Geez, Bethesda is better at telling stories through level design than anyone else in the business. It's a shame they're so objectively terrible at telling stories any other way though.

@GraceNote If you mean in game books, I find those only do a particularly good job when they form part of the narrative in a location - most of the actual text is often not particularly good, and Elder Scrolls lore is... convoluted and kind of dumb in many places.

There was a really good article I read yesterday on this topic, which I agree with.

It's actually most noticable in Fallout 3, with the various computer terminals, or things like the dead stuntman in the metro tunnels

but they do it a lot in Skyrim too.

(Incidentally, this is why Oblivion felt so weak. Too many random caves that didn't really feel like they told a story in quite the same way that they do in Morrowind or Skyrim)

Lego Minecraft sets!

A good example: I just cleared out a random cave in Skyrim - I walked in to find a group of Bandits being attacked by Falmer - as I move through the cave, I find that these bandits had built their hideout right above a little Dwemer ruin full of Falmer - and the Falmer had broken through, and started to kill the bandits. As I got further down, I found bandit corpses in cages with spiders, and more bandits on altars with swords sticking out of their chests, having been ritually sacraficed.

And when I got back to the bandit den on my way out, their chief walked in, asking where the hell everybody was before seeing me and attacking.
