I'm going to Chipotle for lunch today because I have a free burrito coupon
If they do not honor this I will be sad
Boo! adobe air is only supported on deb distros }:(
I want to go to Chipotle for lunch now despite not having a free burrito coupon.
It's raining, though, so I probably won't.
@twobugs you said on the stream that anyone was free to answer it
besides, who told you to post it on arqade in the first place? :p
@twobugs Isn't that what the clips are from?
@GnomeSlice The clips of Sonic kissing the princess? Yes. Without watching them, yes. Sonic 06 is... very strange
From what I've read, there is evidence the game was built and restarted from basically the ground up multiple times. It still had an extremely short dev cycle. Those devs were put through hell, basically
14:07
wtf
clipboard, y u do dis
@GnomeSlice (clip)board, clip=clippy, satan confirmed
I'm really sad I didn't see that message before you deleted it
@twobugs same as above gif
GnomeSlice accidental copy pastes are very high quality
Oh. I'm not sad anymore
It wasn't a jiggly tracer butt gif don't worry
14:09
@GnomeSlice wat
why are you making butt gifs?
I didn't make it
Everyone in my stream was calling me a butt man because I kept backstabbing people in Dark Souls 3
@twobugs Are you a butt man?
No, I appreciate the whole human body (as long as it is 2d)
Now look at what you've done, you've summoned Yuuki
14:11
Hmm... Chipotle?
I wonder what kind of urmom jokes robots would make
I wonder what robots would consider to be their mother, if anything. Their assembler? Their designer?
@twobugs more like buttstabbing, amirite?
they are your robotic siblings
Wow, my mom must be a pretty skilled mechanical engineer to be building robots
That's very impressive
Homework? Or Ornstein and Smough?
@Yuuki Speaking of, I wonder if he returns in DS3
I haven't seen either way yet but he was in 2 for no reason so probably
@twobugs YOUR MOTHERBOARD
2
@fredley But... that's part of the robot itself...?
14:17
what's the DEAL with these frivolous stars?
@GodEmperorDune Calm down, Jerry
It's kind of sad how much Jerry Seinfeld went downhill
Although the Bee Movie advertising campaign is pretty wonderful
@twobugs i'm sure he is comforted by the scrooge mc duck size mountain of cash he has
I know I would be

DJ McMayhemIn slither.io, there are these little moving balls that glow. If you eat them, you grow more than just eating a regular food pellet. One thing about them that's kinda weird, is that if you move toward them they will dodge you. For reference, here are some screenshots of them. The purple on her...

Warps are cool but I still think arbitrary code execution is the best
This is arbitrary code execution
It's just the arbitrary code is gamemode:credits
Interesting, I approve
@Unionhawk urmotherboard allows arbitrary code execution

