I mean logically they would because anything Microsoft designs web wise should be tested in multiple browsers

but that's like 6 years ago by now, so I can't really remember

@BlueBarren If there's one thing I've learned working at Google, it's that tech people are going to use the product they like the best regardless of whether their company made it.

@Beedrill unless you force them to use something else (like Chrome being blocked at my workplace)

There is no loyalty.
I happen to prefer Google products, but I did before I worked here too.
@BlueBarren ew

@Beedrill quick show them your independence, use Edge
it'll really throw them for a loop

1:02 PM
My workstation is not Windows so that might be an issue.
I do have Firefox installed, though. I don't use it regularly, but once in a while there's a reason.

@BlueBarren Even if you personally only use Chrome, you should also use other browsers during web development to see how they render

@Beedrill Install windows just to use Edge so every time you want to browse the web you have to boot into windows
totally worth it

@BlueBarren I'm curious: how intertwined is Edge into Windows? Could you, say, extract it and use it in Linux through Wine?

@Nzall you would hope so and probably assume so but if you actually looked I'd say no
If I recall correctly with IE it was super hard to uninstall because of how integrated they wanted it to be
and I don't think it ever fully uninstalls

I think IE actually used to literally be an extension of their local file explorer.

1:11 PM
Other way around. It was originally a hacked-together fork of Mosaic. Later versions were callable as a library from explorer.exe and used to render parts of the file explorer and, in some cases, the desktop

I think maybe I should start unpacking these

You could probably take, say, IE6 and run it in wine, but you couldn't remove it from a windows system because then a bunch of other stuff would break.

@ToxicFrog Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I knew they were tightly integrated but not the direction.

@Beedrill well apparently IE and Edge are the only browsers that have direct access to file explorer or something like that. Apparently it's a big security flaw.

@Nzall uwp doesn't run on wine

VemonusA few times now, when grinding out levels against Terrors, I've been attacked with Venin Claws, which inflict some sort of poison if the attack connects. Or 64bit
But tbf most stuff doesn't run on 64 only

People are weird.
Leave for work this morning, and my lawnmower is missing.
My busted, old junk lawnmower.

@Frank huh? Where was it supposed to be?

But the brand new weed wacker on top of it was put off to the side.
@BlueBarren In my garage.

so someone broke into your garage?

1:28 PM
@Frank ha, ha, ha, that is weird

Its not locked, but getting the lawnmower out while my car is in it is super hard.
It takes lots of levering and effort to get it out the door.

uh why don't you lock your garage?

No lock on it.

clearly someone really needed to mow their lawn

1:29 PM
Haven't had a problem with things walking away for almost a decade.

okay so is your garage attached to your house?

Even the bikes are still there.
Nope. Detached.

ah
okay less concerning now

Yeah. Its just strange. It was probably the thing that would take the most effort to take.

@Frank for the least value too

1:31 PM
So it's a junk lawnmower but does it actually work?

@BlueBarren barely.

So a successful robbery I guess?
I would still be concerned about access being available to your garage @Frank just because someone knows they can get in, knows what you have in there and is willing to steal stuff

I almost feel sorry for the poor sod that tries to start that mower. Hasn't been started since fall. Last spring I threw my shoulder out trying.

So they might come back if they need a bike or a weed-wacker
or whatever else you have

If they were really trying to steal stuff, they'd've taken everything else, too.

1:35 PM
Clearly it's utilitarian so they only want to steal when they need something

Sounds more like kids playing a prank or something.

If it were kids playing a prank they wouldn't have gone for the mower

If it wasn't, there'd be a lot less stuff in the garage.

Oh yeah I was supposed to tell you that @Wipqozn was stopping by to borrow your lawnmower

Well. That solves that. Give it back when you're done, @Wipqozn.

1:38 PM
It was a crime of opportunity, while we know the mower is mostly junk, they did not, and the mower was in the way of taking (most) everything else. It'll be easier to walk away with a bike next time, and they know they can.

@TrentHawkins Got a camera nearby? or maybe one of your neighbors?

Good thing we're moving soon.
But probably a good idea to ask around, see if anyone noticed a lawnmower.

I just noticed that issue 666 in our planning is one I did this month \o/

@GnomeSlice foobar2000 can play directly from archives
the only time I unpack zips and rar's of music is when I need it on my phone

@Frank and to get a hasp and padlock for the garage.

1:45 PM
@TrentHawkins Man, nine years without problems, and then this happens. People suck.

(And don't get a Masterlock. They suck. I need to research good padlocks)

@TrentHawkins Huh, so that's what those are called.

I'm pretty sure that's not going to do what I want it to do...

@TrentHawkins For determined thieves, no padlock's going to be good enough. You just need something not built by an idiot to deter kids and stuff.

