@Fluttershy @EBongo @BenBrocka I got a second Emerald Dragon last night!! :D

@James still hate you
Didn't get a single one after half a month of breeding the same 4 stupid dragons. I really really don't like how the gemstone dragons are turning out
There's not much fun about breeding the same pair every day for a full month

@BenBrocka ಥ_ಥ
@BenBrocka I expect Pearl dragons to be available now.
They interestingly enough let you collect 12 gemstone dragons, so what are the chances they have one for each month? :)

@James probably not, no app update yet

Pearl have been mentioned in loading screens and such for aw hile
My bet is they are just month limited.

4:06 PM
Yeah, depends on whether the dragon's in the code yet though
no mention of them on the wiki yet
I also have to wait a full year for the Diamond dragon, my birth month, so that's extra lame

@BenBrocka Yeah I have to wait for Jan

Q: Are alternative Minecraft servers worth it?

fbreretoI have a Minecraft server running on an Amazon EC2 instance, and the instance is bogged down regularly by the server's high requirements. I recently came across a page listing alternative Minecraft servers, many of them touting the reduced overhead of their server versus the Mojang server. Howev...

@Wipqozn: My question is trying to acknowledge that there may be tradeoffs with using an alternative Minecraft server v. the Mojang one - features v. performance being the two primary issues. I wasn't asking for a line-item breakdown of all alternative servers listed; rather was pointing to that page as an example set of possibilities. I was hoping to hear back regarding specific servers and their advantages and disadvantages from people who have experience with them. I'm willing to refine my question along these lines; let me know. — fbrereto 8 mins ago
Not sure how I feel about that, so I'll just leave it here/.

@bwarner lol

@bwarner Thanks! I'm not really interested in anything beyond the graphics card for the gems. And I have the best chance I can get!

ugh, 25% chance is not instilling confidence.

5:13 PM
@fbueckert Looks like all 6 gems gives you about a 1 in 4 chance

I need to practice my "didn't win but I'm happy for you clap"

I reject your donuts and replace them with my pizza

claps with a wan smile

user15026
Now I want donuts but my only option is Tim Hortons. :(

@agent86 that smile is wan, try using a warm smile instead

5:15 PM
@bwarner I thought it gave you about a 25 in number of entrants chance (and at least 200 people have entered)

@murgatroid99 There are about 600 gems, and there will be 25 winners. So each gem is approximately 1 in 24. But once somebody wins, the rest of their gems don't count anymore.
So 6 gems comes out roughly to 1 in 4 (though I really haven't done the math)
Actually looks like we're up to almost 800 gems now
So I guess it is closer to 1 in 5.

@bwarner that only works if people earned 6 gems, but over 200 people earned perfect star, and that's a lot more than perfect ruby

@badp wan: showing or suggesting ill health, fatigue, unhappiness, etc.: a wan look; a wan smile.

@agent86 yeah, I suggest warm instead.

@badp negative!

5:18 PM
@agent86 well. okay. warm-looking.

@murgatroid99 Yah, but they all get thrown in the same pool. At least as far as I understand. So each gem is worth the same, regardless of how many people earned that particular one.

or waπ, people won't be able to see the difference on Verdana italic!

"Each Gem you unlock gets you one entry into a drawing for prizes."

@Sterno but does it do IRC?

@bwarner I think this is the way it works as well.

5:20 PM
@bwarner I know that. What I mean is that there are a lot more people total than assuming 6 gems per would indicate, so when someone wins less than 6 gems are removed
@bwarner the probability of winning is probably close to 25/(number of people), and number of people is at least 200

@murgatroid99 No, because that would assume everyone has the same number of gems. The few people with all 6 have a much better chance than those with only 2 or 3.

@murgatroid99 Either way, the contest motivated me to really participate. And I've learned a lot about how D3 works in the process!

A single gem would give you about a 3% chance of winning (not accounting for removal). So 6 gems should give you somewhere around 18% (though I know it doesn't quite work like that).

@bwarner that's true. It still matters how many people there are total, because that determines how many gems are removed from the pool when someone is chosen

@bwarner you sure? I thought it was less than that.

5:25 PM
Okay, my code is done! All I need to do is draw out every single letter!

@RavenDreamer What was less?
I know it ends up being less than 18%, because you can't just multiply probabilities like that.

@bwarner chance of winning per gem.
Yeah, I just calculated again with the current stats.
.5% chance to win, per gem.
1/196

@RavenDreamer No, that should be right. If there were a single winner, it would be 1/800=.00125%. But there are 25, so it is .99875^25 chance of NOT winning, or roughly 97%.
Again, not counting for removal.

