I suppose that's true
Oak
We just need to make sure we filter out noise, even if it's related to a popular new game.
I'd prefer if we were able to attract the real Hardcore gamers
2
yeah, that's what SE is all about, but hard to accomplish in gaming
The people with huge spreadsheets to figure out the best damage in Puzzle Quest, or who know the secret hard container on Megaman 7 in the Jungle Zone
we will, we will...
Oak
22:03
@tzenes oh yea, those are the best
very, as gamers are a fractious lot
Oak
I still remember the excels I got of Diablo 2... those were huge
I had spreadsheets for trading in EvE Online, does that count?
Oh man, you should have seen the ones I did for WoW
back in the WotLK beta
Eve... sigh...
22:04
when every 2 days they changed
1337 gamers @tzenes?
and I had to update
Oak
But what is the best way to get them? Do we need quality answers first, or high traffic first? I'd say we need both, and that's a difficult balance to achieve.
HardcoreGamers
I don't like 1337
we need publication definitely
22:04
@Oak Quality Questions, not answers
good questions make a good SE, not good answers
g4m3r2!1
we should use their content to create new, 'better' answers @oak
that way they will pop up in the search results, because they ARE good
Good questions will get the search results
we need to get our foot in the door
and its the questions that'll do that
Oak
@tzenes agreed, questions are the important thing
I have to say: what's are the best rotations for a level 80 Warlock? isn't a bad question title
22:06
yup
That's a great title
because best is well defined
but the question should also provide what the user has tried himself
Highest DPS or Easiest to Learn
but questions will need to be answered, otherwise we're just another Q&nothing fail.
where are you going to use it? what items do you have? what spec do you want?
I think the Q&nothings fail because they have bad questions, not a lack of answers
go on there they have tons of answers
22:07
and those answers should just be CW, so everyone can pitch in and get just a couple of really good answers
I disagree Ivo
staticically Highest DPS or staticically Easiest to Learn!
for that question its a well defined formula
I don't think thats a CW
Even if there isn't 1 answer, a good answer would be : Here are the 3 most popular for high dps
no need for CW, unless they want to!
or in your case: Here is the one for Demo, here is the one for Afflic, etc
Look at the question about Zerg builds I answered
I posted 6 different builds, explained them and illustrated their strengths and weaknesses
22:09
kekeke
I REALLY like zerg
Hello
Who are you?
well if you put in the effort and create the best item out of the box @tzenes: it doesn't have to be CW
but often I see room for improvement in other people's answers
22:10
haha
that's what comments are for IMO
being like: you forgot X and Y
they have their limits
I don't see the usefulness for CW anywhere
people often post me too answers with useful stuff in it
and if the list is like: you forgot A,B,C,D,E, then it should really be a new answer
@Chacha102 I am:
22:11
*two
oooooor just one really good one :P
then again, I can edit any question, so I might be biased
its a shame you can't select 2 answers as correct
like the raiding compendium I've seen on EJ.com
man I'm so addicted to those articles
22:12
The raiding compendium used to be 1 post
though our format doesn't really support them
I know
one for each class
someone collected it from all the other threads and maintained it
oh... NOES!
there's a feature request for linked to sub headers in an answer, that would helping making really long answers
there was ownership there
22:12
that's what I would be after here as well
I don't care about the rep, I care about the quality
Subheaders would be nice, instead of making 1 answer into 4
if 1 person would be appointed as the [X]-expert and would 'moderate' those answers, that would improve the quality a lot!

Q: Pros and Cons of the Starcraft 2 Races

dbemerlinHow would you describe the Pros and Cons of the different Races in Starcraft 2? I.e. which Race has stronger Air-to-Air Units? Which can adapt faster to enemy tactics? Which has the strongest Defense? etc. CW as this Question is obviously subjective.

see how I broke it into 4 answers to be more managable?
that sucks
btw: CW for main post, linking to each question for each class.
an Expert level might be useful, being a mod on those questions
22:14
that could work @alexanderpas
I also find it useful gathering info in one place
because reading A LOT of info will make sure you learn it yourself as well!
so it's not like im wasting my time
Well being able to have "tables of contents" for certain things would be nice
table of contents can be CW Questions, where the question is an explanation what can be found here, and the accepted answer is the actual TOC pointing to other (non-CW) questions.
I'm not 100% on this name just yet, but here is what I'm thinking:
-1
A: Suggest a domain name for this site

tzenesI really don't think most of these get to what the point of this site is. We are the Hardcore Gamers who know the minor details of games. We know where to find the hidden energy container in Megaman 7 in the Jungle Zone. We know the optimal build for a Barbarian in Diablo 2 to maximize dps. ...

Naturally, there need to be enough questions answered(!) before a TOC is warranted.
22:19
no
doesn't seem to be used
I'm checking right now
even if it was, hardcoregaming isn't
but something along those lines
meh, I still prefer quicksave
I don't like 1337, but I think Hardcore is pretty ubiquitous
22:20
it keeps amazing me how nobody but @Macha responded to my question other than upvoting it
yeah for sex :P
quicksave is cool, but it doesn't really seem relavent
I can post I agree, but that's all I have to add

Q: How can I run Dwarf Fortress in text mode on my Linux VPS

MachaI installed Dwarf Fortress on my Linux VPS to use with dfterm. It's running Ubuntu 10.04. I'm fairly certain I have all the dependencies: I've installed: ncurses ncursesw libsdl libsdl-image libgtk libglu libopenal1 I had to turn sound off or it will instantly segfault, and I set the display...

