does anyone here play Final Fantasy XIV and also monitor their data usage?
am curious as to how much data it uses outside of patching
@Memor-X I'm not sure about FFXIV specifically, but when I did this for WoW, it generally was only a couple KB/s
Like, it was a negligibly small amount

Man, I had A LOT of fun yesterday saying my extended family again for my birthday party

I was playing FFXIV for majority of saturday. Outside of the patch later in the day, most usage seems to be only couple of kb/s indeed.
(tho that graph also includes rest of the home network, including us watching stuff during/after the patch, etc)
(also like, do note that sustained kb/s over many hours adds up to a lot)
@ave Suppose it's 5 KBps. That's 18 MB per hour. Suppose you're playing the game for 24 hours per day for an entire month, it's a little under 13 GB. I use more than that on a daily basis
And that's the ABSOLUTE worst case: using it every moment of the day for an entire month. You're much more likely to play 2-3 hours per day, at which point it's closer to a GB per month
assuming you play every day. If you only play every 2-3 days, it's like 300 MB per month
So what I'm saying is: if you are strapped for bandwidth, there are likely better ways to reduce your usage

@Nzall I guess this is my work-brain corrupting me ^^ We deal with infra that has severely limited traffic limits and the load is usually persistent over a whole month, so we have to think of all the small details.
07:40
@ave you're EXTREMELY unlikely to run FFXIV on a connection where the tiny throughput it takes is gonna matter
ave
ave
is this a challenge? ;p
I do have some data sims and 3g modems lying on my desk rigth now
@ave What is the datacap on those things?
ave
ave
but yeah no, ack your point
@Nzall depends on what i pay for. iirc it has 5GB rn?
I think you might even be able to play the game on a 2G modem
ave
ave
I think that'd make the angry germans that keep matching with me on duty finder with even more angry
07:43
2G has a max throughput of about 100 Kbps
ave
ave
can you actually get that much in practice tho
Maybe on 2G Edge
which AFAIK is the most common 2G network still in use
Goes to 0.3 Mbps theoretically, and 0.1 Mbps typical
ave
ave
going to try it out, fingers crossed
@ave be sure to also try out a trial or maybe even an Alliance Raid
Because I've found those are generally the highest demanding
ave
ave
oh I meant a speedtest
Actually I think-- what the heck
so I have an x on my network icon, speedtest.net can't even find a provider
but somehow slack notifs go through??

@ave yeh that's what i'm trying to work out in the end. we recently got NBN via Satellite but unlike the ADSL2 connection which is unlimited it's only 60GB On Peak a month (190GB off peak but that's only between 1am and 7am) so i'll be measuring how much data is taken up via the remote connection to work and depending on how much it has left and how much the game uses i might try out Final Fantasy XIV
ave
ave
@Memor-X yeah it seems doable
i still have the ADSL2 connection aswell so i can connect to it, get any patches before i log in and then switch router to the NBN to minimalize how much is taken from the 60GB
ave
ave
@Memor-X why'd you switch btw, out of curiosity?
Telstra messed up a couple of weeks ago which knocked out the internet and they blamed it on the router. their solution was to wait 3-4 business days for a new one from them but we got a new one ourselves to set it up and it was a no go and Telstra refused to progress tech support until their router arrived. it prevented me from doing work but i had plenty of leave i could use but my mum was getting angsty because she couldn't get onto ebay so she talked to my brother and he suggested getting Satellite not only "to be more reliable" but also apparently better tech support.
ave
ave
@Memor-X I see
how's the speeds, latency etc on sat?
09:16
@ave haven't really checked yet. only just started working today but i was still on the ADSL2 Connection. we have NBN25 and according the ISP's site "Typical evening speed 25Mbps download"
ave
ave
@Memor-X interesting.
If you do run such tests I'd love to see the results.
esp latency difference between adsl2 and sat
@ave sure, i'll provably run SpeedTest and some other sites tomorrow morning before work since i wont be downloading on Steam at the same time

