Q: What are the differences between the War Mage and the Sorceress?

Mr SmoothFrom what I've noticed so far, there seems to be a few differences between the two playable characters in Orcs Must Die! 2. So far I've noticed that the War Mage has more health, while the Sorceress has more mana, and they both start with different weapons and traps. Do either of them have excl...

Q: What is the quickest and most reliable way to deal with kobolds?

Mr SmoothKobolds are a major problem in my trap setups. Not because they aren't killed by most traps, and not because they can make it to the rift very easily without player intervention, but because they set off all of my traps without actually being effected by them. This causes a problem where a kobol...

I don't think I've been this excited for a game in ages.
Scumbag Guild Wars 2. Not being out yet.

@Wipqozn I feel like a bad gamer, because I have like less-than-zero interest in it. :(

@RilgonArcsinh It also makes you a bad person.

@Wipqozn Well we all knew that, ask @LessPop_MoreFizz.

12:09 PM
Never cared about GW1. Don't care about GW2.

Now if we want to talk excited, I could wax poetic about Rift: Storm Legion or Torchlight 2...

@RilgonArcsinh Rift is releasing an expansion?

@Wipqozn Yup! I believe expected late 2012, or possibly maybe early 2013.

Maybe I shouldn't be playing DayZ in surround sound, it's making my more scared.

TBQH, next thing I will probably be excited about, barring another surprise like TSW, is the South Park RPG, because Obsidian.

12:12 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz It still gives me pause that you can legitimately say "Obsidian" and "South Park RPG" in the same thought now.

And I really don't need help being scared.

@RilgonArcsinh And it is exactly because of that that I am interested.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh don't get me wrong, I have a healthy degree of bemused curiosity as well, just stating the sheer head-tilt factor of the fact.

@RilgonArcsinh Nifty. I bought Rift at launch, but I only played it for a month or so.

@Wipqozn Wait until you get Alzheimer's, and you'll feel like it every week!

12:17 PM
@RilgonArcsinh Wait, South Park RPG?
I just woke up, and what is this?

@LessPop_MoreFizz GW2 is drastically different than GW1. So it's worth looking into if you want a new MMO.
Although I assume you're quite busy with TSW right now.

I just realised, if I don't get an answer to this I can't record.

@Koviko Yes. being developed by Obsidian of all places.
You know, the people that write super dialog heavy games like NWN2, Fallout:New Vegas, and Alpha Protocol

@LessPop_MoreFizz I knew that sounded familiar. That sounds amazing, then.
I liked NWN very much
Though I nvr played Fallout
I heard it was good.

> It was also revealed that the Xbox 360 version would feature Kinect integration, allowing the user to use voice control including the ability to berate Cartman.
Goddamnit, I knew somebody at some point would come up with a reason for me to want to get Kinect.

12:22 PM
@Wipqozn Too bad you missed the Return to Telara weekend last weekend, could've come and checked out a year's worth of awesome changes :P
@Koviko I'd ask @LessPop_MoreFizz first, I've only heard that it is, in fact, A Thing.

he wizard is Cartman. He asks for your name. You type it in.
"You entered 'Douchebag,'" Cartman says. "Correct?"
No matter what you say your name is, Cartman will call you Douchebag. This is the perfect way to bypass an annoying game design problem—voice acting player-entered names. Imagine if Final Fantasy X characters all just called Tidus "Douchebag." Instantly better game.

oh wait, he already answered, dumb work interrupting my chat time

@LessPop_MoreFizz Haha. This sounds amazing already.
And if won't look crappy
This could be great.
Ooh. I have a starred comment. I knew this day would come!
Victory!

@Koviko I don't know if Obsidian knows how to make non-great games

@RilgonArcsinh Let's hope.

12:24 PM
(bracing for anti-KOTOR2 comments in 3...)

There was a KOTOR2?
I never beat the first one.

@rilgon though it's true they know how to make deeply flawed great games. :(
Oh for what KOTOR 2 could've been.

Well, the first 50% of KotoR 2 were great, the last 50% didn't exist

@LessPop_MoreFizz I would assign blame for that more on rushed development schedules more than an intrinsic quality of Obsidian. (To wit, looking at you KOTOR2)

@rilgon I'd've agreed until alpha protocol.
Which is a great game, but has very evident flaws.
And went gold like 8 months before release.

12:26 PM
Fair, I'll concede that, at the least.

Some would argue f:NV as well, though I mostly blame Gamebryo there.