Ah. Math error on my part.
I'm not quite sure what I did, but it was wrong.

I think everyone who got Act IV done should get a prize. ActIV was hard!

Q: Is it possible to estimate the odds of winning a multi-entry contest, when I don't know the breakdown of entries?

agent86Suppose I am entered into a contest, with the following rules: Every person may get up to 6 entries All the entries will be pooled, and no fewer than 25% of them, but no more than 25 will win I know how many entries I have (the maximum, 6) Each person can win a maximum of once, regardless of th...

Clearly still not as good as your 1 in 3 chance on the monitor. =)
@agent86 Heh

seems like the kind of thing that should be possible to compute

@agent86 I'm creating an account there just to upvote that question ;)

@Rachel getting to Act 4 is your prize!
I'd be glad if I manage to do act 3

@Rachel inorite? not that I have any particular incentive for wanting that to be the rule... :P

5:32 PM
@agent86 "no fewer than 25% AND no more than 25" is contradictory I think

@Rachel Everyone who got to Act 4 will get a prize. Its just that it might be a t-shirt.

@agent86 should just calculate it at 25 prizes, since that's what's going to happen.

@murgatroid99 Yah, should be no MORE than 25%. Although since we know the number of entries, it is really just 25.

@murgatroid99 mmm, both conditions must be satisfied, yeah? no fewer than 25% of the entries will be selected. also, no more than 25 total will be selected.

Just switch it to 25!
@Rachel Why, whatever do you mean? I hit that in 4 days! ;)

5:34 PM
@agent86 It isn't possible to satisfy both of those since 25 is fewer than 25%.

@agent86 I edited your rules to say "there are only 25 prizes", although I need someone to approve it first :)
@RavenDreamer Not me, I had to work to get Act IV! :) (actually, technically it was "stop working" to get ActIV)

@agent86 say n=200. No fewer than 25% means at least 50 and no more than 25 means at most 25. So (x>=50 and x<=25), which is impossible

> All the entries will be pooled, and at a minimum 25% of them, not to exceed 25 entries total, will win

So are all the upvotes from this chat?

is that better?

5:35 PM
Like Raven said, the 25% is meaningless since there are clearly 800 entries. It is just 25.

@agent86 how about "the minimum of 25% of the total and 25"

I figured since you gave specific numbers as to the entry counts, you might as well give a "max of 25 prizes" rule

@agent86 Just put it at 25. In any formula, the number of prizes is going to be a constant value.

sigh

Unless you want the formula for what would've happened if only 50 people had entered.

5:36 PM
Calculating the number of prizes is trivial - you're more concerned with the other bit, yeah?

If I have the math right, you have somewhere between .765% and 4.59% chance to win

mostly what I want is a nap, some liquor, and some chocolate. not in that order.

The .765% is based on if every other entry is a single entry, and 4.59 is if every other entrant has 6 entries

@Rachel 1 entry gives you a 3% chance to win, so you're doing something wrong.

@RavenDreamer Hrrm ok bad math :)
That's wrong anyways, sin cewe know that there aren't more than 42 people with 6 entries

5:39 PM
@RavenDreamer I thought that was with the assumption that nothing gets removed from the pool

user15026
@agent86 Enough chocolate flavoured liquor to make you want to nap, perhaps?

@murgatroid99 IT is, which means the actual chance is even higher than 3%

@murgatroid99 Right. So it's 3% +. Which is still more than Rachel's .75%

@RavenDreamer right

@AshleyNunn mmm, this is acceptable.

5:41 PM
@RavenDreamer 3% per entry is quite high
not saying that is wrong
just that that's a good chance

@Kappei Considering we started with 25% per entry ;P

I tried doing the math with removing 3 gems per winner, and it still comes out to about 18% chance of winning with 6 gems.

Where's the 3% coming from? That's not making sense to me :)

@Rachel See my post about a half screen up

If nothing changes, considering 6 entrants, how many monitors will be awarded for Act 4? 1 or 2?

5:44 PM
@Rachel 25 entries divided by the 768 individual entries.

@Kappei My understanding is 2.

I think they said "traditional rounding" which would mean 1 for 5 or 2 for 6
er. Wait.

@RavenDreamer But don't you have 6 entries of 768 entries? Not 25?

I have no idea.
@Rachel 25 prizes divided among 768 entries. 3% of a prize each, hence, 3% chance.

the only things I know at this point: I am bad at statistics.
2

5:46 PM
@RavenDreamer >.< My brain is fried

:4800448 It means there's a 3% chance someone with one entry will be a winner if other entries aren't removed after winning.