Well, I didn't want that house anyway
One of my coworkers isn't in the office today. I have to wonder if that is a coincidence
14:35
He probably planned to be sick today
@GnomeSlice I'm still really liking Dead Star. I'm surprised at how long it's held my attention.
@StrixVaria I still haven't booted my ps4 up yet to download it
@WIPQOZN IS @TWOBUGS COWORKER: DATA CONFIRMED
I need to check out Dead Star
14:39
I've been playing without worrying much/at all about winning/losing the whole game, just focusing on trying to play well moment to moment, and that's made it a lot better.
You're very rarely personally in control of whether your team is ahead or not.
@StrixVaria That's pretty much how I play Battlefront, because the teams are so big
@StrixVaria That's what I have to do for basically any team based thing
I just hate when games have a ranking system and the #1 factor is win or loss
@twobugs It's easier to do for this than for, say, a MOBA, at least for me.
14:41
For a 1v1 game? Sure, whatever. For a team game? No. No no no no no no
@twobugs There isn't really a better alternative, though.
Titanfall has player performance rating and you can turn it on/off for each match. I'd say that is pretty much the best way to do it
You get rewarded for accomplishing objectives in-game
So it basically rewards you for participating
@twobugs I don't know anything about Titanfall, but in a lot of games even if you do really well personally, but aren't playing as a team player, you can doom your team to a loss.
True, but the way you earn the rating points is different between game types
Destiny's award system is wacky, it rewards top playerss and bottom players
so you do average and get less
14:42
On the respawn ticket one, you get more rating points for removing enemy tickets
On the capture one you get rating points for attacking and defending points
Etc.
In Battlefront, your score is directly related to your XP gain
score/10
sort of good and sort of bad
Yeah, it's similar for Titanfall
I guess the idea is that, even if you do all of the objectives for your team alone, but your team loses, you still lost the game and shouldn't be rewarded for that.
Splatoon does score = rewards too and despite that game having snappy matchmaking and short matches people still AFK
Despite AFKing giving you 0 rewards
@StrixVaria Right, I get that, but I think it's a really awful system in matchmade games
I've never played a matchmade game enough to where it felt like matchmaking was actually placing me against even matches
@twobugs I think that it's really frustrating to lose because you way outskill your teammates, but I don't think that rewarding you for doing well on a losing team is a good solution because it compromises on the main point of a competitive game, which is winning.
So I agree that it sucks, and that the games/systems you've mentioned might be less frustrating, but I don't think that they are ranking you on what actually matters in that case then.
14:46
It's rewarding you for doing the objective. If everyone on your team does the objective better than the other team, you win
The key point is "better than the other team" there.
I think this is a case where the greedy option of just rewarding players on a per-player basis is the best one.
I think that it's a tradeoff between making players feel like they're progressing vs. having an actual true competitive system.
Right, but you need to actually incentivize the objectives themselves. In every game I've played where it's just W/L people heavily ignore objectives.
And for W/L stuff you just grab friends and stomp random matchmade groups. That's absolutely no fun
Well, no fun for the people getting stomped
@twobugs In theory, then, players who focus on objectives should win more games than they lose, because they weight the scales in their own favor by being on the team they're on.
14:48
But not in practice. If you're the only person doing objectives on your team, you're going to have a bad time
It's still a frustrating road, for sure, but I understand why it is set up the way it is.
I don't. I still do not see a single advantage to the W/L system in a game that relies on random matchmaking.
@twobugs If the opponents contest you, but assuming the opponents are the same skill levels as your teammates, they won't contest you more often than they do.
But assuming everyone is the same "skill level" is a big jump.
If you're basing the "skill level" solely on W/L...
It's basically just circular logic at that point
@twobugs Because the point of a competitive game is to win. No matter what you do in game, if you lose, you have failed at your main goal in the game, and should not be rewarded.
14:50
Yes, but how do you encourage players to win? How do you encourage them to do the objectives?
You give them incentives