I haven't had a single issue with F:NV, but I also haven't played it very long yet.

Mask of the Betrayer is still the best thing they ever did though.

Not that I could pass it up at the price point it was up for during the Steam sale.

This is going to sound random, but did anyone else play Freelancer?

12:28 PM
Did you get the DLC?

Yeah, I bought the GotY edition since it was only 2.50 more.

Because Old World Blues is fucking MADE FOR YOU.

@Koviko Yeah, once I have all my necessary jobs mastered for Butz and Faris.
(objective complete: mandatory FFV reference)

@RilgonArcsinh ... wot?

@Koviko Never mind, it was a really dumb joke to begin with :)

12:31 PM
@RilgonArcsinh Old government weapons lab that's been taken over by a bunch of brains in jars obsessed with THE POWER OF SCIENCE

@LessPop_MoreFizz ...You do know saying something like that makes me want to play it instead of taking part of TSW free weekend, yes?

hello

@pixel Welcome back.

not really back - just here, momentarily - but thanks

@pixel Oh?
@pixel Also, finished 8/8 elites last night. Nightmare time is go, once I get home and kill Gatekeeper.

12:36 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz cool, haven't really played, still, should probably do that at some point but I got kinda bored of it

Q: Do villagers always sell first?

YamikuronueFrom the minecraft wiki, I can see that each villager begins with one trading offer which must be accepted before it can trade more offers. In my test world, every villager I've clicked on has offered to sell me things (as in, asking for emeralds in exchange for goods). They are capable of buying...

Q: Alternatives to the Blizzard Downloader as a means of downloading Starcraft 2?

Bruno PereiraLast time I tried installing the game using the download client it had uploaded more data than the one I received and took so much time to finish. Is there an (official) way of downloading Starcraft2 directly, or a sanctioned torrent instead of using their download client? or any alternative ...

@RonanForman I like accepts from the long-distant past

Oh. Hi @pixel. :)

@QAdley I occasionally forget to accept them.

@FAE:

12:44 PM
@Wipqozn Why can't I see? (DayZ by the way)

@RonanForman Is it night time?

@RonanForman Are you blind?

No everything is blurry and black and white.

@RonanForman Did you forget your glasses?

FAE
@RonanForman Is your blood really low?

12:45 PM
@RonanForman Glitch in the matrix?

@FAE How low is low? I'm at 2000.

FAE
@RonanForman That's low.
Max is 12,000. So that's why your vision is like that.

How do I fix this?
There are zombies out side and I can't see, so every time I kill one I get hurt and can't see more

FAE
@RonanForman Best way is to find someone to give you a blood transfusion.

@RonanForman Die.

12:47 PM
Will the zombies do it?

FAE
@Wipqozn This works too.

@Wipqozn That's not very nice.

@RonanForman @Wipqozn Not all solutions are necessarily nice.

@Koviko hey

But I have a hatchet, and some bullets, and a flashlight, I like these things.
Also some soda and a bandage.

FAE
12:48 PM
@RonanForman Don't get attached to your first couple characters or stuff.

That just makes it sound like first-person Nethack.

@ThomasMcDonald Server update plox

What does the broken chain thing mean?

One of my favourite Q scenes:

FAE
@RonanForman Your connection to the server's dodgy.

12:49 PM
@QAdley Do you see a new version of bukkit out?

@FAE Realism at it's best.

@FAE Don't get attached to any characters or any stuff.

@RonanForman Point

@FAE Oh okay, that's good.

Forgot it was bukkit
For some reason

1:00 PM
Why are there so many loading bars in this game?

1:15 PM
Good morning, Bridge

Damn zombies breaking through doors.
I had like 50 of them chasing me.

user2334

So Minecon has been announced.

@MarkTrapp mop.wowhead.com/zone=6125/mogushan-vaults for the first one
just from googling the first paragraph

user2334
Yeah… see the same copy from Wowpedia too

1:26 PM
@MarkTrapp googling each individual paragraph results in a perfect hit on another site

@MarkTrapp seems like they are all direct copies from Wowhead

user2334
oy oy oy

user2334
It's also vaguely incorrect now that Blizzard released their schedule, but that's neither here nor there

@MarkTrapp we do have rules against plagarism, right?

user2334
Yeah, it's delete on sight. Just flagged it

1:30 PM
@RonanForman I bet I can predict most of the costumes.

Where are those plagarism rules?