1:52 PM
My project manager just gave me a fidget cube. Now I can be cool like all you hip kids
6

@Sterno Cube?

@Frank @TrentHawkins said it was okay
@Sterno yaaaaaay you're young again!

@Sterno cube you say? The hip trend is spinners. Come on Sterno

@Yuuki No lock is going to stand up to a determined thief. But I've been watching a ton of lockpicking videos (the inner workings of locks is fascinating) and Masterlocks tend to have no security at all.

@TrentHawkins Oh yeah, definitely don't get a Masterlock.

1:55 PM
I'm only like 2 minutes into trying it out but honestly if I wanted to fidget so far a clicky pen seems better

But also don't tear your hair out or spend too much money on a fancy lock that's really only going to deter teenagers.

I played with a fidget spinner for like 30 seconds and it was neat because of the moment of inertia thing when I tried to turn it on a different axis while spinning. Then I was bored.

@Sterno how retro, another hidden gem from the #Sternold generation

Also, get a weather resistant lock if it's going to be outside. The lock I bought a year ago didn't really make it through the winter before it started seizing up.

@Sterno Clicky pens are great because you can do so much more than just click them. You can wiggle them between your fingers. You can tap things with them. You can play with the clip.
You can also write stuff, I guess.

1:57 PM
@Beedrill Who writes things anymore?

What's writing?
I know what typing is

I use pens to write notes I'll never look at again

Do you also write those notes in hieroglyphs?

I actually enjoy the act of writing things on paper, but I prefer pencils.

What I never understood/stand is people who write math with pen

2:00 PM
@Chippies my phone can't. also i hate foobar

@GnomeSlice that's a strong feeling towards a media player

user15026
@GodEmperorDune this was awesome. Thanks for sharing.

user15026
@Avery that's fine but you kinda gotta remember that if you say stuff like that people are likely to ask why, and if you don't want to actually talk about it, you shouldn't post about it here. In general, remember everything here is searchable, and public. So if you don't want it discussed or mentioned, we aren't the best people to talk about it with or around.

@Ash I like to imagine he's firing his lazers.

@Ash it helps to say it out loud (that some people suck) and it provides paper trail on when stuff happened if I ever need it. Thanks for your concerns, however.

2:14 PM
@frank screw it; Masterlock if you've gotta, I guess it's all most places around here sell.

Hmm. Just realized what I don't like about the ship name Infinity. Feels boring compared to the more elaborate names like Forward Unto Dawn, Pillar of Autumn, Spirit of Fire, and Dawn Under Heaven.

@TrentHawkins order a custom built uranium lock from New Zealand

@TrentHawkins Better than nothing, anyways.

user15026
@Avery Fair enough, just figured a reminder wouldn't be a bad idea. I know we're all friends here, but I also know about having stuff you'd rather not have poked with a stick. So knowing when not to potentially cause yourself more harm by posting it here is also a good skill.

@BlueBarren I can source good padlocks online, but between shipping time/cost, and the price of the good locks: The wood on the door/frame is probably rotten to the point that if you get an expensive enough lock, the door is going to be the failure point.

2:20 PM
@TrentHawkins something something weakest link

@TrentHawkins unless you're specifically targeted, I would say that anything that even remotely looks like a padlock will be sufficient
they will just go to the next house where there is no lock
although you are more likely to be targeted since you didn't have a lock before and someone knows what you have in the shed
the question is though - are they willing to fuss with it over whatever's in the shed

@Chippies right. I'd prefer something that won't unlock it's self if you look at it the wrong way, but a minor visible deterrent is better than none.

maybe it was some teenager who needed money, so he figured he'd mow lawns, but had no lawnmower, so he took yours and after he's done with it, he might bring it back

positive thinking! :P

2:22 PM
@TrentHawkins Which it will be, anyways, if someone wants to get into it bad enough.
At best, it adds to the barrier to entry.

@Frank question though; I know I've said padlock and hasp... But would that work out? You'd need to exit your car to re-lock the garage - and then if it's locked when you get home...
Problem is the door is so... off-kilter? that I don't think a deadbolt would work.

What we really need is a new door.
One we can lock from the inside.

Matth3w 23Quite simply, where is cloth obtained from in A Dark Room, and if there is more than one place, is any of them faster? I have only been able to find that it is obtainable from traps, which seem quite slow at the moment (I have just built the workshop).

@Frank we can put a deadbolt on the existing door - but the wood on the frame is kinda rotten, and the garage leans, so... very little guarantee any deadbolt (new door or not) would stay aligned for long.

@TrentHawkins I'm not sure what other options we have. Latch on the inside for when I go to work?

2:31 PM
> That's why I design all my web pages with S-Expressions and my Lisp server converts them to HTML on the fly. It works great unless I ever need to hire a designer who wants to work with raw HTML and CSS, and then I'll be slightly hosed.