@twobugs By making losses count against you...
By making the objectives lead to winning...
If you don't do that, the evidence shows that players largely ignore objectives and it creates a negative experience for everyone
Good players will do objectives.
@twobugs At entry level/low level sure.
But in a competitive game good players will rise past that and play with people who know what they're doing, assuming that there is even reasonably competent matchmaking.
At many levels of skill. To actually carry a match takes a huge skill advantage
How will the good player rise?
Their progression is fundamentally NOT under their control
I have to do a work thing for a few minutes, but then I will try to explain what's in my head.
14:52
People only care about that important kd ratio most of the time because fuck objective play
@Unionhawk Yes, literally this
I should have articulated that I think tracking K/D is cancer
Let's make a few assumptions for the specific scenario we're talking about.
1) The team with the higher average skill among its players will win more often than it loses.
Which is probably fair.
The assumptions are randos are bad
That's my assumption
2) In this scenario, the current player is of a higher skill than the matchmaking thinks he is.
So in a normal game, he's bringing the average skill of his team up.
Which increases his team's chances of winning the game.
1) I don't really agree with this. Destiny tries to do this with matchmaking and here's what it leads to
14:54
Look at how most people hate playing support
Over a long period of time and many games, this results in the player winning more than he loses and getting paired against better people.
Lets say @Unionhawk has a Skill rating of 110
Support is objectively beneficial to victory, but few people like it
If matchmaking just tries to reach an even skill score
@twobugs I'm interested in hearing the counter to this, because I can't fathom it yet.
14:55
It could place @Unionhawk on a team with 9 people who have rating 10
And match them against a team of average score 20
So for @Unionhawk, he is able to do quite well. His teammates are not. This creates a frustrating experience for everyone.
Because what you're arguing for is that, on average, the team with the lower skill will beat the team wiht the higher skill.
This sounds like an awful matchmaking system by the way
No, I'm saying average skill is a simple discrete value
Ornstein and Smough dead, Anastasia avenged.
Look at what I said again:
3 mins ago, by StrixVaria
1) The team with the higher average skill among its players will win more often than it loses.
14:57
@Unionhawk It's the Destiny system, and it's cancer
I said that it will win more often than it loses.
They improved it recently though
Not that it will win every game.
@twobugs Jesus fuck
14:57
There will be cases where the lower skill team wins due to whatever factors.
But a higher skill team will win more often than it loses, or else the game isn't a skill game.
What in the hell
Let me try and lay out my argument
In which case talking about competitive aspects is irrelevant.
1) Any "skill" rating is just an approximation of a player's actual ability
@Yuuki Congrats!
14:58
2) Any rating system is going to require a significant amount of time to reach an accurate value for everyone
3) What you're describing may work over the extreme long term, but that requires everyone in the community has a good mentality
I'm currently thinking about starting over and hanging around SL20 for some Jolly Cooperation around the Undead Parish. I'm too high level to help put anywhere on my main file.
@twobugs It works over the long term regardless of mentality, because players with a good mentality will rise and players with a bad mentality won't.
It doesn't, because a lot of players will get frustrated if their initial experiences are poor
Destiny's matchmaking may just be fucked, and other games work significantly better.
Every single game I've played has had a fucked matchmaking system
15:00
@twobugs Working on improving initial experience is a big issue, I'll agree with that.
But I don't see rewarding individual play within a game that you lose as a good way to increase competitive viability.
Just trying to start out, at rank 0, is complete cancer
It may help you retain players, but it does so at the cost of competitive viability.
Maybe not competitive viability, but to actually be a competitive game is really tricky
I would not consider a lot of the super popular games exactly "competitive"
So from a player experience perspective, I actually 100% agree with you.
Losing a game that you did amazingly well in is frustrating and makes you not want to even play anymore, and having personal progression to counteract that will keep you playing and having more fun.