So I had a party yesterday with my extended family (37 adults inc. me) for my 31st birthday (since 30th was delayed by a year). They asked me what gift I'd prefer, I said I'd prefer money for a new desk chair. I ended up getting 3X more than I thought I'd get, so I'm not just buying a new chair, I'm also buying a new monitor. For chair I'm considering the SecretLab Titan Evo XL, and for monitor the Samsung Odyssey G7. Any of you got any thoughts on either item?
15:15
idk secretlab always felt like 'buying the brand' for me
kinda like apple over android
but never actually tried their chairs
@Fredy31 I'd say it's a bit more than that. Secretlab has consistently scored at the top of the rankings in gaming chair reviews
Idk, on desk setup I bought a rising desk last week and god i love it
As in, if you google "best gaming chairs" and open everything on the first place, 1 of the search entries is SecretLabs themselves, 1 doesn't have them compete in the ranking, and the other 8 all have a Secretlab chair as the winner, and often even a second one somewhere down as well
so maybe i'm having the 'new gadget pink glasses' with my raising desk, but with money over, if you work from home, I would buy that raising desk
i guess that also depends how demolished your old chair is
and for monitors, well I'm in the camp of 'does it show images? if yes, then well, no need to change it'
16:01
Apparently Facebook is down
...and there was much rejoicing?
16:39
what i heard is that conspiracy theorists are screaming that they beat the demon that tries to censor them... facebook
but they cant post it in their facebook groups so they can't express their glee to anyone, because they spent the last year and a half pushing any person that has half a brain out of their lives
and I'll stop dunking here because this is not TIF

@Batophobia I'm doing my little happy dance
@badp Productivity in the world probably tripled in the last 2-3 hours
luckily for us we got Arqade to distract us. So our productivity hasn't budged

Q: Screenshot of the Week #49

WipqoznHello and welcome to the forty-ninth edition of the Screenshot of the Week! To start with, congratulations to the winner of the previous contest! pinckerman's submission of them admiring the horizon of a ringed planet in no-manys-sky with 13 upvotes! To submit a screenshot, simply post it as an ...

@SepiaLazers I originally created this an hour early and deleted it just so it be ready, so I wasn't sure if lazers would actually grab it. Good job buddy.
19:34
@Fredy31 Whew!
19:45
Weren't people calling the police last time Facebook went down?
19:57
well hear about that in a few days i guess
I know DNS problems are the fucking worst but really? we are going on to about 4-5 hours of outage rn?
guess even the best webdevs in the world have days where they can't seem to make shit work
@Fredy31 pretty sure no webdevs involved in solving this. This is almost certainly at a different level like BGP
20:23
@MadScientist it is
Apparently the authoritative DNS servers for Facebooks had all their routes deleted
so EVERY domain they own is down
From what I understand they essentially deleted themselves at the BGP level, which also removed all their DNS servers from the internet
In addition, the backup IRC client they had in case messenger went down was ALSO on their domain name, so that also went down. AND they can't enter their buildings because their badge system can't authenticate with their servers, because those are also down
@MadScientist yeah, that's what I meant: they were withdrawn from BGP
@Fredy31 that's my secret, cap. i'm never productive
@Nzall that seems to be a fucking big crash
like that is starting to seem like an actual attack and not a fuckup
@Fredy31 attack, OR a disgruntled employee. There are rumors that whoever updated the BGP records did so during the 60 minutes interview roughly 12 hours before it started
Which would be enough time for the records to drop
20:32
@Nzall would be crazy that FB doesnt have disgruntled employee protection
also how big was that employee if he can singlehandedly crash FB for 4-5h worldwide
and he was not checked on the way out
based on what i've heard from various people, the tech industry as a whole is a lot more vulnerable to disgruntled employees than you would expect
lol
I had an agency where I worked that used the same UN/PW for all sites
and didn't change it when an employee left
so yeah
but I would have tought that facebook was as crap :p
20:55
So... Just fucking imagine this IS an attack, by google to crash one of their competitors... AND THEY NOW ANNOUNCE GOOGLE PLUS IS BACK! WITH A STEEL CHAIR!
21:14
@Unionhawk Oh goddamnit
Well, guess that's a clue scroll I'll be dropping
21:26
lol
You do only need to start legends to get there but
wait you finished legends that's right
the magic logs are locked now
Yeah that step is particularly annoying for ironmen
you need two distinct items from hard clues
21:47
@Unionhawk Exactly, that's my problem

Q: Do support gems override or extend the "type" of attack skills

Marty CagasIt sounds intuitive that when linking a support gem to a skill gem, the support gem can in a way alter the type of the skill. For example, it makes sense that linking a Ballista Totem Support to a Galvanic Arrow will make the skill benefit from effects that increase totem damage. What's less intu...

Oh hey, Facebook is back
yeah :/

Ugh, crap
I got a Slayer Tower task, so I went to do the morytania diaries
But I have to get a new task as part of that -.-
23:58
Yep had that same issue trying to do mory medium, which task?
Apparently mory hard requires piety so that's the general next direction (also piety is good)
