My plan for the upcoming revision is to simultaneously address some of the worst flaws with my writing while accepting that there is a particular type of novel I can write and that it won't appeal to everybody. I'm not putting together a Wheel of Time or Realm of the Elderlings.

While there is a LN and Manga, I watch the anime, see all the cool stuff unfold, and then, if I find something interesting, I go and research on it

But there is one thing those series do really well which is have really interesting, unique characters and a really good buildup of growing power level throughout the series.

And those are two things that I personally find really compelling in those shows, and a feeling I'd like to try to emulate in some of my own creative writing (not necessarily this novel, but at some point).

It has some kind of growing power, but it is mostly like "This is how it will be overpowered this time"

One thing it has going for it is that there is an actual reasonable number of episodes :)

New episodes each tuesday

The first season basically teaches you about the world, the second is more like a "How we will fit this world"

I personally like some animes where the MC is overpowered without ass-pulling, you know?

But it is rare to see one that can use such premise without making the story bland

@SaintWacko Well, the zany characters served two purposes. One, it's to highlight how different incredibly rich people are. Two, the fact that Nick's relatives were all messed up emphasized that he had to be the one to inherit the family business.

Because his relatives would definitely run it into the ground.

@SaintWacko Well, her friend was the obvious comic relief character and they're always zany.

Over-exaggerated personalities do feature in a lot of Asian media (TV as well as films) but my experience has been that they're somewhat part and parcel to the romcom genre as a whole.

Also, maybe it's a different vibe for Western audiences, but family (dis)approval of your significant other is a Big Thing in Eastern culture.

Like, it's a Big Thing.

I know familial disapproval isn't unknown to Western audiences. It's a common conflict in a lot of romcoms.

But while one of the "correct" solutions in Western romcoms is for the two involved characters to run off into the sunset and find happiness with each other, that is emphatically not true for Eastern romcoms. Attitudes are changing as cultures mix, but even now it's considered admirable for a character to put aside love and end a relationship for the sake of the family.

Granted, that rarely happens to main characters. It's often a side plot for a side character, but the one who breaks off the relationship is rarely characterized as having made the wrong choice.

In fact, side characters who do elope are often characterized as flighty, unreliable, and not be trusted.

Although now I remember that such characterizations do exist in Western media as well.

Javascript has some weird thing where certain numbers default to octal instead of decimal