Q: Love Live without the music

HarryI'm playing love live game mostly for the management and the story. Is there a way to turn off the horrendous music mini-game that's forced on you all the time? Is there a version without it?

15:02
I'm more talking about players who are already really into their games and want to play a strictly competitive version.
Okay, I get what you're saying then
I think that makes more sense and I agree with you
That's why I think it's super important to have a ranked mode completely separate from normal multiplayer and 100% optional.
If I'm going to soloqueue with randoms then I fucking loathe this kind of competitive skill system
But if I'm going to try and play in an organized team it just makes sense
It's cool that we basically agree, we were just describing different aspects of the design
15:03
We were having different arguments at the same time and it took like 20 minutes to figure out what each other were talking about :P
I think you make good points for the long-tail viability of a game
I just get frustrated when I go into like Splatoon or whatever and can't get past the first few ranks because my teammates are not even playing
:|
I'm pretty glad I didn't get Splatoon.
I think I'd have played it for a few hours and then stopped forever.
Or Blops3 where maybe the overall team scores are roughly even but that's because each team has a few people dominating and a few people 0-20
@StrixVaria It's a really fun game but like just about every single multiplayer I want to kill the community
@twobugs I used to play MW2 on 360 and if I got 2 kills in a match it was a huge success.
15:06
It's just super shitty to try and get past the initial hump in matchmaking
As much as I love the idea of competitive online multiplayer, I really can't stand actually participating either.
I get too stressed out too quickly.
For Splatoon too ranked mode is basically if you win you get a huge reward. If you lose, nothing
It's balanced by matches being very quick and full of action
So even with losses you're probably progressing faster than casual
@twobugs Overwatch matchmaking is going to be like this up to a point, and then once you're over the initial hump then losses are penalized.
But good lord do I get pissed when nobody on my team is even trying
Which may weed out non-serious players...
15:07
I mean if I'm like level 10 or whatever and someone on my team is level 30ish
I don't think Splatoon has prestige?
The level 30ish guy had to have been playing waaaay longer
I mean I am just really good at games but these people are bad
And humble.
I'm terrible at games.
@twobugs #LearnToParry
I feel like I used to be good, but that is no longer the case.
I got to floor 3 in Gungeon once.
I did not make it to the boss of floor 3.
I'm still bitter about dying to an invincible iron maiden yesterday.
I'm terrible too but like... how the fuck am I so much better than these other people?
How BAD are they?
15:10
@StrixVaria I feel this way anymore, too. I used to be damn good at competitive shooters. Now I just feel like I'm awful at everything.
Like if I just start playing a game for the first time I don't think I should always be one of the highest scorers on my team
see that's where i disagree
i was good in Q3 and good in UT
i got better but I was good
naually am
natually*
True, I can understand that
Why do I get a feeling that one of the drawing routines has an off by one error?
But I feel like nowadays there are so many weapons and so many attachments and caveats to how everything works that it can be harder to be effective just starting out
15:12
@twobugs I've played TF2 for probably 1000 hours and I have no idea what's going on when I play now.
Like starting in Blops3 I have no clue what guns are good out of the 20+ guns, I probably can't even unlock some of the better ones, no clue what attachments are good, etc.
It's balanced by the fact that Blops3 time to kill is basically 0, so essentially anyone can kill anyone if they get the drop
I just grab my stock-loadout Demoman and play like it's the old times.
@StrixVaria When in doubt stock is usually better
Stickies on the point, grenades into crowds of people, hang out near the engineer and his dispenser.
@twobugs assuming the game is more skill based than knowledge based (knowing weapons and weaknesses and situational awareness etc), I generally tend to be pretty good starting out, but I don't get much better as I progress
15:14
I just get really mad when I think about certain ranking systems :P
@StrixVaria There are only a few unlocks that I can think of that are good, and a few more that are usually pretty all right
@Chippies I typically run into this too. I have trouble improving past a certain point
Where the good unlocks are pretty much kritz, ubersaw, crossbow
@twobugs that's probably one of the reasons why I switch games so much
I feel good about myself when I start a new game, because I feel adequate in relation to how I have played. If I play for a long time and I see other people getting much better than I do, it's demotivating
@Unionhawk I will never use the sniper rifle again on a sniper. Bow all the way.
15:16
Yeah, huntsman is pretty good
I played actively through the spy/sniper update, which is probably so old now that you don't even know what update I'm talking about.
Well I'm also terrible at sniping.
The huntsman lets me actually ever play sniper at all.
do we think i can shorten the legs on my desk
while my montiors, ARE STILL ON IT?
@djsmiley2k depends on how you intend to shorten them
15:17
@Chippies haha
they ikea ones
@Chippies I also switch games because I rage quit when my teammates are worthless :P
sawing bits off is probably doable, but I'd suggest having someone watch the monitors
you twist them, they can go back in themselves...
@Unionhawk I find uses for all of the different medi-guns actually.
Like Splatoon. Fun game, fuck soloqueuing
15:17
problem is I need to drop like 20cm D:
The spy/sniper update also made the spy usable for me. I can hide in a corner invisible forever and just uncloak when I have a guaranteed stab.
might as well clear everything down again sigh
@Yuuki Ehhh, medigun and kritz all the way
Quick Fix has utility, sure
Those are the most generally useful, but Quick-Fix and Vaccinator are really great on Stop That Tank.
In fact, if you're on Robots, Quick-Fix is better than any other medi-gun. And if you're on Humans, Vaccinator is almost better as well.
Okay if my hunch is right about why this isn't working
Phew, it's wrong
15:20
I've also had a lot of success with the Iron Bomber.

Q: research paper about how games keep there players

homewardmenderI'm doing a paper about how video games and I am wondering how most companies keep there players. Yes i know that they give out new things but most of the time people don't care about that and I don't have a good answer for this question.