Why does Reddit hate those "surprise return of relative in military" posts? Personally I find them really sweet

Favourite comment I've seen so far in reply to hipster HN comments about how HTML should just be replaced with Lisp expressions

They argue people are just trying to garner attention but that's literally everything on the internet

@BlueBarren I think like everything else there's too many of them

@Frank d'you have a spare garage door opener? because if I need access to a bike / whatever else while you're at work, we have the opposite problem.

2:33 PM
reddit thrives on novelty

@PrivatePansy this is how e.g. Hiccup actually works, and it's great

(cue reply about how reddit is where memes go to die)

@PrivatePansy okay so say there's an over saturation so you find the posts boring but that doesn't mean you have to hate them like a lot of people seem to.

@TrentHawkins It got burnt up. We can see if we can get a replacement.

@TrentHawkins don't forget about @Wipqozn, he might need to borrow the mower again.

2:35 PM
Well, ok, it's awful, as is everything to do with the browser, but it's dramatically less awful than either direct HTML/CSS or Django templating.

after he returns it of course because we all know like a good neighbour @Wipqozn is there

@BlueBarren He's a turtle, he can just make do with slowly eating the grass.

@BlueBarren Arguing from a devils advocate PoV (I've long unsubbed from r/pics, which is where I presume you're seeing this), the problem with posts like that (pictures of dogs getting adopted, cancer survivors, etc.) is that the images themselves are ordinary. It's the context that makes it 'interesting'

Reddit is essentially a giant fidget spinner distraction.

@TrentHawkins then why did he borrow the mower in the first place?

2:39 PM
That creates two problems - 1. the stories are not unique. There's a million dogs getting adopted every day. What makes "your" picture so interesting? 2. It's so easy to make shit up. Just spin a story, find a picture on the internet and slap the two together

@BlueBarren It's elementary, dear Watson. He is @Wipqozn, and @Wipqozn is the worst.

@PrivatePansy (not r/pics but r/gifs but yeah) What's wrong with ordinary? And how does something like a relative returning from deployment not give you enough context?

@BlueBarren The problem is basically that the image itself is not interesting, but the story. In which case a sub that's suppose to be about interesting images basically becomes a sub about boring images with interesting titles.

@TrentHawkins My name is @BlueBarren not Watson... so this is a little awkward. But I just compared @Wipqozn to a good neighbour. (I'm trying to be funny here but I don't really think any of this is coming off as funny)

(Arguing about these in general. Your specific image may be quite interesting, I can't say)

2:41 PM
@PrivatePansy I don't see how it's not interesting

@BlueBarren the question is "would the picture, in and of itself, be interesting with no title or contextual story attached to it?"

like most things on r/gifs have an average level of interest or higher
@ToxicFrog hmmm... no?

If the answer is "no", it probably doesn't belong in a forum for pictures that are themselves interesting, and should be in a forum for illustrated stories.

Q: Is there a way to configure mouse controls on Minecraft pc?

WorkingCupid549I have an Apple mouse that has one button but it senses whether your finger is on the left or right side when you click. The scroll wheel also is "touchscreen". Also the title of the post is Cheerleader Receives Massive Surprise so you can imagine the kind of comments the post got

2:45 PM
@ToxicFrog I mean, the big problem is that in the end, it's all HTML. And if your original representation is not HTML (or something close enough to it), then it's one more thing you have to learn.

Sure, HTML sucks, but I don't think it sucks bad enough that learning how to write it in a whole different language is worth the pain

@PrivatePansy HTML is pretty ok actually. I mean, it's probably the best language for marking up hyper text.

@fredley But what if I need mega text instead of hyper text?
I suppose I can replace all of the <h1> with <h2>

The more you have to justify why it might be okay to skirt acceptable lines the less it should be posted, in my opinion

It was argued before, I don't think it's ok but most of community doesn't seem to mind it so I don't argue too much

@Ash it's hard not to have to justify that when it comes to anime, considering revealing clothing is super common
one could argue that a chat about anime is nsfw in itself

@Ash What if I don't justify it at all?

The two women corroborated his lie, but changed their story when confronted with the video evidence.

3:55 PM
Like, is that an actual problem to solve in an actual game?
(I assume the formatting is actually readable in the question, and that it's just screwed up here)

I highly doubt it. The question doesn't make a lot of sense as a math question either - what is alpha and beta?
I mean, they're usually defined as the roots of a quadratic equation, I think? But then what's tan doing there?
Oh, blah, I need to read the title more closely
Yeah, it sort of makes sense as a math question - if you ignore the horrible symbol soup and tan incorrectly written as a variable instead of a function

Just looked at the question on my phone, and it definitely should have been closed as quickly as it was. It is a pure math problem that is (ignoring formatting even) poorly presented.