Good, bad, somewhere else?
well you probably don't agree ALL list questions should die ;-)
so if there's a fine line, where is it?
I actually disagree and I'll post about it later
22:22
I do, kill them all :)
@Macha isn't DFTerm an .exe?
my opinion is: "all list questions should be closed unless they pass these strict guidelines."
I just disagree about game-rec
@tzenes It's distributed as source for Linux.
there is no amount of strict that is strict enough to prevent bad ones
22:23
but what about those casual gamers who have problems with Wii Sports Resort? I think this might alianate(sp?) some of our potential userbase (question askers.) =0 vote.
@tzenes But I haven't gotten to that point.
well, as interesting as this conversation is, I think I'll dedicate some time to its namesake :)
"not using an emulator" is that already needed now...
@Macha did you look at the source? does it compile to a .so?
better question, does it compile to a .dll?
actually, why am I asking you, its on git
@tzenes dfterm compiles to an exe.
@tzenes Still an exectuable on Linux
@tzenes Sorry, not a literal exe
@tzenes An executable file. Typical. 3 years of Linux and I still call executables EXEs
no, I mean I'm reading this guys website
But Dwarf Fortress itself doesn't run, never mind dfterm
he says windows
ah
DF on linux, good luck
Scroll down
DF on my desktop works fine (even text mode)
22:28
wow... dfterm2 looks nice (now, who builds a visualizer that uses DFterm as backend ;))
where are you seeing linux?
well @tzenes it's community wiki, so feel free to change it if you think we can adapt it. But to me a lot of game-rec questions are also just lists, that have to follow our basic rules
Oops, page 1
"- Linux version supports any DF version that has TEXT available for PRINT_MODE. Or any other terminal program that the built-in minimal terminal emulator can handle. (tested irssi, NetHack and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup)."
"Linux users: compile the source yourselves. There's build_instructions.txt inside that may or may not be up to date. I can't guarantee the code always compiles or that there are no temporary showstoppers in the code."
dfterm has compiled. It's the df binary that's causing problems.
... as usual.
Fair enough @Macha
@Ivo I just think that any game-rec encourages game-rec, so we have to nuk them all
22:31
Ironically, it runs fine on my Arch Linux x64 system - the opposite to usual.
... as usual with DF
ah in that case, you can put that in as a clause
Dang, I must've missed the notice that chat was reopened. :P
I know that feeling.

Our “third place”, after a successful three day beta preview, is now on the final path to launch.

What is this mythical third place I speak of?

Because you not only need a place to have intelligent Q&A about managing your finances, you need a place to talk about the place, and a less formal “third place” to collaborate in real time with the fellow members of your community.

This is a permanent public beta, meaning chat is now live on one site in our network … forever. We plan to roll out out chat on more sites in about 4 weeks, assuming the public beta goes reasonably well. …

no magic link?
sad panda!
22:42
put that up as a feature request ;)
lovely video in that blog post
sigh... the only place i can go while utterly bored, and spend three hours without noticing are the (M)SO/SF/SU/SE sites. (and lose the bored status in the meantime.)
23:04
Uh oh Raven, we're tied. Quick somebody upvote one of his questions so he's back on top
you managed to get 495 rep only from this one:

A: What build order should I use for Zerg in StarCraft 2?

tzenesAn opening dictates how you are going to start the match. The basic Zerg openings: 10 Pool (Rush) 13 Pool (Standard) 14 Pool, 16 Hatch (Macro) 14 Hatch, 15 Pool (Macro+) 13 Gas, 13 Pool (NeoZerg) 12 Pool (Sen Style) How to read these: The number indicates the number of drones you should buil...

night night everyone
CU
I'm off too.
23:31
any questions that need close votes?
closed the two with 4
this one really needs be closed
@alexanderpas actually that one hit the rep cap more than once

Q: How can I make a backup copy of my Wii games?

splattered bitsI have two small children. No matter how careful I am, they always seem to get their hands on my Wii game discs and scratch them so I can't play them any more. Is there a way I can backup/copy my games so that I'm protected when this happens? It would seem like I should be able to make a byte-...

I'm out of votes for a few minutes

and mckay's answer is useless
it might be useful as a comment, but not an answer
23:37
I'm out of close votes
I wouldn't say its useless so much as inaccurate
the accurate answer would be that it is difficult as well as illegal
but there is a legal way
I'm going to write up a proper answer
is there?
That interface is nice. :)
IMO it looks better than the "channels".
aand they close it
please help me reopen because it has a legal answer and it's pretty much on-topic
23:45
what's the asnwer?
:58524 <-
this seems sketch
the lifehacker thing
as in not legal
it's allowed under the DMCA exemption
23:47
which exemption?
the one for backups
looking it up now
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (commonly known as digital rights management or DRM) that control access to copyrighted works. It also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself. In addition, the DMCA heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet. P...
that's a wikipedia page
purpose of good faith testing for, investigating, or correcting security flaws or vulnerabilities, if:
that is the only exemption governing video games
hmm
you seem to be right
I can't find it