@Lazers2.0 Hm, not sure if this works as a question here. Neat topic, though
> doing a paper
> there players
Good luck.
It's also really broad.
@twobugs I should really play more Splatoon.
15:23
Ah, so the supplied sound for the audio notification demonstration just doesn't work
I apologize if I got too... passionate about game ranking systems @StrixVaria
Clickbait link is clickbait
Starbait link is clickbait
I try not to be a jerk on the internet but it's tough because I am a jerk in real life :(
15:31
@GnomeSlice As cool as this is, they're making an Indiana Jones 5 so this will probably happen in it
With how much crap @Yuuki was giving me to parry and not block with my shield I wonder if he is one of those "Blocking is cheating" in MonHun people
I hope not or I will walk to Texas and give him a real whoopin
Rolling is cheating. #ShieldMasterRace
Take hits like a man.
@twobugs Don't you have a car now?
15:38
Yes, but I would walk there just to show how serious I am
That seems highly inefficient
Just like Minecraft OH WHAAAAAAT
cc @Wipqozn
Now that @Unionhawk knows he can annoy me with Praise The Sun at least I have a counter measure
@twobugs I'm a blocking and rolling kind of guy, myself. I never could get the timing down for parrying.
Well, now I definitely don't want to go with you to beat up @Yuuki
@twobugs praise the sun
15:41
(since you'd probably end up passing me on the way to texas)
Or you could, anyway
I just like the fantasy of being a heavy armor guy
And they usually have cool armor designs in the Souls games
Versus the no pants guy?
No pants guy has many pros, don't get me wrong
Actually, I've been training a lot so I could probably jog to Texas. This will vastly improve efficiency
@Fluttershy I'm just saying that's a really useful skill for Dark Souls. I've only recently gotten the timings somewhat reliably and the Knight enemies are cake when you know how to parry.
I oneshot Silver Knights with the riposte on my Claymore.
Parrying is definitely a great skill for me to develop so I'm glad @Yuuki is pushing me to do it more
I also need to make better use of guard breaks and charge attacks (but those are easier to incorporate)
Landing a charge attack is very satisfying
15:44
@twobugs i repcapped on that DS3 question :D
Not quite Level 3 GS charge satisfying, but what is?
@twobugs But think about how much you could be destroying the environment driving to texas!
@GodEmperorDune Aw, I'm only at 135 :( Someone downvoted my controller question, too
Which is very rude
@twobugs hmm, i better go hype it
Googling it takes you to some crappy Dark Souls 1 answers telling me to unplug my mouse. Or it did, before I asked
15:46
its a great question, you'll probably get a gold badge for it being famous
I definitely will, it's on the way already
Might even happen today

I should get DS3 just so I can answer questions
I need 256 more rep
Oh, hey, that's a good number!
There are surprisingly few DS3 questions
15:48
I should change my tuesday thursday final alarm to 10:24
a self-answered "where is the handmaiden so can I buy loot" might pay dividends, or is that just a uniquely @twobugs experience?
@Wipqozn couldn't find her either
I didn't know about her either
@twobugs gogo make some rep
To be fair she is in a part I didn't initial explore and she is dressed in dark robes in a dark area
15:50
I wandered around the whole Firelink Shrrine and I just didn't notice another person
@murgatroid99 @twobugs ranted about how wrong i was for a good ten minutes until he found her
@GodEmperorDune You told me to talk to the level up chick!
Well I posted the question
@twobugs i said "handmaiden"
If I get downvoted it's coming out of your pay @GodEmperorDune
See I thought you were just dumb and thought the level up chick was the hand maiden because he name is also maiden
don't blame me for namco haivng terrible naming practices
@twobugs did you? i don't see it on main site?
15:54
To express my displease with @GodEmperorDune I am going to get a !!!!FREE BURRITO!!!! at Chipotle
ah, caching
@twobugs didn't even post a map? jeez
Wait hwaaa
DID SOMEONE SAY FREE BURRITO
I'll post more info at home
Yes it's because I have a coupon
Oh
Dangit
@twobugs a wizard coupon?
15:56
1
Q: Is there a vendor in Firelink Shrine?

two bugsIn previous Souls games, there is usually at least 1 vendor in the hub area. Is there one in Dark Souls 3?

@twobugs But is it a ☼Free Burrito☼?
@Lazers2.0 this question is going to be hard to hype, your wording is inadequate
Yay, getting close to rep capping
Fine, improve the wording if you want and I just might make you a twitch mod
9 kills, 2 deaths as Spy. I think I'm getting better.
