The marked characteristics of a fairy tale are - they're short - most fairy tales you remember have source text that are under or around 1000 words long, which is remarkable considering how verbose the literature of that era is

They usually have a moral, expressed fairly overtly, through the protagonist's actions and subsequent fate

They're very parsimonious in terms of their description and setting. They favor a very simple and direct form of storytelling

Fairy tales omit a lot of details that stories normally contain. It's how they can be told to small children, and also why they get embedded into our mind so much. Well, that and the fact that they get repeated a lot, and that the tropes that appear in them are reused extremely frequently in all forms of media
