The rooms are filled with enemies, you kill them, not a huge deal

Anyone you leave off the elevator returns to the Avenger

Once you're in the final room though, urgh. You have to kill the Chosen, destroy their obnoxiously high-hit point sarcophagus, then kill the Chosen again

...While random enemies spawn

Of course the Hunter in my case had the ability to summon priests and apparently was able to summon two at once so they mind-controlled half my squad and I died before I could kill him the last time |:

If you fail to kill them you a) Can't try again b) They appear on the final mission
