post.

@AshleyNunn That's why I avoid meta. I've learned to just not care. Politics has taken all of my give-a-damn these days, anyway.

user15026
@Koviko grins I can't help it, I am a soft touch with a bit of a hero complex. I tend to care about EVERYTHING.

user15026
I have managed to not get tangled too much in politics or environmental causes or religious debates, but meta will grab me every time on a site I care about.

3:00 AM
GOODNIGHT BRIDGE

@Fluttershy g'night!

I mainly bother with meta because it's one of the few places I get an excuse to be snarky and get away with it.

user2334
The whole ME3 question needing to be open on Arqade argument would be a lot more convincing if it wasn't already on-topic on SciFi.SE, where they welcome such questions with open arms

user2334
We don't need to hold our nose and accept them: there's a place to ask them that doesn't merely tolerate them and we're not hurting for questions

user2334
Speaking of SciFi.SE: I just hit 10k there. I'm part of the problem!

3:10 AM
Bill Clinton is fucking killing it.
By the way.

user2334
Is he whaling on the sax?

He can hunt whales with a sax?
That's impressive.

@MarkTrapp He was already upstaged on the sax by Marsalis.

user2334
@StrixVaria I see you've fallen into my carefully laid trap to demonstrate my superior homophonic skills

Unless by 'whales' you mean plump women, in which case, given his historic proclivities, I'd say that yes, he probably can hunt whales with a sax. Quite effectively.

3:14 AM
Homophones are crucially important.

Also, I bet you could hunt whales with one of these, though it'd be pretty badass:
Seax (also sax, sæx, sex, latinized sachsum) is an Old English term for "knife". In modern archaeology (and further in this article), the term seax is used specifically for the fighting knife typical of the Germanic peoples (and especially the Saxons, whose tribal name derives from the weapon) during the Migration period and the Early Middle Ages. In heraldry, the seax is a charge consisting of a curved sword with a notched blade, appearing, for example, in the coats of arms of Essex and the former Middlesex. Old English seax, sax and Old Frisian sax are identical with Old Saxon and O...

user2334
You see, most people think it's "wailing on <insert instrument here>" but they are wrong wrong wrong. It's indeed "whaling on <insert instrument here>" as "to whale" means to thrash, beat, or strike vigorously

user2334
Or to hunt whales.

@MarkTrapp Actually, in the case of a sax, 'wailing' would be more appropriate, as a saxophone is very capable of creating what can only be described as a wailing tone.
Certainly, one would not wail on the drums, or the piano. But I see nothing inaccurate about wailing on a horn.
Certainly, one does not beat their horn vigorously. Unless we have moved past homophones into euphemisms. And while I'm sure this is an activity of which Bill Clinton is fond (see previous comment about aforeknown proclivities), he does generally have the composure and grace not to do so on stage in public.

user2334
NOPE. You can wail, a sax can wail, but you can't "wail on" something

3:19 AM
@MarkTrapp You can wail on someone's shoulder.

@MarkTrapp Now you're splitting hairs over the preposition.

user2334
"Man, that sax really wailed. Bill Clinton really whaled on it"

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz Well yes that's the whole point of this exercise, to snootily lord the pedantic usage of the word "whale" over people

Also, Clinton is now 50 minutes over his alloted time.
And he's showing absolutely no signs of running out of steam

user2334
Haha, wat

user2334
Is he ad libbing now? Did he bring out a chair?

@MarkTrapp His prepared remarks, the script of which was distributed was 30 minutes.
He's been ad libbing the whole time
and just killing it killing it killing it

user2334
See if I was running the DNC I would've had an empty chair on the stage next to the podium and made it verboten to mention it or call attention to it. Just have it there, empty. Bonus points if each speaker has to carry it out and set it down before giving their speech

@MarkTrapp Kal Penn made a joke about it.

3:46 AM
Aww man, I barely missed the Harbinger discussion :/

@OrigamiRobot I think it just petered out because @Ktash went AFK. I'm sure it'll resurrect when he's back.
You can take up the We Don't Wanna Be Scifi.SE argument for me because I am going to go to sleeeeeep.
You can get bonus points for pointing out how we shouldn't be defining our scope to cater to the likes of Red Shirt Guy.

That was going to be my argument
7 hours ago, by OrigamiRobot
In regards to this, I really don't think it is constructive to ask why a plot specific character has distinctive features. Maybe if said features were actually relevant to the plot itself, but this doesn't seem to be the case. It's like asking "Why does Papa Smurf wear red pants instead of white?"
6 hours ago, by OrigamiRobot
Important characters frequently have distinctive cosmetic features. I can ask a million questions on the reasons for such features, but if it isn't relevant to the plot, it's just trivial clutter.

@OrigamiRobot That's not what Red Shirt Guy is.
You should click my link.