@RavenDreamer wait, I thought the 3% came from repeating the drawing 25 times

@Rachel You calculate multi-event probabilities like this by calculating the chances of the desired outcome NEVER happening, and then subtracting from 1.
@murgatroid99 Correct.

@murgatroid99 Ayup. Fixed.

So if there was one winner, a single gem would have 1/768, or about .1% chance of winning.
That means you have a 99.9% chance of losing. But if you do it 25 times, that ends up being a 97% chance of losing, or a 3% chance of winning.

5:49 PM
@bwarner 1/768 is closer to .1% (which is .001)

@murgatroid99 Oops, thats what I meant

Are we sure that gems aren't removed once their owner has been chosen? That would change the outcomes

@Kappei It's also an order of magnitude harder to predict and calculate.

@RavenDreamer yeah, I know

And yes, you can't win more than once, so your entries should be removed

5:54 PM
@RavenDreamer so it should be higher than 3%

@Kappei Yes.

It just doesn't make sense to me >.<
See this spreadsheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheet/…

how much higher? Hard to know without a degree in statistics.

@RavenDreamer and some hours of calculations

@Rachel There's 25 prizes, not 1.
There's your problem

6:00 PM
Later guys! Good luck with the contest!

So... assuming I have 6 tickets I have roughly a 20% chance to win? docs.google.com/spreadsheet/…
I have no clue if I did that math right, but that seems too high
No clue if you can add percentages like that too

@RonanForman I don't suppose you can use the unix banner command?

@Rachel Yeah that is incorrect

@tiddy I'm fairly sure it's wrong, but I'm not sure the right way to figure this out :)

Well if they remove a winner from the pot each time they draw
it would be 6/(784-n) n being round # after 1

6:07 PM
@tiddy but it depends on how many gems each winner has

I am not prentending to know how the contest works
Are gems a multiplier?

@murgatroid99 If only we knew how many distinct users were in the contest!

@tiddy 25 times they do the following: draw 1 gem; the owner of that gem wins; remove all gems owned by that winner
@RavenDreamer somebody must know that

@Rachel What's your act

there's also the fact that people with more gems are more likely to be picked (and have their gems removed from the pool)

6:10 PM
@tiddy I'm taking into account removing winning entries in the spreadsheet
@tiddy And I completed Act IV :D

@Rachel but the amount of removed entries at each drawing is unknown

@murgatroid99 I'm trying to figure out best-case (every one 6 entries) and worst case (everyone has 1 entry)

Am I reading this right? 25% of total winners PER act?

@Rachel best case is that 25 people have 6 gems, and you are one of them

The spreadsheet I'm looking at has a section for best case, and worst case

6:11 PM
and then only people with 6 gems are picked

@murgatroid99 Perhaps I should have said "best odds" and "worst odds"
not best/worst case :)

@Rachel oh, right, your case is equivalently the best case

So it's correct that you have roughly a 20% chance at winning?

@Rachel I actually think this might be right

Well best odds would be if every gem winner had the max gems
Definitely not the case

6:14 PM
@tiddy it could be possible

It isn't, looking at the gem winning numbers show it's pretty wide open

@tiddy what?

@murgatroid99 The gem distributions aren't uniform

@RavenDreamer but it could be the case that at least 25 people have 6 gems and that they all win
that's what matters for this calculation

@murgatroid99 I suppose it could.

6:17 PM
@RavenDreamer that is the best case scenario
the worst case is that each winner has 1 gem

On the prize page you can see the gem winners
But anyway rachel has less than a 1% chance of winning per drawing
As would any 6 gem winner
her odds on act 6 however, are pretty strong

@tiddy you can see who won which gems? where?

can't see who, just numbers
on the act page
Earned by: #

@tiddy I know that. What is your point?

in the best case scenario all the numbers would be the same

6:26 PM
@tiddy but only the number of gems owned by the people who win matters.

Its editable by anyone now, so you can edit B1 and B2 to view your chance at winning :)

Hm. Does it really only vary by 2%?
Still a 1 /5 shot for 6 gems

That spreadsheet is wrong
You don't sum the odds
It's a fallacy

@tiddy What do you do with them?

6:29 PM
@tiddy you do if the events are mutually exclusive, which they are

@Rachel Your answer is a bit misleading. The best case is possible, because even though only 42 folks have the perfect ruby, 42 > 25, so the best case would mean 25 people with 6 gems, which would seem to be possible.

I was checking in the math.se chat, and they said that was correct, although I do agree it might be misleading :)
@RavenDreamer You're correct, I'll update that :)

Indeed

6:47 PM
@Rachel Wow. I didn't think my chances were that good.