I threw a link to where it looks like it came from. Hopefully, he'll edit his answer to admit the source.

user2334
@tiddy I know them from when I was a moderator myself, but I was trying to find public mention of them on MSO and found this vague reference to moderator action

Moderators will delete on sight any post that is a straight copy lift, no excuses (attribution isn't always a viable excuse unless the source is the right creative commons release) — random Mar 20 '11 at 19:33
Don't know of any really official source
And in this case it also affects the contest

Q: Copy/Pasting Text, is this a problem?

Josh KI know a lot of answers (including some of my own) are just copy/pasted from an official website that has the answer (See This Question). Is this allowed or do copyright issues make this a bad thing to do? If it isn't allowed we should try to make it more clear to the users because I see this ...

@RonanForman DisneyLand!
Lol

user2334
@pixel That one's like most of the stuff on MSO: mentions plagiarism in passing, but all the answers focus on copyright infringement

@QAdley I might go, I can't decide, I'll have to wait for prices.

All those are just posts from users though

@MarkTrapp same deal in my mind, more specifically though this one has Oak saying "don't just blanket C+P and use attribution when you do copy excerpts"

1:39 PM
@tiddy as opposed to who?

@RonanForman I could go, potentially

user2334
@tiddy Robert Harvey's a moderator, random's a moderator; in Pixel's answer Oak is a moderator and Grace Note is an SE employee

@MarkTrapp while the answer in question is a straight copy and paste with no attribution

@pixel and provide attribution. That's important

I think the main rule is, "Don't be a dick." Which means you should properly credit your source.

1:40 PM
Do we have any meta posts about questions involving games in a beta stage?

@QAdley I mean it's close enough.

@fbueckert And don't just copy the whole thing, either. That takes pretty much no work

Paris is just a Eurostar away after all. Might be more than I'd be willing to spend to hang out with a load of teenagers for a weekend though (no offence)

I guess I still don't know what a moderator is

@murgatroid99 If your entire answer is a straight copy/paste, it's not a very good answer; you're not providing proper context.

1:41 PM
@tiddy someone elected by the community to have more powers on the site

user2334
@tiddy Someone who's been elected by the community (or in some cases, appointed by SE) to be the site's "rules lawyer", if you will. They're the ones who act on flags and mediate disputes

And dictate site policy
?

user2334
Enforce site policy

@tiddy There are no dictators

If so sounds great

1:42 PM
@tiddy Nope. That's community driven.

@tiddy we all determine site policy

Alrighty

user2334
Well, in legal matters like plagiarism and copyright infringement, SE dictates policy, but yeah, generally the community does

@tiddy Welcome to Democracy, where no one agrees on anything ever.

What is the site policy about asking questions on a game in beta?

1:42 PM
@Adanion Depends on the game, and the nature of the beta

@fbueckert The problem is that in that answer the first paragraph provides enough context to make the answer useful, but the rest is straight copy/paste

@Adanion Minecraft was one of the biggest tags on the site while the game was still in beta

Should the user be given a change, or should someone edit the answer to properly cite? Or are you deciding to completely trash the entire answer

@QAdley So Minecraft beta questions about things that can and will change are different from WoW beta questions that face the same problem?
That doesn't make any sense to me at all

user2334
@Adanion It's murky, and people are passionate about the issue. Generally if the game is widely available and people are playing it and asking real-world questions about it, its status as a beta doesn't matter.

1:43 PM
@Adanion I know nothing about WoW I'm afraid

@murgatroid99 Hmm. Missed that. My bad.

@Adanion avoid that conversation, you'll just get a headache...

@pixel Does that mean you've decided to stick around?

@tiddy as the earlier comment from random said, providing attribution isn't enough to make an answer copied entirely from another site good

I haven't decided anything

1:44 PM
@MarkTrapp I don't know if you saw my post on meta, but thank you for your answer. I stopped going to WoW Insider a while back and that battleground was confusing the crap out of me.

Part of the reason MC questions are often more acceptable is that there's often confirmation from the dev(s?) that certain stuff is there to stay, or that stuff won't be 'fixed'
Also, stuff changes in the released version all the time!

ah we entered that conversation anyway
runs for cover

user2334
@Adanion It's not that the answers will change; SE is designed to handle changing answers (e.g., frictionless editing). It's more whether people are asking questions that'll be useful in the future, and whether we're in a position to answer them. So generally we frown upon questions that ask about things that haven't been officially released yet

user2334
Minecraft is weird in that "official release" was more or less beta.

@MarkTrapp I don't know about others opinions, but I think that battleground question could help several people that are confused with it as well.