I wasn't responding to Red Shirt Guy, I am just a slow typist
Earlier I was trying to come up with analogies, but they were all from TV shows and I thought "Unfortunately, these would all be accepted on SciFi"

Hmm, now we just need to send someone to a BioWare conference so they can become Arqade Shirt Guy...
"Why does Harbinger not have a middle 'leg' like the Sovereign-class Reapers, even though it specifically was supposedly created in the image of the Leviathans, which appear to uniformly have this middle 'leg'?"

4:01 AM

Woot! Borderlands 2 for $36!

Plot questions should have a side question: "Does it matter in the story?". If the answer is no, then we have a Poke the Plot Hole question.

Q: What are Ice Towers useful for?

Ashley NunnThe description of Ice Towers states that they "freeze bloons in its burst radius for a short time. Frozen bloons are immune to sharp objects". @Aarthi Have you never seen The Big Duck?

i've seen the big cube. Oh! And The Bean.

No, Big Duck.
It's 20 feet tall.
But yeah, cannot wait until this Suffolk County shit is done. It's mind numbing out there.
@Aarthi Which big cube are we talkin' bout? The Apple Cube? Or the Alamo?
(Because as much as I love Apple, the Alamo will always be The One True Cube For Me.)

Yes?
I feel like the answer is yes.

Alamo, also known as the Astor Place Cube, or simply The Cube, is an outdoor sculpture by Bernard (Tony) Rosenthal, located on Astor Place, on the island of Manhattan in New York City. It takes the form of a black cube, long on each side, mounted on a corner. The cube is made of Cor-Ten steel and weighs about . The faces of the cube are not flat but have various indentations, protrusions, and ledges. The sculpture's name, Alamo is designated on a small plaque on one corner of the base and was selected by the artist's wife because its scale and mass reminded her of the Alamo Mission. In...
The Alamo is awesome because it gets regularly vandalized.

heh
How did "Bernard" become "Tony"?
that makes zero sense

@Aarthi That was a good article.

@LessPop_MoreFizz ermagerd
@fbueckert :D i'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm wondering why it was on Jezebel and not Joystiq Kotaku though

@Aarthi Yeah, no idea. His own bio doesn't explain it either, other than linking to a disambiguation page that indicates he may have been trying to avoid confusion.
@Aarthi Perhaps because Joystiq and Jezebel are not owned by the same publisher?

@LessPop_MoreFizz yeah i realized that -- Kotaku, my bad
@LessPop_MoreFizz ahahaha

4:24 AM
@Aarthi As for why it wasn't on Kotaku.... probably because Kotaku is a cesspool and part of the problem tbqh.

LessPop_MoreFizzThe appropriate solution is probably to create synonyms that reverse the acronyms. As we've seen, ratchet-and-clank-a-crack-in-time is far too long for the tag limit, so we use rnc-a-crack-in-time. I see no reason that we couldn't have a synonym of ratchet-and-clank-cit there to provide for bette...

oh
I don't really understand how synonyms work. I've always left that stuff to @badp.

@LessPop_MoreFizz The problem's you can create synonyms out of the blue
You need the tag to already exist. I think. Let's try

11:38 AM
yeah, you need to use the tag in a question first

Also, @LessPop_MoreFizz
is currently actually empty
I'm kinda confused here
ohhh. okay

@badp it's a trap, he's luring you into-- aaaaaaaaah death groan

without the a-

Yeah, I don't pretend to know anything about the rnc games other than having played the first one a decade ago, and the commentary regarding our current state of tagging in that meta post.

morning @LessPop_MoreFizz
3h45m
just sayin'

11:50 AM
TCO

total cost of ownership?

taken care of
anybody here who has smite by the way?

i have a beta key
i installed it and uninstalled it on the same day though without playing it

@pixel heh, crash on start? nda?

horrible primary colour icon for the game

11:53 AM
...
it's, like, blue and gold. What were you expecting

what, if a company cba with the icon used to launch the game then the rest of the game must be terrible

...
the game isn't finished yet

and maybe when it is finished the icon won't look horrible on my desktop

maybe you don't need the icon on your desktop anyway
you know, Start smite enter

maybe you guys need to stop being so gullible when it comes to my completely OTT reasons as to why I didn't play/do something
just... maybe
because I'm certainly not fickle enough to uninstall a game based on it's icon
it was all the other random crap utilities it installed with the game

11:55 AM
I prefer pulling your leg in the direction you throw it towards
(that uh analogy doesn't really work does it?)

I had every intention of playing the game, but then I went to bed, and when I woke up the next day I needed the hard disk space to download my little pony

@pixel both seasons, 1080p, are 22 GB
2002 called, they want their hard drive back

actually season 1 was 20.6gb by itself

@pixel I'm looking at another torrent with both seasons at 22 GB

shrug

11:58 AM
1080p is another way of saying HD, which probably means that other 20 GB torrent uses terrible encodes or something
do you even have a monitor with 1080 lines of pixels?

...
my desktop resolution is 5760x1080

oh, you do, good for you. <envy/>

and I'm not even sure a 2002 bios would detect that drive