DaveI farm act one a lot with my friends, act 2 is slow going and takes forever to kill all the mobs that run, but my question is, do you guys get a lot more cash from doing Butcher runs than Skeleton king runs? We usually go back a quest or two so we get 5 stacks, lots of drops and gold pick ups. ...

I love the beginning of the month because then Nintendo releases new games on Club Nintendo. :D

Next question: How likely is an Act IV winner to win at least an Act II prize?
And final question: How likely is an Act IV winner to win either an Act II prize or the 6-gem raffle?

@RavenDreamer These are separate entries; no intersections.

@RavenDreamer I've used more time than I should have away from work figuring out gem odds :)

@fbueckert This is true. However you can still calculate the probability that someone will win anything other than a T-Shirt.

@RavenDreamer The other drawings should be simpler since everyone only gets 1 ticket. Just divide 1/#Entries to figure out odds for individual drawings
Then um... add them together :)

Why am I convinced you can't simply add them together?

@RavenDreamer because anyone who wins gets their tickets removed from all lower levels?
that should still be pretty simple though, since the total number of tickets removed by winners at each level is constant

Q: When can I get Covetous Shen's conversations for the Everybody Loves Shen achievement?

skovacs1The achievement says to "Listen to all of the Jeweler's conversations." Because Shen's conversations seem to change quite frequently, it seems like it would be easy to miss a lot of these, so I'd like to know when Shen's conversations first become available and if and when they become unavailable.

That just made Act 2 a lot easier, even with it's crappy DPS. Only was 200k on the AH!

@RavenDreamer I'm convinced you can't just add them together too also, but I don't know what you're supposed to do with them lol

Q: Huble Boundle - Amnesia does'nt start

jamesI have a problem with amnesia game. After Intro and clicking continue button few times, when game is supposed to start it crashes. Here is console output: ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear ALSA...

@RavenDreamer I think it's something like P(winning act 4)=1/4, P(winning act 3)=P(not winning act 4)*(1/4), etc (as long as none of them have over 100 entrants. Then the last number changes a little)

@agent86 (CC: @rachel ) the latest edit on your cross validated needs to be rolled back.

P(winning act 1)=P(not winning act 4)*P(not winning act 3)*P(not winning act 2)*25/(number of entrants-(number of act 4 winners)-(number of act 3 winners)-(number of act 2 winners))

@RavenDreamer I already submitted an edit to clarify the rules

except that everyone gets the shirt anyway, so that doesn't matter

Q: Why do some Salarians have a handle on their chest?

DavRob60Salarians are one of the council species in Mass-Effect. Some of them have some kind of bottle opener shaped handle on theirs chest: This feature doesn't seem motivated by any biological appendages: Does it have any purpose, or is it just decoration?

crap

@DavRob60 The answer is an aethestic one - it's to give the Salarians a more distincitve appearance. There's no deeper meaning. It's there so you can more recognizably identify a Salarian as Salarian.

@Beofett Yay!! Much needed :)

@RavenDreamer any quote to back this?

@Rachel Indeed! I'm even more excited to try out some of the CC pet builds I've been reading about once I can get loaded up on freeze/stun/blind/immobilize-on-hit gear

@DavRob60 It's not a quote. It's a principle of design. It's also the best answer you're likely to get. There's a reason these kinds of questions aren't allowed on Gaming.

Q: When can I get The Stranger/Tyreal conversations for the It's Just Us achievement?

skovacs1I just realized the achievement title was a pun on "Justice." The achievement says to "Listen to all of the Tyrael's conversations." Because Tyrael is always running off and disappearing, making it hard to talk to him, it seems like it would be easy to miss a lot of these, so I'd like to know wh...

Q: How does Download Later work?

Ashley NunnI bought a few games on the eshop today, and selected a few demos. I set them all to Download Later, and then I closed the lid of my 3DS. I figured that would work, as Download Later requires the 3DS to be in sleep mode - but 20 minutes later, all of the games and demos still are at 0% downloaded...

Q: Can I find out how many Dragons I have killed?

Jon WI can access the stats and see how many dragon souls I have collected, but I've been killing dragons all over the place, sometimes ones I've already beaten that therefore don't give off a soul. Is there another statistic that I have missed that will tell me how many I've dispatched, or should I...

@DavRob60 It's also the real reason for your quarian question: You can't see through the quarian's masks because the model beneath is not textured. And it's not textured because there's no reason for it to be (as all quarians in ME1 always had helmets). (The corollary there is that it then became a bit of an in-game joke, so in future games they could have done so, but did not)