1:46 PM
Since GMail the beta label also doesn't mean anything anymore. The Minecraft beta and a closed beta of a game aren't really the same thing.

@MarkTrapp Nothing changed from 'alpha' to 'beta' to 'release' in terms of the attitude towards development
There has been an overaching slowing down of 'official' releases though
Basically MC is the exception that proves every rule

user2334
@Adanion de nada; I'm not really a fan of this contest, but of the four or five we've gotten so far, your question seemed to be the most interesting of the lot simply because was literally nothing available online prior to yesterday

We had questions about the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer and singleplayer demo. The multiplayer demo was basically a beta test, it just wasn't named that.

Wow. Emotional scenes at the Judo

@MarkTrapp I wasn't a fan of the contest either, just figured I would take a stab at it and see how the community reacted. Apparently the answer was, "Beta questions are okay about some games, but not these other games".

user2334
1:49 PM
@QAdley That's not exactly accurate: Notch had a blog post when beta was announced indicating a shift in development towards polish and bug fixes. The minor version updates were more akin to Blizzard's content patches, which we have no problem with

@MarkTrapp Spose, don't know much about Blizzard's approach.

@Adanion The purpose behind the rule is to avoid people asking questions which are unanswerable.
Where the information simply doesn't exist yet

user2334
@QAdley Blizzard has a real, honest-to-goodness beta cycle that's separate from mainline development. Things break, things get changed drastically, it's not widely available (~10% of the player base has access, which is still a lot, but it's not considered the main game), etc.

@MarkTrapp Ah ok.

user2334
Which isn't to say there aren't questions about beta content that's really stable, but there are still huge chunks of it that in very active development that they're still soliciting feedback on and are subject to change at any time

1:52 PM
@MarkTrapp I would posit that an "honest-to-goodness beta cycle" would listen to feedback and data from their testers, though. :P

@YiJiang I agree with closing unanswerable question 100%. But when a question is answerable at the time of posting what do we do then? With Minecraft it was "+1 good question!" With MoP it is "-1 Too Localized! Even though the information is out there the information could change!"

user2334
@RilgonArcsinh not sure if you're just being cynical, but Blizzard at least says they do that :P

If your question starts with 'Will...' it's a bad question.

@Adanion It might also have to do with the publisher.
When Mojang says something is being added next patch, it makes it in.

@MarkTrapp As someone who has contributed loads of data in both the Wrath and Cataclysm betas on Hunter performance only to see it ignored, I don't really buy it. ;)

1:53 PM
Blizzard might end up waiting a patch or more citing complications.
The policy against speculation exists because it leaves us open to having incorrect information as the answer to a question.

At the end of the day it is water under the bridge for me honestly. I just think we should decide if beta questions should be opened or closed. I don't think leaving this grey area based on what game it is makes much sense.

user2334
@RilgonArcsinh Yeah, believe me: I sent a lot of feedback regarding how… unfun Warlocks became in Cataclysm, but they still did it. However, in MoP, they've been a lot more receptive to Warlock feedback. I'm sure there's a ton of stuff they've ignored, but a fairly prominent drastic change they just made was completely redoing the Pandaria starting areas after a couple of months of player testing

@MarkTrapp I noticed that. It's still a bit buggy, but it's much more stable than it was and it looks very nice.
Also, less pandas.

@Koviko That problem exists with any game these days. Developers fix or change things on almost every game, regardless of it being a true "online" game or not. We probably have several Minecraft, Skyrim, League of Legends, etc questions that are now "Out of Date".

@Adanion the problem is that we don't necessarily want to make all beta questions have the same rules just because they are beta

1:57 PM
@Adanion Do you think that's a good thing? Because personally, I believe we should avoid it as much as we can.

@Adanion We are aware, MC in particular has a lot.

user2334
@Adanion Keep in mind your question hasn't been closed (it only has one close vote); the down votes are more people's impression on whether they think the question is useful, not whether it belongs. And of course, every down vote you got was countered by an up vote

user2334
We've only closed two MoP questions, one as a dupe and the other was reopened

@MarkTrapp Oh yeah, I really only don't buy it as it relates to Hunters. :P By all measure, MM is going to end up in a worse place in Mists than it was in Cataclysm, so... yeah.
@MarkTrapp (Not that it strictly matters to me, since I've quit until Blizzard drops the "we know better than you, even if we're wrong" attitude that they constantly present)

Just trying to wrap my head around the idea of one group of people deciding that these beta questions are fine and those beta questions are too localized I guess.
